[info-tech] Laptop Carts
Who out there has laptop carts, or mobile labs. We are looking at getting one of them. Our high school principal is wanting one but we have a lot of problems with our wireless network working so I want to stay away from them. I would rather have a couple new labs of terminal services like we have now but using terminal clients and not old computers. Could you guys please give me input of what you think. Any questions just ask and I'll respond asap. Thanks Mitch Mueller Emmetsburg Community Schools

Re: [info-tech] Laptops Carts
We've deployed four mobile labs in the past year a half, 2 at the MS and 2 at the HS. Our wireless isn't perfect, but we put wireless access points on the labs that might go to dead spots, and that's worked out pretty well. Three of my labs are HP labs with HP carts. One of those is a MiniNote lab. The other lab is a Dell lab. We like all of them very much. I, too, felt a little like we were putting the cart before the horse by purchasing mobile computing without very good wireless, but we've made it work. It's nice to get technology into the classrooms. My concern now is how budget money will stretch to sustain mobile technology. It's one thing to purchase equipment once. It's another when you look at upkeep, repair, replacement, and expansion. Sarah Sarah M. Re: [info-tech] Laptop Carts
We have two mobile labs in our elementary. One thing I have done is to have a wireless access point set up on the cart itself. When the mobile lab is in a classroom, the base is then connected to the network in the classroom, thus keeping a strong signal for the mobile lab. There is also a printer on the cart connected to the access point to provide for printing to be done in the classroom where the lab is located. Just info to share for what it is worth. Re: [info-tech] Laptops Carts
Mitch, Questions for you to consider are: Who will really be using the mobile lab in the high school? What laptops will you put in the mobile lab? How will the mobile lab be scheduled? As I shared in my previous response, we have two mobile labs in the elementary with ibooks. These were from grants that I received. They are primarily in the second grade classrooms as those teachers have shown their use of them. We have had a mobile lab in the junior high with ibooks but they did not hold up well with the student use. This also was from a grant. They were used for keyboarding because of a lack of regular lab time. That has been changed. Just need to consider where, why and how a mobile lab is used before moving in that direction. Hope this helps. Can't say what you should do, each situation can be different. RE: [info-tech] Laptop Carts
Okoboji has a ton of mobile labs. At the H.S. we have one for each core subject area: Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies. Plus, one for study hall, one in the Learning Skills room, and one shared by the Non-core subjects, and one in the Media Center available for check-out from anyone (but it is mainly used for PSEO classes). All but one of these were purchased with grant money. At the M.S. we have one cart for 5-6, one cart for 7-8, and one additional cart available for all. At the E.S. we have one cart. All buildings have a wireless network as all of our teachers also have laptops. However, when I first got here, we had less carts, and each cart had its own AP because there was no wireless network. This worked pretty well. The teachers were shown how to plug the cart into the wall and wait for all the blinky lights to come on. Our carts are in use much of the time, and some departments at the H.S. and some classes at the M.S. 'fight' over availability. We are on a 4 year refresh cycle, so every year a portion of the fleet is decommissioned and replaced. I hope this helps. RE: [info-tech] Laptop Carts
Mitch, It looks like your principal wants a wireless cart and you want a couple anchored labs of terminal clients. Are you asking for opinions on which would be better? You can always build computer labs, but do you need mobile computing? Would it be beneficial to have the teachers/students compute in the classrooms or locations other then where the anchored labs are located. The mobile lab is for mobility and more flexibility in your day to day computing needs. A descent wireless solution would need to be in place for the mobile cart or what would be the point. If you are going to create a mobile lab and leave it in one place, then I would do an anchored lab. It all depends on how the staff, students, and teachers are going to use the technology. Usually, I see schools do a combination of the two types of labs. Mobile labs and anchored labs are good solutions, but both are answers to different questions/needs. [info-tech] I implore your assistance
Greetings all, Yes I did just use the word implore in my subject line, because that is what I am truly doing, I am calling upon you all in supplication (to use Merriam-Webster) to help me in my time of need. I have been given the task of coming up with a rough draft for technology curriculum for k-8. We are looking to align with the NETS technology standards. Since we are starting from scratch (meaning we have nothing in writing) I am asking if anyone has a k-12 tech curriculum that they would be willing to share. Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated. Re: [info-tech] Laptops Carts
Mitch et al, We run two carts of 16 in the Middle School. We have two labs in the middle school, one is used pretty much all the time by the technology classes. The other was scheduled 95% of the day. There was a need and an opportunity with STAR schools to get the two mobile labs. IT is not ideal to me as they usually need both carts to let each student have a computer. The students are pretty good with them, but we have had some dropped. The machines are now in years 5 and 6 and so we are looking to replace them. iT just came down to not having space, but having the need. I would rather have a physical lab, hard wired desktop machines because that is just how I roll. But in the end we serviced the students and met a need in the best way that we could.
