Martin, I heard the same code ad as well. The code from CFFX was much slower

Also heard ESPN radio in there at 11:18 PM with some code so maybe their wierd

[IRCA] 960 CFFX

2008-01-14 Thread Walter Salmaniw
OK, I'm pretty certain that I just heard sweep tones and rather slow CW at
about 07:04:30, best heard on my "north" facing corner fed loopactually
aimed about 65degrees. When I switched to other antennae, I heard nothing, and
when I returned to the North loop, nothing. This antenna primarily hears
Calgary very strongly, although at times it fades to reveal another English
speaking station, possibly sports as well. I'd say that I heard perhaps 10
seconds of code and sweep tones, although there may have been more earlier. I
better call this a tentative until I check the mp3 files again. Thanks for all
involved! The ionosphere must be rather disturbed as Calgary completely faded
down for about 15 seconds revealing the other English speaker, and also a SS
station. Now Calgary is back. No further code or sweep tones,
thoughWalt in Victoria.

Not so far, but it might be there if I listen to the recording a bit
more. I wouldn't count on it though, as CFFX was pretty weak, and
there was a lot of other stations there. I hadn't realized that
the code and some sweeps were there under the KFLN s/off as well.

WERC pretty much owns the freq. They had Fox news
to 0005. Reloj from Cuba 15 to 25 dB below them. I think
Reloj was running their chimes every few seconds
during the first minute. No sign of anything else that was
a usable level. Reloj back to standard fmt after 0001.

Better luck on ham bands, worked V73NS on Kwajalein

[IRCA] 960 tonight

2008-01-14 Thread David Hochfelder
The CFFX test came in well with Morse ID's and sweeps just after
midnight; actual program content is tougher though, because it's right
on line with WELI here. I was rewarded with a newie while setting up
for the test, WTCH, Shawano, WI.

[IRCA] West Coast SRF-59 Hears Canada-960...Calgary

2008-01-14 Thread D1028Gary
Perhaps a little overenthusiastic at the recent Ultralight radio boom, a
razor-tuned SRF-59 optimistically tuned into an RF-packed 960 frequency on the
west coast...that sounded everything like a graveyard channel.

Just after EST, "The Fan" in Calgary attempted to hold the
frequency over a pesky SS station, while a couple of other minor players made
things
interesting by irritating these first two.

The chances of the SRF-59 hearing something from Ontario through this
hash are about the same as the Grayland Motel getting a 5-star rating... or
the SRF-59 winning the Tuning Convenience Award. I think I'll go back to the
SRF-59 service manual alignments...

[IRCA] CFFX-960 in Markham, ON

2008-01-14 Thread Mark
Saul

Using the SRF-59, I heard the CFFX test at midnight but under WFIR. Being
relatively new at this, I am surprised. CFFX (Kingston) is 226km/140mi from
my location and the test was conducted at 10 000W (as mentioned in the test
notice). WFIR in Roanoke, VA is 733km/456mi away and broadcasting at 5 000W
(as in the NRC's AM radio log). I would have expected the CFFX signal to be
the stronger of the two. By moving the radio, I could null CFFX but not
WFIR.

[IRCA] CFFX 960 DX Test

Heard (somewhat) easily from Southeastern Michigan,
distance approx. 375 miles, but had to null local WWJ
950's nighttime IBOC, and then WFIR suddenly popped up
after a long period of fading.

Glad I was able to hear them one last time, having
also logged them in Dec. 2002, Jan. 2004, & Sept.
2005.

My thanks to Jim Pogue and Saul Chernos for putting
this test together.

One more CFFX note that I neglected to add: as I was making the long
drive from Rochester downstate today, I checked out the CFFX signal one
last time on the way east from Rochester. It was coming in quite
listenably from just east of Rochester (out of the WROC 950 splash) to
just east of Syracuse (into WIBX 950 Utica's sidebands), with a bit of
WATS 960 Sayre PA mixing in. I've been listening to this one since it
was CKWS - it will be missed!

