Re: [IRCA] TWR not on 800 in Auroral cx
The last two nights when I listened, Bonaire has been running simultaneous Spanish/English broadcasting. A few words spoken SS, followed by a brief EE translation or vice versa. The transmission quality was watery. Cdx were overall lousy last night for me in the coastal Georgia low country; although SS was up in many spots. It was between 200-300 UTC when I heard TWR last night. Over the years, I don't recall hearing the simultaneous translations. 73 Gil NN4CW ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Static noise issue
Greetings, In the last couple of days, a noise issue has developed. When I get heavy rain, I hear an noise like rubbing two pieces of metal together within the house. a scratching/scraping noise. If I take a portable outside, it seems to go away the farther I get from the house. I kicked the circuit breakers off and it does not do anything. It doesn't do it everytime it rains, but most of the time a heavy shower hits. True I have a metal roof, but the wind does seem to cause the noise. But rain hitting something does. It is really noticeable on a portable, and in the back of the house closer to my antennas, but not on the R8 near the front of the house as much. Of course the R8 is well grounded. The electric frence was arcing the other day, and I fixed that. I even shook the fence during the heavy rain and it did nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KAVT Reception Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] CKBD-600 and CBU-690 both Vancouver BC apply to move to FM
Gary, Yes, I used to have an Winegard SC650 FM Yagi for years, until the weather broke it up. I even replaced it, but it did not last long again. I only had it 20 feet above the ground on a pole too. The strong winds are bad for antennas here. I got FM regularly from Vancouver to Eureka and over to Eastern WA (Spokane, Tri Cities, etc). It was great. Of course, that was before the dial filled up. I still have my Pioneer 9100 in the other room, but it needs a new off/on switch. That is complicated, not the usual two wire job, so I haven't used it in sometime. But it was a good receiver. It blows the circuit breaker when I turn it on. A short of some kind. When I lived in Portland both Bill Block I DXed TV skip, got lots of E Skip, even Ch 4 from Columbus OH, a double hop. Got about 100 TV QSLs and 200-300 on FM. So it was fun. But again, our bad winds have been worse the past few years, so no antenna other than some commercial grade one, would survive. I need to replace a bunch of elements on my little TV antenna after our winds of late. I was even a member of the WTFDA for several years. I am sure any radio will get TPs here. I had a little GE handheld portable with earphones (I think I still have it somewhere), that got the powerhouse JJs. Someone reported hearing TPs with a Crystal Set some years back. It doesn't surprise me as JOUB can be S9+40DB often.

Sounds like some kind of a short induced by the presence of the water. or else something where the water is creating an open ciruit, although this ought to be less likely. I would check for places where either a) something is grounded - like the water, telephone, electrical system - and see if something else, even one of the others, comes close enough for water to cause a short; b) is the metal roof grounded ? Perhaps it needs to be; c) when you shut off all of your breakers, check where the power comes into the house to see if the noise is louder/stronger there - if so there may be a short on the incoming line. In short, any place where water might temporarily create a connection between two metal items which don't normally come in contact could be a cause. Thanks Russ, Now this morning since the weather is improving, no noise issue. I will go out in a bit and check for lose wires, etc. The noise issue is like when you rub two pieces of metal together next to a radio, the scratchy sound you hear on the radio. The heavier the rain, the noisier it was, but not over welming like having the noise next to the radio, but some distance. But again walking outside, it goes away. Patrick my first thought would be that one or more sections of the metal roof may have loosened up during the recent high winds and is making intermittent contact with the rest of the roof or some other object protruding through or in contact with the roof. Rain gutters or metal siding might also produce such results. [IRCA] Static noise update
Greetings, Well, I just came back in and it could be coming from anywhere I guess. I checked some things out, the metal downspouts of the gutter and I found one loose and replaced the screws. Plus where the gas lines go under the house, I wiggle those and I hear a scratching noise against the metal. I smell no gas though, but they are hitting against something, so will have the gas company check them and then maybe ground the pipes going under the house, but they are already grounded coming out of the ground. But I poured a glass of water on the pipes and no noise from that. It is lightly raining now and no noise noted, so I am still in the dark.I did check all of my antennas too. Nthing noted there. But anything is possible.

