I heard a clear ID on 1690 WPTX Lexington Park MD this morning. Can anyone
close to the station tell me what network news they take at night? The news
runs for 4 minutes followed by a 60 second spot. I just don't recognise the
format or network. Thank you for your help.
Best wishes

Re: [IRCA] Likely new state (620-WTMJ)

2015-11-23 Thread todftscytj7707
Glenn Hauser has mentioned that 1150 WHBY is operating dysfunctional and is
still as of last Saturday they still are. Heard very well dominating 1150 well
over KWKY and normally dominant KSAL in Cedar Falls Iowa.Perhaps they could
make it to AZ.

Subject: [IRCA] Likely new state (620-WTMJ)
I'm almost certain that I logged Wisconsin for the first time here with
620-WTMJ (1428 miles) near sunrise on the 21st.  My SDR recording caught an
ad for a "locally owned and operated" cleaning service with the correct
Milwaukee phone number, but the signal suddenly died right before the TOH
call.  A few seconds later, semi-local KTAR suddenly appeared, presumably
their switch to daytime ND pattern at 7am MST (my local sunrise was
7:08am).  WTMJ would have been on their more favorable daytime pattern by
then, more than an hour after their sunrise.  Not sure that I feel
comfortable with one local ad without an explicit mention of the city but I
can't imagine what else it could be.

Also had 1180-KZOT at the same time in the same direction (1020 miles).
Even better, I had both 750-KAMA (400 miles/10 kW) and 1330-KCKM (584
miles/12 kW) an hour later, so some nice lingering skywave that morning.

If you hear a phone number that ties it to a specific area, thats good
enough for me to count it.

Using my DKAZ Phased Array with the beam steered about 240 deg is quite
interesting on 1610 since there's basically no CHHA and little QRM from Chicago
or Milwaukee area.

One of the stations I caught is rebroadcasting weather radio from Austin and
has xmtr's located near the dams along the Colorado River NW of Austin.

My audio is in this thread if you scroll down to post 4.

Audio was best when notching the 1611 het that comes in near sunrise here and
is from Australia (had weak DU talk once). 73 KAZ Barrington IL

Hi folks. This is an informal poll to determine attendance at the THURSDAY
EVENING DX-PEDITION held at this year's joint DX Convention.

I don't have your arrival info in front of me, but if you're here Thursday
you'll want to know that we have reserved a picnic shelter at a nearby lake
with space to deploy antennas and power for radios. The event is hosted by
the Minnesota DX Club and will be an Open House from 6 PM to 10 PM
Thursday August 1st.

Would you kindly indicate by reply e-mail to me whether you might have an
interest in attending? If so, do you need any special hook-ups etc? We
anticipate deploying a short BOG, some HF/UHF gear and hopefully one of
Kaz's new antenna ideas. Transportation will be arranged by car-pool, so
you might advise if you can be one of the drivers.

An early indication of your interest will be really helpful!

Thanks,

Mark Durenberger

Colin,
Unless you stumble into a growing field, only cops will care lol. Even then
they would be fascinated or unintetested.
I would be curious tho if you would be able to get to the north side and see
how different cx would be. Stateside should be very different as opposed to
where you are cliff dxing now. Bear in mind that tou have Mauna Kea and Waimea
blocking any effective water/sky paths.
But then again it was a tough time for me when I was in Hawaii last to get
motivated to DX during the two weeks I was there. Once I got that taste of
cliff dxing it's like a new excitement and dimension came upon me.

I am cliffside -- right on top of the water!

Going to give the coffee farmer who received my FSL antenna
(and will be shipping it back) an opportunity to use the FSL for
a few weeks up above Keleakekua Bay to see what he can get.

Sadly I am no motivated enough (or brave enough) to take the FSL
out into the public in Hawaii and cruise some of the back roads...
especially at sunrise. I think eyes would be a bit more suspicious
here than in Oregon.

Have you tried going to the north shore cliffs?  For me when I was on Kauai in
Princevilles north shore cliffs last year about this time I was thoroughly
astounded as to what I heard. The most notable was WWL and R. Reloj weak but

 Hello All,

For those on the west coast who feel a little bored with their AM-DXing
hobby, why not try out a radical new form of DXpedition fueled by
transoceanic propagation boosts at sheer ocean side cliffs?

