My surgery went very well, only 3 hrs (vs. predicted 4-8
hrs). Total success at replacing the aortic pipe put in when I was 11 with
a

larger one. Blood pressure is down, medication has been reduced!!!

However, I had 2 small strokes. Left hand motor control impaired
(and I'm left handed). Also right peripheral vision is reduced. Started
physical therapy for both and already showing improvement (I can type now,
albeit very slowly).

Glad it went very well, and I hope the results you mentioned heal. Best of
luck to you!

In addition, one vocal cord not working (nerve was stressed,

together. Voice sounds fine, now but I have a “tickle”… which should go away

Recent issue with gum pain (sensitivity to cold) and right

After a series of tests last week (I didn't pass), this is the next step. There

Re: [IRCA] Status

2010-08-16 Thread John Callarman
I have had four angiograms in the last eight years, two leading to stents in
arteries leading to my heart. My stress tests have shown some blood flow
problems in one of the chambers, but the last two stress tests have shown no
new problems. I visit my heart doctor quarterly; the stress tests used to be
every 12 months but now they come in 14-month gaps. I've never had a heart
pain. I still consider myself to be in preventive mode, and, at age 75, in far
better shape than I really have a right to be. My wife had her first angiogram
last month after the stress test gave a clue to a problem, but her blockage was
not bad enough to require a stent. She did not have to spend overnight time in
the hospital.

My hope is that your situation is no worse than ours. My mother lived to age
99, and I have no reason to believe that I can't duplicate her span. Janice's
mother lived to 95.

Folks,

I'll be going in to hospital tomorrow (Tuesday) for an angiogram.
After a series of tests last week (I didn't pass), this is the next step. There
is a portion of my heart that is "in question." and I've been feeling very weak

So, I will be "out of action" for a couple of weeks max... maybe I'll get some

The procedure went well and they found NO issues with my heart!! Once I get
over what has made me weak for a week, I can return to normal life.
I can now plan to be in Rochester for the NRC convention... etc.

Much thanks to those folks that emailed me and sent prayers and positive
thoughts my way. I'm certain they helped.

I should be back to normal (for me that is) within a day or so, just in time

Re: [IRCA] Status

2010-08-18 Thread Patrick Griffith

Phil, that's good news indeed. You are blessed. You faired far better than I.
The past 2 months have been bad news for me. You may recall that I already have
3 cardiac stents and a pacemaker/AICD in my body. On July 7th my employer came
looking for me because I didn't show up for my scheduled 12 hour work shift and
didn't answer my cell phone. I was found unconscious and had apparently been on
my face on the floor for about 24 hours. I was taken by ambulance to the
hospital where I eventually spent over 2 weeks and ended up having a big toe
amputated! I now have a PICC line in my arm and I have been going to the
hospital every day for the past 30 days to get an infusion of antibiotics to
fight off the infection that caused them to remove my toe (secondary to
diabetes). So I've been out of work for almost 2 months now. Fortunately I had
managed to save a little money and in June, right before this happened, I
applied to start receiving my fire department retirement pension. I!
should get my first monthly check from that this Friday. It's certainly not
enough to live on. But it is better than nothing. Congratulations are also in
order to you on the wedding! It is good indeed that you will be well in time
for that. Best wishes my friend.

Re: [IRCA] Status of Nearby Stations

2014-01-08 Thread Dennis Gibson
WWCS was granted an engineering STA on December 31 which approved removal of
the antenna monitor. It is being sent to the manufacturer for repair. It is
expected that the repairs will take 60-70 days. The station requested authority
to operate at "minor variance" for 90 days pending repair and reinstallation of
the monitor. The "minor variance" was not specified. Some engineering STAs for
directional stations are granted for nondirectional operation at 25% of the
licensed power.

WEMM was granted a legal STA (notification of suspension of operations/request
for silent STA) on July 31, 2013. The justification was that the station had
been vandalized and "necessary equipment" had been stolen. It expected to
return to the air in "a few weeks".

WLGC was granted a legal STA on January 25, 2013. The justification was that
storms caused a fire which damaged the transmitter, which led to antenna
"maintenance issues".

I am not familiar with these stations. WEMM's "few weeks" have long since gone
by. WLGC went dark on October 4, 2012. A station off the air for more than
twelve months is subject to having it's license deleted.