[IRCA] KEVT in CT - Tent to Bust
Paul, and all, Hotmail/MSN changed to Windows Live and I'm annoyed with it... you're right... what appears on screen does NOT come out on the other end... seems to be an issue with their format Rich Text vs. Plain Text. Now that you've mentioned it, I'm sending this in Plain text to see if it batches it all together again... let's see... It doesn't seem to like sending replies. It was just fine the way it was until someone in Corporate decided to make it better... like IBOC! KEVT - Further listen to the tape, I have nothing strong enough to make out KEVT in any way, and the QRM is so strong I cannot even make out any of the SS wording clear enough, even though I split the seperate channels into seperate recordings. It dissapered after the first two minutes and doesn't sound like a US SS station format. I'm now drawn in the oppossite direction, another station on the other receiver with a talk format in EE... but no IDs either... So Tent to a Bust on KEVT, it's not worth the time and effort at this point, with only few seconds of audio between QRN quick fades. This is a tough week anyway, go to press the Red Suit. [IRCA] Revolutionary IC's Bring Revolutionary Fun in Small Radios
Hello All, For those wondering why Sony never made an improved ICF-2010 (or at least continued to sell the great classic model), the answer is probably because they were too busy responding to the ultimate challenge in modern electronics: how to pack maximum performance into the smallest package. The focus of intense competition not only in digital electronics but also in RF design, micro-miniature IC development has become the ultimate arbiter of the winners and losers in today's radio design competition. Fortunately for AM DXers, manufacturers like Sony and Sangean have taken this intense competition to a new level, and have developed IC's that can literally pack the performance of a Super Radio 1 into a 3-ounce pocket radio (except that the pocket radio will be more selective, and free from images and birdies). Sony's phenomenal 30-pin CXA1129N IC, the heart of the SRF-59, is deeply praised by the Chinese PhD rocket scientist Dr. Xin Feng on his _http://www.fixup.net_ (http://www.fixup.net) web site. Those who dismiss pocket radios as inferior toys are in for a huge shock if they try out this radio...it is fully capable of almost any DX task you choose to give it! Superlative IC's have finally made the tiny pocket radio able to not only compete, but win. Sony is not the only manufacturer who has brought incredible IC's to the pocket AM radio. Sangean's DT-200VX is also a phenomenal performer, with great sensitivity, selectivity, freedom from images and birdies... and 20-memory digital convenience. The intense competition between Sony and Sangean has brought about a true revolution in pocket radio performance, and a true revolution in Ultralight DXer fun! If you have a little pocket change and a little spare time, why not order one, and get in on the fun? 73 and Best Wishes, Gary DeBock **See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop000304) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] KEVT test
One issue with this test was the fact that KEVT is a Mexican format US station running their typical format. There are quite a few Spanish speaking stns on 1210 loggable in much of the US and from more countries than Mexico. Someone without a decent command of the SS language will have difficulties unless that DX station is rather strong and KEVT and a couple Mexicans could be confused even by those who are quite familiar with Mexican music. Also from reports out west, it is possible that they didn't use day power until an hour into the test. 73 KAZ - Original Message - From: Konnie Rychalsky [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Thursday, December 20, 2007 6:14 PM Subject: [IRCA] New List Include me on the poor blighters list too. Re: [IRCA] Email Formatting/Trimming
Most e-lists are geared to accept plain text. Rich Text is used in some word processing apps but it introduces some additional features which not all e-list software works well with and also not all email software works well with either. The name pretty much tells you that it is an enhanced text format. Similarly, many e-lists don't use html either. When you send email from one PC to another, you may not see the bunching unless the receiving email software also isn't compatible with Rich Text. So for e-lists, your default should be plain text. Re: [IRCA] Revolutionary IC's Bring Revolutionary Fun in Small Radios
