Re: [IRCA] KOHI to 1700??

2008-02-17 Thread Patrick Martin
The OM at KAST said the time ran out and they decided not to build it.
But as far as I know the FCC has not given it to anyone else. Lots of
issues running 10 KW from the KAST site, as the CG air station is a mile
away, the High School, and other things too. I don't think New NW BCers
really wanted to deal with the cost of moving it either. Plus the CP for
the FM had priority.

Re: [IRCA] KOHI to 1700??

2008-02-17 Thread Mike McKenna
The only reason KAST did not move to 1700 is -- that they would have to give up
1370, and like alot of the others -- felt that no one would listen to them,
once they moved to the upper band. First the FCC proposed as many as 125
stations, then after protests and court review, it was down to about 90. 84
were given allotments in the new band. Only some 50 stations were built.
Like KAST, most just felt it was to great a risk to move to the top and not be
able to keep 100 % of the listeners. The USCG had np problems with 1700
running 10 KW. And the new FM did get priority over a move to 1700 Khz.

Hello Allen,

Thank you for your very kind words, but at least from my viewpoint, I
should be thanking YOU (and Robert Ross, of course) for showing everybody in
North America, and the world, what kind of DX these Ultralight radios are
capable of receiving.

Just at the time when the Shootout articles, alignments, administration
and other duties kept me from doing much Ultralight DXing myself--- you,
Rob and many others stepped up to the challenge and absolutely thrilled all of
us (not only Ultralight DXers, but others in the AM-DX community) with your
fantastic loggings.

Yesterday at the enjoyable meeting of AM-DXers at Bruce Portzer's fine
home in Seattle, Washington, I was discussing with Nick Hall-Patch how the
Canadians have really done the major share of Ultralight DXing until now, and
how much we depend on Colin Newell's outstanding dxer.ca web site. Ultralight
DXing would really be ultra-light without the Canadian contribution, and I
am proud and happy to wear the Team Canada cap and T-shirt from Rob Ross,
who has generously proclaimed me the leader of the Canadian Lazyboy DX
Team, hi. Thanks again for all your fantastic DX contributions, Allen.

Wellyou know Allenthere's a whole squad of ULR Geeks who have
brought this Subculture to the forefront of AM DX'ing...I came in
somewhere near the Middle.it was already well established BEFORE I even
knew what a ULR was!! Of course Gary is the one who is responsible for
bringing me into the cult..I knew I should never have drank that
blasted Purple Kool Aid!!!

I know that the combined efforts of all the people you mentioned..and a few
more as wellhave helped to introduce this phase of listening to a pile
of New ULR Usersbut...there are still a lot of people who think we are
a little goofyand may very well NEVER obtain or use a ULR!! Some simply
believe that what they are using now is superior.(which it very well
may be)..and they aren't going to be bothered with goofing around with
a Pocket Radio and an Analog Dial. That's cool too...'cause there's lots of
room in the hobby to accommodate both beliefs. One thing I do say to those
that don't want ...or need to try out an Ultralight Radio...even if you
don't end up using the ULR as your main DX rigyou will be AMAZED at
what they will do under certain conditions..and I assure you that you
WILL hear NEW STATIONS if you use the ULRI don't care how many stations
you have in the log..if you use a ULRyour log will grow!!

So..Give it try guys...the Cost of participating is so ridiculously
low.you have nothing to loseand only something to gain by trying it
out!! Even if you hear something Exotic on the Ultralightbut it's
coming in better on the DRAKE or other Fancy Receiver, with a 1,000 foot
beverage.you have to sit and stare at the ULR and wonder how the heck
that single AA Battery is even hearing the station in the first place.
Hearing a New Station is always exciting..but hearing it on a radio
smaller than a deck of Cards.gives me Goosebumps!!

That's one ULR User's opinionYour milage may vary .better or worse!!

Have fun and good DX to ULR Users and Non ULR Users alike ...as long as
you're hearin' 'emthat's what counts!

Re: [IRCA] KOHI to 1700??

2008-02-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Mike,

As far as KAST goes, I am just repeating what their OM told me. There
was concern over 10 KW from the KAST site. As they were looking at 5 KW
there many years ago and were told, they may have to move. The CG was a
concern, enviormentalists in this day and all, the towers on the Bay,
New ground system, etc. The FM had Priority and New NW BCers had just
so much money to spend. But you are right that some stations did not
want to chance the frequency move. After all KAST has been on 1370 since
the 30s and they are the number one AM rated station in the county and
has been forever. From a personal standpoint, I am glad they did let
1700 go as I did not look forward to a 10 KWer 5 miles away Their 1 KWer
on 1370 is not strong here and DXwise it fits me fine. Plus the plan was
to keep both frequencies (somehow) and continue to run News Talk on
1370 and Sports on 1700. Mike, do you think the FCC will reopen X Band
apps and give stations a second shot?