(this was on the stock VW Jetta radio, about 1500-1600 EST...)

[IRCA] SRF-59 gets Jamaica, St. Kitts, Mexico

2008-01-14 Thread Saul Chernos
..all within a few minutes, bareback on an unmodified SRF-59.

720 with unmistakeable jamaican accent, rather strong in WGN null, confirmed
on my regular sangean set-up.

555 St. Kitts quite strong on the sangean, I had a very wee trace of a
signal in between 550 and 560 on the ULR.

Might have had some country on 1140 for Alberta, definite Mexico City 1060.

And this thing ain't modified...

I still say the sangean set-up is better when push comes to shove than the
unmodified 59, but I have not had Jamaica in a year or two or three, and
caught this while spinning around on the 59 - withOUT the Radio Shack
signal-boosting loop!

I set up the R8A on CFFX before I left Rochester this afternoon. It was
a bit of a challenge, since I'm only 2 miles or so from my local 950,
WROC. Fortunately, they're a lightly-modulated kilowatt, so I could
knock them down pretty well.

I have a timer set on CFFX for tonight's test, and will be trying (at

Dan,

Sorry, it was WHA on 970 that I heard with clear ID at about 535est. I was
listening to the end of their state news...what caught my ear was mention of
"Superior" and listening in what they were talking about was something to do
with "UW-Superior", the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Then they went into
statewide weather and then the clear WHA ID...thrilling...I had been there some
years ago as part of my job and know right where their studios are. Not sure
why I said 1310...should have tried for WIBA right?

[IRCA] I KNOW I heard some Morse Code/Sweep Tones

2008-01-14 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Guys and guys...

Im fiddling around with my SRF-59 tonight to see what I can get.

Well, so far, the dominant station on 960 is WFIR Roanoke, Virginia. I
confirmed it via their website, as I was hearing Michael Savage (he has an
unmistakeable voice).. and WFIR's website confirms he's on.

Anyways, I tuned the SRF-59 dial a tad bit to the right... I wasn't quite on
960 anymore but I don't know if I was on 970 either as I didn't really hear
anything but a bunch of static. I know where my "marker" stations are, 870
WWL and 1020 KDKA.

I heard a few short and long bursts of morse code at 9:47pm.. then a pause
and a short burst of sweeptones
and another few short bursts of code at 9:50 pm then a few quick bursts at
9:52
I know it was NOT Radio Reloj as I VERY faintly heard the tick tick tick
elsewhere.. but this was unmistakebly the same kind of Morse Code and
Sweeptone type stuff the Broadcast Test Committee supplies to stations.

Was I hearing 960 CFFX< but because I was slightly off frequency, tuned to
the right of 960khz, only the sweep tones and code made it through.. or am I
off my rocker and losing my mind?

The statements about either the E1 or the E1XM still being sold belies the
fact that neither radio shows up in the 2008 Eton/'Grundig catalog of
receivers.

Oh well, those things happen. The relatively poor
conditions that evening/morning kept even the tones
from making it this far, anyway.

For anyone that's interested, CFFX is currently dominating 960 here in N.E.

test. Lots of "Lite 104.3--Kingston's Lite Rock" slogans.

Good luck to those who need this soon to be gone station. Another one from

2008-01-14 Thread Martin and Wendy Foltz
Dennis,

You are right, reference the IRCA Almanac second edition.

1630 had several stations:

VAF Alert Bay, BC (wx at 0905, 1020, 1420, 2320)
VAG Bull Harbour, BC (wx at 0845, 1040, 1440, 2345)
VAC Comox, BC (wx at 0935, 1220, 1540, 1835, 2335)
VAJ Prince Rupert, BC (wx at 0345, 0805, 1050, 1340, 1650, 2240)
VAH Sandspit, BC (wx at 0410, 0740, 1235, 1350, 1720, 0020)
VAE2 Spring Island, BC (wx at 0925, 1610, 0010)
VAE Tofino, BC (wx at 0835, 0945, 1450, 2250)
VAI Vancouver, BC (wx at 0815, 1110, 1410, 1810, 2310)
VAK Victoria, BC (wx at 0750, 0915, 1510, 1750, 2220)

So it looks like you heard VAK.

