As Bruce noted, there are a number of possibilities, but I've logged the
one in Vashon Island here (and at Don's place in Lamont), so that one
certainly gets out. Can't recall offhand if marine weather is part of
their programming. Have also heard Astoria, which definitely did have

Re: [IRCA] TIS on 1650

2016-09-10 Thread Bruce Portzer

Walt

I checked the FCC database. There are about a dozen TIS transmitters on
1650 in northwestern WA, including Kent, Snoqualmie, Neah Bay, Vashon,
Redmond, etc. There's also a blanket license for WSDOT to operate
temporary sites in 7 counties (basically anywhere between Tacoma and the
Canadian border). So it would be hard to nail it down with the info you
have.

I have recorded video of DX catches and audio wise, I've noticed no reason
difference between "Regular" and HD video if you want to just show off what
you've logged. The video quality can be a bit iffy, but audio is fine.

just a few thoughts from someone on limited bandwith whos had to make do:)

[IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on September 10

2016-09-10 Thread Bruce Portzer

I was hampered by noise and antenna problems earlier this week, but
things were much better today with several TPs making brief
appearances. 972 was the strongest, briefly surfacing at a nice level
with mellow Korean talk at 1307. 1566 had fair audio at times 1244-1318
with the usual Japanese program. 594 693 657 738 and 774 showed brief
audio at times.

For whatever reason, my TP DX always lags behind everyone else during
early-mid September. Today seems to be no exception. Once October
comes around, it will probably be another story - reception here should
be similar to what others report. I've never decided what to make of
it, but it's been a consistent pattern for many years.

Paul,

You should try the National Weather Service stations on 4125 kHz USB. I think
there are 6 stations in Alaska.
The USCG station in Kodiak (NOJ) has some voice broadcasts and several digital
broadcasts (NAVTEX on 518 kHz, FAX).

Paul, congratulations on your TP receptions and videos!

<<< 1323: your best catch. Should be NHK1. There are many repeaters with
either 0.1 or 1 kW. Often, all we get is CRI in Russian here. >>>

Walt, I'm not sure I agree with you about Paul's strong 1323 recording (and
video) being in Japanese. It sounds more like Mandarin Chinese to me. I can
forward it to a translator to make sure, if necessary.

Paul, nice recordings! You simply need to download the Pacific Asia List
(this is a LW and MW list, now maintained by our own Bruce Portzer from
Seattle). This will help you with the stations and proper frequencies.
You seem to have a good pathway to Japan. This is not surprising, as I
also receive Japan with thunderous signals in Masset. I'd be interested in
hearing the difference closer to dawn, and after dawn. This is when I hear
everything at it's strongest, with much less local station splatter. Here
is what you heard:

693: JOAB Tokyo 500 kW NHK2 station, so very easy to check for the many
// frequencies.
954: JOKR Tokyo 100 kW
1134: presumed JOQR Tokyo 100 kW (although I always have trouble
differentiating it with cochannel HLKC Kimpo with 250/500 kW in Korean)
1188: presumed JOKP Kitami (on Hokkaido, the most northern Japanese
Island) 10 kW with NHK1 network. Again, lots and lots of // including the
flagship 594 kHz. (there's a cochannel Korean from Seoul HLKX with 100 kW)
1323: your best catch. Should be NHK1. There are many repeaters with
either 0.1 or 1 kW. Often, all we get is CRI in Russian here.

You'll notice that many Japanese stations, especially the private ones,
have a typical "sing-song" style with young female DJs. Very
characteristic.

Re: [IRCA] My First TP AM DX Logs!

2016-09-10 Thread Bruce Portzer
I just updated the PAL, and waiting for the host site to post it. If
anyone wants an advance copy let me know and I'll send one.

The PAL was on a 3 month update cycle last year, but I fell behind the
curve earlier this year. The main reason was I'd gotten my hands on an
official list of 1800+ Chinese stations mostly but it was m in Chinese.
I ended up cutting and pasting from an Excel spreadsheet into Google
translate, comparing the name/location/power with what I already had in
the PAL, and resolving the many discrepancies . A tedious and
time-consuming process to be sure, but hopefully worth th effort.