Subject: [IRCA] Status of Nearby Stations

Hi All:

Have noted the following lately

WWCS, 540 Canonsburg, PA back in at full strength, sigs equal to WKRC and WCHS
here. Had been inaudible (but on) most of last year.

WJAW, 630, St. Mary's, WV now totally dominates WLAP & is actually listenable
here. Jawco runs a three-station shopping spree three times a year. On the
Christmas one they said they were getting a lot of calls from the "Clarksburg
Corrridor," apparently new listeners, so I wonder if this one has bumped power
up. Was off one morning in December for "transmitter maintenance."

WEMM, 1200, Huntington, WV still silent. I only hear the New Castle here. They
advertise the FM on channel 3-TV, but no mention of the AM in those ads.

WLGC, 1520, Greenup, KY not a peep out of `em here. All I can get on that
channel is a bit of WLGN splatter, no matter what rx I try. If they're on,
they're running low power into a long wire or something. There is absolutely
nothing on that channel here all day. Their FM, licensed to South Webster, OH,
is still on and playing cw.

Re: [IRCA] Status of Nearby Stations

2014-01-09 Thread David Faulkner
WWCS sure sounds like full power. Could even be ND, but I have no way to tell.
Could a faulty antenna monitor have been responsible for their disappearance
here last year? All I could get on 540 most of last year in the daytime was a
very weak signal out of WGTH, Richlands, VA.

Given their financial weakness (three format changes in the six years before
they went silent, few or no local spots), I'd say WLGC may be gone. I can't
imagine them operating on much reduced power. They have to put a listenable
signal into Huntington and Ashland to compete in that market.

I never understood why WJAW-630 didn't dominate the channel here in Albany.
With 1 kw ND, and a transmitter near Parkersburg, they should have been as
strong as the other Parkersburg and Marietta stations (even WMOA dominates
1490). Yet they were always just about even w/WLAP. Now they are blowing WLAP
away. As I recall, they mentioned new listeners in the "Clarksburg-Morgantown
corridor." They are ESPN and ID frequently and run a lot of local spots and
promos, so if you don't have them, you might want to try. Some IDs are done by
local boy Nick Swisher. TOH IDs are, "ESPN on the radio, WJAW, St.
Mary's-Parkersburg and WJAW-FM, McConnellsville-Marietta." During major
national sports broadcasts they sometimes add WMOA to the feed and do
three-station IDs.

As far as I know, the station is NOT recieving QSL requests, Jim is.

Just give Jim a little more time and I'm sure he'll get to it.

Bob,

I am of the era as 60s are oldies and the best stuff. My kids all call the 90s
oldies.

I do even DX at times on radios that are over 60 years old with analog dials

Can't say for certain. The license for WOOW was deleted some time
ago, but I've heard it on trips to Greenville. Charlie Taylor is closer
and should be able to hear them easily, if on. However, his computer is
apparently still down. I cannot hear them from my location in

In short, the station has ignored the FCC's rule about having a

It's not always that simple these days. While there are indeed some
stations that don't bother to file for renewal, have their licenses
cancelled, and keep operating anyway, there are others that run into
paperwork glitches and receive FCC permission to resume operation under
special temporary authority.

WOOW appears to fall into the latter camp. Here's what they said in
their license renewal application filed last September:

"THE LICENSEE FAILED TO FILE A RENEWAL APPLICATION WHEN DUE ON AUGUST 1,
2003, AND AS A RESULT, THE COMMISSION CANCELLED THE LICENSE FOR WOOW.
AFTER A VISIT BY THE FCC'S FIELD OFFICE, ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2007, WOOW
WENT OFF THE AIR AND CURRENTLY REMAINS OFF THE AIR. THE LICENSEE HAS
RECENTLY ENGAGED COUNSEL TO ASSIST WITH THIS MATTER AND HAS TAKEN STEPS
TO ASSURE THAT THIS OVERSIGHT DOES NOT OCCUR AGAIN.

THE INSTANT RENEWAL APPLICATION IS BEING FILED CONTEMPORANEOUSLY WITH A
REQUEST FOR SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY TO RESUME OPERATION OF WOOW
PENDING THE COMMISSION'S CONSIDERATION OF THIS APPLICATION.
NOTWITHSTANDING THE LICENSEE'S FAILURE TO FILE A TIMELY RENEWAL
APPLICATION, THE LICENSEE RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS RENEWAL OF WOOW'S
LICENSE. AS A MINORITY OWNED AND OPERATED STATION, WOOW HAS HISTORICALLY
PROVIDED A UNIQUE VOICE FOR THE MINORITY COMMUNITY AND OTHER RESIDENTS
OF GREENVILLE, NC. ACCORDINGLY, THE PUBLIC INTEREST WARRANTS RENEWAL OF
WOOW'S LICENSE."

