Good question as we have had to suspend some students from using the
Internet and network for punishment and it does add more work for the
teachers as they have to come up with some other plan for the student.

Re: [info-tech] board policy - Internet use

2006-08-17 Thread JON W HUESER
Brad,

We use the same model that Webster City is using. With the internet being such
a part of the curriculum anymore and only a couple of parents not wanting kids
on it we have taken that route. Saves on paperwork.

We do have it posted in the Student handbooks and a condensed version goes out
in our registration email.

BTW: we do the same things with our media consent form.

Thanks,

Re: [info-tech] board policy - Internet use

2006-08-17 Thread Brad Kruse
What would a teacher or principal do if a student was reading a Playboy
magazine (printed copy) in the back of a classroom during a boring lecture
session? Should we be providing the same type of punishment for online abuse?
I think we will continue to use the same one as we have now as the Iowa Assn of
School Boards still suggest using this type of sign-off policy. They have
simiplified in the past year, however.

RE: [info-tech] board policy - Internet use[Scanned]

2006-08-17 Thread Murphy, Mark
Title: Message

That was our old model in Webster City.
Several years ago we changed to an informed consent model. Basically we
say computers are an essential tool in modern education and by default all
students have access to it.  Parents not wanting to allow their kids to use
it need to notify the superintendent office in writing.

For years now, we have had a board policy requiring parents to read and
sign before their student is allowed access to the Internet.  It is again
up for review this week and I am just wondering if something like this is
outdated.  Since the Internet and network use has grown over the
years to the extent that it is almost a requirement of students to use in
order to complete built-in to course requirements, research, online
courses, etc., I am wondering if the board policy could be dropped
entirely.  Are any other school districts changing this policy if they

students and parents. FWIW, I was surprised by the number of
elementary parents who did not give their child permission to use the
internet at registration.

RE: [info-tech] board policy - Internet use

2006-08-17 Thread Pearson, Jeremy

Brad-

We still have that in place
here in Fort Dodge.
Students (and staff) who want their own login to the Internet must attend an
Internet Workshop before they can get access.  After students attend that
workshop, their contract must be signed by both the student and the parent.  We
have seen several cases where the parents do not allow their kids access to the
Internet.