 After all KAST

And day coverage would be very similar. Night coverage
would be a crap shoot, better in areas the DA did not
cover and well similar in the DA lobe but maybe NOT.

The rule WAS to give up the X band allocation after 5
years or the original allocation. A few have not done
that, a lot have.

Being in radio for around 40 years and have had the
highest FCC commercial license [once useful for
broadcast radio ] since the late 70's ( and that now
means NOTHING...just paper that can burn up in a
fire ... I know..) .welll ah as I said earlier
before I read the earlier stuff and wasn't even in my
mind when Pat posted . I would exect the FCC is
not going to re open the X band in the near future or
even distant future. And the FCC is worrying about
more important thing.

[IRCA] New logging

2008-02-17 Thread David Faulkner
A Blessed Sunday to you all:

I was sitting in the car this morning waiting for my wife and listening to
1590 kHz. At 10 a.m. I logged the following new station.

1590 WTRW WITwo Rivers on top w/beautiful signal, WTRW, Two
Rivers-Manitowoc, AM 1590 ID, into CNN nx, a real surprise. (Oh yeah,
2/17/08, 1000)

My wife came out, we drove to Athens, and I preached at First Presbyterian
Church there. I used to think that if I ever preached there and told them
what I really believed they would kick me clear back to Albany (they being
quite liberal). But they are very nice, polite folks. All went very well.

--- Patrick Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Paul,

True, the FCC is not oking any new CPs for the X
Band. It was just a comment.

But Patrick, your comment makes you look not er um
up to date and with it I couldn't think of the
right word.

And well, the FCC IF they EVER open the expanded band
will be years if not decades, and maybe not ever. The
quick fix would be would be for 1700 to have been
built and sold to have KOHI take that frequency and
then delete 1600. It didn't happen and won't.

KOHI has always had an issue with QRM, but
 since the tower
move, their signal is weaker so the QRM is worse,
 plus Blaine WA is now
on 1600. KOHI has always suffered from QRM from
 Eugene, even going back
to the late 60s under KASH and they were Top 40
 rock. KOHI should have
applied back in the 90s for an X Band channel, as
 they fit the app very
 well.

That by no means would have gotten them the frequency.
Not even close unfortunately.

KAST Astoria applied for 1700 (KCHT) and got
 it, but decided not
to build. They used the money to put on a new FM
 instead, so they let
1700 go. KOHI would have been great there as the
nearest station on there is Tecate, Mexico.

That doesn't mean as much as the lower frequencies.
That far up the band 1700 has a lot of shortwave
characteristics. Even as low as 1560 there's ALWAYS
skip (albeit very high angle) during the daytime.
That's more pronounced at 1700. And at night the
skywave certainly is a major problem for listeners in
the close in local area for the listeners. The 1630
in Augusta, GA on the VERY best nights when the skip
is low is 15 miles. On nights when skip smokin' and
the A and K index is low. maybe UP TO 10 miles at
THE very best. 10,000 watts at 1700 and 250 watts on
540.well give me the 540 any day!

And that boring religious canned talk KOHI runs, in my
opinion IS NOT serving the local area. It's not local.
Just BORING.very B O R I N G religious talk that
has NO local content. That's the cheap and dirty way
to run things.

[IRCA] Fwd: [mwc] JAPAN news

2008-02-17 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
From Steve Whitt on the Medium Wave Circle list:

American Forces Network's Surf 648-AM will be back on the air Feb. 18
after being off the air for about a year.
The AM station will restore news, talk and sports-talk programming to
the AFN airwaves on Okinawa and will offer an alternative to FM
radio's music-based format.
The new AM program lineup will feature popular programming such as
National Public Radio, political talk shows and sports shows, such as
Sports Overnight America, according to Master Sgt. Grady Fontana, AFN
Okinawa detachment chief.
The biggest benefit is that listeners now have more options,
Fontana said. If they want music, they can tune into Wave 89-FM. If
they want news and talk, then they can catch it on Surf 648-AM.
AFN's new AM antenna is in the final stages of testing, and, pending
any delays due to bad weather, will launch Feb. 18 at 6 a.m. with NPR.
The AM antenna, located at Camp Kinser, was damaged during routine
maintenance in January 2007.
For full AM and FM schedules, log on to http://myafn.net and follow
the links to affiliates. Select radio and Japan from the drop-down
menu. From there, select Kadena, Okinawa.