The theory of cliff-enhanced transoceanic propagation is similar to the
effect that most of us have experienced when listening to distant AM
stations on a car radio while driving up a steep hill going directly away
from the stations--- the signals rise dramatically. But in the case of
ocean cliff DXing, the steepness of the hills is almost 90 degrees, and
the cliffs are chosen to face the South Pacific... resulting in
concentrated signals from transoceanic DX stations in New Zealand,
 Australia and the Pacific Islands.

DXing conditions at these ocean cliff sites are very rough... there is no
AC power, running water, street lights or weather protection. They are both
located on Highway 101 turnoff sites, each of which has its own unique
challenges. Rockwork 4 is located about 10 miles south of Cannon Beach,
OR, and has a 400' sheer drop off to the Pacific Ocean directly below the
DXing site. Cape Perpetua is located 2 miles south of Yachats, OR, and its
turnoff site has the additional thrill of being directly in the headlights
of 18-wheel trucks before they make their final turn on Highway 101.
Neither site offers anything in the way of comfort, and extremely
small-footprint antennas are a must. Until the very recent development of
compact FSL antennas, nobody had ever attempted serious transoceanic DXing
at these extremely narrow ocean cliff sites. Mental and physical toughness
is a must, along with a strong taste for adventure. Concurrent with a major
DXpedition planned to the Yachats, !
OR (and nearby Cape Perpetua) area by noted DXpeditioners, an Ultralight
Cliffhanger DXpedition is planned for the Rockwork 4 site from July
21-28, and another Cliffhanger DXpedition is planned for the Cape
Perpetua site from August 16-20. Both of these sites provided exceptional
examples of cliff-boosted DU propagation on a PL-380 Ultralight with an 8
FSL antenna last year, as demonstrated in the MP3's linked below (almost
all of them S/N pegging receptions, marked with a double asterisk). This
summer's DXpeditions will be conducted with the new 12 FSL antenna, which
should provide additional DU-DXing excitement. Interested DXers (who are
not intimidated by the challenges) are welcome to participate.

[IRCA] Hodge-podg

2011-06-20 Thread todftscytj7707

Hello all!

Its been awhile since I have written in. I have been traveling a
little, to Houston and later to Phoenix, working a new job and alot of
radio stuff. Last weeks I went to this gentleman's home in search of a
hallicrafter. I was so excited when he took me to his first room! 40's
and 50's Zenith's, philco's and smaller Hallicrafter's stacked upon
each other! I was like a kid at the candy store! There was so many
antique radios there! I still kept my sights though and told him that
I'm still looking for a larger Hallicrafter. I wasn't very versed on
mode numbers. George Sherman gave me a crash course on the best model
numbers on the way to this gentleman's house.

Then he led me to another room that had bigger and better quality
radios! In there he had 2 Hallicrafter S 40 A 's for me to sample. I

did buy the better working one but it needs new capacitors if anyone
knows of someone able to fix this that would be great!

I did express to him that I was really looking for a SX 88. He said he

For the first time since the 80's heard WIBC with Mike and Mike in the

Dave, I still think that you may be hearing KMSD. They are definately more
oldies than classic rock. I should be DXing this weekend (sick now so haven't
gone out to DX this week and noting no one is exited about cx) and can usually

Here in my apartment with horrible electrical noise, dx has been
almost nonexistent this season. How I have several questions regarding
the x-band stations. What are the most recent u.s. stations to come on
the air? Whatever happened to the proposed stations in Farmington NM,
and Harrisonburg Va? Also, whatever happened to the Tijuana station on
1630? Thanks,

There were a lot of X Banders that never came on the air, including my
local KCHT-1700-Astoria. I was hoping the one in NH would come on, but
when I phoned them back several years ago, the GM said they had no
plans. Several stations applied, later to change their minds. I think
the originial plan was to keep the old freq and the new one and a few
managed to do that.

