Wow, all of these posts really make me rethink my humble collection. I always
thought I was going a little overboard, but apparently mine is quite average.
One thing that really surprises me is how many desktops everyone has. I only
have two, my Intel iMac and an old Performa (while there are several desktops
that I want, like the iMac DV and G4 Cube shipping costs and storage are
prohibitive). My collection focuses almost entirely on portable devices:

Computers:
Apple IIc
PowerBook 145b
PowerBook Duo 230
Performa 630CD
PowerBook 5300cs
PowerBook 5300ce
Powerbook 1400cs/133
PowerBook 3400c/200
PowerBook G3 233mhz (Wallstreet Series II)
iBook G4 12 1ghz
PowerBook G4 17 1.33ghz
iMac 20 (Intel)

Devices:
ImageWriter II
Newton MessagePad 120
QuickTake 150
Newton MessagePad 2100
iPod 15gb (third generation)
iPod Shuffle (first generation, lost)
iPod Classic 80gb
iPhone
iPhone 3GS

Miscellaneous:
Mac OS 9.0 in retail box
AppleWorks 6 in retail box
Macworld collection (1997-2000)
Mac Addict CD collection (almost every disc)

Re: considering a used iMac

2010-09-22 Thread Steven
That's true. I just got my newest vintage Mac, a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet, a few
days ago, and despite it being 12 years old the battery still lasts about three
hours. Now, I know that certainly isn't the norm, but considering that the rest
of my family's laptop batteries (HP, Toshiba, and Sony) don't last more than a
few minutes (and haven't since they were less than a year old, even though they
were used very lightly), it really says something about the quality that goes
into Apple's computers. All of my vintage laptop batteries work for at least
half an hour or more, the newest from 2003 (a 17 PowerBook battery that lasts
more than 2 hours) and the oldest from 1992 (a PowerBook Duo battery that
probably lasts 45 minutes, tops). If Apple can make batteries that last almost
twenty years, why can't PC makers make any that last more than six months?

Of course, one possible answer could be that most of those vintage PowerBooks
were once top of the line expensive computers while my family usually buys
budget PC laptops, but I'm pretty sure my sister's VAIO cost more than my iBook
G4, and the only thing the battery on that computer is capable of is keeping it
in sleep mode for a short time while mine still lasted about 2 hours or so
until the iBook's logic board failed (and the VAIO is at least three years
newer than the iBook).

Sorry for the rant...

Steven

Ashgrove salum...@gmail.com wrote:

There is a caveat, though: G5 iMacs and the first couple generations

only read about it, but seen them firsthand.

I too have an iMac G5. I bought mine, a 20-inch iSight, 2.1 GHz model
(MA064LL/A), at the end of January 2006 after the first Intel iMac
was revealed and the price of the iMac G5 began to drop. I really
like it and hope it lasts forever!

According to MacTracker, the iMac G5 was brought out in three major
revisions from August 2004 through October 2005, and was finally
discontinued in March 2006. The first version of the iMac G5 (1.8
GHz) and probably also the second revision (2.0 Ghz) were built with
defective electrolytic capacitors that caused logic-board failures
within a a few years. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague for more information
on these bad capacitors. (Neither of these models came with a
built-in iSight camera.)

I was under the impression that the third revision (2.1 GHz iSight)
was not built with these bad capacitors, and thus far my computer has
shown no external evidence of logic-board problems. However, the
message by John Hobbs included in
http://groups.google.com/group/imaclist/browse_thread/thread/ffdfb88089231079%3EiMac%20G5%20Problems
points out that even these 2.1 GHz iSight models have shown failures
due to faulty capacitors. In Mr. Hobbs' case, the problem appears to
have been due to a sloppy job of manual replacement of capacitors at
the factory before his iMac G5 was shipped out. So far I have had no
reason to open my computer to look for bulging or popped capacitors;
I hope I continue to have better luck than Mr. Hobbs did.

Each of these three major versions of the iMac G5 seems to have been
subject to minor revisions between the major ones. For example, the
iLife package bundled with my machine was iLife '05, whereas some
people who bought nominally the same model of iMac G5 received iLife
'06 with their computer. But I don't know if my hardware is any
different from what was in the machines that came with iLife '06.

In this, as in everything, YMMV. I know people with G3 icebooks who

Re: considering a used iMac

2010-09-21 Thread Steven
I got a 20 inch white Intel iMac as my high school graduation gift in 2007, and
it is a great computer. It runs Final Cut Express, Photoshop, and Flash
extremely well, even with the low 1gb of ram that it currently has. If you can
afford one, it is a great computer, and although I don't use any of the current
heavy multimedia programs (Final Cut Pro, CS5, etc), it does run CS3 and other
recent programs perfectly, so I imagine it can handle the most up to date
versions. The Intel iMacs are great, powerful computers (but look for a Core 2
Duo, since I have heard they are better than the Core Duo in the very first
model), and Columbia College Chicago, where I go to college, still uses many of
these white Intel iMacs as audio/video workhorses in their Film and Video
department (one of the nation's best). Since they are three years old and many
people prefer the newer aluminum styling (personally I prefer the white
plastic), you should be able to find a pretty good deal somewhere.

