[efloraofindia:356228] Re: Tree for ID : New Jersey : 07OCT19 : AK-03

2020-07-30 Thread carmelita

We must look for details/clues in the 3 images offered. The leaf shape is
good for Sugar Maple aka A. saccharum; I have circled what appears to be
the samara which looks the correct shape for A. saccharum. Some also call
it a Rock Maple or Hard Maple when referring to the wood/lumber from this
tree.

Can you remember the size of the leaves?
If the leaves are large we can be looking at A. macrophyllum the samara is
a similar shape to A. saccharum. If the leaves are small then we look
elsewhere.

The plants in that collection come from Madagascar and the southern part of
Africa.
You can please look at Aloe aculeata, A. aristata and A. ferox

There are some others but since I cannot judge the size of your plant,
that's a start.
Hope this is somewhat helpful.

Ushadi,

So much negativity!

I will only apologize that I opted to not read all of your words as it
looked more like a diatribe than anything else. The only part I will answer
is, what is a landscape architect. Landscape architecture is what I studied
for my highest education and I am quite proud of my accomplishment.

Thank you for making me feel like a very low, uneducated, unnecessary
person. You have succeeded in making me feel useless to this group. Perhaps
my opinions have no value after all.

If the esteemed members of this group no longer wish me to be a member, I

[efloraofindia:332326] Re: Ixora taiwanensis ?

2019-10-11 Thread carmelita
No landscaper? If it was a group of gardeners volunteering their time, they
are the landscapers. Also, no Guru needed. Only necessary to visit the
local nurseries where plants are most often purchased and inquire what is
the currently most popular Ixora of that color. Here in the US we have what
we call Master Gardeners and some turn to them for advice - perhaps you
have an equivalent group where you live?

Not necessarily developed by smart gardeners in their own garden, but
rather hybridised by someone who will have patented the plant or at least
applied for a patent. The application for patent will have the most minute
details.

Tjoe Foeng Jin applied for patent 'Pink Pixie'; this plant is now growing
in rather too many gardens in Florida and Georgia.
https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP15026P2/en

Other patented Ixora can be excluded due to bloom color such as:
1994 Diana Zaandam's 'Diora' has white blooms

Occasionally, a garden plant will create a sport (I recall my father going
into great detail to explain how we should always look for sports); the
gardener can, after much work, apply for a patent for what began as a sport.
1995 Fabia C Pitman's 'Frankie Hipp' has white blooms with petals having
thin pink margins - it began as a sport on a 'Nora Grant' Ixora

After a new Ixora is discovered/developed, one needs a grower and then a
supplier. IndiaMart lists several of these:
https://dir.indiamart.com/impcat/ixora-plant.html

[efloraofindia:332300] Re: Ixora taiwanensis ?

2019-10-11 Thread carmelita
Dear everyone,
Perhaps this would be oversimplifying but, since the plant is part of the
landscaping at the Surat apartment complex of one of our esteemed members,
please, why not inquire at the management office? They might provide
contact information for the landscaper architect who might then provide a
list of plants utilized at that property.

Using plant keys is an option but sadly, the information and images
provided do not allow for the use of keys beyond an educated guess. We seem
to begin with an assumption that this plant is a dwarf - it's entirely
possible that the landscape design team instructed the maintenance crew to
keep the Ixora pruned to a height of 3 feet. One cannot know without asking.

Ixora is native to India and nearby countries yet it is cultivated all over
the world, many times the plant is hybridized and cloned to produce plants
identical in characteristics such as bloom size and color.

In your search on the internet you found that some have blunt, obtuse petal
tips and have therefore ruled those out. The internet is flooded with
'wrong' images and 'incorrect' information. Please may I suggest that you
find the original documentation for the registration of the hybrids.

The suggested name Ixora taiwanensis is a misnomer; stating that it is all
over the internet only proves how much people copy from others. Some call
it I. singaporensis and/or I. chinensis. At least they know the plant is
Asian.

Since we are guessing, my best guess would be I. coccinea 'Dwarf Red' but
if we are taking the scientific approach it would be safer to call this
Ixora. sp. until more information is known.

[efloraofindia:330853] Re: BEAUTIFUL FLOWERING VINE AT CHANDIGARH'S NAGAR VAN

2019-09-25 Thread carmelita
I'm not certain if it is A. elegans or A. grandiflora.

That being said, A. elegans escaped cultivation and is considered to be an
agricultural weed in Australia and in the Southern U.S. Also look for
printed information using the synonym A. littoralis.

In the Himalyas it has the ability to displace the native A. acuminata and
A. indica and A. manchuriensis.

Certain butterflies depend on the native A. vines and the A. elegans has
the ability to kill/poison the butterflies.

2019-08-30 Thread carmelita
It appears to be a short, compact plant rather than the standard tall
sunflowers.

