2019-03-11 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Collin,

It was a question I asked.   I got several replies and some good info.
They helped but so far I have not found what I was looking for.  I don't
think such a thing for AMBCB DXing or SWL exists. I'm all for it.

I'd love to hear / see your ideas.  As a Ham I use
http://www.dxsummit.fi/#/ and a telnet based one called dxspots.com

I like these two because I can filter what spots I see or don't see.  I
frequently have both of them up filtered different ways.

You know, a place where you could quickly sign in and post an alert that
you're hearing HCJB on 9560 khz or Voice of the Voyager on 6160 khz...
or there is a great TA opening to the West Coast...

Show of hands: Who would use a system like this?

I have some free server space and some ideas about domain names that could
be fun...

Anyway... hands!?

[IRCA] spotting website question

2019-03-06 Thread Stephen Hawkins

IRCA,

A little off AMBCB Dxing topic but maybe someone out there can point me
in the right direction.

It has been a while since I did any serious shortwave listening outside
the Ham Radio bands.  Retirement has increased my radio seat time into a
world not enjoyed for quite some time.

It occurred to me this afternoon as I was tuning around between 11.500
and 12.000 there were many stations, mostly all in SS.  Not knowing who
they were I wondered if there were spotting websites for SWL or for that
matter AMBCB like there are for Ham radio. Something along the lines of
DXSummit or DXScape.

A little out of touch,

Steve

Re: [IRCA] RFI on the BCB

2018-09-14 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Colin, Nick et al,

I avoided taking the openers apart until I was done dealing with
Chamberlain so they could not blame any problems on me.

I used the Mixture 31 toroids because I already had them.  I'm very
willing to order some Mixture 75s.

I ran into another ham on the Flexradio community website who had the
same problem with Chamberlain garage door openers.  He tells me that
with the bypass caps and some extra wire wound through a mixture 31
toroid his problem was fixed. He wound through his snap on toroid with
all the turns overlapping.  I spaced mine evenly around it.  His was
just a red and black pair, might have been from a power cord.  Since I
needed 4 wires I stripped 9 feet of cat 5 apart and took two of the 4
twisted pairs.  I put one end of both of them in a vice and the other
end in my cordless drill and made a twisted pair of two twisted pairs,
then wound that through the toroid.

I then rewired all connections from both openers with cat 5 just using
single pairs from the cat5 as I needed them, without removing the other
3 twisted pairs.  I used the cat 5 in the hope that I would get some
attention from the twisted pairs in it, and I had lots of it.

All this work did help but not near enough.

I do not know what frequency he was having a problem with.  It may not
have been BCB and 160m.   I will email you each photos of the spectrum
display on my Flex I took with the openers powered off, then a before
and after pic of the of the same display.  If you look me up on
www.QRZ.com you can see how close my 160m Inverted L is to the garage
with the openers.

For now I am getting along by walking out to the garage and tripping the
breaker that feeds the openers.

The noise is so bad that I have a hard time believing Chamberlain when
they say they are within the RFI limits imposed by the FCC.

I've got out of town guests coming tomorrow for a few days. After that I
will see how difficult it will be to open up one of the openers and see
how hard it would be to disconnect their piece of junk PS and hook up my
own.

Re: [IRCA] RFI on the BCB

2018-09-14 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Gang,

I made a video taken from my pickup sitting in the garage with the radio
on and all you could hear was noise.  Then as I backed up and got
farther way from the opener the noise slowly died down and you could
hear the station that had been covered with noise.  I posted it to the
Chamberlain Facebook page.  I emailed their tech support team photos of
everything.  Their response was that according to the FCC they are legal.

I stripped 9 feet of cat5 to make the RF choke and took two of the pairs
and twisted them together  and wound them through a mixture 31 toriod to
make an RF choke.  I also put a .01 cap from each lead to ground right
where they came out of the opener.  I also mounted the toroid as close
as I could to the opener so that there are only a couple of inches of
wire before the toroid.  Still have problems.

Russ,

I started with BCB as a kid.  Probably about 10 or 11.  Our next door
neighbor was carrying a LARGE old wooden Philco radio from the 40's out
to the curb to throw away.  It seems that where they had it stored in
the attic of a house they were renting, someone had stolen all the tubes
out it.  He gave it to me and I sat down with a tube substitution book
and my Dad's box of tubes and was able get it running again.  I think I
learned to solder replacing a couple of old caps that had dried out.
Still have it.