I also use the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid HDTV tuner, which plays and records local
HDTV along with analog composite/S video and cable (I believe the most recent
version does HD cable too), and I have used it to copy some of my LaserDiscs to
iTunes format. The analog video input doesn't look as good as it does on an
analog TV, but it is still better than VHS quality, so that shouldn't be a
problem for you. I have also heard good things about the TubeStick, but I
haven't used that one.

Hope that helps,
Steven

Check Screen Spanning Doctor. Your G5's video card is more than
capable of handling it, but for some obscure reason it's crippled by
software. Screen Spanning Doctor will free it, in the same way it
freed my 1.25Ghz eMac --which has a vastly inferior graphics card than

It depends on your video card if it can support it or not. My Power Mac G4
sawtooth's original video card, an ATI Rage 128 Pro had both a DVI and VGA
connector, yet it didn't allot extended desktop. I had to put in an ATI
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB before such a thing could be possible. I understand
you said that Extended desktop usually works with all Power Mac G3-G5
desktop towers, but it all depends on the video card.

My Gigabit came originally with an ATI Rage 128 Pro, which I quickly
upgraded to an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro with 64Mb of VRAM. I have a dim
recollection of using extended desktop with the Rage, but I'm very
likely wrong. I can attest that the Radeon 9000 Pro does have extended
desktop support out of the box, though. So I would say that most of
AGP video cards support it.

Just checked several sources freely available to anyone, and they all say
video mirroring only or words to that effect. That means you get the same
image on the external monitor as on the built-in monitor. Duplicate in other,
other words. Same thing on all three screen sizes of G4 iMacs.

Screen Spanning Doctor will allow the use of a second display for extended
desktop instead of just mirroring. It doesn't modify the adapter and it won't
hurt the display. It simply disables the block in Open Firmware that Apple put
in, probably to restrict low end machines. I used it with my iBook. iBooks
could only do mirroring while the same era Powerbooks did either mirroring or
extended desktop. That is because Powerbooks were the high end machine and
Apple wanted you to pay for those features. The software's documentation will
tell you if it runs on a particular machine.

One nice thing is that you just run the software once, it doesn't install any
software, it just modifies a setting in OF.

Nah, you can never have too many Macs... well if you have more than 2

• Mac Quadra 610 25MHz MacOS 8.6 (my first Mac, secondhand 1996... all
my Macs are secondhand btw)

• Power Mac 7200 90MHz MacOS 8.6
• Power Mac 7600 120MHz (I think) MacOS 8.6
• Power Mac 8600 300MHz MacOS 8.6 (on my LAN, still in use... I'm a
designer and my Wacom tablet, scanner and printer are SCSI)

• G3 iMac 350MHz Panther (Bondi or Blueberry, not sure)
• G3 Blue White Panther/Classic 400MHz
• G3 iBook 300MHz Panther/Classic (Bondi or Blueberry)
• G4 Titanium Powerbook 1.6GHz Leopard (on my LAN)
• G4 QuickSilver 800 MHz Tiger (on my LAN)
• G5 Dual 2GHz Leopard (on my LAN)

I'm no where near the aficionados that you guys here are... I don't
tinker with old machines at all. They were all (excepting the iBook)
purchased as upgrades to my production as a designer, and all great in
their day.

Re: considering a used iMac

Yes it is a 20. I am used to large monitors, and i need an extended
desktop. Is there a program that i can use to make an extended desktop with
my 20 dell external monitor without harming the system?

I have a 20 imac G5 that i use for photoshop, youtube, and some online
gaming on a daily basis. If you're looking for power for the buck, get what
i got. (Although really i paid nothing for mine since i traded my G4 iBook
for it.)

Compatibility with your Adobe apps is of course very important, not
knowing what versions you are using it's hard to evaluate all
possibilities. If you are currently using them on your MDD maybe a G5
Power Mac would fit the bill? Though they are not the latest greatest
they are capable machines, customizable, easy to work on, and reasonably
priced. I use a 2.0 GHz G5 DP and my only complaint is Flash performance
on hulu.com is still awful; the DC models are a little faster still than
my DP.

I would recommend staying away from the liquid cooled 2.7 GHz DP and 2.5
GHz DC DP (quad). If a leak develops and destroys delicate electronics
it's not going to be covered by warranty.

Any Intel iMac would be a distinct improvement over the MDD, but I'd recommend
getting at least a 2nd Gen (using the Core 2 Duo) over the first Gen which use
the Core Duo CPU...there's quite a difference in performance between the two.
