Re: [info-tech]Xirrus Wireless

2009-05-21 Thread Paul Heyer
I would agree with what has been said. We have 4 arrays set up and have had no
problem with any of them. I take that back I had one that required a software
update because it kept resetting itself every 12 minutes or so. When I had my
original survey done we thought one array would cover two floors of my
elementary building but the signal was very weak in the corners of the lower
floor. Xirrus did give us a free array to cover the lower floor which greatly
improved our signal strength.

Unsolicited plug follows so you are warned.

We went with Xirrus arrays aver a year ago, and have been very happy
with them, granted we aren't throwing too much at them yet, but very
good hardware. When we got our quote and did the surveys we bought
the number of arrays they said we needed. Turns out that we need
another one. SO I just was handed my new FREE array to make up for

We have had 2 arays installed for 2 years and added another 2 this year. The
only problem we encountered is 1 of the 2 new installs was rebooting itself at
times. I called tech support who connected remotely and updated the software. I
even recieved a follow up email from the tech the next day asking if things are
working correctly which doesnt happen very often.

The last 2 units came with a choice on power options, one being a 110 outlet
close to the installation and the second is power over gigabit. I did not have
an outlet close to the one of those installations so it is running the power
over gigabit which works great.

Everyone-

All of this took me by surprise the other day, as I heard about first on KCCI
News in the morning. I knew the state was piloting software like this, but
hadn't heard anything more on it until last week.

Anyway, we have signed up, and I have my account created. Everything is done
through the state's web portal, which is the same portal for parents and
administrators. Once your account is created, you contact the state and they
finish the setup. You can add alerts for the just the district, or break it
down by school building. So, if you only had an issue at one building, you can
let just those people signed up for those alerts know. To create a
notification, you login, create alert and verify it. On my tests, only to a
few contacts, the messages appear in under a minute.

Once we have all of our people that need to send alerts signed up and setup, we
will put out information on our website, newsletters and the Messenger. The
state has even provided media releases and cut sheets with all of the
information on it.

For free, it looks pretty good.

Hi,

A new option to compete with OneNotify.com and SnowCap.

Iowa School Alerts allows you to sign up and receive notifications when a
school or school district closes, has a delayed start or an early dismissal.
There are two ways to receive notifications:

E-mail alerts - Receive e-mail notices when a school or school district you
are interested in delays starting or closes early. Do you have multiple e-mail
addresses or more than one person who should be notified? Do you want to keep a
watch on multiple school buildings or districts? No problem! With Iowa School
Alerts you can have notifications sent to as many e-mail addresses or
e-mail-enabled device addresses as you would like, for as many schools or
districts as you like.
RSS Feed - Iowa School Alerts provides a Rich Site Summary (RSS) feed for
websites that wish to give their site users a comprehensive list of
notifications. This is a great way for the media, communities and
school-related organizations to publish notifications on their own website.

Re: [info-tech] used recertified computers

2007-05-01 Thread Paul Heyer
I just purchased a computer from Dan last week, not for the school but a
customer. It was a bit difficult knowing what was actually on his list
and what had been sold. I did receive a nice computer within a week of
ordering that worked just fine, priced right and with warranty.

[info-tech] thin client

2007-04-25 Thread Paul Heyer
Is anyone using thin client to reduce cost of replacing computers? This
would be in a K-8 one building setting.

I would be interested in any advice or experiences that anyone has had
with this.

How many application connections to the server is typical?

Can I set up this up using Linux and still run Microsoft Office
applications?

Thanks for the help

[info-tech] several questions

2006-11-02 Thread Paul Heyer
With our favorable bond issue we will be doing some upgrading in our
building(K - 8). We are looking at laptops on a cart to be shared on
each floor of the elementary building. Any
suggestions...issuesexperiences? With the 12 wireless laptops we are
currently using my assumption is buy as much warranty as possible? Any
policies on students that abuse the laptops? Any hints for teachers to
attempt to control this abuse?

Along with the laptops we will be going wireless. What is everyone
using? Pros/Cons of using Linksys products as opposed to the more
expensive hardware?

Hello, all!

I have been spending the last month working on/creating elementary
progress reports (mid-terms and now the trimester ones) via JMC. I
am feeling somewhat close to mastery of the skill (an expert to those
of you who live more than 50 miles from me . . .--HA). Therefore, I
am throwing out the offer that if there is a group interested in how
to do this/how this all works (kind of like a JMC users group), I am
willing to host a session through it not only on the set up/
administrative side but also via the gradebook/entry side for
teachers. Mornings work best (unitl around 1:00), so I don't have to
get a sub for my classes. If you're interested, let me know and we
can put together a date. Office personnel and/or teachers are
welcomed to attend to see how it all works. I'll even provide
testimony from those who have been using at our elementaries and how
much they like it. (Hand picked, of course).

I can't see a way to bring them back.
I tried uninstalling office and then reinstalling but the problem remains.
