Setahu saya BIOS notebook nggak bisa di-reset oleh user. Hal ini untuk menghindari penyalahgunaan, seperti pencurian, dll. Dulu saya juga pernah mencoba me-reset BIOS notebook acer, tidak berhasil. Akhirnya notebook terpaksa dibawa ke distributor acer. Rekan-rekan, Setiap hari saya selalu menerima e-mail spam yang mempunyai ciri-ciri sebagai berikut: - Subject e-mail selalu berubah-ubah. - Isi e-mail selalu berubah-ubah juga: Isinya merupakan tulisan yang dibuat sebagai bagian dari gambar (picture). Bukan attachments, melainkan berada di body e-mail. Contohnya ada di bagian bawah posting saya ini (mungkin tidak tampak kalau milis ini melarang adanya gambar dalam body e-mail). Nah, ini juga sepertinya cukup berpengaruh thd performance server, yaitu HDD nya masih SATA. Untuk database SQL Server saya sudah pisahkan antara Data File dan Log File di HDD yang terpisah. Terlepas dari masalah design aplikasi dan databasenya, sejauh ini sih saya lihat penggunaan resource oleh SQL Server masih normal, karena memang tidak semua aplikasi sudah running dengan SQL Server ini di tempat saya. Masih cukup banyak aplikasi yang databasenya belum RDBMS, seperti paradox dan foxpro (dbf), dan aplikasi-aplikasi inilah yang memakai banyak mapping yang saya lihat sangat tidak efisien. Sebetulnya untuk keperluan user dan departemen sudah cukup dengan 1 mapping, dan itu sudah saya buat, dimana di dalam mapping itu terdapat folder-folder berdasarkan departemen dan user yang sudah diatur permissionnya. Yang ingin saya lakukan adalah membuat mapping utk aplikasi-aplikasi yang file based itu sesedikit mungkin, kalo bisa ya cukup 1 mapping. Di server sendiri partisi sudah dibuat cukup banyak untuk masing-masing mapping. Saya lihat dengan adanya DFS ini berarti kita bisa membuat partisi-partisi untuk mapping saat ini menjadi 1 mapping virtual, walaupun secara fisik ya partisinya dibiarkan saja banyak seperti saat ini. Saya rasa sih bukan pekerjaan sulit sebetulnya untuk mengubah setting aplikasi-aplikasi file based itu dengan mapping yang baru. Cuma kalo ide saya ini tidak disetujui boss, mau gimana lagi ? :( Paling tidak, kalo memang tidak perlu mapping sebanyak ini kenapa harus dipertahankan? Itu ide awal saya untuk mengangkat masalah pengaruh mapping drive ini terlepas dari masalah menurunnya performa server. Jadi dengan argumen yang lebih beralasan, kemungkinannya tentu akan lebih besar supaya boss saya mau menerima ide ini dan melakukan perubahan. Dengan DFS, anda bisa bikin 1 buah folder root virtual, misalnya C:\DATASHARE. Dibawah C:\DATASHARE ini, masukkan 5 folder diatas. Jadi, di drive C anda akan muncul folder virtual yang membentuk struktur: A) C:\DataShare\Accounting B) C:\DataShare\Operation C) C:\DataShare\Share D) C:\DataShare\Finance E) C:\DataShare\HRD Nanti satu drive yang dimapping dari Client adalah \\server\datashare. Jadi dari 1 drive ini otomatis terlihat 5 buah sub-folder, seolah-olah semua bagian dari C:\DATASHARE, tetapi secara fisik ada di folder lain. SATA II, sudah punya kemampuan ini. Dengan adanya NCQ, head positioning jadi lebih efficient, karena pergerakannya akan di-reorder. Mounting dilakukan secaya dynamic, on-demand basis menggunakan mount point utama, misalkan /export/home, lalu dibawahnya dimount sesuai kebutuhan, dan di-dismount ketika 5 menit tidak ada I/O lagi. Dengan cara itu mengurangi kebutuhan resource untuk lockd dan statd. Automounternya sendiri bisa menggunakan amd