[IRCA] Video Comparison of Wellbrook ALA1530LN Pro and ALA1530S+ Imperium Loop Antennas

2015-10-27 Thread Guy Atkins
After this past weekend's DXing trip to the Rockworks cliffs in Oregon, I
took a close look at the SDR comparison recording I made while switching
between the Wellbrook ALA1530LN Pro and ALA1530S+ Imperium loops.

Once I started tuning at the extreme edges of the MW band I began to see
the differences between these high performance, compact loop antennas.

Check out the description and short video at this YouTube link:

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 27 October 2015

2015-10-27 Thread Nigel Pimblett
This morning's session had a real split personality. Much as
Colin reported, things were lively from Asia early today. I started a
bit earlier than normal, around 1220, and several Japanese already had
good signals. It looked like being a great Asian morning, but turned
out things went downhill quickly after 1300. By 1330 the reception
pattern had completely changed, with virtually no sign of even decent
carriers from Asia, but quite a few from DU, and even some audio from
DU. I certainly can't claim it wasn't an interesting morning!

594JAPAN, TokyoJOAK
Strong carrier earliet, but no audio until noted with Japanese talk
at 1257. Soon thereafter it joined the Asian swoon.

612 AUSTRALIA, Brisbane 4QR
Talk by Aussie-accented man at 1344

747 JAPAN, Sapporo JOIB
   Noted //774 at 1225

774JAPAN, Akita JOUB
Doing well already at 1222, with man in Japanese.

828 JAPAN, OsakaJOBB
Good signal, //774 at 1222

891 AUSTRALIA, Adelaide 5AN
Poor with ABC news fanfare at 1330, up to fair a few minutes later.

1548AUSTRALIA, Emerald 4QD
Lots of 1550 splatter, but could make out English talk at 1335.

Several 'almost there' carriers:
693, 972 during the Asian opening
792, 855 during the Australian portion

[IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on October 27

2015-10-27 Thread Bruce Portzer
Conditions were better than average today, at least by this season's
standards. A few of the regulars managed to make decent showings.
There were also lots of carriers that "almost" produced audio: 567 729
756 891 936 945 954 964 1017 1035 1134 1188 1287 and 1323 to name a few.

As others have said, conditions were good at about 1330 but dropped off
quite a bit by 1400. Nonetheless, VOA-1575 put forth its best signal at
1435-1450, and a couple of others made encore appearances at about 1440.

GOOD
693JOAB, English lesson 1328 talking about Exoskeletons
774JOUB, Chinese lessons 1339, strong signal. Dropped out later,
but had a brief resurgence at about 1440

1566HLAZ, 1327 organ music and Japanese talk

FAIR
594JOAK, Japanese male 1309
747JOIB, Japanese talk 1305, English lesson //693 1328
828JOBB, Japanese male 1333
972HLCA, woman mentioning KBS, then pips 1300 and start of the next
program

1053jammer 1322
1575VOA, talk in SEA language 1444

POOR
738Woman talking 1301, sounded Chinese
864faint tone at TOH 1300, maybe a few traces of talk
981CNR1, 1301:30 ID and a few words of Chinese in the splatter
1098Woman talking 1325, too much splatter to ID language

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-27

2015-10-27 Thread d1028gary
As Colin has reported a very diverse and vibrant collection of Asians in the
predawn darkness was hit pretty hard by a negative "sunrise enhancement,"
causing many of them to bail by 1400. The ones that did stick around after that
were mainly the NHK big guns, although 1575-VOA had a pretty impressive late
run around 1440.
At my 1320 start time the Asians were diverse and powerful, with 1566-HLAZ
almost at local-like strength, and 594, 693, 747, 972, 1053 and 1575 all
managing good signals in and out. 738-BEL2 was peaking at fair strength in the
SF splatter, while 603-HLSA, 1134-JOQR and 1503-JOUK were in and out of the
noise. Most of these took a major swoon around 1345, though, and had fizzled
out to almost nothing by 1400. 738-BEL2 was one of the notable exceptions,
maintaining fair peaks until around 1415, and the NHK big guns did return with
fair to good power after that. 1575-VOA managed a late surge around 1430 that
was pretty dramatic, rising out of the noise to reach sustained fair to good
signals from 1430-1440. That was pretty much the story of a puzzling session
which failed to deliver on its early potential.

Re: [IRCA] Loop Antenna Gain for Rockworks #4 and #2

2015-10-27 Thread d1028gary
(Mark's AOL message is pasted below, for those who might have trouble opening
it)

<<<   Guy, is there any way that the one or two best "knock your socks off"
top-of-hour Perseus files from the Rockworks DXpedition could be uploaded
somewhere so DXers can "sit in" on the activities after the fact?

Same question applies to files from Walter's recent Masset run.

Back when you hosted the "Five Below" website, Guy, the sharing of capture
files from around
the globe was a regular activity.  I got a kick listening to the band from
places as far flung as Hawaii, Newfoundland, Scandinavia, and the Middle East.
I saved a few on portable hard drives to play if DX here ever gets too boring.
I don't see as much of this file access these days.

Even though these 1 to 2 Gig files can take an hour or more to download, it can
sometimes be worth
it. There have been occasions when DXers in a part of the world closer to
the weak noisy station on a capture can easily figure out audio that confounds
the DXer at the locale where the recording was made.  It might be the language
knowledge or that they've heard a jingle or presenter's voice or local
reference
so many times that the ID is a piece of cake for them even if a mystery for
us.   >>>

[IRCA] AM BCB DX….Recent ELAD Captures….6 NEW Stations!!

2015-10-27 Thread Robert Ross
Hi Guys:

Well…I kept the Box Loop oriented East/West last night and this morning and
Captured a bunch of TOH Recordings. All I can say is WOW!!! Conditions to the
East were nothing short of amazing and the West was pretty good too!! I have
only listened to 4 of the recordings I made (I made 14 Total), and from those 4
Reviews I have logged 6 NEW Stations and also 4 Call Changes as well. Thank
God I'm retired or I would never have the time needed to review all the files…I
have about 200 Files Backed up on the Hard Drive now...…who knows if I will
ever get to them all??? This Box Loop is doing a Lot more than I ever expected
from it!! Best of all…I got to sleep while the ELAD was grabbing all this
stuff!!

[IRCA] 1400 UTC TP Report Victoria BC Riches to rags

2015-10-27 Thread R. Colin Newell
What looked like a Christmas tree at 11:00 hours this AM
and a State building at 12:00 and 12:30 or so...
has dissolved into a single blinking LED at 14:08 UTC...
The transformation astounding but not surprising considering the
petulant and often childish nature of the ionosphere.

Early this AM (sunset in the Far East I gather...), the band was rich,
across the band,
with a blend of the regulars at stunning levels and 2nd tiers as well as
some of the Chinese
FS and regional services (all based on observations from the NHP SDR Radar
on line and
viewed from the comfort of my bed...), Koreans and what-have-you.

All that is left now is iridescent drizzle courtesy of one or two top tier
NHK stations.

Good DX all,
