As Srikanth ji mentioned, we cant grow this species in soil as this is a hemi-parasite. The seed dispersal is by birds, mainly Flowerpeckers. The seeds in the bird fecal matter get attached to the branches with the help of non digestive gummy mucilage around the seed. Thus it get attached to the branch and germinate in the bark. I doubt whether it even germinate in soil. So far, I haven't seen any hemi-parasite growing or germinating in soil. I have seen then growing on a wide range of host trees including Jack fruit tree. . [efloraofindia:76960] Re: Does this variety fruit?
My understanding from the question is whether the plant/species produces fruit? If this is the question my answer is that it differs from place to place. Studies on the pollination biology of this plant (not sure about the species) is going on in Karnataka. It is found that in some places there is no fruit set at all. No clue, so far, why it is so. If it is (this species/variety) a recent introduction to any new place it takes sometime to start producing fruits as these plants need specific pollinators to effect pollination. Dear Srikant ji, Thank you very much for the information and encouraging comment. I will recheck the same when I get live specimen. Unfortunately we were not allowed to collect specimens during the field visit. I had gone with IISc team who had permission only to collect amphibians and reptiles, hence I don't have specimen with me. From my field notebook I recollect that the flowers were around 1cm (max 1.5cm no precise measurement is available) - long. When I rerun the key, I could learnt that H. obtusatus branchlets inflorescence and/or sometimes leaves more or less furfuraceous (Made of or covered with scaly particles, such as dandruff) and leaf base is rounded/acute/auricled whereas, in my specimen leaves, branchlets and inflorescence were glabrous as mentioned in the key provided by Gamble (described as L wallichiana) and the leaf base was narrowed at the base. I had experimented and experienced a variation in flower length of flowers of Dendrophthoe falcata and D nilgirica from populations from KMTR (Tirunelveli) and the Nilgiries (Priya Davidars JBNHS paper). Nice pictures! The flower opens by 20.00h and abscise by early morning hours. Hence we wouldn't see flowers on the tree in the day time. If I am right the leaves of this species is very narrow and grows on thin layer of soil on rocks along with Utricularia spp Drocera spp and all. This plant is active with flowers only during rainy season and getting such nice pictures in the rain is great effort! New name of this plant is Rhamphicarpa fistulosa (Hochst.) It is learned from The Plant list site that Costus speciosus is a synonym of Cheilocostus speciosus (J.König) C.Specht (http:// www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-343835) of Costaceae family. This is not Lindernia ciliata, for sure as Manudev pointed out, L. ciliata has sessile leaves and corolla is white with pink throat. I think it is the same species that I had posted few days back http://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/browse_thread/thread/9c92e4f1281d83a1/dda4c0b95e27066a?lnk=gstq=Lindernia#dda4c0b95e27066a The leaves of L antipoda is elliptic obovate and is about 2.5cm. Here, if my assumption is correct, the leaves are more than 3cm long. Further, the key in The flora of the Tamil Nadu Carnatic (page 1083) says that calyx margin serrulate in L antipoda Calyx margin entire for Lindernia ruellioides I think this is Lindernia ruellioides even the one that posted on August 2.