There is a purple leaf vein visible.

We cannot see the flower fully opened but you might try looking at
Helianthus annuus 'Mrs. Mars'.

Since you found this in a garden there are many other possibilities.

2019-08-30 Thread carmelita
I will assume your suggestion that the leaves are trifoliate was merely an
error while doing copy/paste from a previous message so am ignoring that
description of the leaves for this plant.

Looking at the list again for Battery Park, they have Amelanchier arborea,
Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Cole's Secret' aka Apple Serviceberry, A.
canadensis. The three are listed as trees.

For Juneberry the list has only one:
Amelanchier lamarckii; it is also listed as a tree.

My suggestion that it may be a Highbush blueberry shows 3 on the list:
Vaccinium corymborsum 'Herbert' aka Highbush blueberry, one as V.
corymbosum (no cultivar listed), and Vaccinium corymbosum 'Berkley' aka
Highbush blueberry.

Was the plant you photographed at tree or a tallish shrub?

Did you take the time to smell the flower or foliage? How tall was the

There is a list of all plants growing at Battery Park.

Your plant could be:
Heuchera 'Plum pudding',
H. micrantha var. diversifolia ‘Purple Palace’,
H. ‘Cherries Jubilee’, or
H. ‘Pewter Veil’.

You can most likely rule out 'Silver Scrolls', 'Snow Angel' and
'Whitecloud' as they are the wrong color.

2019-02-19 Thread carmelita
Without more information or more images, all we can do is throw guesses at
this plant. The cones in Aarti's image appear to be unripe so we do not
know what color they will be at maturity.

If this is a landscape plant it may not be the Juniperus virginiana as that
grows to be a rather large tree; not a good choice for a mixed border.

Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii is a possibility but without more
information, it's anyone's guess.
https://www.conifers.org/cu/Juniperus_chinensis.php
http://extension.uga.edu/publications/detail.html?number=B625=Landscape%20Plants%20for%20Georgia

If it is Juniperus bermundiana, the cones should have matured by October.

Cephalotaxus fortunei would grow to be a 10-foot tall tree.
Since this appears to be planted in a border, try looking at C.
harringtonia 'Prostarata' which would be suitable for a border as it
remains short.

2019-02-09 Thread carmelita
When I research Malus John Downie I am seeing results from the UK so
probably not.
I looked to see which crabapple trees so well in the hot weather in Atlanta
and find that Prairiefire is often suggested.
There are many different varieties of crabapple that would grow well in the
Atlanta area and many look similar..

2019-02-08 Thread carmelita
Yes, there are too many possible answers but each plant pot should have a
label at a nursery. People tend to treat Chrysanthemums as 'disposable'
temporary decorations. The closest I can see to your images would be what
is known as Lavender Daisy Chrysanthemum. When I worked as a floral
designer I was able to take home the discarded plants and rejuvenate them
and replant them in the spring.

[efloraofindia:316615] My sources.

2019-02-07 Thread carmelita
By now everyone knows I am not a trained botanist.
Someone has asked for my sources. I will list them now so that people
looking to identify plants in the US can access.

The first is garden.org also known as The National Gardening Association
(totally free to join and there is a forum to request ID). My name on
garden.org is greene.

The next is Dave's Garden (one can join for free but in order to access the
entire site there is a fee which I refuse to pay).

For wildflowers or plants referred to as weeds, I often use
https://wildflowersearch.org/

For wild edibles I trust Green Deane, his website is www.eattheweeds.com

Another is
http://wwwmissouribotanicalgarden.org/plantfinder/plantfinderresearch.aspx

I hope I have typed these correctly I use several other sources but those
are the main ones.

There are also plant keys that can be used; some of them cost money which
again I refuse to pay.

If there is a decent photo I use 'search Google for this image' then do
further research to narrow down the ID.
For the currently accepted botanical name, I use The Catalogue of Life
http://www.catalogueoflife.org/col/
and also double check with The Plant List.http://www.theplantlist.org/

When someone shows images and requests an ID, all we can do is offer
suggestions. It is up to the person who took the photos to compare our
suggestions to the plant that they photographed.
I am very tired and hope my message makes sense. Thank you.

2019-02-06 Thread carmelita
(Please forgive that I have used copy/paste to make this message - today I
am very tired.)
When we say that a particular plant does not 'occur' in any given location,
we are talking about a natural occurrence. There are several Norway Maples
that have been planted in Georgia. There are different hybrids such as:
Acer platanoides 'Crimson King", A. patanoides 'Maltese Cross', A.
patanoides 'Novusch', 'Paldiski', 'Rezek', 'Walderseel''. there may be
others but that's as far as I have researched. And I agree that we need
more information such as the bark/trunk, front and back of the leaves,
fruits/seed pods, etc. We can only offer guesses when given a small amount
of information.
