[IRCA] TP 4 Oct Victoria version

2016-10-04 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Mostly Aussie again, with Zedders there too, including a rarely heard
Star on 657 (sneaking past the splash), and a couple of mysteries on
792 and 1512. A couple of Asians faded up around 1400UT.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

612 4QR teletalk with man on phone 1351; still very good
1423UT. But often MIA as well, had to use 702 as a parallel quite often

702 2BL teletalk 1332 //594. Still pretty good 1414UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

567 RNZ National man and woman talking //756 1312UT
576 2RN man DU English at 1348UT // 621
738 likely Tahiti? jazzy pop music over teletalk 1353UT
891 5AN? teletalk 1350UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

549 2CR teletalk //612 1355UT
603 R. Waatea laid back music //765, then woman talking and more music 1334UT
621 3RN man talking , heard at this level both 1319 and 1330UT //846
738 2NR teletalk 1336UT //612 over/under presumed Tahiti
792 4RN last man standing, DU English, 1427UT, nulled 790 better with
Vactrol. Heard also 1403UT w/news //612.But not heard parallel
576 at 1353UT when 792 had light vocal music and 576 had man
talking. The latter was expected, not the former, as NSW went to
daylight time on 2 October, but Queensland didn't, so not sure what
was going on. (and had 612 // 702 and 594 etc at various times, even
though Brisbane is now a different time.so confusing)

846 2RN man talking //576 1316UT
972 HLCA woman in Korean 1403UT
1053 Korean jammer 1350UT
1116 4BC likely woman in DU English 1414UT
1287 JOHR likely man in Japanese 1411UT
1512 unID. female vocal pop music, not //576 or 846 1406UT
1566 laid back vocal music 1355UT, better on north Flag, faded down
to what sounded like Chinese talk by man by 1400UT. HLAZ likely.

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

531 woman mumbling after island music 1312UT
558 Fiji? island vocal music 1345UT, in and out for about 5 minutes
with talk and laid back vocal music. Much weaker on north Flag.

657 Star. woman talking //909 1404UT, creeping through 650/660 splash
684 2KP teletalk //702 with one second delay 1354UT
702 pop music, as ABC faded down for about 20 seconds, 1356UT, Magic?
774 3LO man talking 1316UT //702
882 slow female vocal 1311UT, if Star, no parallels
909 Star. woman talking //657 1404UT
1107 man on phone DU English inflection 1308UT
1242 JOLF cuckoo pips 1400UT, woman talking Japanese inflection
1422 slow vocal music 1401UT, perhaps JORF?
1548 4QD teletalk //702 slightly delayed 1356UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter) lots of near audio here

585 648 855 819 918 936 1008 1026 1035 1143 1323 1386 1458 1494 1575 1593

2016-10-04 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA

The approximately 2 GB file took about a half hour to download here using
Chrome.

Certainly some interesting stuff: bunch of Hawaiians, some fair DU's but the
obvious highlight were MONSTER signals out of Japan, China, and Korea.

Channels such as 747, 774, 972, and 1566 were among the loudest.

The only US mainlander I noted was 740 KCBS San Francisco.

South Americans seemingly absent (even though Richard Wood used to hear them in
Hilo, HI). Most likely in daylight at the time of recording.

Very interesting to check the "dial" from such a unique vantage point.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 4 October 2016

2016-10-04 Thread Nigel Pimblett
The season of surprises continues. After a dud of a
morning yesterday, today brought a huge rebound. Once again the DUs
ruled, but this time the Australians dominated early, with New Zealand
taking over after about 1300.

549 2CR Orange, AUSTRALIA ABC news fanfare at 1300

567	RNZ National	Wellington, NEW ZEALAND time pips at 1300, and then a
few bits of the news that followed

576 2RN Sydney, AUSTRALIA time pips and ABC news fanfare at 1100.

612	4QR	Brisbane, AUSTRALIA	Missing at the hour, but fair with ABC news
by 1203.

657 StarWellington/Tauranga, NEW ZEALAND EZL music at 1324.

702 2BL Sydney, AUSTRALIA Man talking at 1251 //738

729 5RN Adelaide, AUSTRALIA Peaked at 1315 with music.

738	2NR	Grafton, AUSTRALIA	ABC news fanfare at 1200. Heard Tahiti audio
last night but not this morning.

737	unID	At 1325 the ABC was still there, but a second station playing
music was about even with them. Possibly Magic from NZ?

756	RNZ National	Auckland, NEW ZEALAND	time pips, then news by woman at
1100.

774 3LO Melbourne, AUSTRALIATime pips, ABC news at 1200 by a man.

792	4RN	Brisbane, AUSTRALIA	First heard poorly at 1100 with pips and
news fanfare. Fair with ABC news at 1203.

819	RNZ National	Tauranga, NEW ZEALAND	Just like 567, with time pips at
1300, and bits of the news that followed.

828	3GI	Sale, AUSTRALIA Strongest of the Australians at 1100 with time
pips, fanfare and news by man.

