I'm surprised too. I've heard Taiwan there a few times this season, but
never all that well, so I'm a bit surprised by the strong signals you,
John, et al have been reporting. For whatever reason, the Korean is
more common for me.

The same weird situation occurs frequently when I compare my TP loggings

strong TP's that I don't have a trace of, and vice versa.

[IRCA] TPs from Orcas, Sept 27

2009-09-27 Thread John H. Bryant

Like Colin said, hum-drum.

Lotsa mid-season Asian signals, but all were the usuals and most were
down a bit from recent peaks. 909 presumed Tianjin was doing better
than usual (which is poorly) putting in a moderate signal and 918
next door was positively ROCKIN' with the Shangdong echo. Otherwise,
I feel guilty about it, but things really were hum drum.

As is so often the case, my observations don't sync with Colin's. I monitored
between 13:27 and 14:30 and thought that the usual stations were in quite well,
and the DU stations performed better than they did yesterday AM. I started
today at 1701 and worked down for a change. Here are my results in the usual
format with 6 unless otherwise noted:

558: Music noted at 8 level
567: 9 level NHK1 at 14:01. Definitely a real improvement over previous
years. Often as strong or stronger than 594.
576: Australia at 7 level at 14:00
585
594: 9 level JJ but also coch Australia at 14:03
612: 9 level at 14:03 Brisban e
621: 9 level ABC National Melbourne with news at 14:04 // to 612. Earlier at
7 level ??CC or KK. Noted a het from 620.935
639: CNR1 very strong at 13:56. Later Fiji at low modulation 7 level at 14:06
675: Vietnam at 8 level 13:55
738: WHAT HAPPENED TO TAHITI? It's been a while since I've heard them here.
They were at armchair level a few weeks back, but no more. Instead there was
CC early, and
Australia at 14:08 at 8 level.
747: underperforming NHK2 today at 7 level
774: 9 level NHK2 and a DU at 13:53. DU alone at 14:08 at 8 level
783: 7
792: 7
801: 6 plus WOBBLY CARRIER. Is anyone else seeing this on the low side again
today at 14:09?
819: North Korea. 9 level //2850 with perfect modulation and rock-solid. Not
at all like their other transmitters!
828: 9 level NHK2
837
846: 7 level at 13:49
855, 873, 918, 927
936: 7 level
945
954: 7 level, best on my S wire at 14:11
963: CC mostly today at 8 level.
972: 9+ level KK very strong, but with weak cochannel.
1008: 7 level growly sounding. ?jamming or het? Pop music at 13:46
1017: NHK2 at 8 level and cochannel ?CRI KK
1026: Pretty sure this was Sonshine Radio at 7 level with what sounded like a
call-in show at 13:44
1053: 7 level jammer at 13:42
1134: 8 level but with serious splatter
1143, 1161, 1188
1251: 7 level with same 3 transmitters producing quite a messy buzz
1278: talk at 7 level
1287: JJ at 8 level 13:37
1305, 1314, 1323, 1332
1377: 7 level CNR1 at 13:33
1386, 1395, 1422, 1503, 1512
1566: HLAZ at 8 level
1575: VOA very strong 9 level 13:27
1593: CC at 7 level
X-band: absent

There you have it. Not the best morning, but not a bad one either, and a

Re: [IRCA] Cheap wire - sources

2009-09-27 Thread Craig Healy
What are the best U.S. stores, chain or otherwise, to get cheap,
good wire in spools of at least 1000 feet?

I generally get a current price at Home Depot or Lowes and then look on
eBay. I've bought close to a couple thousand feet of #12 or #14 THHX
stranded wire for a better price, even including shipping. Probably could
find vendors in Canada so the over the border fees/time don't happen.

At one point a year ot so ago there was a 3,000'+ (900m+) spool of yellow
#14 wire. It was probably half the cost per foot of what Home Depot
charged. Didn't need it, so I let it go. Coulda-shoulda bought it.

FWIW, Home Depot sells an inexpensive good sized orange plastic reel that
takes over 1,000' (300m+) of #14 wire. Makes it much easier to use a BOG.

Re: [IRCA] [am] BOG on the web (read this one first)

2009-09-27 Thread Russ Edmunds

You BOG directivity will be increased by two things - a) going somewhat longer
- 700-800' total, and b) using some sort of termination at one end or the
other. At the length you used, unterminated, it's more like a basic longwire,
especially given your location where there's less than optimal ground
conductivity.

For portable use, I'd suggest terminating by way of a detachable 'fan' or 3 or
4 lengths of wire, each 20-30' long to be laid out at the end. Experimentation
with using a resistor between the BOG and the fan would be helpful as well.
Making it detachable allows you to switch ends to switch direction.

There was no internet access, or I would've posted this tip real-time;

Denmark-1062 came in at amazing levels the last two nights. They are currently
signing on at 0340 (one hour earlier than listed in the EMWG Guide) with

[IRCA] Neat piece of BCB History picked up today.................

