Actually, I can see her point, and I have no problem with linux. She may very well have been unable to install the client and drivers needed for her broadband modem, and while Office 2003 formats are fairly well supported by open office, office 2007 presents a real challange, or it did last I looked. Also keep in mind, the classes she was taking absolutely required word. Why? Who knows, maybe she was taking a class on MS word? Sure, you or I would have no issues with this, I could even get it to load on linux, you probably would have even less trouble, but she couldn't. Now every teacher (okay not every, but quite a few) is asking why I don't place them in the classrooms. They all need more computers and feel that they should get these prior to them being sold. I explain that these machines are old and that we have a replacement policy in place and if I keep placing older computers in rooms, then I will eventually have to manage some 50,000 machines (yeah that is an exageration, but give me some artistic license here). So I am asking all of you, how do you handle this type of request (Other than Want in one hand and spit in the other) Do any of you have written policies on computer replacement, public auction, computer to student ratio. I am just battling the staff on this and am very frustrated. Here's the thing. We all want to use the old hardware, but we all know that eventually we are going to have to buy new. Yes, you can buy new computers for about the same price as new terminals, but why would you? Cost is only part of the solution offered by the terminal server environment. Just maintaining your sanity because you have only a dozen computers to update in the district instead of 200 is worth a lot. -- Original Message -- From: Tim Buenz [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us Date: 26 Apr 2007 07:30:04 -0500 Hi, We used to have a terminal server setup at the HS and older machines as clients. Any suggestions? -- Original Message -- From: George Tuttle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2007 11:14:13 -0600 Techs: Thanks for all the responses to my posting. That was my last stirrem up posting before retirement. As some of you know, I am retiring completely on June 30th. I will be able to spend more time driving my 30 A and no time worrying about forced updates. My first computer class was on a mainframe terminal in 1965 so I've seen a lot of changes in 42 years. I assumed a part-time tech coordinator (I never did know where that title originated) role in 1980 and the rest is history. It's been a fun and sometimes stressful run. I'm kinda glad its over and yet I'm sure I will miss it. I have a couple of concerns as I pass on the baton. There are a few people left that started out as teachers and then for various reasons, became computer coordinators. The microcomputer swept through our society like a firestorm! Schools as well as society in general were caught off-guard. Schools were called on to teach our society about microcomputers but had no staff or hardware to do it. No standards existed. To assume the title of computer coordinator, all you needed was a little knowledge and a lot of guts. The one good thing was that most computer coordinators were classroom teachers at one time or another. Although many mistakes were made, much of the beginning work was based on educational principles. For example, applications were not taught for many years. I taught programming (anyone remember Applesoft BASIC or CP/M BASIC) and moved on to PASCAL and different versions of C. After a few years, applications such as Wordstar, Visicalc, and dBase started to dominate the commercial market. Schools were then expected to teach applications. The third year I taught Applewriter, PFS-file, and Advanced Visicalc. The fourth year I taught /// E-Z Pieces, the forerunner of Appleworks, on Apple /// computers. Here I was, a person who could hardly type 20 wpm, teaching students how to type. Fortunately that corrected itself with the elimination of typewriters and the introduction of computers and Wordperfect which ruled the business world. I moved from teaching into keeping the computer systems running that were used to teach applications. Since 1991, I have spent the lion's share of my time supporting computers and gradually shifting to the most time supporting our network. I went from the red books of Novell through all the versions of NT server, 3.5, 3.51, 4, 2000, and now 2003. Through all of these major transitions I had to keep reminding myself that supporting sound education was really my job. In other words, the schools' computer network was not there to provide me with a job but to make the school staff more effective in doing their job. Herein is my biggest concern. As the role of computer coordinator has shifted more to the technical side, I see the possibility of losing focus on the real reason we have computers and computer networks in schools. Just a caveat. Enough ranting. In the eternal words of Bob Hope, I think, Thanks for the memories. Re: [info-tech] forced updates