WOOW did indeed file for special temporary authority on 9/25/07, which
was granted, so while they're operating without a license, they're on
the air legally under STA. (The application for STA explains that a
renewal application and STA app were filed back in 2004, then dismissed
for failure to pay the proper filing fees; another STA was in effect in
2005-2006, then expired.)

They'll probably end up being fined, probably $7000, for failure to file
a renewal application and for subsequent unauthorized operation, after
which their renewal application will be granted and the WOOW calls will
be restored to the database.

The FCC is really, really reluctant to pull a license for good, and will
usually try very hard to keep that from happening.

This is what happens when you have people who aren't "radio people"
running a radio station. Yes, licenses have fixed terms, and yes, the
managers SHOULD know when the expiration dates are coming up, but it's
easy to "let the lawyers worry about that," and the next thing you know
you're in a pickle like WOOW's.

This happens particularly often in cases where you have absentee owners
- the license paperwork goes to the owners or their lawyers in some
distant city, and the people actually running the radio station day to
day don't ever see it, so they may not know anything's gone wrong until
it's too late.

Another factor here is the elimination of the old FCC rules that
required would-be station owners to demonstrate financial viability. It
used to be that you had to show that there was enough money in the bank
to run the station for three full years (including paying the lawyers
and all the other detail work). Those rules went by the wayside some
years ago, and now there are almost no qualifications to hold a license
beyond having US citizenship and a criminal record free of felony
convictions.

Thanks Scott. I didn't even think of the out-of-town ownership issue. That
could explain a good part of it. There also seems to be a lot of employee
turnover in the business also - I could see that accounting for part of it
as well.

As I said, Paul, stupidity. ALL of what you said falls
into that category... and certainly how NOT to run a

And I can think of several station owners who fall into the catergory of
stupidity.

I can think of one owner who filed his license renewal 2 1/2 years late. I
know he didn't forget, because I even reminded him several times in the year
prior that license renewal was coming up middle of next year!

But i agree with Scott, stations failing to file a renewal on time is
usually because someone who was supposed to do it didn't know. When you have
absentee owners and such, things can get interesting.

There was dialogue between the FCC and WOOW in the interim, just to be
nitpicky - here's what the app for STA said:

THE COMMISSION CANCELLED THE LICENSE FOR WOOW DUE TO THE LICENSEE'S
FAILURE TO FILE A RENEWAL APPLICATION BY AUGUST 1, 2003. ON MARCH 31,
2004, WOOW FILED A RENEWAL APPLICATION IN FCC FILE NUMBER
BR-20040331AQP, AND ON APRIL 2, 2004, THE COMMISSION GRANTED THE
LICENSEE AN STA TO CONTINUE OPERATIONS IN FCC FILE NUMBER
BLSTA-20040329ANO. HOWEVER, THE LICENSEE'S RENEWAL APPLICATION WAS
DISMISSED ON JANUARY 28, 2005 DUE THE LICENSEE'S RED LIGHT STATUS AS
DETERMINED BY THE COMMISSION'S OFFICE OF MANAGING DIRECTOR. AND, ON
OCTOBER 2, 2004, WOOW'S STA EXPIRED WITHOUT RENEWAL. ON DECEMBER 7,
2005, THE COMMISSION GRANTED WOOW A NEW STA, WHICH ALSO EXPIRED WITHOUT
RENEWAL ON JUNE 7, 2006. AFTER A VISIT BY THE FCC'S FIELD OFFICE, ON
SEPTEMBER 13, 2007, WOOW WENT OFF THE AIR AND CURRENTLY REMAINS OFF THE AIR.

THE LICENSEE RECENTLY ENGAGED COUNSEL TO ASSIST WITH THIS MATTER, AND
CONTEMPORANEOUSLY WITH THE INSTANT FILING, THE LICENSEE FILED A NEW
LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR WOOW.

