I never minded Bob's hobby either but after following all of the
postings on this email site I came to the conclusion
that Bob was not nearly as involved as many of you are. He never buried
pipes and wires in our backyard etc. or talked
about moving to timbucktoo for better receptions We moved to Rocklin
instead. I always realized that he either had to stay up real
late or get up real early to maximize the best receptions so we didn't
always have the same sleep pattern but hey we both had our own
hobbies.

Maria,

Years ago I probably would not have talked about moving, but after
losing my partner of 30 years back in 2002 of heart failure, I am alone
now and my hobby is very important to me. I have no idea if I would make
the move, but I have thought about it for sometime, even before HD
(IBOC), as I love DXing International stations so much. My favorites now
are Filipinos. Changing coasts is an interesting thought, DXing from ME
or NF would be fun as I would hear Europeans, Africans, etc to DX and
QSL As I get older (I'm 58), things like this cross my mind more.
Something new and different. I have pretty much DXed out the OR coast.
Sure, I hear a new station here and there, but most mornings, I hear 99%
of the same Asians, Australians, and the Pacific. At nearly 3,000 AM
QSLs from 91 countries over the past better than 42 years, looking at a
change would be exciting.

Re: [IRCA] Patrick's DX Heaven

2007-09-12 Thread D1028Gary
Dennis,

Thanks for the link to the listing for the 40 acres near the ocean at
Queets, WA, for $119,500. It sounds like a real bargain, but as a real estate
broker, I can assure you that there is a hidden story here.

If 1,512 people have viewed the listing and there are no takers yet,
you can safely assume that the property has a serious issue. My own guess is
that the Tribal Government has placed severe restrictions on development of
the parcel, possibly even forbidding it. Also, with property taxes of $63 a
year, I would be curious about what services, if any, the Quinault Nation
provides for my $63 ( fire, police, roads, etc.)

After meeting Patrick last month, I have been watching the listings of
acreage near the ocean, and have discovered that there are indeed some
bargains to be found, especially when we are accustomed to $500,000 houses in
Puget
Sound... but then again, life is always a series of compromises, and it
would be tough to move a family to the beach, simply because of a desire to DX
(as I'm sure you know!).

Re: [IRCA] Patrick's DX Heaven

2007-09-12 Thread Patrick Martin
Gary,

I had wondered about that. The price seemed to good to be true. I would
be a bit reserved to buy on a Indian Reservation anyway, not being
Indian myself. I have heard too many stories through the years.
In my case, buying a big piece of property on the coast would be
nice, but it would not solve the HD hash issue. I would have to move
completely out of the picture, Kauai, Guam, etc. In the meantime, I am
looking into more tightly directional antennas. Living where I do, about
everything is East of me, so the more tightly I have antennas nulling
the SE/E/NE, the better I will be for TP/DU DX. I am sure there is a
limit, but getting F/D ratio to 40-50 DB is something I am working on.
The WNW EWE (20X55X20) has a pretty tight null towards the SE
(Portland, SLC, etc), so it is a help.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your thoughts on the 40 acres in Queet. Will keep looking in
Washington. Oregon would be nice, but the state income tax keeps me looking in
Washington. Maybe I can find an old cranberry bog near Grayland. Hi. It would
be ideal, flood it and hang antenna arrays over it. The bogs are large enough

Re: [IRCA] Patrick's DX Heaven

2007-09-12 Thread D1028Gary
Patrick,

This discussion has been particularly interesting to me, not only
because I have met you personally, but because I have lived in Hawaii for 3
years
(Oahu), and have visited practically every place you have considered living
(Guam 3 times, Philippines, etc., in the Navy).

Guam has a hot and humid climate, compared to the Pacific Northwest.
It also did have some issues of native resentment against members of our
ethnic group, although as you might imagine, sailors are not always prime
models
of courtesy themselves. The DX environment (as I recall from around 1980) was
dominated by the strong Japanese stations booming in from the north, and
there were some strong locals to contend with. As far as the American
connection, it certainly seemed like a foreign country to me, although you may
avoid
immigration hassles, at least.