Re: [IRCA] More on the Eton E1

2008-01-14 Thread Mike Westfall, Lost Almost NM
We keep getting conflicting info here.

First we learned that all E1's were being discontinued.

Elsewhere we learned that E1XM was being retained and the
E1-without-XM was being discontinued because it would compete too
close in price to the Sat750 that's due out any day now.

And now it's the E1XM being axed and the XM-less version being kept/

Which is it?

I agree though, who needs XM on a DXing receiver?
XM is for people who like to listen to the content. :-) :-)

Whoa Nellie ... forget WROL ... make that WNTD Chicago...

http://www.relevantradio.com/NETCOMMUNITY/Page.aspx?&pid=469

Relevant Radio has begun broadcast operations on WNTD 950 AM -
Chicago. Effective immediately 950 AM will broadcast Relevant Radio
programming 5 am - 7 pm Monday through Friday. The process is in motion to
finalize a lease with an option to purchase 950 AM.

We were informed only just recently that the lease agreement with
Relevant Radio for WAIT 820 AM, set to expire at the end of November 2007,
will not be renewed. Therefore, we will no longer be broadcasting Relevant
Radio on 820 AM as of November 25, 2007.

We are grateful that Relevant Radio will still be able to serve the
Archdiocese of Chicago and the Diocese of Joliet. If you live in proximity
of Joliet or the western suburbs, you may be within reach of station
Relevant Radio 930 AM. We encourage you to try tuning in both 930 AM and 950
AM while at home and in your travels throughout the Chicago area.

Mostly Mexican style music. Candidates include NC and CT, and if TN is still

Anyone know if one of these stations is getting out well tonight, or other

[IRCA] CFFX 960 alert

2008-01-14 Thread Saul Chernos
In fact, CFFX is noted here on what seems most likely to be day pattern and
power. I know the test is automated. The engineer has an early morning to
prep for and do the 6 am EST shutdown. So this may last until 6 am. So while
I encourage any of you to try early, I'll be disappointed if you don't at
least give one or all three of the test periods a shot. So if you've never
logged CFFX, get thee to a radio asap. I will think particularly well of
those of you who log it on a Sony SRF59 or other UL radio. I am happy to
take any queries between now and through test time. If I don't answer, leave
a message.

[IRCA] DX TEST REMINDER - TONITE - CFFX 960

2008-01-14 Thread Saul Chernos
DX TEST -- 960 CFFX ON Kingston

TIME: Early morning of Tuesday January 15 (Monday night).

MODE OF OPERATION: CFFX will test using its 10,000-watt daytime directional
pattern.

PROGRAMMING: Regular adult contemporary programming. Special test material will
consists of three hourly voice announcements followed by special test
material lasting several minutes. These will air roughly at the top of the
hour, at approximately , 0100 and 0200 EST, give or take a few minutes
depending on the program log. Wouldn't surprise me if voice ancts are just
before the TOH.

CFFX is completing its move to 104.3 on the FM band this morning, and 960 is
scheduled to sign off for goood at 0600 EST. It also wouldn't surprise me if
they keep the same power and pattern until the very end. As part of the
transition, the AM has simulcast the FM for the past three months. This test
marks the final phase of the transition, and the test content will also air on
104.3. This is your last chance to log CFFX on 960, so for those of you who
tend to sleep through these things (you know who you are, heh, been there done
that) if it takes two alarm clocks to wake you, well, you've been warned!