Gary, thanks for your enthusiasm and for educating us on the latest amazing teeny weeny radio technology. I'd like to pipe in because this has been a fun dialog and has prompted me to buy a few early Christmas gifts for myself, including an SRF-59, M37, Olympus WS300M recorder, and a CCrane twin coil ferrite loop antennna, to supplement the Sangean DT210V and Sangean DT300 already in the baby RX-stable. I've been impressed with the '210 and the '300 over the last couple of years, using them for ultra-lite DXing on my motorcycle tours. Of the mini-rigs, the two tops in sensitivity for me were the '59 and the '210; as such, I'll be commenting on those two only. Overall, with no external antenna, testing with fringe daytimers the winner in the sensitivity department has consistently been the '210, with the '59 down a couple ticks behind it. When listening last night, WBAP was clearly heard on both radios but in the deep fades, the '59 lost signal first and recovered it last. These radios really shine with a little help in the ferrite department, to the point of amazement; surpassing my 25 year old Super Radio II in overall sensitivity and selectivity and giving my Kenwood R2000 a run for its money. Lay the little radios on the ferrite pick-up and it's a whole different ballgame. Twist the knob on CC tuner and the frequency absolutely comes alive - these are real signals, not images. Now, I live quite a distance from any of the Boise locals (20+ miles) so your mileage may vary...but rest assured that you will hear serious domestic DX. The '59 is susceptable to overload when peaking the CC antenna - but, in fact, I've been unable to overload the front-end on the '210V. Pure signal. The Sangean DT210V is actually less susceptable to front-end overload than my Kenwood R2000. In terms of selectivity, the Q of the CC antenna is sharp enough to tighten up the desired listening frequency on both the '59 and the '210. Adjust the direction of the antenna element to null and peak as desired. I would love to test these rigs on the coast, especially with the '210's 9kc digital tuning. Alas, I have learned that my qth (at 3200 feet, with a 5200 foot mountain on the west side of my house) is not good at all for TP's...sigh. Unfortunately, I get audible TP signals only a handful of times a year. So, thank you Gary for piquing my interest, adding to my radio collection with modest $$ output, and enlightening me of the possibilities of UL-DXing. I am really looking forward to reading your Round Two of the mighty-mite shootout. And to all, have a very Merry Christmas, and may '08 bring you that exotic DX catch; be it domestic or from another corner of the world. 73, Bruce Bacon N7BWB Boise County, ID Sony's phenomenal 30-pin CXA1129N IC, the heart of the SRF-59, is deeply praised by the Chinese PhD rocket scientist Dr. Xin Feng on his _http://www.fixup.net_ (http://www.fixup.net) web site. Those who dismiss pocket radios as inferior toys are in for a huge shock if they try out this radio...it is fully capable of almost any DX task you choose to give it! Superlative IC's have finally made the tiny pocket radio able to not only compete, but win. between Sony and Sangean has brought about a true revolution in pocket radio performance, and a true revolution in Ultralight DXer fun! Re: [IRCA] Revolutionary IC's Bring Revolutionary Fun in Small Radios
Bruce, Thanks for the very kind comments. Of course, we Ultralight fanatics already know the tremendous thrills of pocket-radio DX, but it certainly is our brotherly responsibility to educate and motivate those other traditional, somewhat bored DXers to get off the fence, and join in the fun, isn't it? The Ultralight DX boom is really taking off, Bruce, thanks to you and about 17 other true believers. The list comments are truly only the tip of the iceberg. Your comments are exactly the reason why curious skeptics should invest a little pocket change in revolutionary DX fun! 73 and Hot Pocket-Rocket DX to All, Gary **See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop000304) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] TP's for 12-20-07
Another quick check morning, at 1445UT. Unlike Dennis, there I heard some audio on 279, but not much. Generally, it was just weak carriers, even 1566 (though the propagation monitor says that it recovered somewhat at the pattern change at 1730UTC long after I went to work). 594 was the kingpin, with quite a readable signal, with 747 and 567 occasionally readable, all Japanese of course. 774 and 756 had occasional unreadable audio, both Asian, but 603 seemed down under (an odd frequency to hear when conditions were otherwise poor. 1134 had quite a good carrier, unlike most channels, but no audio. And yet, 160m DXers in Ontario were reporting good conditions to Japan this morning. Maybe that's where the DX went? best wishes, Nick Nick Hall-Patch Victoria, B.C.
