RE: [info-tech] Following the Leaders Project

2005-03-31 Thread Kuhl, Douglas

Kathy,

What
type of school position(teachers, principals, and etc...) is this intended
for? It appears to be directed to teachers, not tech coordinators,
correct?

Thanks
for your reply.

  IASB is working with a
federal program secured by Senator Tom Harkin called Following the Leaders
that provides two web-based technology tools to Iowa public schools at no cost and the
training to implement those tools, also at not cost. These two programs are
appropriate for grades 3 to 11 and include content in reading, grammar and
mechanics, and mathematics, with limited content also available in science,
  informational skills, and work skills.

  Eighty Iowa school buildings
from all levels participated in the 2002-05 school year. They were part of an
eleven state project that included 600 schools nationwide. The funding has
been extended and expanded for this spring and the 2005-06 school year with
  Iowa able to
  expand the project significantly.

  Below are descriptions of
  the two programs:

  homeroom.com
  This is a diagnostic
assessment tool that has a test bank of 200,000 Iowa Test like questions in
math, reading comprehension, and grammar and mechanics for grades 3-11 given
either on-line or on paper. These questions are linked to the Iowa grade level
indicators and are in an Iowa Test like format. It also generates useful
reports and these reports are available in multiple formats - skills-based,
item-based, final score based, compared to other tests, etc. Plus there are
some Internet resources available to parents, students, and teachers.
This should never be used as a second assessment. The questions are only at
FACE VALUE like Iowa Tests. Its another diagnostic assessment tool that will
complement diagnostic assessments teachers already have in
  place.

  This is a web-based
tutorial available to students in grades 3-11 (and struggling learners in
grade 12). There are lessons in reading comprehension, vocabulary,
mathematics, and information skills in grades 3-8. There are some lessons in
algebra, science, and work force skills as well as the above listed at the
high school interest level written at the grade 5 reading level. The
interactive lessons last from 15 - 20 minutes. Kids can access them at home,
in community centers - wherever they have Internet access. Kids seem to like

[info-tech] State Mandate on SIF compliance

2005-03-31 Thread Scott Fosseen
It has came to my attention that Wordware has sent out an email to schools
in Okolona and Iowa stating that by Jan 1, 2006 all districts are mandated
to implement SIF compliant software. Iowa currently has no mandate on SIF
or even a state pilot project.

SIF (Schools Interoperability Framework)
http://www.sifinfo.org/
SIF allows districts to update information in on program such as their
Student Information System and push the data out to all other SIF compliant
software packages such as, Lunch, Library and Transportation systems. I do
expect that in the future that SIF will replace Project EASIER for
reporting.

Currently 1 district in our AEA is in the process of implementing SIF.
Prairie Lakes currently has one of the primary components of the project.
Any district interested in learning more about SIF can contact me.

Thanks

[info-tech] Web site

2005-03-31 Thread Johnson, Vicki

I have been trying to learn HTML, ASP for our website. I
want something that is more user friendly than ours is. It was set up
several years ago and there is one student here that knows the whole thing and
I am trying to learn.

We are thinking about going out to a website service.
Could you give me feed back as to what you do for your website and who your
service is with?

Thanks

At
North Kossuth, we design, update, and host our own website on our own
server. We use MS Front Page software. Our Web Page Design class
usually generates some students who want to keep working on our site. The
MS/HS Secretary keeps the site updated with the daily stuff - athletic
schedules, student announcements, menu, Board agendas, Board minutes, etc.
The Business Ed. teacher also works on more long-term changes - teacher
pictures, classes taught by each teacher, etc. I've never learned Front
Page, but from everything I am told by the students and staff that know it, the
software is easy to learn and use.

I use Pagemill (it came free with most of our G3 macs) -- it is very easy to use and will ftp the new pages to our Windows web server. The only drawback is that it is not very comprehensive. It will let you go to source mode and enter HTML code by hand to get the fancier effects.

Vicki,

 We
offer a class in website publishing using Front Page. They are
responsible for our school website. The students are given assignments
and then they save it to an unpublished website. The instructor reviews
it and then publishes it to the viewable website. Its not the best
website but it accomplishes the dual tasks of being an educational experience
and also as the school website. When I look at it and I think it could be
a lot better, I hold my tongue for two reasons, number 1, I dont want to
do it, and more importantly, we are, after-all, an educational institution.
Once in awhile Ill hear a comment about the website from the public about
a link not working quite right. I tell them that it is done by students and who
are just learning. They understand and are glad to see that students are
actually doing the work as part of an educational experience.

 The
easiest thing would be to hire some one else to do it. Our administration
and school board chose to have our students responsible for our website, fully
aware that it may not be perfect. You may want to visit with your
administration and school board about it. As a former educator for 37
years, I would recommend that you take advantage of the educational opportunity
if you can.

George

PS We host our website on our own server.

We do the exact same thing at MNW as George does at Poky except we don't
have a class for it yet.
Just some kids volunteering most of the time and office workers doing
updates.
I am going to push it to be maintained by the Publishing class next.
They do the yearbook and newspaper and meet daily.

Re: [info-tech] Web site

We use a solution from Global Reach in Ames. All page
editing is done via and easy to use web interface. The Global Reach
solution allows specific people access to add/change/delete pages only in
sections they are authorized for. It does not require any HTML knowledge,
if you can run a standard word processor you can add web pages. One of the
key features is that as a district you specify the "Look and Feel" of the
site. All pages will then conform to the image the district wants to
present. All page linking is managed by the web software and is capable of
automaticaly removing links when specific data is no longer relevant.

So assign the "Lunch" section to the school cooks, "Sports" to
the Coach, and so forth. Also included are several "Dynamic Modules" that
will allow Calendar of Events, Feedback forms, FAQ, and I believe Discussion
boards and basic surveys will also be added within the year.

Global Reach presented at our March Tech meeting and as soon
as I am able I will publish the presentation.

The cost is $160/month signing a 2 year contract with Global
Reach. Web hosting is E-Rate priority 1 eligible. I expect that most
districts will pay $50-$80 per month for the service once they apply for it
through e-rate. There are other pricing options available as
well.

As a user of the program I have been happy with the ease of
posting content to the web site.

At Eagle Grove we have students maintain activities and athletics pages
through a dual credit course with ICCC (Fundamentals of Web Design) while
the main pages are my Responsibility.

The student use DreamWeaver and GoLive. I personally use DreamWeaver and a
couple of free WYSIWYG editors that run on OS X.

If you were in the open source world, there are some free CMS (Content
management software) packages available that are similar to what Scott was
talking about from Global reach. They have a pretty steep learning curve,
but I think that is one area that we are looking into.

Also there was just a message sent out from AEA267 http://www.iowapages.org

Which is similar to Prairie Lake's solution, not as in depth, but similar.

I truly believe that students should be involved as it gives ownership and
it is great PR to show your community that you are teaching technology and
can show visible proof of such. Once in a while you get a kid who excels
and can teach you bundles also.

My goal is to learn PHP and design our site on that.