2008-02-17 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
It simply won't happen guys this discussion of KOHI over and over again
is getting tiring.. as it's the same stuff mentioned EVERYTIME.

And yes, I know I have the delete button on my keyboard.. I've already worn
it out.

The rule WAS to give up the X band allocation after 5
years or the original allocation. A few have not done
 that, a lot have.

Being in radio for around 40 years and have had the
highest FCC commercial license [once useful for

not going to re open the X band in the near future or
even distant future. And the FCC is worrying about
 more important thing.

[IRCA] IBOC push

2008-02-17 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
I noticed that Ibiquity is mailing postcards to radio broadcasters
encouraging them to upgrade now before the license fees increase on
July 1, 2008. The card mentions that there are now over 50 HD Radio
receiver models available with prices starting at $99. It also says
there are presently over 1,500 HD radio stations and over 700 multicast
channels. In a cruel twist of fate the postcard sent to our Denver

Re: [IRCA] KOHI to move antenna

2008-02-17 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
That's exactly what I said Powell. Accent Radio Network is boring and
uninteresting.. the network is only on stations in 3 cases:

A.) Stations that are owned by the network
2.) Stations Owned by friends
3.) Stations they pay for the time on.

No station I know of has ever willingly taken that gow awful dreck for
progrmaming and put it on their station for free unless they fell into those
3 catergories. I know I didn't.

And you're right, their ARN and USA programming in no way serves the local
community.

Oh wait, they do serve the local community when they run high power on Friday
nights to do sports. It's so obvious they do run high power, as Dennis posts
when he hears it.. but because everyone is obsesed with KOHI and loves the
station, it's OK for them to run high power... but the minute a spanish
station runs higher power.. it's NOT ok.

[IRCA] Sony AM/FM IC papers

2008-02-17 Thread Bruce Portzer

I just saw this link posted on the Sony 2010 discussion group a few
minutes ago

http://staff.washington.edu/paymana/radio/sony.zip

The file is a collection of papers written by Sony Engineers on various
consumer receiver IC's. At least one of them looks a lot like the
CXA1129N used in the SRF-59 etc. If it is, it has the complete pin
diagram and internal block diagram.

I've briefly perused a couple of the files and they look fascinating.

Re: [IRCA] Sony AM/FM IC papers

2008-02-17 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Bruce,

Thanks for the info, and also for the very warm welcome yesterday by
your family to a diverse group of AM-DX enthusiasts (and also my 8-year old
son, who greatly appreciated the coloring material provided by your wife).

The provider of the link containing the Sony AM-FM IC papers, Payman
Arabshahi, is a physics professor at UW, and is also one of the biggest
Ultralight radio supporters. He notified us directly about this link over a
month
ago, and Nick, Steve Ratzlaff and I have been reading these interesting files
for some time. Because the link contains copyrighted I.E.E.E. documents,
however, we never publicized its existence on this list.
Payman is a great Ultralight radio supporter, and I met him last summer,
when I performed an ICF-S5W alignment for him here in Puyallup. Since then,
he
has been most helpful in tracking down any documentation we need.

[IRCA] Subjects that are DX Worthy

2008-02-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Paul,

For the record, there are a lot of discussions that are not of interest
to me. That is what the delete key is for. You can also streamline your
e mail programs to not allow certain subjects to show up in your e
mails. The discussion of KOHI or KAST fits this list exactly. I
appreciate DXers like Mike, Powell, Craig, Scott, and others that have a
lot for information on the FCC, that most of the rest of us do not have.

Re: [IRCA] KAST to 1700

2008-02-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Powell Mike,

Thanks for the info. Good! I am happy that 1700 would probably not
become a reality. 1570 was a CP for 50/1 KW for Warrenton, but the tx
site was going to be next to KAST and one tower would be used. That CP
never went anywhere either. The station was basically going to be a
relay for KPAM-860-Portland. Pamphin wanted a NW Network for his talk
shows. I think they even wanted a 50 KWer in the Puget Sound on 740. I
am glad none of that came to be either. I hope it never does.
On a side note, there is a CP for Raymond WA for 1350 with 5/.5 KW. I
wonder if that will be built?
1340 KAPA couldn't make it after KSWW-97.7 came on and now the 1340 is
in Tumwater run by KUOW.