IRCA,

A fellow 160m DX chaser was able to contact the station owner and they
got the problem fixed during the night.  Signal is gone this morning.

They appear to be a nice oldies station.  Just did not want to hear them
on 160m.

[IRCA] retirement / move / antennas

2017-12-27 Thread Stephen Hawkins

IRCA,

This is almost a reintro as I have not been very active the last few
years.  Between a long commute and long hours at work, added to 2 back
surgeries I have had little time.

I am finally now living in a place I can have all the antennas I can
afford.

I moved from the San Francisco Bay area to a small house in Boone Iowa
in 2004.   I retired three years ago (unix / network / application
support)  and began the hunt for a more suitable place to live now that
I did not have to worry about how far I was from work.   We hunted for a
year.  My wife wanted a larger garden and I wanted more room for larger,
better antennas.  We both wanted more privacy.   After a year of hunting
we both got what we wanted.   A bonus for me low noise level, nearest
neighbor is 1/4 of a mile away, next nearest is close to 3/4 of a mile)

It has taken me 2 years to move, sell the old place and do some repairs
and additions to the new place (it did not have a garage).  It had a 42
x 73 foot machine shed for parking combines, but the doors weigh about
400 pounds and can be difficult in the winter.  We have 5.2 acres some
of which we rent to the farmer who farms the 70 acres behind us.   He
has told me I can run beverages across the fields in the winter after
harvest as long as I take them down in the spring before planting.

I spent the last two summers working on antennas.  We had a bad hail
storm last March (golf ball sized hail driven by 60 MPH winds) $29K
worth of damage in about 10 minutes.  It undid some of my work.

It was a race this summer to finish all my antennas before winter.  I
just made it.  It was -15.8F just before sunrise this morning.

I now have antennas up for all the HF ham bands and I have spent the
last few days refurbishing my beloved Sanserino Loop.   Got it up this
afternoon thanks to help from several IRCA members.  Thank You all.  I
hope to also use it on 160M, along with a BOG or two.

See www.qrz.com  put my callsign  ng0g   in the little search window in
the upper left hand corner.  Scroll down below the bio for photos of
antennas that include views of some of our new place.

Good to be back up and at the dials.

[IRCA] Ralph Sanserino loop preamps

2017-12-24 Thread Stephen Hawkins

IRCA,

Ralph Sanserino while he was still with us, made and sold a preamp to go
with his loop antennas.    I seem to recall the radio / preamp hooked to
the loop differently then the radio without the preamp.  Without the
preamp each end of the loop was conected to each end of a variable cap.
Then one single loop went around the outside of 12 turn loop and each
end of it connected to a cable going to the radio.

With the preamp I seem to remember you did not use the single loop on
the outside of the larger 12 turn loop, but I cannot remember how the
preamp / radio got connected to the loop.   If any one has one of these
and / or remembers how the preamp connect to the loop and the radio
please contact me off list and let me know.

Thanks,

[IRCA] Eclipse experiment

2017-08-21 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Gang,

I drove to Grand Island NE two days early and met 3 old shipmates from
the submarine I lived on way back when.   We got about 2 minutes and 40
seconds of totality.   Using my Sony SW-35, I intentionally listened on
850 for KOA every few minutes starting about 2 hours before totality.
NADA just band noise.   Approx 4 minutes before totality and lasting a
little while after KOA was good copy.

BTW totality was spectacular.  A good time was had by all.  Took HWY 30,
the old Lincoln Hwy all the way back from Grand Island to my home near
Moorland Iowa.  Very little traffic.  I hear the major roads were / are

[IRCA] Motel QRM

2017-08-16 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Gang,

It seems that about 3/4 of the time I travel I end up in a hotel or a
motel that has QRM on every AMBCB frequency strong enough to blank out
all but the strong locals (if there is one). Some of the nicer motels
seem to be the worst. On a recent trip to my wife's family reunion in
eastern NY we stayed in a Best Western in Ohio. Tuning the entire BCB
I with my Sony ICF-SW35 I could hear 1 station clearly, and one faintly.

I am open to suggestion.

