We've tried to sync with each Common daily but the releases have not
been good and our acceptance tests are not 100% passed (which is the
criteria for sync).

I believe the thinking is that applications sourced from partners will be web
applications, whereas most of the native UX will be native or a mix of native
and web (cf. Modello). So it makes sense to have a standard web API.

Not to mention that it's standardised beyond IVI and beyond Tizen.

That was the case with the NUC. The March images of IVI and Common would not
see the Ethernet card because of a missing module. This was fixed by late May.

My relatively uneducated answer is that any device that is always
present when the seat is present is fine. Instead of a specific usb hub,
I'd assign the usb port on VTC1010 that you have dedicated for the hub
as the master, because that way the configuration can be reused on any
VTC1010 (it seems that the udev rules that you use are specific to
certain usb hub models, so the rules are useful only on your system).
Note that I don't know for sure that the individual ports show up as
distinct devices in udev. If they don't, then my suggestion won't work.

What do you mean by "does not seem to work"? logind certainly won't know
anything about the assignments you do in weston.ini, but is that a
problem?

Perhaps you already knew this, but currently udev doesn't support
assigning different outputs of one GPU to different seats (this is a
driver limitation, as the drivers don't provide separate devices for
those outputs). This should not be a problem, though, if weston allows
you to manually specify the seats in weston.ini.

I'd suggest adding a udev rule that prevents the GPU from being assigned
to any seat, since it's shared by two seats. Instructions for that can
be found here:

Multi-seat/multi-user setup in IVI: Questions

2014-08-27 Thread Zaman, Imran
Hi,

We are trying to setup multi-seat on IVI box VTC1010. We manage to setup two
seats (seat0, and seat1) using tlm (and some modifications to udev rules file
for seat; please see end of email).

In this context, we came across couple of questions:

1- Who should be "master of seat" as it is mandatory? we have set usb-hub as
master-of-seat.
2- How could separate monitor be attached to a seat (as one is connected on VGA
and other on DP)? we have done that using weston.ini but it does not seem to
work.

Setup

- Two usb hubs connected to usb port 1 (front) and port 2 (back)
- Each usb hub has mouse and keyboard connected (one of them also has USB mass
storage which contains the IVI image)
- One screen is connected to DP
- Another screen is connected to VGA

If I do ifconfig, I don't get ipaddress ( my etherent cable is connected).
Similarly, when I do "aplay -l" command I get "no sound cards found" as output.
I face these issues on both releases.

Is there any workaround for these problems?

That's not to say that it may not be provided by somebody. Maybe a native
framework appears running on another platform that is complete enough
and attractive enough that porting to Tizen IVI makes sense... Let's see
what the future holds, and let's talk about it! :-)

GENIVI takes a comprehensive view on this as the organization often does,
which could mean it takes time, but leads to a thorough understanding and
architecture, I envision. That means describing how different application
frameworks are built in general, and exemplifying with more than one concrete
example (where Tizen is a prominent one). And then looking into what is
common and different, so that collaboration and/or standardization can
evolve from that understanding. From that result companies, alliances, and
projects (I'm thinking widely here, such as GNOME desktop) can hopefully make
informed decisions as well as find additional collaboration opportunities.

Information from this work will be published, and as always any newly
developed code under FOSS licenses. It will take a little time but "watch
this space" ;-)

> However, considering that most applications running on an IVI device are
> pre-installed, official API matters little. The OEM can use whatever APIs
> they want to use.

This is relatively true but changing in the industry. Evaluating what the
native APIs should be and finding at least some opportunities for sharing is
still in our interest. Apparently it is worthwhile for Web APIs, right?

Also, sorry to ramble on and this is not a sales pitch... but GENIVI's strong
focus on interfaces and development of the Franca IDL, tooling and
principles are part of a strategy. One of the things I have tried to promote
out of that is that APIs are APIs... With minor exceptions perhaps, there
need not be a difference between native and Web APIs for application
development. You can achieve that by copying them manually, or as
we envision generating different bindings out of only one common
description (in Franca IDL).

The challenge of course is both legacy and competition. You must stay true to
other new standards that matter; any W3C defined APIs will of course be
used if they exist. Similarly, with Qt as an example you need to decide which
of the standard Qt libraries - multimedia, networking, file I/O, IPC,... - shall
be the basis for your application API and which will be custom APIs.

The statement from Tizen devs so far I think is that Qt standard APIs are too
desktop oriented to make sense to port. I would suspect a Qt based
framework would be somewhere in between - a few common Qt APIs, some
evolved from mobile space (QtMobility etc...), and a third category will
be IVI specific.

All the best,
- Gunnar