I plan to be awake and DXing 960 (and other channels if cx warrant) through the
-0210 EST test period and am happy to take calls (not collect) at
705-454-9636.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for checking the 1977 SPEEDX utility Guide.
1630 was in the frequency slot on the log book and
the time was 1205 GMT. It looks like the letter "A"
written half way through the zero in the 1630. The radio
was a HQ-180 and above the1630 setting on the dial
is 3.2 MC. Maybe I was on 3.2 mc and wrote down
1630? One of History's Mystery's?

Checking my old 1977 SPEEDX utility Guide, I find Victoria Coastal Radio/VAK
in Sooke, BC, with a frequency of 2458 kHz. 1630 seems an unlikely frequency
for a coastal station so perhaps you did transcribe it wrong. Or was this
perhaps a time instead of freq? Another possibility might be 2630 kHz as
this is much closer to a marine band frequency.

Pacific Northwest Dxers,

Checking my log book from 11/01/80
I heard a station on 1630. Have it listed
as Victoria Coast station and it was
broadcasting a "Warning to Shippers".
Was this station on 1630 kHz, or did
I write down the wrong frequency?
Reception was from Albany, CA

Re: [IRCA] Police band radio on medium wave freqs

2008-01-14 Thread Russ Edmunds

Back before I really started seriously DX'ing I used to hear police
calls in what is now the X-band. IIRC 1640. This was from the Northern
NJ shore.

Above that I used to hear the Wilmington DE Marine Operator somewhere
around 1700 or so.

This would have been somewhere in between 1960 and 1962.

Vacationed for years at Balsams in Dixville Notch. Hotel didn't mind shot of
coil wire discretely hung from high room window, great sigs from all over,
daytime copy of WABC 770 & WQXR 1560.

KCA 999 on 156.09 well heard throughout NH while driving. This mighta been
what I heard from Providence, OCT '68, ca. 1800 KHz? If not them, another PD
identifying qth as NH. Didn't consider it remarkable at time, as lacked
knowledge on subject, also my Nova-Tech Pilot II tuning scale had 'police'
imprinted
in range, so figured set was working fine.

BC-200XLT w/telescopic whip or regular duck antler pulled NH SP Troop F Twin
Mountain, transmitting from Mt. Washington w/ease, along w/Troop E
Moultonboro, and several others, while up in Dixville Notch. Reportedly NH SP
has
switched to VHF Hi digital, after dismal foray into 800 megs which didn't quite
take
to mountainous terrain. Didn't quite see need to shift from lo-band, nor did
troopers I asked about it some years ago, during Troop F tour.

As w/many rural RI & CT PDs, NH SP did/does regular police work in rural
areas.

[IRCA] 2008 Ultralight Radio AM-DX Shootout... New Contenders Added!

2008-01-14 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

Thank you all for giving me more wonderful excuses to purchase new,
exciting Ultralight radio models!

The 2008 Ultralight Shootout was forced to recruit two additional
contenders because of the unfortunate arrival of a very poor-performing
C.Crane
SWP model, which forces us to prepare for the contingency that its pedestrian
performance is typical of the design, and not worthy of a spot in the highly
competitive Shootout.

Accordingly, please be advised that the Sony SRF-S84 AM-FM analog
receiver ($99 from Wall Street Photo via Amazon), and the Sangean DT-220V
digital
model ($47.76 from Dependable Resource via Amazon) will be fully available
for participation in the 2008 Shootout, assuming that they do not also arrive
in a Turkey status.

The 2008 Shootout is already acquiring an extensive dossier of QC
problems with certain models, and in the interest of full disclosure to all
Ultralight Radio fanatics, this will receive due attention in the Shootout
"Hall of
Shame." However, please be advised that the vast majority of Ultralight
radios are dependable, thrilling, innovative and emancipating little DX
wonders
that are the perfect cure for winter boredom. Get one today, and find out
why even experienced DXers are acting like totally transformed fanatics!

73 and Best Wishes to All,

 Gary DeBock

It's really too bad the M37 series has issues with strong signals, as
it'd be nice to have a longwave-capable Ultralight.