Future updates should be more frequent now that I'm a few weeks from
retirement.

[IRCA] Victoria B.C. Sept 10, 2016 TP's good show

2016-09-10 Thread R. Colin Newell
Session from 12:20 UTC to 13:40 UTC

531 - mess of signals here during entire session but nothing rising to the
surface
558 - 1316 UTC music - likely parallel to 603 Korea
567 - Japan here the entire time
576 - Mix of stuff here but never very great audio
585 - " " " " "
594 - Japan - the entire session
603 - Korea (assume the cheerful sounding poppy station here the entire time
612 - Australia - later in the sesh through sunrise at great levels at time
- full quieting
621 - Unid - entire time something punching away at 620 - did not hang
around
639 - A mess of a couple of different things as well as TVI
657 - DPRK - with YL harangue - have not heard this one this well since my
last trip to Hawaii
675 - Vietnam - likely the source of SEA chat and poppy music - often at
pretty good levels
702 - UNID - NHK? Pretty sure I heard some JJ here early in the session -
tons of 690Khz splat
747 - NHK - predictably large
756 - Jumble.
765 - " " "
774 - Japan - one of the top signals
792 - Jumble
819 - Something hammering at 820 - didn't dig down for it.
828 - NHK - Japan - big levels almost the entire time
846, 855, 864, 873, 882 - snippets of audio on all of these (would be handy
to use the SDR I have to record the band!)
891 - Lot of different things going on here - often at good levels - but
did not spend the time to dig anything out
918 - Talk in Lang, 945- Pop music, 954 JJ, 963 Russian speaking at great
levels! _ CRI I gather -
972 - KK one of the better signals of the morning
1017 - I would have guessed JJ by the way the wind was blowing this AM
1026 - Talk and music but not enough to get much out
1053 - KK Jammer all morning with nothing else rising past it
1098 - HUGE Carrier through to sunrise - assuming Marshall Islands. Amazing
1143 - Poppy sounding music with occasional CC chatter
1206, 1242, 1251, Music and talk but largely in the mud
1287 - NHK - typically mellow talk

Between here and 1500 it was pretty tame.

Above 1500, 1566 Korea was reasonably warm but not that hot and I did not
note much of anything above that.

Just uploading a LARGE You Tube video that should be ready for viewing in
around an hour!

Radios - Drake R8 and 7030+
Antennas - FLG100 / W/NW Flag
ALA100 (N-S)

Ah, I used to do exclusively AM DX now I do 95 percent SW DX. When I have
use of the station vehicle later this fall, I plan on heading out of
town... well, as far as roads will take me, which is about 7-8 miles before
it ends... and setting up one night when I know conditions are good.

Paul -

I wasn't referring to you. I only said a lightning fast connection is not
necessary.

So why not spend 6 minutes and download the 1.3 MB PAL file? You could have
already downloaded it in the time taken to say in emails how slow your Internet
is!

Here is how KYUK 640 sounded in Galena at 310 miles away to my

Re: [IRCA] My First TP AM DX Logs!

2016-09-10 Thread Chuck Hutton
Perhaps you meant you agree with Chuck?

The PAL is updated twice a year, with an update almost ready as we speak. To
me, that's a frequent enough update, particularly for Japan where things don't
change. What frequency would you like?

The file is just over 1 MB so lightning fast Internet is not really a necessity.

I agree with Paul. For casual looking up, the on-line is fine, for a
single frequency, but I've always downloaded the pdf file. Downside to
that, is that the present version is from Jan 2016, I think, so it's not
updated all that often. Also, we need to keep in mind that not everyone
has broadband, lightning fast internet access! Cheers,...Walt

the ground on the firts floor.. reliabiltiy craps out after about 200
feet.. it works up to about 350 feet then its pretty much dead.

[IRCA] a Few AM DX Notes from Alaska

2016-09-10 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I didn't hear Bhutan Broadcasting on 6035khz like I was hoping to on
Saturday early morning, so I went hopping the AM band.