2009-09-27 Thread Robert S.Ross VA3SW

Hi Guys:

Today I attended the London, ONTARIO HAMFEST for umpteenth time...and I
came home with something pretty cool...or at least I think so. One of my
Old Local Stations..CHLO 1570..who went off the air a few years
back...was located just a little south of London in ST. THOMAS, ONTARIO.
I used to listen to this station when I was a kid growing up. Many years
ago I obtained a Souvenir Drinking Glass from my Grandmother that was
inscripted with CHLO's Logo and showed them as being on 680 Khz and
serving London/St.Thomas. Apparently the LO in CHLO stood for LONDON.
They later swapped frequencies with CFTR Toronto.Anyways...I have
kept that glass for many years...and have it on Display in my Radio Shack.

Today I picked up another piece of CHLO Memorabilia! To make a long
story longera friend of mine just happened to be driving by the
CHLO Transmitter Site the day they were dismantling everything and
taking down the tower when they signed off the air. He asked the guys
who were taking the tower down if he could have a souvenir to remember
the Station by. Turns out they gave him something which he kept for a
few yearsthen passed it along to another friend of ours...who kept
it for a few years...and today I obtained that souvenir of CHLO from him!!

What I picked up was a set of 2 of the RED BLINKING LIGHTS from the top
of the CHLO Tower They are housed in a Heavy Cast Iron Case that is
painted Orange. The Entire unit must weight about 10 Pounds or so!!
So...I'm gonna clean them up.and maybe repaint the Orange
Casing...as it's a little worn..and then display them in my Radio
Room alongside the CHLO 680 Drinking Glass!!

Pretty amazing what shows up at a Hamfest sometimes!! And to think it
was 2 Good friends of mine that previously owned these Lights...and I
never knew either had them!!

About 15 years ago at the same Hamfest I picked up 2 SHURE 55S ELVIS
Chrome Mics that had come from the Studios of CFPL 980 London!!

Cool stuff is still out there waiting to be found!!!

Re: [IRCA] BOG (Beverage On the Ground) test today: mixed results (w/log)

2009-09-27 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
At 05:03 9/27/2009, you wrote:
I tried out a BOG (Beverage On the Ground) on the MW BCB band for the
first time today. Here are some of the details and results.

The nuts and bolts: I used my Yaesu FT-897D, and a 500' spool of
stranded 14 gauge green ground wire purchased (for $25) from Lowe's.
I simply stripped the insulation from about an inch of one end of the
wire, folded the stripped section in half, and inserted it into the center
conductor hole in the SO-239.

Hi Jim,

I suspect your BOG signal strengths and perhaps directivity might have
benefited from using a matching transformer and perhaps a separate ground for
the antenna from the receiver ground.

There are a number of references available, for example:

http://www.seed-solutions.com/gregordy/Amateur%20Radio/Experimentation/Beverage.htm
(look at the Basic Beverage Antenna schematic as it shows the concept of
using a separate ground; termination is optional)

http://www.isp.ca/ve3nh/rxant.htm (although I wonder about the -61 material
recommended here)

http://n1eu.com/topband/BeverageXfmrs.htm

and the detailed information on building them at
http://www.dxing.info/equipment/

Commercial versions are available also, usually at premium prices.

You didn't seem to have noise problems at that site, which a transformer and
separate ground would be most useful in mitigating, but it would be
interesting to see whether signal strengths and directivity also improve.

best wishes,

Nick

on an hour earlier than listed in EMWG since it is daylight savings time in

Just returned from a DXpedition with Jim Pogue and Brandon Jordan to Joe
Wheeler State Park, Russellville, AL.

There was no internet access, or I would've posted this tip real-time;

Denmark-1062 came in at amazing levels the last two nights. They are
currently signing on at 0340 (one hour earlier than listed in the EMWG
Guide) with Interval Signal and IDs 'til start of programming at 0345.

With the A and K indices still at the same levels as last night, it's
possible they would be well-heard again tonight.

[IRCA] N. Alabama DXpedition - Sep 26-27 - superb TA conditions

2009-09-27 Thread Brandon Jordan
Jim Pogue, JD Stephens and I went on a DXpedition to Joe Wheeler State
Park in Northern Alabama over the weekend. We employed a Super KAZ loop
antenna bearing 40 degrees and enjoyed the best inland TA session that
any of us can recall. Northwestern Alabama is not what one would
consider a prime TA DX hotspot by any means, but the combination of the
outstanding Super KAZ loop and the excellent conditions really created a
'perfect storm' of TA DX fun.

The first night, although compromised due to local storm fronts, yielded
many great logs in difficult circumstances. Last night (Sep 27 UT) was
simply fantastic. Algeria, Denmark, Germany, France, Spain, England,
Morocco and many other countries logged on MW and LW. I have two nights
of Perseus drift net recordings to start digging through, and will post
logs over the next weeks both here and on DXWW East.