After 2 back surgeries and now scoliosis my back wakes me up a LOT in
the middle of the night. I suspect my spinal column was a factory
reject acquired off ebay or craigslist. I sleep with the radio and a
single earbud, (stereo cut with one bud cut off). I like the SW-35 for
several reasons, among them are:

It has 50 memories

It will shut itself off after a reset-able time

It has a button I can push to temporarily light up the dial so I can see
the time

And while not the best performer I have ever owned, it has worked well
for a long time. It is aging and if anyone has suggestion for a better
replacement please pass them on.

Thanks,

My experience with car radios has been not 100% but pretty much the

The AM radios in most aftermarket car stereos are even worse.

one reason I was wondering if there is some adjustment to peak the antenna like
years ago. But with so much computer stuff today, there is probably some chip and
self adjusts, but I have no clue.

Re: [IRCA] #2000 logged from Michigan

Tim,

Good going. Congratulations.

Steve

On 12/28/16 9:32 AM, Tim Tromp wrote:

I had hopes of hitting #2000 before the year ended, and that goal was
accomplished yesterday afternoon when a faint 1490 KLGR was heard. I don't
count call changes and all logs between 530-1710 kHz have been from my same
suburban west Michigan location.

I started my logbook in 2009 with a "barefoot" DX-440 that was good for a
few hundred stations, but I wanted more! Enter the Quantum Loop, which
worked wonderfully with the DX-440, and netted me a few hundred more
stations including my first Trans-Atlantic station (1134 Croatia) and
several more TAs to follow, most of which are now history. Still wanting
more, but reaching the limit of the Q Loop, I knew it was time to go
bigger. I bought a 500 FT spool of wire and laid it on the ground in a
straight line, connected it to the DX-440, and started logging a whole new
mix of more distant stations. I learned more about BOGs and discovered how
Neil Kazaross was phasing two of them and soon went back to DX Tools and
purchased a Quantum Phaser to try it for myself.

It didn't take long to hit #1000 with this setup. At this point I'm
pushing the DX-440 to its limit, so I decided to try SDR and eventually
opted for the Perseus which I still use today. A reversible D-KAZ loop was
also added to the mix a few years ago.

Some obligatory stats since starting this adventure in 2009: 47 states
heard with AK, HI & DE still needed (keep dreaming). Most distant catch:
702 2BL Sydney @ 9,345 miles/15,039 km. Nearest unheard: WBCH @ just 59
miles! 169 graveyarders and 37 countries heard on MW. Recordings of some
of my more interesting catches are posted to YouTube here:

Gang,

After two back surgeries my back wakes me up a lot in the middle of the
night. I have a very nice Sony SW-35 portable radio that I listen to
until I can go back to sleep. About 1130 CST last night on 670 I could
hear three stations.

One semi strong with an American football game on.
One pretty faint that was nearly covered by the other two
and the third station was an SS that sounded like a news cast.
Periodically they played recordings of what ever they were talking
about. The recordings were all of someone giving a speech in Spanish.
An angry speech full of ranting and shouting. I could not get an ID and
this "reporting" then "recorded speech" then repeat went on for 10 or 15
minutes.

Any thoughts as to who that might have been.

I hope everyone has a peaceful, happy Christmas,
Steve

playing for what ever we were doing. I just turned 70 and have a hard
time sleeping due to several visits to the body and fender shop for work
on my back. Thus it is coffee that keeps me going. So mine might be

think there is a song about espresso machines, or french presses. I
could be wrong though.

[IRCA] small radio recommendations

2016-07-16 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Gang,

I have a friend who lives in eastern NY in a very rural setting. AM BCB
reception is not great. He has a CCRadio but it is not convenient to
carry around. He is looking for something small that is pretty high
performance as far as AM BCB reception goes. He is not technical so he
would not be able to do any mods.

I have not used any of the newer small radios so am looking for
experienced opinions.

Thanks,

Steve

Re: [IRCA] KYOS 1480 Merced CA

I spoke with Rick quite a bit sometime in the late 1990's or early 2000's
(can't remember exactly when) about a DX test on their expanded band
station. It didn't work out at the time, but I found him to be a very nice
guy and very friendly.

Re: [IRCA] Pirate radio stations are making a comeback

2016-05-03 Thread Stephen Hawkins

IRCA,

Reading this online article the thing that popped out at me was
triggered by this paragraph.