And, since my inquiry started this, my reception could as easily have

And just for the record - I don't know for certain whether WOOW is or is
not on the air. Based solely on my review of their paperwork, it appears
to me that they CAN be on the air legally, under special temporary

Re: [IRCA] STATUS OF FLOODED SW WASHINGTON RADIO STATIONS

2007-12-09 Thread Michael Hawkins
Glenn,

  Very detailed and informative! Thanks.

  Mike

Glenn Hauser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Many have asked about the status of your friends and colleagues in the
flooded areas of Southwest Washington. I have been in touch with most
of the stations in Centralia/Chehalis and the Grays Harbor areas to find out
how they are doing and whether WSAB can be of any assistance. I thought you
would be interested in an update. Here are excerpts from
their responses.

_John DiMeo (KELA/KMNT, Centralia/Chehalis):_ "We took about five feet of water
inside our building. That's about 2 feet more than back in
1996. All staff is OK. One did lose his home. We got KMNT on the air
almost immediately via our xmtr site up on Crego Hill. KELA is still
out, but we're hoping to get that back up by Friday. Bicoastal (our new owners)
are bringing in 5 engineers from other markets to assist. I have already
enlisted the services of a good general contractor.
(Thank God for flood insurance!) Tough start for our new owners. The
deal just closed on 12/1."

_Derek Shannon (KITI-AM/FM, Centralia/Chehalis):_ I have not
communicated directly with Derek, but with one of his business
partners. KITI is only a couple of miles up the road from KELA, and
KITI had a foot of water flooding their building. Both stations were
off the air for about 12 hours on Tuesday, but both are back on the air now.

_Cameron Bierle (KACS-FM, Centralia):_ "90.5 KACS is on the air, and
has stayed on for the most part. Went off for a few hours due to a
power outtage. KACS is working with the Lewis County United Way, The
Ranier Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army in
relief and recovery efforts through our KACS Cards for the County
campaign. We'd welcome other media participation too. It's a very
simple and effective program we worked on with Cards for Katrina
following the gulf states disasters, and then Cards for the Cowlitz last year."

_Dona Rosi (Morris Communications, Aberdeen/Hoquiam):_ "We have 3 of
our 4 stations on the air, not KWOK. We are trying to get propane up to our
generator at the KXXK site which will run out in about 12 hours. Other than
that, we’re keeping people informed. Hopefully power will be restored in the
next day or two."

_Bill Wolfenbarger (Jodesha Broadcasting, Aberdeen/Hoquiam):_ "Thanks,
Mark. It's been a mess, but slowly we're climbing out. KSWW-FM is on
air at low power with gas generator fillups every 6 hours. KJET-FM is
on air from booster site with fillups every 3 hours. KBKW will remain
off air until power is restored to the site. It is problematic due to
high water and limited coverage. We have focused on providing wall-to-wall
coverage of road closures, PUD stuff, gas availability, resources for showers,
shelters, food, stores open, etc. from 6a-6p on KSWW and KJET. KSWW was totally
off Monday and Tuesday, but went on air Wednesday morning after gnawing through
about fifty trees over the
access road to the transmitter. Would have been much better if the KSWW propane
generator had not died Monday morning. KJET was off from about 11 am Monday
until Tuesday morning. KJET Raymond main transmitter has been off since Monday.

The good news is Pacific County just got some power. The bad news is the
transmitter won't fire by remote control and I have no idea if I can get up
that road yet. We had no power at the studio until Wednesday morning but did a
decent job of reading in the dark and getting a signal out. Would have been
much better if our entire digital phone system had not died at the initial
power surge. Hard to receive calls when you don't know they're calling. It's
been replaced now and all phone lines are up and running. I'm sending this note
at 1:50 AM Thursday. I'm in between gasoline runs. Our newsguy Dave has had
reports on air within the past hour about the flooding situation in Aberdeen
which thankfully has not happened as was feared. We're doing okay. Not much
sleep but people seem to be happy that we're providing the info..."

_Joel Hanson (KLOG/KUKN, Kelso):_ "We are fine. KUKN was down Monday
morning for a few hours. A tree knoked out the coax from the
transmitter to the antenna. Lucky for us no real damage and a quick
fix. Hope everyone else makes out as well."

WSAB has offered its assistance in any that we could be of help to all
of the affected stations. We've had no requests yet.

It is very impressive that with these stations struggling to simply stay on the
air, they are still making an extraordinary effor to serve their community with
emergency information and anything else they can do to help their listeners.