[IRCA] OT: #5000 Received

2008-02-17 Thread Konnie Rychalsky

One must appreciate what the moderators have to do to keep this site moving
smoothly, and focused. One should appreciate the volumn of posts that are
processed and handled, or the computer space needed and maintenanced.

Having said that, #5000 has been received - not QSLs, but posts that have gone
unopened and unread, due to limited time and more Important Life issues to
attend to, since logging back in in September. When I have an evening open,
I'll check in to view what anyone is hearing on the East Coast, which isn't too
often. I learned my lesson last year not to expect much; thanks Mark and a few
others. If nothing there I move on... tomorrow it's old news anyway.

It seems that unimportant chatter (UltraLight radios are the craze) and
unecessary back and forth volley are flooding these pages. When the time comes
in a few months, I'll click the dump flush button/handle, hello. I've read
about 1000 postings since.

You cannot help but wonder, and ponder, at about 5 seconds each, the average
time to open, read, and disposition... that's equals 30,000 seconds, or 500
minutes, or 8+ hours... and that's on a good day.

A tip o the hat to the moderators - Thanks folks for keeping this page moving
thru the pipes.

Re: [IRCA] KOHI to move antenna

2008-02-17 Thread Patrick Martin
KOHI used to have a Good CW local sound. Not canned. When Forrie
Smith owned it, the station was local. Forrie worked on the air there
for years. I think he still has or had? a program recently. He sold the
station (Volcano Broadcasting) as he was burned out. Forrie is probably
50ish now. But canned talk from a nothing network will not bring in
the listeners. It was always a fight to keep listeners anyway, being so
close to Portland. That was the big advantage of being local. Without
that, then why even listen to KOHI, when Portland stations are 25 miles
away? But of course is is less expensive to run canned stuff.

Re: [IRCA] KOHI to move antenna

2008-02-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Powell,

The reason I made the X Band comment about KOHI, is I have no idea
what the FCC might or might not do. Not having a direct connection with
broadcasting any longer, I had no clue. That is why people like myself
depend on your insight. Since many decided not to build their X Band
station, the FCC did not meet their quota per se, so I fiqured they
may reopen the window to try and get more stations to move. With no one
in the West on 1700, it is wide open, except in So Cal with Tecate,
Mexico.

Re: [IRCA] ULTRALIGHT DX Equipment......NOT!!! AHHAHAH....

2008-02-17 Thread Saul Chernos
Pro-Ultralight Radio Agit-Prop is dangerously Heavy Handed on these lists,
which are probably bought and paid for by Sony Corpse. Watch the
underwriters, follow the money. The fact that you weigh in on the topic with
such light tone leads to suspicion of undue influence and pressure, perhaps
visited by heavyweights from this list. Perhaps you've been bought and
you're now one of THEM. Not sure you can be trusted, but a warning to anyone
who will listen: Watch those Canadians. What they say cannot be trusted. Do
not take them lightly. Talk is all ultralight but words fall like a lead
balloon. A further warning: Soviet-technology Prison Radios were used for
communication by Putin Operatives carrying very heavy doses of Polonium 210
during secret visits to Westminster and Environs. They were not intending to
DX Trans-Atlantics, contrary to popular Communist-inspired mythology. Be
warned, this is most insidious.

I like R-390s and R-388s. They are heavy.

Yet am delighted with srf-59. Cleared purchase w/accountants, found one,
 K-Mart, Port Charlotte, FL.

Keeps up w/sony 2010 w/o SYNC DET as others note. Antenna yields sharp
 nulls.

'59 is light. Others are not.

Hi Konnie
Hi Konnie

I live in the Toronto area and consider myself to be in the east. My
experiences have been the opposite of yours.

When there are tests (some of which occur in the east) there is a lot of
traffic on this list. People reporting what they're hearing or not hearing.

I'm saddened that you write off Ultralight radios as unimportant chatter.
DXing is DXing regardless of the equipment. Rob Ross in London ON has become
an avid ultralight DXer and has an impressive list of catches. Not only does
he report what he's heard, but when there are openings he's quick to report
them as they're happening. I've been able to make use of his tips.

It's unfortunate that the times when you've been able to check the list mail
didn't correspond to activity in the east.

I've found the list messages to be quite helpful.