I must have really been stressed out this week! I woke up this morning
Saturday, Nov 6th, 2010) at 4:00 AM, thinking it was a work day with a
:00 AM
eleconference!! I was halfway down the hallway, headed toward the
hower, when
had that Homer Simpson Doh! moment and realized that it was
aturday. Wow!
Anyway, when I got back to bed, I was having trouble getting back to
leep, so I
icked up my DT-400W and earbuds off of the nightstand by my side of the
ed and
tarted tuning around.
I was amazed at the difference in the sound of the band at 4:30 AM CDT
0930
MT) as compared to when I usually DX, which is around 11:30 PM CDT
0430 GMT)!
exican stations which are just barely audible under the jumble at the
ater
ime were booming in, some sounding like they were locals!
Of course, with my wife asleep next to me, I really couldn't turn on a
ight and
ot down station details, so I thought I'd be cool and just remember
tations,
requencies, and times so that when I got up later on, I could write
hem all
own in my logbook.
NOT COOL!
I must have been sleepier than I thought I was. All of those exotic XE
nd
uban stations that I heard and tried to remember have now faded into a
onglomeration of La Buenas, Noticias, Equis Eh Something, and
hat-not.
I seem to remember listening to Cuba's Radio Rebelde on 720 kHz,
ominating
ver Chicago's WGN around the 6:00 AM CDT (1100 GMT) TOH timeframe. I
lso
emember hearing Cuba's Radio Enciclopedia on 530 kHz with a very good
ignal
round 5:30 AM CDT (1030 GMT).
I've got to find a better method for nighttime (i.e., bedside)
X'ing!!

WGR is non-directional by day; its night pattern is unchanged since the

As of 0117 UTC their is no sign of WXYQ. CBK is dom while WAUK is quite

logged them before. Did they officially change their night pattern or
they with many others doing their own thing? 73 Todd in Woodbury Mn.

Loosely monitering 540 and this much I know: they are either still on
night pwr at LSR or more likely not on as KWMT was all alone which
leads me to believe they s/on at 8am or later. SSS DX has been
unobtainable for me this season and SRS has been limited to 15 min avg
and with a car radio. I have been working 70 plus hrs a week and wont
slow down till Christmas. I will do my best to gather real time info.
Maybe George Sherman can help me out with the SSS details and pos night
rec for he is closer to their nighttime pattern beam. 73 Todd

Very surprised and never hrd at night. Wonder if they were on day

Yowzah! I didn't think I had a prayer of hearing KEVT at this time of
year,
but I just got to the unattended recordings I made last night, and,
sure
enough, I was able to pull out some slow code, followed by sweeps and
more
code, starting about 14 seconds after the 0200 EDT (0600 UTC) TOH.
Distance
from here is 2083 miles, AZ logging #3! I had to contend with WPHT, my
local
50 kW blowtorch on 1200, IBOC noise (probably from WCHB on 1200), and a
lot
of thunderstorm static - it's just amazing how well the code and sweeps
can

punch through all that crud.

I haven't had time to listen to much of the recordings yet, but also
noted
another station under WPHT - possibly KGYN or KOKK, both of which have
been

heard been here before.

Muchas gracias for running this test!

Barry

Split Delta Flag antenna (like a Delta Flag (KAZ) antenna but more
narrow beam. It is currently set to null the west, but I'll switch feed

if not, a little phasing should finish them off.

We're just over two months away from the start of the big NRC/WTFDA
Rochester convention, and your hosts are excited to be able to announce
more details of the big event!

*BANQUET LOCATION ANNOUNCED: We've picked a great spot for our banquet:
Mario's Italian Restaurant and Steakhouse, just 10 minutes away from
the

convention hotel. Mario's is one of Rochester's finest restaurants, and
we're excited to have them hosting us for dinner on Saturday night,
August 28.

Our menu will include:

Tomato, cucumber red onion salad with white balsamic fresh basil
Penne with vodka sauce
Chicken french (a Rochester specialty!)
Sliced angus top round with rosemary-garlic au jus roasted red peppers
Greens beans

You can read more about Mario's at www.mariosviaabruzzi.com.

*BANQUET SPEAKER ANNOUNCED: Our keynote speaker at the convention will
be Bob Smith, host of WXXI radio's 1370 Connection talk show. Bob has
been with WXXI for two decades now, but he's also worked in commercial
radio in the newsrooms of WHEN in Syracuse and WKBW and WBEN in
Buffalo.

He'll share stories from all facets of his career when we hear from him
Saturday night before returning to the hotel for the business meeting
and auction.

You can read more about Bob at
http://www.wxxi.org/talk1370/profile.html.

