Our 1:1 is full-time. The students have the laptops 24/7, and turn them in

RE: [info-tech] 1:1 Question

2009-10-26 Thread Timothy A. limbert
We are in our second year of a 1:1 deployment in grades 9-12. All 1:1
student laptops are Apple, as are our main servers. Teachers in grades PK-3
and 9-12 all have Apple laptops, as do special-ed staff, counselor, study
hall supervisor, and ELL/At-Risk teacher. Grades 4-8 are all Windows, and
they will become all Mac when the Fonda building is closed at the end of
this year, and grades 4-8 move to Newell. At that time, we will extend the
1:1 down to grade 5. As for numbers, we have 207 Mac laptops considered
part of the 1:1 deployment (students + teachers).

Since the Apple question gets asked a lot, I want to put in my $.02 that I
don't believe that a successful 1:1 depends on platform. Do your homework,
and use what best meets your needs. The main advantages of Apple, as I see
them, are their experience in the 1:1 area, the emphasis they place on
education (and the knowledgeable people they employ in that area), and the
fact that they can consult on and sell the total package of hardware,
software, servers, clients, management, imaging, deployment, wireless, etc.
It makes for a well-integrated system, and one place to call for help.
There are also advantages to a Windows-based environment, particularly if
there's already been a heavy investment in Windows servers and clients, or
if existing tech staff are already heavily trained and certified on Windows.

George,

Are you really meeting at 10:30 pm on Wed? I realize that it would be
after the substate game, but I just wanted to make sure I was reading the
time correctly.

Dan,

Our current Superintendent has been through 2 1:1 programs and both were
polar opposites. He echos what everyone would probably tell you, the most
important thing is the Professional Development to make the program a
success. Your staff needs to buy into what it is really about and so does
your administration and board. You just have to make things work.

I would recommend attending Apples 1:1 sessions that they hold in Westside
in Omaha area. Even if you have no intention of going apple (as Tim said
the programs are OS independent) the ideas and best practices that you
could get out of it are invaluable. I can get you more info on the next
session when I get back in my office later on Tuesday

RE: [info-tech] 1:1 Question

2009-10-26 Thread Murray Gafkjen
We're entering our 5th year, with the second roll-out of new laptops
this fall. We went with Lenovo laptops, the first go-around was with Gateway
tablets. I wish I could say that the time just flew by, but there were too
many lumps along the way. Listening to George, he's on the right track
again. Keeping it simple, if possible, but we know tech isn't, nor is the
network a simple VCR.
If price is no object, consider the Macs. When they can control the
both software/hardware solution, one would hope there would be less bugs in
the system. When we started the 1:1, the district was 50-50 in the labs with
the servers tilting towards Windows. Price, my experience and the
superintendent's leanings had us go with PCs. The highschool teachers had pc
desktops, so I didn't want to throw their experience under the bus.
Besides platform, daily applications, the next biggie is the
network. Biggest complaint is, I can't get on the network. Teachers are
less likely to try new things if a few student can't join the group.
Sometimes that's self inflicted, but it still hinders teachers. They are
less likely to try it again. Dynno, NetOps, Schoolvue are great programs,
but when it's only working 99% of the time with 99% of the students, you
will hear about it.
Ubiquitous 1:1, my true feelings will be share in person, since this
listserv can be Googled and I need my job. So see ya Thursday if not before.

Subject: [info-tech] 1:1 Question

I am asking other school districts who have deployed an effective 1:1
computing environment, are you running Windows devices, Macintosh devices, a
mixture of both ??? How many devices are deployed? We are looking into this
type of deployment and would like some insight from other districts.

Thank you in advance.