It really was a joy, not to mention a big surprise, hearing DR P5
Kalundborg, Denmark on 1062 kHz signing on with a great signal and that
awesome IS!

Re: [IRCA] Cheap wire - sources

2009-09-27 Thread Walter Salmaniw
For Canadians that happen to live close to any Crown Asset auctions, keep your
eyes open. When they used to have them in Victoria monthly, I purchased a
pallet load of various wire, including a least a mile of the really heavy duty
white Teflon coated multistranded wire that's virtually indestructable and
plenty of coax for about $30. Years later, I'm still using that original
source for my DXing needs.

Re: [IRCA] BOG (Beverage On the Ground) test today: mixed results (w/log)

2009-09-27 Thread Neil Kazaross
Since I have been using BOGs since 2001, I will reply with some of my
experiences with them here and on the other msg lists where Jim posted his
test results from yesterday.

I do realize that my experiences with them are different than what lots of
users experience. ..ie from my experiences they work lots better than what
some others have experienced and are more directive than what some others
have experienced.

I also realize that I am risking being burned at the stake for sacrilege for
some of what I will say in various replies about BOGs over the next couple
of days...but I'll risk it.

First of all, what concerns me about Jim's test is that when he put his hand
on his rx, signal levels jumped greatly. I have been using BOGs mostly DXing
out of a car or a truck and have never experienced that. My BOGs pass under
the truck door and then go to the quantum phaser on the passenger's seat. If
I am using the R8A or B I put the phaser on top of the rx on that seat. If
the BOGs enter from the driver's side they pass under my legs. In a few
minutes I will end this post and head out to DX and I am using the E-1 today
as it is easy to use and I just put it in my lap and prop it up against the
steering wheel. Once again..I experience no signal changes due to holding
the rx. Perhaps there's something different about Jim's rx..one which I am
not familiar with. Jim may want to ground his rx to his car chassis although
when I tried that with the R8A it didn't matter.

Jim was DXing in a park It is not practical to put in ground rods in a
public park nor are transformers necessary for this sort of quicky DXped.
I've compared transformers to direct hook up here and directivity is the
same. I did get just a bit more signal..from the transformer..but the dB or
two gain due VSWR improvement from transforming about 250 ohms to 50 isn't
going to get you any better domestic DX at night.

As for Jim noticing those DFW stations of the side of the antenna I cannot
say why, but it would useful to compare to a BOG aimed south right at DFW
from OKC. I will say that skip can start early and especially on the high
end..ie his 1600 Asian format.. from DFW.

Phasing two that are parallel and of different lengths so that you don't
phase cancel everything turns even short BOGs into a world class antenna
system. Right now I have about 325 ft // 195 ft aimed about 320 degrees. I
did a quick test at 5:15 which is two hours prior to Fargo sunset. I phase
nulled Chicago 1200 but there was no KFNW yet. However, and without
retweaking the phaser when I tuned up to 1660 Fargo was dominant and with no
tweak of phase or amplitude. Reducing the phasing or switching to a single
wire had Fargo lost into a clearly stronger mix of the Palatine TIS and the
Michigan stn on 1660. Phased BOGs work MUCH MUCH better than a single one
here in the RF jungle that is the mdwest. The back end null tends to be nice
and remains good over at least a +/- 45 degree angle from he direct back
end.

I'll close by stating that my experiences are with BOGs on nicely cut
grass...ie cut like a lawn or a football field or across dirt or much up my
driveways..ie ON THE GROUND..rather than across foot high grasses and
undergrowth in forests etc.

At these lengths, directivity is greater on the high end.

73 KAZ Barrington IL..but it will soon seem like I am DXing in MN on that
direction Phased BOG System

I tried out a BOG (Beverage On the Ground) on the MW BCB band for the

The nuts and bolts: I used my Yaesu FT-897D, and a 500' spool of
stranded 14 gauge green ground wire purchased (for $25) from Lowe's.
I simply stripped the insulation from about an inch of one end of the
wire, folded the stripped section in half, and inserted it into the center
conductor hole in the SO-239.

Hi Jim,

I suspect your BOG signal strengths and perhaps directivity might have
benefited from using a matching transformer and perhaps a separate ground
for the antenna from the receiver ground.

There are a number of references available, for example:

(look at the Basic Beverage Antenna schematic as it shows the concept of
using a separate ground; termination is optional)

material recommended here)

Dear J.D.,

Interval Signal and IDs 'til start of programming at 0345.

There is a reason why you heard Denmark one hour earlier than in the
EMWG. The EMWG gives UTC time during winter time. When summer time is in
order, you need to subtract one hour from the times mentioned in the
EMWG, if and when the station in question is located in a country where
summer time is running.

This is explained in the EMWG introduction.

Kind regards,

Excellent reply, Neil.I was worried that no-one was going to reply to Jim,
and so figured that an inexpert reply would bring out the experts, hi.

I will add that when I've compared BOGs to raised wires (this was 25 years ago,
mind), I recall that they did not have as good side nulls as the raised wires.