ataupun yg lebih modern autofs. Saya lihat Distributed File System di Windows mengambil prinsip yang sama dengan ini. Rada susah mengukur penghematannya seberapa, soalnya saya tidak tahu bagaimana mengukur sampai detail di Windows. Walau kalau di *nix dengan mudah bisa dilihat pakai kstat, vmstat, mpstat etc :D Paling tidak, kalo memang tidak perlu mapping sebanyak ini kenapa harus dipertahankan? Kadang kadang stability dari legacy system sukar dilawan. Kalau sudah stabil kenapa kudu diubah? Kira kira begitu pemikirannya. Mungkin anda bisa approach dari sudut lain, misalkan dengan DFS anda bisa deploy multi server single namespace, atau kemudahan berubah mapping sesuai policy untuk tiap user. Itu ide awal saya untuk mengangkat masalah pengaruh mapping drive ini terlepas dari masalah menurunnya performa server. Jadi dengan argumen yang lebih beralasan, kemungkinannya tentu akan lebih besar supaya boss saya mau menerima ide ini dan melakukan perubahan. BIOS support for 48-bit LBA. As stated in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 305098 one of the requirements to use 48-bit LBA support in Windows 2000 is that you must have a 48-bit LBA compatible BIOS. To test your system's BIOS for 48-bit LBA, refer to our HDInfo tool. If your 48-bit LBA hard drive is connected to a PCI ATA controller card, you should make sure the card supports 48-bit LBA. Untuk database SQL Server saya sudah pisahkan antara Data File dan Log File di HDD yang terpisah. Terlepas dari masalah design aplikasi dan databasenya, sejauh ini sih saya lihat penggunaan resource oleh SQL Server masih normal, karena memang tidak semua aplikasi sudah running dengan SQL Server ini di tempat saya. Masih cukup banyak aplikasi yang databasenya belum RDBMS, seperti paradox dan foxpro (dbf), dan aplikasi-aplikasi inilah yang memakai banyak mapping yang saya lihat sangat tidak efisien. Berarti bottleneck-nya sudah jelas ada 2, dan itu bukan mapping: 1. HDD SATA 2. Database Paradox dan FoxPro. Sebetulnya DB Paradox dan FoxPro sudah termasuk RDMBS, tapi masih flat-file. Artinya, seluruh data akan bolak-balik antara PC dan Server, pada saat proses. Hal ini berbeda dengan SQL Server yang menggunakan konsep client-server atau multi-tier. user yang sudah diatur permissionnya. Yang ingin saya lakukan adalah membuat mapping utk aplikasi-aplikasi yang file based itu sesedikit mungkin, kalo bisa ya cukup 1 mapping. Kalau bisa diubah 1 mapping, bagus. Tapi kalaupun ngga bisa, saya ngga yakin pengaruh mapping ini besar terhadap performa. Masalahnya ada pada sifat file Paradox dan FoxPro yang masih flat-file. Di server sendiri partisi sudah dibuat cukup banyak untuk masing-masing mapping. 1 partisi = 1 mapping? Ngga ada gunanya lah, partisi kan hanya pemisah logical saja. Saya lihat dengan adanya DFS ini berarti kita bisa membuat partisi-partisi untuk mapping saat ini menjadi 1 mapping virtual, walaupun secara fisik ya partisinya dibiarkan saja banyak seperti saat ini. Benar. Saya rasa sih bukan pekerjaan sulit sebetulnya untuk mengubah setting aplikasi-aplikasi file based itu dengan mapping yang baru. Cuma kalo ide saya ini tidak disetujui boss, mau gimana lagi ? :( Kalau ngga bisa diubah, lupakan saja masalah mapping. Saya tetap yakin masalahnya bukan di situ. Paling tidak, sekarang anda tahu, bahwa nantinya tidak perlu ada tambahan drive lagi jika ada tambahan folder atau tambah server. Manfaatkan saja DFS dan/atau User Permission.