*CLUB MEMBERS TO APPEAR ON WXXI: In addition to speaking at the
banquet,

Bob will host several NRC/WTFDA members on his show at 1 PM, Friday,
August 27 for a conversation about DXing and the state of radio today.
(Who'd like to be a guest?)

While several of us are on the air with Bob, the rest of us will be
touring the WXXI facility and watching the live show from the next
studio over.

*REGISTRATION IS OPEN! Your registration fee of $55 includes not one
but

TWO dinners - the big banquet at Mario's on Saturday night *and* the
cookout dinner Friday night at Jim Renfrew's home. It also includes
snacks all weekend in the convention room (which will be open from
Friday morning until Sunday afternoon) and your convention program and
materials.

Registrations are due by AUGUST 1. Please make your check ($55 per
person) out to National Radio Club and send it to Greg Coniglio,
11825

Genesee Street, Alden, NY 14004. On-line registration will be open
shortly at www.nrcdxas.org.

Hotel reservations are due by JULY 26. The host hotel is the Brookwood
Inn in Bushnell's Basin, just east of Rochester, and rooms are
$65/night

for up to four people per room. Breakfast and parking are included, and
there's a free shuttle from the Greater Rochester International
Airport.

(The shuttle can also pick you up at the Rochester Amtrak/Greyhound
station, with advance notice.)

Reserve your room now by calling 585-248-9000 or 800-396-1194, and be
sure to let them know you're with the NATIONAL RADIO CLUB.

*AUCTION ITEMS WANTED! We're looking for donations for the big auction
Saturday night, with proceeds benefiting the NRC and WTFDA. Send your
donations to Greg Coniglio, 11825 Genesee Street, Alden, NY 14004, or
bring them with you to Rochester!

*SPEAKERS WANTED! Are you an expert DXer? Want to share your expertise
with fellow club members? Contact Jim Renfrew at
jrenf...@rochester.rr.com to sign up for a slot in our Saturday
Morning

DX Seminar!

*BUT WAIT - THERE'S MORE! We'll also have a full day of station tours
on

Friday, August 27...which means you'll probably want to get to town by
Thursday evening. If you're here in time for dinner, we'll have an
informal dinner Thursday night...and a Rochester Red Wings baseball
game, if there's interest. On Saturday afternoon, we've arranged a tour
of the Antique Wireless Association museum in Bloomfield, just 15
minutes from the convention hotel. And Sunday morning, it's the
world-famous Quiz before we go our separate ways.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us - and we're looking
forward to seeing you here in Rochester August 26-29!

What few degrees? WMBD is a pest here, was a pest while I was cutting
my DXing teeth in eastern Michigan, was a pest when I lived in Witt in
downstate Illinois and one of my earliest loggings after I moved to
Lead, SD, where it was at least common at night. Who does it protect?

What a difference a dozen or so degrees in bearing can make !! WMBD is
always the major pest on 1470 here in Barrington at night and it takes
serious looping or quite directive antennas and phasing to knock it out
of the way and DX 1470. WVOL from TN is often a problem on 1470 at
night, running day rig.

response to be distasteful. I would like to see tact and courtesy

[IRCA] 540 WAUK

2010-05-14 Thread todftscytj7707
Tonight @2200 noticed WAUK mixing weakly w/CBK which @ times was non
existant leaving WAUK alone. They were a rarity here. Makes me wonder
if their pattern is outta whack? This also reminds me of an earlier
posting this year of north and nw SSS and early nightfall advantages.
So far on the lower end of the AM band tells me that any N or NW so far
this yr is not favorable so far. How about others? 73 Todd in Woodbury

I would say WTAM, KAAY, KOA and CBW would be my SSS indicators. At
night they would be KNBR, 1700 Brownsville, TX and WBZ strong u/WCTS.
In the winter it would be early signs of hets on 1...@ssr to any audio
from TA's and TP's @ night. 73 Todd in Woodbury MN

Robert,
Great catch! I visited this station a couple months ago. It's well
nigh impossible to hear from here (just outside Milwaukee) with WOKY
920's IBOC. But, for your records, it's Sturgeon Bay, not Sturgeon

Falls.

Thanks TimI was pleasantly surprised to hear this one!!

My Logbook and original Notes all show it as Sturgeon BAY..I have
no

Idea why I wrote Sturgeon FALLS in my postingBrain Damage
maybe HAHAHHAThanks for pointing this outand I do have it
correctly in the books!
