As Srikanth ji mentioned, we cant grow this species in soil as this is
a hemi-parasite.
The seed dispersal is by birds, mainly Flowerpeckers. The seeds in the
bird fecal matter get attached to the branches with the help of non
digestive gummy mucilage around the seed. Thus it get attached to the
branch and germinate in the bark.
I doubt whether it even germinate in soil.
So far, I haven't seen any hemi-parasite growing or germinating in
soil.
I have seen then growing on a wide range of host trees including Jack
fruit tree. .

In G. tiliaefolia the peduncles should be shorter than petioles (here
it doesn't look so).
Most probably G. asiatica of Malvaceae family (according to the plant
list).

I too stand for Barringtonia asiatica of Lecythidaceae family, as

It cant be Calliandra surinamensis as the picture shows a single
flower and it has petals. Flower buds are also different. In
Calliandra what we see is an inflorescence with several flowers. But
it is a nice mimicry! Mimicry in plants?

2011-08-20 Thread Smilax004
It is a species of Erythrina of Leguminosae family.

Erythrina variegata generally don't have leaves when flowering. They
usually flower when all the leaves shed. This species seems to be a
species of Erythrina that flowers in the monsoon (picture date 2nd
August 2011) whereas E. varigata flowers in the summer.

Please describe me about the nature of thorns on the plant; whether
they are all over the tree including trunk, branches and branch-lets
or otherwise.

Giby

The wing petals and the shape of the leaves may not suggest that this
as V.vexillata.

In Vigna generally the wing petals are shorter than the standard
petals and the keel petals beaked (which is not visible in the

I think this is indeed a Rubiaceae species, though I am not sure about

My thoughts are based on opposite leaves, interpetiolar stipules and
inferior ovary with persistent calyx.

More than 23 species of Ficus has been recorded from the Western

dispersed by birds and germinate on the branches of trees.

Unless you get the close up of at least the leaves with petiole where
you can clearly see the venation, characteristics of fig is also
important to confirm the species. Sometimes you need the fig in hand
and dissect to see characters hidden inside the fig.

A very useful natural shampoo as well. All parts of this plant can be
used as shampoo.
It helps the hair from premature and uncontrolled fall and it enhances
the hair growth. It helps for sound sleep as well.

What to do is that make a paste out of the plant parts (preferably
leaf, flower and bark). Apply it 30 before bath. Timing is according
to the health of the person. For instance, if a person is suffering
from cough and vata related ailments, he/she is not suppose to apply
it for long time.

The new name of this plant according to the plant list (http://

My guess for the given pictures stands for species of Chionanthus of

If you can provide information on flowers it would be easy to reach
species.

[efloraofindia:76960] Re: Does this variety fruit?

2011-08-13 Thread Smilax004
My understanding from the question is whether the plant/species
produces fruit?
If this is the question my answer is that it differs from place to
place.
Studies on the pollination biology of this plant (not sure about the
species) is going on in Karnataka.
It is found that in some places there is no fruit set at all. No clue,
so far, why it is so.
If it is (this species/variety) a recent introduction to any new place
it takes sometime to start producing fruits as these plants need
specific pollinators to effect pollination.

2011-08-08 Thread Smilax004
Dear Srikant ji,

Thank you very much for the information and encouraging comment.

I will recheck the same when I get live specimen.
Unfortunately we were not allowed to collect specimens during the
field visit. I had gone with IISc team who had permission only to
collect amphibians and reptiles, hence I don't have specimen with me.

From my field notebook I recollect that the flowers were around 1cm
(max 1.5cm no precise measurement is available) - long.

When I rerun the key, I could learnt that H. obtusatus branchlets
inflorescence and/or sometimes leaves more or less furfuraceous (Made
of or covered with scaly particles, such as dandruff) and leaf base is
rounded/acute/auricled whereas, in my specimen leaves, branchlets and
inflorescence were glabrous as mentioned in the key provided by Gamble
(described as L wallichiana) and the leaf base was narrowed at the
base.

I had experimented and experienced a variation in flower length of
flowers of Dendrophthoe falcata and D nilgirica from populations from
KMTR (Tirunelveli) and the Nilgiries (Priya Davidars JBNHS paper). I
had presented this work in the 5th International Canopy conference
held in Bangalore in 2009.

They are two different species.

Look at the buds they are different. In the first post in it was
narrow and pointed whereas, in the second post it is almost rounded.
The first one I identified because the buds were very clear but in the
second post they are not as much clear as that of first post hence
little struggle (for me) to reach the species.

[efloraofindia:76168] Re: COSTUS SPECIOSUS

2011-08-05 Thread Smilax004
It is learned from The Plant list site that Costus speciosus is a
synonym of Cheilocostus speciosus (J.König) C.Specht (http://
www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-343835) of Costaceae family. Lots
of shuffling is happening. Hope this would be the end of most of the
confusions, or I dont know it would lead more.

[efloraofindia:75967] Re: Flora of Arunachal Pradesh- Namdhapa near Miao- Herb 4 for Id- JM

2011-08-04 Thread Smilax004

This is not Lindernia ciliata, for sure as Manudev pointed out, L.
ciliata has sessile leaves and corolla is white with pink throat.

I think it is the same species that I had posted few days back

http://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/browse_thread/thread/9c92e4f1281d83a1/dda4c0b95e27066a?lnk=gstq=Lindernia#dda4c0b95e27066a

The leaves of L antipoda is elliptic obovate and is about 2.5cm. Here,
if my assumption is correct, the leaves are more than 3cm long.
Further, the key in The flora of the Tamil Nadu Carnatic (page 1083)
says that calyx margin serrulate in L antipoda
Calyx margin entire for Lindernia ruellioides

I think this is Lindernia ruellioides even the one that posted on
August 2. (The flora of the Tamil Nadu Carnatic (1983), page 1092)

Giby

Nice pictures of Justicia sp of Acanthaceae.

Looks like J. betonica. Were bract of all the plants green or you
could see some individuals with white bracts (a specialized leaf or
leaflike part, usually situated at the base of a flower or
inflorescence)?

Hesperidae butterflies were seen foraging most of the Acanthaceae
plants.