-

"The DJs sound like you and they talk about things that you're
interested in," said Jay Blessed, an online DJ who has listened to
various unlicensed stations since she moved from Trinidad to New York
City more than a decade ago.

"You call them up and say, 'I want to hear this song,' and they play it
for you," Blessed said. "It's interactive. It's engaging. It's communal."

--

This person is describing how radio was when I was a kid. The 1996
rewrite of the telecommunications act allowing 4 companies to own most
of the radio stations, newspapers, and televisions in a given market, is
I believe a direct consequence of this action.

For the most part local radio is not local, at least as I experienced it.

In the mid to late 1950’s there was only one Rock and Roll station in
Tucson, KTKT and during the day it was my station. Back then there were
a lot of “daytime only” stations and KTKT was one of them. The DJ talked
to you, not at you. They and the stations that they worked for did
everything they could to make the station more then just background
music. They were given room to be creative and be funny. You really
listened to the radio, not just had it on in the background, because you
never knew what they might do or say. And the radio was a great way to
meet girls.

Once KTKT finally got permission to stay on at night, such a huge number
of kids would call the station nonstop, that the phone exchange would be
jammed up all of the time. Kids quickly uncovered a technical quirk that
was a side effect of this telephone traffic jam. When you dialed the
station you almost always got a busy signal. But so did thousands of
other kids. We discovered that if you spoke in between the slow beeps of
the busy signal, other kids who were also hearing the busy signal could
hear you. You just had to wait for the beep and then say “Hello” and
almost always you would get an answer. This communication technique
probably anticipated Internet “Chat Rooms” by over 30 years, but it took
a little getting used to. The conversations sounded like: “beep, what,
beep, school, beep, do you, beep, go to, beep.” Or, “beep, how, beep,
old, beep, are, beep, you, beep.” If the two of you struck an emotional
or hormonal cord then one of you would give the other their phone number
and you would both hang up, and establish a real phone conversation. If
you didn’t find anybody you were attracted to all you had to do was hang
up and dial back. The chances are that the next time you would land on a
different trunk line and get somebody different. Frequently you might be
able to hear several people. Occasionally when this happened the
conversations would get pretty steamy, or about as steamy and anything
ever got in the late 1950’s early 60’s.

Before KTKT got permission to stay on all of the time they said goodbye
at about 5:00pm and left the air. But right about that time especially
in the winter KOMA, a powerhouse running 50,000 watts, came booming in
from Okalahoma City. Kids all over the western U.S. grew up listening to
KOMA at night. I can still remember countless hot summer evenings, the
smell of an approaching desert thunderstorm in the air. The breeze ahead
of the storm beginning to drop the temperature, distant lightening
strikes crackling out of the radio speaker along with KOMA’s jingles,
“Yours Truuly KOMA”. I recently exchanged email with one of the KOMA
DJ’s from the late 1960’s. He told me that the calls on the request line
used to amaze him, as they came from all over including troops in Vietnam.

Re: [IRCA] Audacity editing problem

2015-12-21 Thread Mike Hawkins
Look for both a difference in sample rate as well as the bit rate. I do
some editing on files using 44.1 KHz, while others use 48 KHz. A
difference in bit rate (as someone else mentioned earlier) could also make
a difference. The difference would be even more pronounced if sample rate
is also off.

They COULD have anti-malware running on a Mac, but there aren't any
anti-virus products for Mac.

Thanks Scott. I kind of follow it. 88.1 is interesting here, as when I

locks the HD, totally eliminating analog KWAO. Infact on any portable on
non HD radio, all I get is KWAO. I was quite taken back when the Sony gave
me KQOC! The same is true with 96.5. When I first tune it in, I am getting
analog KCYS Seaside, with within seconds again (depending of the signal),
KJAQ Seattle locks the frequency. At that point hearing KCYS takes work and
I have to turn the yagi to knock KJAQ down to get local KCYS. It is odd
sounding to me. Also sometimes when I land on 96.5, I immediately get the
KJAQ ID, before I get the station! So the audio is KCYS (also Country) and
I am getting the ID RDS from KJAQ. I guess that is what you have
explained, but it is different to say the least! So the sub channels I am
hearing, when they pop in at 1% of th
e analog signal. I thought I might get some HD from Seattle as I know
that years ago when the powers were a lot less (60s/70s), some ran a couple
KW or so from Cougar Mt and I got them in full FM Stereo. One I wanted was
KNHC 89.5, but so far no luck. even in analog. I used to get it years ago
off and on, but I did have a better yagi. I may stack two FM6's. I'll say
one thing, HD FM is a different thing. It will be interesting with E Skip.
I guess I could get the RDS ID without getting the audio from the station
too, depending on how stable the signal is. Being away from FM DX for 25
years, the dial is sure a lot different than it was.

