Re: [efloraofindia:112420] Re: Xerochrysum bracteatum from Delhi: Testing my new Canon 550d

2012-04-01 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Thanks for this useful information. My son has always been telling this to
me. I usually would use closeup/macro function on the dial which they say
should be used for flowers, but unfortunately it brings down aperture to
lowest mostly 5.6 or even 4 when I use Minolta 28-55 lens with my Sony.
This loses field depth.

This controversy has already been resolved in another thread. This is
Ipomoea sindica Stapf,, distinct from both Ipomoea eriocarpa and
Convolvulus scindicus. The confusion arose because of treatment (wrong) in
Flora of Pakistan.

Re: [efloraofindia:112404] Convolvulacea Week : Ipomoea sindica from Panipat (indiantreepix@googlegroups.com)

2012-04-01 Thread jmgarg1
Forwarding again for Id confirmation or otherwise please.

Some earlier relevant feedback:

“There has been a confusion in the name Ipomoea sindica Stapf. described in
1894 from Sind and Baluchistan in Pakistan. This is a small shrub with
thick small leaves, obovate in shape, tomentose, sessile and barely 5-10 mm
long. This is in fact now known as Convolvulus scindicus Stocks, 1852.

The above plant of Balkar ji is *Ipomoea eriocarpa* R. Br., a much
different plant, a climbing herb with distinctly petiolate leaves, cordate
at base and 2.5-9 cm long. It was wrongly identified by Jafri (editor of
Pakistan Flora) as Ipomoea sindica.

The confusion has been discussed in the following paper:
http://convolvulaceae.myspecies.info/content/ipomoea-sindica-stapf-convolvulus-scindicus-stocks-and-ipomoea-eriocarpa-rbr-convolvulceae-c”
from Singh ji.

“Perhaps I should also mention that there is another Convolvulus scindicus
Boiss., now treated as synonym of Convolvulus prostratus Fossk. (syn: C.
microphyllus Sieb. & Spreng; C. pluricaulis Choisy)” from Singh ji.

[efloraofindia:112397] Cucurbitaceae Week: Identifying main species of Cucurbita

2012-04-01 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Dear friends
There are hundreds of cultivars of Cucurbita and species are often
difficult to identify. More difficult is the fact that any species can go
under the name pumpkin, squash or gourd. Flowers and leaves are not often
great help. I am uploading few to show the differences. The species can be
identified by the structure of the tip of pedicel where it is attached to
the base on fruit.

1. Cucurbita maximait is soft and not expanded at tip
2. Cucurbita moschata..it is expanded angular pad, with a small
constriction between pad and fruit.
3. Cucurbita pepo: it is expanded with extended fingers firmly attached to
fruit.

It's great to know that you will be exploring Gori Valley with your new
DSLR (s).

I have never used a DSLR yet. But humbly suggesting two aspect for your

1) How about investing some extra bucks on a spare battery?
2) Desiccant silica gel is very useful if the place is humid, it will keep
the lenses crisp.

Happy exploring

Wonderful clear pictures Ramanji! I had tried to take some pictures of
silver oak flowers today but struggled to get a decent picture. What camera
did you use? What kind of zoom?

Below are the best pictures I could manage- even after some post
processing. Shot these in Frazer Town. Used a Fuji FinepixHS10 which has
30x zoom (it is not a D-SLR). I think I am not able to focus correctly on
the flowers which are somewhat low contrast compared to the surroundings.

Re: [efloraofindia:112336] need id

2012-04-01 Thread shetur
Yes, I too believe now it is Baliospermum solanifolium.
The story fits too. I had bought it from Jijamata Udyan nursery. When I
went back and told them it is not barleria. They told me that somebody had
sold them by the name of Vajradanti. I think the seller must have told them
it is Danti (Marathi name for Baliospermum solanifolium) and they confused
it with Vajradanti!

thank you Gargji For forwarding the post and Tapas ji for id. Yes I surely
apologize for bad quality images, I am not able to manage better than this
with my phone camera at the moment.

2012-04-01 Thread Dinesh Valke
Aruna ji, could not find any genus with such name "Gentelbua". Any error in
spelling ?
To me the posted plant looks like some species of *Strobilanthes* OR *
Hemigraphis* - just a guess.

Regards.
Dinesh

Some earlier relevant feedback:
“This would be *Merremia umbellata*. Sizes of leaves and corolla would help
