[IRCA] TA signs

2009-10-17 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
at 0045, there's quite a few TA carriers here in Victoria, mostly weak but
audible with the BFO on, maybe about half the channels. Best ones so far are
864, 1134, 1215, 1269, and 1422.

and I'm going out this evening, hi.

Nick

Hi,

I have published a report on the recent LEM278 DXpedition to Lemmenjoki in
Finland's Arctic North. Lots of reindeer, but even more radio stations.
Conditions on the AM band were pretty good, with many interesting catches
especially from the Americas. Check out the details at
http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/lem278rep.dx - a log will follow some time
next year, as listening with Perseus takes time.

It's always fun to see DXpeditions from other locations, Mika, and interesting
to see that Bangladesh-693 was being heard in Lapland at a similar time to
Bruce and Chuck logging it at Grayland the following day.

It was also interesting to hear that conditions there were good but not
spectacular, as Grayland on the 3rd and 4th was pretty outstanding.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have not been regulars from there, and TA's are also
the exception! (you may remember from your own visit to Grayland, though of
course that was before the long solar minimum)

best wishes,

Nick

2009-10-17 Thread Nigel Pimblett
I'd concur with Colin, an uninspiring morning. In fact, when I first
tuned in it was downright dreadful, however it recovered enough to be
uprated.
I also noted the Japanese big guns to be well down from yesterday.
For some reason what seemed to be a Chinese station playiing a lengthy
vocal by a woman was doing quite well at 1330, but that was about the
only unusual reception noted. Other more regular Chinese catches, such
as 945, 1044, 1206 were either feeble or missing entirely.

[IRCA] TP for 17 Oct from Victoria, BC

2009-10-17 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Well, definitely a step down from yesterday. Started listening at 1350UT, and
although things became more readable around 1415 (splatter fading down plus
some real signal strength increase), the sheer volume of channels with signals
was down, as was overall strength, and nothing too unusual was heard. One
thing of interest is that at 1618UT, there was still weak audio on 1287, so
winter is coming. (local sunrise is 1435UT)

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly):

279 R. Rosii
594 JOAK
747 JOIB but not until 1420UT
774 JOUB
828 JOBB but only briefly, usually at a lower level this morning
1287 JOHR, actually not really strong, but quite clear, 1436UT
1575 VoA

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash
or noise):

567 JOIK //594 at 1406
603 HLSA seemed// 558 but it was the weaker station; the other had music, so
no idea
666 JOBK //594, had a couple of pretty good peaks
675 Vietnam //weaker 5975 at 1415
702 hum , N. Korea //2850, NHK2 under
738 mx at 1435UT
945 CNR-1 at 1427
954 JOKR w/JJ talk at 1439
972 HLCA, big carrier

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

153//189 R. Rossii
531 JOQG//594
558 usual mix JJ/KK
639 CNR1, 2 or 3 second delay from 5030
657 hum and N. Korea
936 CC
846 //594 at 1423, so NHK1 synchros, but trading places w/possible KBS station
as well, so tough copy
1161 at 1410, but mx, so no hope of ID
1269 briefly at this level, and seemed //1287, but quickly gone, so not quite a
logging
1377 CNR1
1503 JOUK //594
1512 sounded like CC talk at 1419UT
1566 HLAZ presumed w/big carrier

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

765
837 CC?
855 mostly hum
873 w/hum, so N. Korea in there somewhere
891 pretty sure this talk was //594 at 1430UT, if so, JOHK. A great catch 9
kHz from local CKMO-900
1008
1098 (Asiatic bearing)
1143 CC?
1215 CC?
1386 maybe a CC / JJ mix?

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

1251

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Victoria TP's for 10/17/09 First Flush

2009-10-17 Thread John H. Bryant
Well, I'm somewhat glad to hear of the pedestrian conditions. I went
out yesterday in the rain to re-install my Wellbrook loop heads here
after the trip to Grayland and then set the alarm this morning for
well before dawn. Got up, fired up the receiver and ZAP! the lights
went out on three of the four islands in our off-shore county. They
were out for well over two hours. All three islands that went dark
are served by the same undersea power cable and that is probably what
went out. Happily, there is a backup cable or our power outage would
have been a whole lot longer.

In any case, I heard no TPs this morning, but there is definite hope
for tomorrow!

I also noted the Japanese big guns to be well down from yesterday.
For some reason what seemed to be a Chinese station playiing a
lengthy vocal by a woman was doing quite well at 1330, but that was
about the only unusual reception noted. Other more regular Chinese
catches, such as 945, 1044, 1206 were either feeble or missing entirely.

All the top tier JJ stations were WAY down; S5 to S7 instead of
S9+ on the Dual Wellbrook phased array (Drake R8)
Good audio on 639 from China. 603 was the jumble that NHP described

Nothing new here folks.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-17... Another Late Surge

2009-10-17 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

The modest band reported by Colin suddenly came alive here around 1420, and
several UnID TP mysteries that have continued for days were finally
solved.

Thanks to John and Chuck, (and a few snatches of live Korean this morning)
the constant-music 1107 kHz station was finally identified as the 10 kw MBC
station HLAV. This was a very tough one to ID, and without the help from
John and Chuck (who mentioned that the station is never very strong, even at
Grayland), it probably would have stayed UnID indefinitely. It had been
rising above the noise level occasionally for four days straight, usually
with western-type music.

In another mystery, the weak signal on 1125 kHz suddenly became strong
Mandarin Chinese conversational audio at 1423, indicating the identity as one
of the two Chinese stations on the frequency. This was another weak mystery
that had dragged on for days.

Finally, during the same short TP surge around 1425, CNR1 in Mandarin
Chinese joined the KBS station on 1134, with both of them about equal in
strength. This was the first time to hear China on 1134 kHz here, which is
usually dominated by KBS (and occasionally JOQR).