urban areas do, read on. For those who don't...another thread will be
along shortly with convention news ;)

  --

As far as propagation is concerned, there is nothing at all magical
about the digital signals that flank the analog FM signal to create HD
radio on FM. The ionosphere doesn't care whether it's analog or digital
modulation. If a signal is (a) strong enough to be received and (b)
doesn't have something stronger sitting over it, you'll get it. If
either of those factors doesn't exist, you won't.

So: it helps to think of the digital signal as something separate from
the analog. If you're getting KUOW in HD, for instance, you're really
  getting:

  --94.6 ---

KUOW lower digital carriers (on the same piece of spectrum used by an
  analog 94.7 signal)

  --94.8 ---

KUOW analog signal (centered at 94.9)

  --95.0 ---

KUOW upper digital carriers (on the same spectrum used by an analog 95.1
  signal)

  --95.2 ---

Depending on the station's technical setup, the digital signal may
literally be completely separate from the analog. At WXXI-FM, for
instance, our digital signal uses a separate transmitter, separate
transmission line and separate antenna bays interleaved with our analog.
It is possible (albeit not currently legal) for us to completely turn
off our analog transmission chain and run only the digital carriers. If
you were listening on an analog radio, you'd hear nothing on 91.5 (or
maybe even be able to DX something else on that frequency), but an HD
radio would detect the digital carriers and still give you WXXI-FM when
  tuned to 91.5.

The digital carriers operate at much lower power levels than the analog.
Initially, digital operated at just 1% of analog, or 20 dB below carrier
(-20 dBc). More recently, the FCC has started allowing stations to use
higher power levels of 4% (-14 dBc) or even 10% (-20 dBc) of analog.

So using KUOW as an example, let's say it's still -20 dBc. That's 100kW
in analog and 1 kW in digital. If you're in metro Seattle, that 1 kW
digital is plenty to still ride right over anything else that might be
coming on the adjacent channels of 94.7 and 95.1. If you're way down in
Seaside, though, those 1 kW digital signals are DX: point a good antenna
right at Seattle and you might get them strongly enough to decode, IF
there's nothing else in the way on those frequencies. Point the antenna
away from Seattle or disconnect it and you won't hear much of anything,
as would be the case with ANY signal of 1000 watts from 100+ miles away.

This leads to a bunch of interesting

Re: [IRCA] IBOC Hash AM vs FM OT question

2015-05-18 Thread Mike Hawkins
To me, FM IBOC is like bacon sizzling as its cooking. It not as obnoxious
as it is on AM, but it has the same effect. As an example, 97.3 in San
Francisco (xmtr 20 or so miles away) runs IBOC. It does not have obvious
artifacts on adjacent channels. If they turn it off (as they sometimes
do), I immediately have a strong signal from Visalia CA (200 miles away)
and a RDS readout. I don't get RDS on 97.5, but I also get a strong signal
from 97.5 in Merced about 130 miles away. Its effect is as bad on FM as it
is on AM. You just don't notice how bad it really is until you can do an
IBOC on/IBOC off comparison.

I have a college station on 91.1 that uses HD 1 mile away from me. I

Re: [IRCA] IBOC Hash AM vs FM OT question

2015-05-18 Thread Mike Hawkins
I don't get hash on distant FM stations, but there really isn't hash at
all. Its a blanking of adjacents. You have to remember too that they are
using lower power for the digital components. If they up the power, you'll
get the full force of the signal.

They try to convince us that this is the future of radio, but the last
thing I want is to know whether Rush Limbaugh is wheezing. AM is sports or
conservative talk. FM is I-Heart-Monopoly. If it weren't for skip, I
would listen exclusively to the all-news station until I got bored with
it. Outside of the DX groups, I don't even know anyone who listens to
radio anymore. I know nobody who even owns a HD radio. They have had
years to get one, so where are they. I think the only thing that HD radio
has really accomplished is to lose all of the non-locals and semi-locals in
the noise left behind by the artifacts.