Here is KOTZ 720 Kotzebue, Alaska with 10kw at 219 miles to my Northwest
with KDWN 720 Las Vegas very clear underneath at times. Wen KOTZ would have
dead air between the locally automated music, KDWN popped up like a near
local

Audio at 216AM AKDT/1016UTC
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML1ALWDNJkE

I had KDLG 670 Dillingham, AK with 10kw at 396 miles to my north. Pretty
decent signal with a tiny bit of chatter from a talk program. Turns out
that's "Red Eye Radio" From KBOI Boise, Idaho (I've already spoken to
KBOI's engineer and verified this was KBOI under KDLG)

Audio at 224AM AKDT/1024UTC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qwx3am5ukyk

I logged Aleetian Peninsula Broadcasting's KSDP 830 Sand Point, Alaska at
660 iles south of me with 1000 watts just a few seconds before 220AM
AKDT/1020UTC

audio here;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAIIoBzuTGc

KICY 850 Nome, Alaska at 255 miles away sends 50kw west to Russia at night
with 5 hours of russian programming. I've already heard back from the KICY
General Manager who tells me about 10kw comes off the backside of the
directional away towards Galena.

Here's audio from 221AM AKDT/1021UTC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKufixP4MS8

Radio was a Grundig Sattelit 750 and a 225 foot long wire.

Even 200', Paul, is pretty decent for a regular Wi-Fi router. You could

That's only good for one frequency, so makes it impossible to see what
frequencies have parallels.

Paul, I have the same issue when I'm at my DX cottage. I load it onto my
iPad, and then can surf off-line when needed. A very useful resource,
especially for // frequencies, etc. Worth reading the preamble, as Japan,
for instance has identical overnight programming on many of the private
networks. 73,...Walt

Scott, these are PIREPS. ie pilot reports about local weather. In AK,
there are a number of NDBs with voice information. I've logged perhaps 10
or so of them. In those remote locations, pilot reports are highly
valuable to aircraft following. Even down in the lower 48, PIREPS can be
helpful. I've reported a few in the Victoria/San Juan area, when local
weather comes through. 73, Walt

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-10

2016-09-10 Thread d1028gary
Thanks to Dennis for his TP-DX report, and once again it seems like there was a
big propagation difference between the two Washington state locations (which I
won't complain about, this time). Although the Japanese and Korean big guns
mentioned by Dennis also showed up here, the main attraction was a diverse
variety of unusual Asians on frequencies like 657, 738, 1017, 1035 and 1044
kHz.

The session started off at 1255 with the usual Japanese big guns somewhat
weaker than usual, but with 603-HLSA and 657-Pyongyang already in weak audio.
These two Koreans stayed at a modest level throughout the session, but both
managed their best signals of the new season so far, with 657-Pyongyang's male
shouter reaching a fair level with his bizarre martial music at 1305. Starting
around 1310 the Chinese mid-band stations started to come into weak audio, with
1017-CRI's Korean service, 1035-CNR1's echoes and 1044-CRI's Japanese female
announcer reaching fair levels Late on in the session around 1325 some
female-voiced pop music on 738 (matching BEL2's format) also reached a fair
level, while 972-HLCA was in and out of good audio in the "Freedom 970"
splatter. Overall the session was pretty interesting because of the diverse
variety of Chinese and Korean signals, with stations on 648 and 936 also
reaching threshold audio at times. The best signal of the session was from 1566
-HLAZ around 1300, though, temporarily reaching a very good level.

Re: [IRCA] My First TP AM DX Logs!

2016-09-10 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Paul, nice recordings! You simply need to download the Pacific Asia List
(this is a LW and MW list, now maintained by our own Bruce Portzer from
Seattle). This will help you with the stations and proper frequencies.
You seem to have a good pathway to Japan. This is not surprising, as I
also receive Japan with thunderous signals in Masset. I'd be interested in
hearing the difference closer to dawn, and after dawn. This is when I hear
everything at it's strongest, with much less local station splatter. Here
is what you heard:

693: JOAB Tokyo 500 kW NHK2 station, so very easy to check for the many
// frequencies.

It just goes to show you how the band can be without any local pests.