I have never been to the island of Kauai, but having DXed from Oahu for
3 years (in the shadow of the Honolulu locals), I found it very interesting.
The local QRM was bad, but when frequencies were open, it was astonishing
how strong distant DX could be. Depending on your financial resources, an
oceanfront estate on the west coast of Kauai would seem ideal, although you
should again be sensitive to the fact that we are an ethnic minority in
Hawaii,
and there may be some resentment to our presence in Kauai, like there was on
Oahu. Another factor to consider is that owners of prime oceanfront estates
may not be thrilled to have antenna experimentation being conducted adjacent
to their properties, hi.

If neither of these locations seems ideal, maybe it would be helpful to
remember that your Seaside location is already the envy of about 99% of the
DXers on the list, including myself!

Re: [IRCA] Patrick's DX Heaven

2007-09-12 Thread Patrick Martin
Gary,

There are lots of options if I want to stay on U.S. soil from NW Maine,
Alaska (Where I lived for 12.5 years). The North Slope would be darn
cold but wide open for TAs TPs, you name it and no HD. The reason I
mentioned Kauai as I have been there. A beautiful Island and not
crowded. The Garden Island, and I can understand why they call it that.
Guam would not be likely, weather (too hot and humid, much worse than
Kauai), and too many radio stations on a little island. But the Oregon
coast does have great TP/DU DX. Not doubt about it. It always has.
However with the advent of HD Radio, depending on how widespread it gets
and how I can deal with phasing and antennas. So far the WNW EWE does
the best job in getting rid of most of the QRM. So time will tell.
Thanks for your kind words.

[IRCA] Patrick's DX Heaven

2007-09-11 Thread vroomski

Good Evening,

54 miles North of Grayland, WA there is 40 acres of land for sale near the town
of Queets. The price is $119,500. Property taxes are $63.00 a year. It's
located near the ocean (yards) on a heavily forest piece of land. The acreage
is located on the Quinault Indian Reservation. Looks like the nearest AM
stations are the two in Aberdeen, WA, 42 miles as the crow flies. Below is a
link.

Another possibility would be somewhere in southwestern Australia.

I'm not sure about real estate prices but the advantages would include
- being in or near a large city (Perth) and all the amenities that go
with it
- being in a relatively affluent English speaking country
- a relatively moderate climate
- a few local or semi-local AM stations, including a couple of 50 kwers,
but not nearly as many as you'd deal with in the US
- many miles of sparsely populated coastline for putting up Beverage
antennas
- lots of interesting DX targets on the other side of the Indian Ocean
- most of the skywave interference from the east would fade out well
before dawn
- you're about as far as you can get from IBOC interference, assuming
the Aussies don't decide to adopt it too

Bruce,

If I would move, I would stay on American soil. It would be much easier.
The West side of Kauai would be very little HD noise and of course to
the West it would be wide open for India, the ME, Africa, you name it.

Dennis,

40 acres is a great buy, but still too close to HD for my liking. I
would have more room for beverages, but would I hear anything new?

A prospective buyer should make sure there is no homesteading
(as it is known in Fla.) in place that has kept the tax rate
artificially low. This sounds really low to me. Would a buyer
face a huge increase, as is happening right now in Fla.?

Also make sure there are no development rights or mineral
rights issues. Can you market the lumber? (prospective
income stream?) What road access do you have? 4-wheel?

It's located near the ocean (yards) on a heavily forest piece of land.
The acreage is located on the Quinault Indian Reservation.

That's another thing. Are you limited in how you can use the land
or what you put on it? What rights do the Quinault retain?

Looks like the nearest AM stations are the two in Aberdeen,

I like the Western Australia concept. Never been there. Probably
no 1 on my wish list for places to see before I die. I would
give that some serious thought. I doubt however you could
import your gun collection (if you have one), they are pretty
squirrelly about Americans and their gun collections, hi. (just
kidding around, a little bit)

Can't see any advantage to going to Guam. Is that just because it
is a US territory, and far away?

Pat,

I think that if a Dxer bought the acreage there, they would have to thin a few
trees. Being on an Indian reservation, that might be a problem. Those trees
suck the AM signals. I have tried to DX in wooden areas, even elevated areas
with not much luck on AM. FM signals seem to get through them fine. Being
that close to the ocean would be nice. Who knows, the property might not have
power running to it. Richard Wood seems to do quite well from Hawaii.