The fidelity doesn't matter if the choices are non-existent. Elvis left
the building years ago.

Thanks Mike. It sounds like, at least in your case, the FM IBOC noise is
an issue if on a local station. Do you get any IBOC FM Hash on distant
stations? As I mentioned, even the powerful 88.1 from Newport down the
coast, it is stable and I get both channels FM1 FM2, yet on 88.3 I hear a
mix of Portland and some translator. I have compared a non-IBOC near an
IBOC, both distant signals and I do not notice anything different. The hash
must be wiped out at some distance then. I am glad we have no IBOC locally.
At least for now. Our stations for the most part have little money, so I
doubt we will get any soon. Two stations do run RDS though. KFMY 99.7 I
never detected the RDS before I got the FM6 up. The other is KOAC FM 89.7
and they are strong in RDS.

To me, FM IBOC is like bacon sizzling as its cooking. It not as
 obnoxious
as it is on AM, but it has the same effect.
I don't get RDS on 97.5, but I also get a strong
 signal
from 97.5 in Merced about 130 miles away. Its effect is as bad on FM as
 it
is on AM. You just don't notice how bad it really is until you can do an
  IBOC on/IBOC off comparison.

I have a college station on 91.1 that uses HD 1 mile away from me. I

Re: [IRCA] Saved Perseus Files

Look in the program's menus for PREFERENCES or CONFIGURATION. There will
be places that you can set all of your folder specs. If you don't set
them, you get what you get. Also, clicking on the file on the Desktop
itself will cause the file to open (or try to) with whatever application is
defined by Windows to be associated with that type of file. That doesn't
change unless you tell it to either.

correct...in Perseus ...wav / file / ... then it opens the documents

Re: [IRCA] Saved Perseus Files

2015-01-24 Thread Mike Hawkins
I just did a Google search and found a manual...I don't know if it is for
the same version of the software that you have. A link is here:

http://microtelecom.it/perseus/perseususermanual-en14.pdf

The top half of page 17 says essentially that recording and playback are
both done based on browsing to the directory where files are/will be
stored. The only thing that could make that quirky is that Windows 7
sometimes uses two different references for system areas. One you can
access and the other one gets you a slap on the wrist when you try (Access
Denied messages).

They want you to store everything in My Documents, which is actually the
worst possible place to store files considering that you will eventually
need to rebuild your computer when user registry hives crash due to bloat.
They do that so forensic analysis of bad guys is easier to do. If the
stuff I said in the last paragraph resembles what you are getting, create
directories for your Perseus use, and put everything there.

I select 'wav' on Perseus the select 'file' on Perseus ... at that point
the Documents folder opens along with its selections of previuosly recorded
files that I have put there. If the file that I want to play is a new one,
it is on the desktop at this point. If I then click on that file (on the
desktop), it opens in the windows media player. If I want to hear the file
on Perseus I need to drag it into the documents folder as I have indicated
earlier. I probably should just have Mestor put all of the files in there
to begin with and the extra step would be gone. I was interested in how /
 where others saved their files.

I think we've beat this one to death Chuck :-)

Re: [IRCA] Phone exchanges (was Re: KIDD-630)

2014-12-28 Thread Mike Hawkins
Different reason completely. Exchanges were used because people doing the
phone system planning thought their user base was not intelligent enough to
remember that many numbers. Their answer was to use exchanges that people
would be more likely to remember. When it reached a point with phone
system expansion that remembering the exchanges became the more difficult
task, they gave up and just used the numbers that the exchanges
represented. As late as the 1990's, those people said that people in
general could not remember more than 7 numbers in a row.

And we still have those letters on our telephone keypads, which seem to be
reserved for marketing fools.

the British Empire (as recently as 1961, the population was over 90% white,
 with origins in the UK).