George, this is not going to make you happier about the updates, but we've been switching over to a terminal server configuration here at schaller-crestland, and the school and I could not be happier. You cannot imagine the relief of not having to deal with every little update, patch, and problem on every machine. Within about 3 years the plan is to completely switch over the network, at which point there will be approximately 12 machines in the entire system that are not dumb terminals. All things considered, the DST updates took about 15 mins. -- Original Message -- From: George Tuttle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2007 21:40:36 -0600 Techs: I posted the following to a web blog and thought you might enjoy reading it' I am a tech at a school district. I have a number of machines running Windows 98 just fine. I never asked Microsoft to include automatic daylight savings time. However, including it and now with the change renders my software obsolete. I restored and still own a 1930 Model A ford. I had no problems finding updates and parts to redo it. Maybe that's why Ford is having financial problems. They made their cars in 1930 so well that I didn't have to upgrade!! I still have the car and it runs fine. I'm not sure I can say the same about my software. With the DST change, Microsoft does not support any operating system that I can find beyond 2000 Pro. They have a really easy way to patch XP and 2000 but have decided to declare their other stuff obsolete by not providing easy to install patches. According to their website, the solution is to upgrade. Hmm, what a nice revenue stream. I appreciate some of the pricing breaks that Microsoft provides schools but don't appreciate dropping major support after 5 years and minimal support after 10 years. Where do I sign up? -- Original Message -- From: Scott Fosseen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 15:28:27 -0600 I am looking at providing a new service to districts and would like your input. Would your district be interested in a Internet based backup service to backup critical district files off site. I have found tools that would backup files from your networks to a server housed at the AEA. The data is compressed and encrypted before being transmitted over the Internet. The main benefit to this service gives you an automated off-site backup to be used in case of a disaster. I would expect that participating districts would backup their student information systems and other important data. I would not expect this service to replace local backup of equipment and files, but provide an extra layer of protection. The client software is Windows based, but has the ability to backup any network connected drive the Windows system can access. To participate you will need a Windows workstation, but the data to be backed up can be on the Windows, Mac, Novell, or Linux server. I am looking at installing an evaluation version of the software on a server here in Fort Dodge. If you would like to participate in this test let me know and we will setup the client software at your district and configure it to backup. If the test is successful and there is interest from districts I will work on what the pricing will be for the service. If you are interested in this trial please contact me to make arrangements. Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions as well. _ Scott Fosseen - Systems Engineer -Prairie Lakes AEA http://fosseen.us/scott _ Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. - Albert Einstein _ --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us] - Archived messages from this list can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/ - --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by the schaller-crest.k12.ia.us server.] --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by the schaller-crest.k12.ia.us server.] --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us] - Archived messages from this list can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/ -
Re: [info-tech] My Shop Days coming thru!
Well, yeah, there were better ways, but none that would feel quite so good :) -- Original Message -- From: JON W HUESER [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 11:47:53 -0600 I slipped back into my shop ways yesterday. I have some compaq computers that have built in speakers. I was tired of telling the kids to turn them down so I just cut the wires. Sorry for all of you born tech people who could tell me a better way, but I was in my previous life a shop teacher and sometimes I am just dying to use the old tools. Since Tim is a old shop teacher, I am sure he understands. Once again, I have peace in my room Thanks, Jon W. Hueser Comp/Tech. Coord. East Greene Comm. Schools 405 12th Str. RE: [info-tech] HP drivers...
Sorry, no luck with those drivers. -- Original Message -- From: Jason Kehoe [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 9 Nov 2004 10:45:25 -0600 Kurt, I sent you a sound driver for the HP Pavilion 513c to your Schaller-Crestland email account. Hope it works for you. Let me know if it worked or if you need further help. Jason Kehoe Network Engineer Prairie Lakes AEA 8 (515) 574-5477 (800) 669-2325 x5477 [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 2004 10:22 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [info-tech] HP drivers... I've recently had to do a rebuild on an HP pavilion 513c. For various reasons I did not do a restore from the restore partition, but instead rebuilt from a clean harddrive. This is not normally a problem with most computers as all of the drivers are usually available from the website, however, this is not the case with the 513c. HP has seen fit to deny access through any reasonable means to the audio drivers for the 513c, why this is is a mystery, but after calling several times (being hung up on once and sent to dead lines twice, then threatening to sue) they finally put me in touch with a person who claimed to be a technician. For some reason, this tech was firmly convinced that telling me that the chipset was AC'97 compatible was all the answer I needed or deserved. After much arguing, she insisted that the Board was an intel board and the drivers were available from intel's website. The board is a Trigem, and Trigem refers you back to HP's spiral of death. The chipset is an Intel chipset however, and they refer you to the board manufacturer's website, which naturally leads you back to HP's spiral of death. So, I guess I'm going to buy a sound card and plug it in to a PCI slot and be done with the mess. The Moral of this story is rather simple.