846 2RN Canberra, AUSTRALIA Time pips, ABC news fanfare at 1300.

855 4QO/4QB Time pips, ABC news fanfare at 1300.

882 StarAuckland, NEW ZEALAND Vocal by a man at 1324, //657.

891	5AN	Adelaide, AUSTRALIA	Not that good this morning considering the
good conditions, but had a peak around 1315 with interview.

936 unIDReached audio briefly with slow song by a woman at 1326

981 unIDMan talking at 1128. Pretty certain it was // 1116.

999 unIDTraces of talk by a man at 1325

1017unIDTraces of woman talking at 1101

1026Newstalk ZB NEW ZEALAND Talk program, //1035 at 1325

1035 Newstalk ZB	Wellington, NEW ZEALAND Commercial for a holiday tour
company at 1324.

1053	Newstalk ZB	New Plymouth, NEW ZEALAND	Host talking to a female
caller at 1330, //1035. New one for me.

1098	Newstalk ZB	Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND	Talk by a man. Briefly
stronger than // 1035 at 1316. New, after a few tentative logs.

1116	4BC	Brisbane, AUSTRALIA	Weak earlier, but had come up with talk
about politics at 1122.

1188unIDVery weak, with music at 1314.

1233	2NC	Newcastle, AUSTRALIA	time pips and ABC news fanfare at 1100.
First definite log of this one here.

1251unIDTraces of music at 1230

1296	Newstalk ZB	Hamilton, NEW ZEALAND	After being a solid carrier for
much of the morning finally had some audio at 1316, with two men
conversing. // 1035. Another new one. A second decent carrier on
1296.02 never quite made audio.

1386	Radio Tarana	Auckland, NEW ZEALAND	Very weak, with talk by man at
1101. Stronger at 1314 with south Asian music, and even good at 1330
with woman in presumed Hindi.

1458unIDCame up for a couple of minutes with EZL music at 1209.

1494unIDTraces of music at 1316

1503unIDWeak, with man and woman speaking alternately at 1204.

A great morning for Newstalk ZB! No luck on 1044 though. Possibly
traces on 1008, but Calgary on 1010 makes that very tough.

Re: [IRCA] 729 KHz DU mystery

2016-10-04 Thread Theo
Seeing that I'm being blamed for something , it's my understanding
from what has been monitored/discussed before, that Radio National's
programming is just that: national. But it is time-shifted across three
(and in summer/daylight more) time zones in the same way as the CBC does
with non-local segments on Radio One. That must bug people in the Centre
of the Universe, Toronto, not to hear 'live' programming that went out
an hour earlier to Atlantic Time tx's!

ABC Local Radio is, well, just that. The only network on AM/MW that is
apparently same time/all places is ABC NewsRadio... the stns with the
xPB calls. Last time I looked, that was stated on its website. Must be
confusing for the news junkies in Purth to have the brekkie show start
at 4 am... but hey, Radio-Canada does the same with in
Colombie-brittanique... or did the last time I checked.

its way through to PAL yet.

The Grayland files from last February had no sign of 5RN, so I
couldn't verify it then (but I suspect I should have asked you
Chuck?). But, this morning, yes, at 1330UT, there is an ABC fanfare
on 729, not as good as Colin's recording, but quite good enough for me.

I haven't heard this one at home since the 80s. Then, it was on a
tuned box loop and a homebrew receiver, so CKLG (as it was then) was
full bore, no nulling possible without mostly nulling 5RN. Happy to
repeat the exercise using the NetSDR and the Flag, even without a
full null on CHMJ (if that's what it is now).

So, nicely played Colin. Tiddling up the null does wonders.

It's been a great season here also for 729, as I've heard audio there
several times, likely as many times as I've heard audio there in the
previous 10-15 years. Same applies to 612, which has been almost
common of late, whereas in previous years I read about it pounding in
out west, with only a carrier at best here.

<<< 558 UNID Music in passing 1350 >>>

If you hear DU music on 558, Fiji is a good possibility (heard by three DXers

<<< 585 UNID Music and such like 1352 >>>

Check 576 for a parallel to nail down 7RN. Check 603 for a parallel to nail
down NZ's Radio Ngati Porou (highly unlikely in Victoria). If neither, probably
2WEB.

<<< 603 Radio Waatea - New Zealand - assume the awesome Island music and native

Check 765 for a parallel to nail down Radio Waatea. Despite the 2.5kW power,
765-Radio Kahungunu often makes the trip.

<<< 756 RNZ/ABC either or with very nice jazz music 1350 UTC >>>

Check 675 or 567 for a parallel to nail down RNZ.