Wow! What a walk down memory lane. I had lost a lot of bulletins through
the years with moves and all, plus I did not join the IRCA until 1968, so I
missed out on the first 4 years. What a change in DXing through the years.
As each year goes by, it is just a little slice of time, but when it all
adds up and I go back to 1964, radio was in a different World. AM was it.
FM was not popular and in many cases, few people listened to it. AM's
supported the FM's. Chief Engineers were from the old school of knowing was
a QSL was and the percentage of QSL's a DXer got back on their first try
was nearly 100%. I know in the mid 60s, I rarely had to send out a follow
up. Even when I did, the reply came through then, with rarely any hold

I agree for the general population. I live in Boone, Iowa which is a
little like Mayberry, but with high speed internet. I find myself
listening to the local KWBG, during the day, especially in the morning
when all the programming is very local, ie, school lunches, what's going
on in the little cafe built in to the local grocery store, what is
happening around town today. I love it.

Having lived in the San Francisco Bay area for 27 years where there was
a plethora of radio choices, the only things I miss, besides Jon Miller

Just a guess, but...

610 - 530 = 80
530 - 80 = 450

IF oscillator is at 455. If you have an analog dial, see if it gets any
stronger at 610-((610-455)/2)=532.5

Another possibility, it could have been a mixing product from my local on
 610. Last week one of their towers was struck by lightning and they were
off air, both their AM and FM for more than a day. Both are back up now tho
they both sound terrible. The AM is running it's full 10kW, but the
modulation is way down to the point of not being able to hear it on my
truck radio. The FM is LH channel only and up and down in volume. If what I
heard on 530 was caused by CKYL-610, I haven't yet been able to figure out
the math. In the past when I've heard mixing products caused by CKYL, it's
always been there underneath the product signal. Not this time. Anyone have
 any suggestions?

The radio used here was my Perseus and the antenna my western beverage.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] AM: No Static At All

2014-06-17 Thread Mike Hawkins
Similarly, KMPX in San Francisco broadcast album-oriented rock back in the
days when it was called underground. The DJs were generally from Top 40 AM
stations who felt there was more to the music than what could be said in
three minutes or less. KMPX became very popular in San Francisco, and the
owner decided that the DJs were getting paid too much money. Out of the
kindness of his heart, he instituted a pay cut and they instituted a
strike. They pooled their money and bought a floundering classical station
owned by Metromedia named KSAN. They moved their format from KMPX to KSAN,
and KSAN immediately became the #1 FM station in San Francisco for younger
demographics, and also became the station that was copied in every major
market. KSAN lasted from 1967 until it went country somewhere around 1980.

Do you remember what group played on the street at the KMPX strike, and
who paid for it? Blue Cheer, and Owlsley. Looking back it seems like a
commercial, as Blue Cheer was one of Owlsley's products.

Re: [IRCA] Morse Code mystery on 1440

2014-02-09 Thread Hawkins

Rick,

Steve here in Boone, Iowa. Listening on my 160M inverted L I hear an SS
rising above a unintelligible jumble. No CW.

BTW for those DX'ers in warmer climates, at 0548 local / 2348 GMT it is
5.5F here. Low tomorrow night is supposed to be -10F, no surprise.

To see what happens when you throw a cup of boiling water up in the air
when it is -13F see:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uHgPUoRvJQfeature=youtu.be

This is my wife doing the throwing, and me doing the poor digital
filming. The boiling water freezes into a frozen fog and blows away
in the wind.

CNN just momentarily rose above the SS on 1440, not sure who it is.

Per Wikipedia, XWA started experimentally on 01 Dec 1919 and began regular

1920 when they broadcast election returns. It was listed as unclear
whether their license had been received by that date. KQW was not licensed
until 09 Dec 1921, but had been using experimental calls since 1909.

Re: [IRCA] Cable Routers OT

2013-10-17 Thread Hawkins

Patrick,

If they are like my ISP (Mediacom the cable company) they charge you a
few dollars a month to rent the cable modem. You don't have to use
theirs, you can buy your own. I chose not to because, if it is my cable
modem, and there is a problem the first words out of their mouths are
it's probably your cable modem. Then I say, no it's your cable
modem. Then shortly the problem get fixed, usually on their end.

Apple makes only routers, so you'll still need a separate modem. If
Charter is like a lot of other cable companies, you can buy your own modem
as long as it's a model that Charter can support.

Does Charter charge you a monthly fee for the Arris box? If so, it's
probably cheaper in the long run to buy your own modem or modem/router
combo. For example, when my cable op started charging $5/month for a
modem, I returned it and bought my own. It cost ~$70, so it paid for
itself after 14 months.