So the morning was actually very productive here (on the 9' box loop), even
though it sounded mediocre until around 1415. Even the weather
cooperated-- the rain held off until 1440, when the TP-chasing fun next to the
huge
loop (in the back yard) was over :-)

[IRCA] Power Outage on Orcas Island

2009-10-17 Thread John H. Bryant
Believe me, Nick, I really thought about the current draw on that
receiver when I punched on the 313e and my shack lights went out less
than 30 seconds later. I was quite relieved when I looked out the
windows and found the entire town also jet black. Had I known in
advance, I'd have gotten a 12 VDC supply from my deep cycle battery
(for the Wellbrook) and used my E-1 for some TP DXing on an AC-less
island.. Instead my Polar Fleece Lap Robe grabbed me around the
ankles and threw me, bodily, into my Lazy Boy Rocking Recliner.
Retirement is a nasty job, but sumbuddy has to do it!

(almost breaking into voice), 972, 891, 882, 873, 828, 792 (almost into
audio), 774, 747 (miracle considering KCBS proximity), 621, 567 (another
local miracle), and JOAK on 594. A 20-minute drive would probably get me a
lot more as that would put me on the coast, but DX and sunrise just don't go

[IRCA] IBOC reception

2009-10-17 Thread Bill Harms
This past week a new toy, a Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner arrived in my
radio shack. For the past couple of days I have had a chance to play
around with it.

I already like it. With it, I am able to tune the first adjacents on
FM. AM seems okay enough, but it does suffer a little bit from overload.

Last night I tried it out on several IBOC stations in this part of the
country. It was able to decode at least five different stations that
were received by skywave. WBZ was the easiest of the bunch. This
evening I managed to decode WOR for about one minute. So it is possible
to DX decoded IBOC signals, as challenging as it is.

As I have some time, I will write a more comprehensive report. lately.

Eric,Signal on 1410 is now good for listening at work in southwest corner of
Victoria and even comes in on Sony pocket radio in office building, but 1040 is
still not strong enough here to listen to and is washed out after sunset.last
month for a couple of days 1040 threw a good signal into Victoria during tests
I guess but has not done so since then.If they are still fine tuning the
hardware why is it taking them so long? And are they going to beam this way or
keep the night time signal east -west like they were before the upgrade? I'd
like to have them here with local signal so that I don't have to tune into
local 1070's delayed and unreliable hook-up for the NHL Canucks games.Bill in

[IRCA] Anyone out west (or out east) hearing KGYN 1210?

2009-10-17 Thread Glenn Hauser
** OKLAHOMA [and non]. During a MW bandscan while waiting in a western Enid
store parking lot, which is known to be a good hotspot for MW reception, I was
getting only a very weak SAH on 1210, Oct 16 at 2105 UT. KGYN Guymon, despite
its great distance in No Man`s Land, normally owns the channel in daytime. I
must conclude they were either off the air or doing penance for running
nondirexional at night so much, by running the direxional antenna with null
toward Philadelphia, and almost toward Enid, in the daytime! ``Newsradio 1200,
WOAI`` already audible at 2107, but weak enough that its IBOC on 1210 was not
yet a problem.

Next check at 1740 UT Oct 17, on DX-398 in the yard away from home noise
sources: nothing audible on 1210. Station seems to have two real websites,
http://www.kgynradio.com/ and http://www.kgynradio.net unlike the squatters you
get if you leave out the -radio-, neither of which hints at anything wrong

Re: [IRCA] WEST Coast TA's again...

2009-10-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Enjoy the TA's while you can, as they wont be there forever I
remember well the DUs of the early 80s with night after night after
night with 2 or 3, sometimes 4 on some channels, Darwin 657, PNG 585 and
864, 100 watters, you name it, even several from Western Australia. I
thought they would go on forever, but by 1985 the pipeline had faded,
not to be heard like that again. Stations like 4MK 1026 armchair copy
night afte night. I would type my column listening to their Top 30
countdown. They were S9+20 at times! Ah the good ol' days, but
unfortunately they don't last.

- heard This is Moscow on 1548 as VoR signed on at 0300

- what sounds likeSpain is struggling to be heard on 1008 in the CBR

[IRCA] WCRV 640 out of state

2009-10-17 Thread Glenn Hauser
** U S A. Tuning around MW for traces of TA carriers (there were a few), Oct 18
at 2310 UT I found that WWLS OK had turned off its IBOC noise surrounding 640
and was also quite nullable on the DX-398, so I could hear instead a strong,
steady signal from elsewhere: disgusting anti-choice discussion mentioning what
was going on in Southern California. KFI? Surely not this early. Continued
without breaks until wrap-up at 2327, someone on phone from Kansas with
Operation Rescue, then about Nebraska and Wichita, turned out to be Troy
Newman, but show host sounded like Dick Fox, on The Complete Chapter? Not at
all sure of either name as mumbled quickly. But nice clear full ID at 2329 as
``Covering Memphis, WCRV, Collierville-Memphis.`` LSS is 2330 UT in October, so
was still running 50 kW non-direxional daytime; no wonder it overcame WWLS.
Unfortunately I did not keep listening to hear if and when they really dropped
to 480 watts night, direxional away from LA
 and OK.

Looking further thru FCC info via AM Query, for facility number 6486, I see
that WCRV transmitter site is axually barely in Mississippi. Tiger map shows it
right on the state line, but coordinate is:

34° 59' 35.00 N Latitude Power: 50.0 kilowatts (kW) Daytime
i.e. 25 seconds south of the 35th parallel which forms the southern boundary of
Tennessee from end to end (tho there is a jog in the middle at Pickwick Lake,
per Rand McNally atlas, presumably due to a surveying error long ago) (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