Nah, Colin, I just heard all of the above (at good levels) this summer while

Re: [IRCA] 729 KHz DU mystery

2016-10-04 Thread R. Colin Newell
*This is an IRCA team effort and a great example of the successful use of
two Flags (in their sweet spots for this frequency) and a
Misek/Ratzlaff/Lankford PHASER*
*in max null lock down.*

*For those among us that are lucky enough to possess a PHASER in
combination with variable FLAG/KAZ/EWE terminations,*
*you can make splendid work for nulling the most obnoxious pest down into
the noise level, leaving the DX behind.*

*I thank my lucky stars each and every morning I use Mister Ratzlaff's
purpose built Phaser - it is one of the most useful arrows in my quiver.*

2016-10-04 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Per the August 2016 PAL concerning Radio National: "The same
programming is carried throughout the country simultaneously on all
stations." Theo Donnelly and I hashed this out last April, and
concluded that RN broadcast in local time, but guess it hasn't found
its way through to PAL yet.

Tiddling up the null does wonders.

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/3/16

2016-10-04 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Points well taken Russ. The past was a different country.

I'm not sure a Flag would help much, though everything is worth a
try. What a Flag does well is knock down interference off the back,
and outside of Vancouver, BC there really isn't that much
interference here from about 180 degrees through to 90
degrees. Almost all our QRM is in the quadrant where also is South America.

best wishes,

Nick

Remember 1975 was just before the post sunset authorities, the breaking

All of that said though, I wonder how many Western DX'ers have a flag or
BOG aimed for SA ? That would certainly help.

[IRCA] G'day jim it's an all Aussie and Kiwi kind of morning.. October 4, 2016 - Tuesday

I imagine Gary in Puyallup reaching into his tucker bag for some treats
amidst the silence.

Anyway - for us Islanders, the sound of Aussis tainted English filled the
lower end of the dial to mid-band in what
I would describe as a second tier opening...

By frequency:

558 UNID Music in passing 1350

567 UNID English talk and features 1334

576 UNID "" " " " "1347

585 UNID Music and such like 1352

594 NHK JOAK Assumed the brief Japanese speaker that reared its bloodied
head before gurgling and sinking below the auroral mist - 1350

603 Radio Waatea - New Zealand - assume the awesome Island music and native
talk at various times between 1336 and 1400

612 ABC 4QR Queensland - spanking the channel and everything around it - //

621 ABC 3RN Melbourne - assuming the English speaker that sounded decidedly

702 ABC 2BL Sydney - 2nd loudest Aussie with stereotypical programming

729 ABC 5RN Adelaide (t) - assume the English talker - fair to good at
times with deep 730 KHZ null 1356 --> 1410

756 RNZ/ABC either or with very nice jazz music 1350 UTC

774 ABC 3LO Melbourne English at 1351 and News // 612 at 1402 Very good

792 ABC 4RN Brisbane English news // 612 at 1403

801 UIND Near audio at 1355 - worth watching in the future

891 ABC 5AN Adelaide (T) - assuming the Aussie leaning EE news at good

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-5

2016-10-04 Thread d1028gary
Unlike Richard and Colin I had no South Pacific DX show up in this DU-dead zone
this morning, although like yesterday there were a few ghostly Asians rising
out of the noise during a lackluster sunrise enhancement. The session would
have been a total bore except for the odd pattern of Asians showing up-- on
594, 603, 657,and 738.

At first band check (1245) only 1566 had a weak carrier, and the Asians stayed
comatose until around 1330, when 594-JOAK barely came out of the noise. Around
1345 the carriers on 603, 657 and 738 came into audio, and after
double-checking all of these to confirm that they weren't from the DU
direction, I detected weak Korean-inflected female speech on 603, apparent
bad-mood Korean on 657, and weak music on 738. These all bailed by 1355,
leaving 594-JOAK as the last ghostly Asian to bite the dust.

The only semi-interesting DX heard here overnight was because of the IRCA post
from Walt about 738-Tahiti's good signal around 0515 UTC. After setting up the
15" FSL in the rainy back yard I did record a fairly good signal from the
station just after 0600-- but probably far less impressive than Walt's Victoria
signal. Unfortunately I needed to record on 737 kHz because of monstrous
740-KCBS splatter. As discussed in the aurora-related DX thread recently,
whenever we have aurora-like conditions here in the Northwest we also have
mega-pests in California that get enhanced by any aurora-- and there seems to
be an unlimited supply of them.

738 Radio Polynesie Mahina, Tahiti French vocal music at fairly good level at
0604; recorded on 737 kHz (because of enhanced San Francisco splatter)

Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/3/16

2016-10-04 Thread Russ Edmunds
Remember 1975 was just before the post sunset authorities, the breaking
down of the clears and the proliferation of low power nighttime operations
started. All of those put a dent in what can be heard from SA even here.

All of that said though, I wonder how many Western DX'ers have a flag or
BOG aimed for SA ? That would certainly help.

Re: [IRCA] Latin America DX western US/Canada (was: Oklahoma TP DX 10/3/16)

2016-10-04 Thread Russ Edmunds
Geometry is a big piece. To elaborate on Chuck's comment, the auroral oval
sinks to a lower latitude in ECNA than it does in the western portions.
That results in more absorption of stations whose skywave interacts with
that, and thus more signals from the South. Add in the partial water path
over the Gulf and it's a big difference. Farther west the signal paths have
to traverse more land in the US and much more of Mexico, reducing the
availability of Southern signals.