Since my original post below, I switched to an AirPort Extreme to get
better coverage throughout my house. As with the Time Capsule, I haven't
noticed any QRM on any band.

Re: [IRCA] Broadband Cable Internet

2013-09-23 Thread Mike Hawkins
I would also recommend that before you allow the installer to leave the
premises, you run through all the frequencies you intend to listen to and
make sure you don't have any noise issues anywhere. When Comcast installed
my internet and TV boxes, I had serious noise issues on my radio. Their
expert said it couldn't be because of their box because everything was
working. Their expert had never heard of a bad solder joint. Everything
had the conductivity it was supposed to, so it worked fine for his
purposes. It also radiated RF garbage in a 6-foot radius. He replaced the
box. I tested it. It worked. Don't let him leave without testing!

The box in the yard isn't likely to cause any interference, you could
probably run the cable directly to your radio and not get any noticeable
noise. The line amps and filters on the cable systems (usually) have a
pretty sharp cutoff below ~50MHz. Watch out for possible DC voltage if you
try this at home ;) Once it's installed it will probably be grounded to the
electrical ground. I switched the grounding block from electrical to Earth
even though it wasn't causing a problem just to prevent future mystery
 noises.

The majority of the noise I found with cable internet was coming from the
switching type wall-wart. I found the same for the router and hubs.

Some of our local thrift stores have boxes of old wall-warts and I managed
to round up enough with the same voltage ratings and equal or higher
current that are transformer based. Look for the big, heavy ones. If it
wouldn't hurt to get whacked in the head with it isn't transformer based
 unless it's very small.

You can also check them with an Ohmmeter. If the meter reads 100 Ohms and
stays steady it's transformer based, if it shows open or increases over
time then it's a switching supply.

If your not going wireless make sure you have good quality CAT5e or CAT6
cables, you'll have better network speed if you have more than a 10' or so
run anyway. My wireless router is dead silent from 100KHz to 30MHz and I'd
avoid using the USB network interface if it has one.

If your going from dialup to high-speed I think you'll be happy with the $
 and effort as well spent.

am still hoping no issues, but at this point it doesn't sound like any.

Re: [IRCA] Possible cable internet noise??

2013-09-20 Thread Hawkins

Martin et al,

I have an extensive in house computer network ie, firewall, wired router,
2 switches, and a wireless router. I have 11 computers (all linux
except 2 OS-X Apple). I get little or no interference from any of this.

I do get interference from my computer monitor occasionally. I have a
KVM switch (Keyboard, Video, Mouse switch) it allows me to switch one
keyboard, monitor, and mouse between several computers. I strongly
suspect it is actually from the cable (which I have tried shielding) as
I can make it go away by switching to a computer that is not displaying
anything.

My biggest source of interference comes from a neighbors house about 3
doors down. Using my Sangean ATS909 I have tracked this down to
something in a neighbors basement. He has not been home much so I don't
know what it is. I suspect a cheap switching power supply as I can hear
multiples of the interfering signal as I go up in frequency.

could tell. At least no wide band noise. I was on 600 kHz which is
fairly clear frequency with no stations in the NW. The nearest is SASK
or MT. Both are weak here. I did not check out the whole band, but
nohing noted on 600. I get more TVI from my own TV in the house! Maybe I
have nothing to worry about. Since Charter Cable has to run the cable
around to the far side of the house to where the power ground is, they
run is across the front of the yard and back behind the house, a run of
about 80 feet. But it will be buried. Hopefully no issues. The TVI noise
I get from homes with cable may be the TV set itself radiating. It may
be another week or more before they will run the drop and then into the
house. But at least I did not notice any noise out by the Charter boxes.
I fiqure that is a good sign.

Re: [IRCA] [ABDX] Re: Hi

What this really does is show that a lot of users are not keeping
up-to-date anti-virus software and malware protection running on their
computers at all times. Having and using those can't keep you safe 100% of
the time, but they do a pretty good job. You can lead a horse to water.

They're free nowadays. Use them.

I know me very well. And I didn't send it out. It was sent to* all of

other lists. That is what a virus does and that is why you shouldn't open

I identified it as a virus and warned everyone.
