[JAWS-Users] Distribution List Problem

2007-01-15 Thread Donnie Parrett

Hey Guys & Gals,

I am having a problem with one of my distribution lists this morning. It
actually started last
night. In Outlook I have about 8 different distribution lists. One of them is called
"Friends."
When I try to send an email to the "Friends" distribution list, it gets hung up
in my out box with a
mail delivery error that says,
Not selected. A time out occurred while communicating with the server.
I can send everything else just fine. It only happens with this one
distribution list. Can someone
please tell me what this message means?

Maranatha,
Donnie

[JAWS-Users] Re: Organize favorites; help

2007-01-15 Thread Rich Hamel

Hi guys;
This has been very helpful.
I am not sure why , or what putting favorites in different folders would do.
My impression is that favorites are just web sites that can be accessed
quickly.
What are some suggestions on putting them in different folders?
How would this be helpful?

Thank you for the help.

A quicker way to get to the favorites folder is:

1. Press windows key R
2. Type in favorites and press enter.
3. This puts you directly in your favorites folder and then you can put

them

in to folders if you like.

Hi Rich,

Just open up the favourites menu, then press the applications key to the
left of the right control key.

Once you do this, Jaws may not speak that the applications menu is open,

but

don't worry, just arrow up or down and you'll find it is open.

Once you find that it is open, just arrow up to sort by, then arrow to

name

and press enter.

This will organize your favourites menu into alphabetical order.

If, on the other hand you want to place them in folders, I would suggest

you

do it via the favourites folder on your hard drive, as opposed to doing it
through the menus.

I just find it easier and less frustrating.

To do this, just go into your my computer, under the c: drive, then into
documents and settings, then to your name, or the name of the default user
on the computer, usually, that's your name, then pressing enter on the
favourites folder. At this point you'll be able to create folders and

move

your existing favourites into existing folders just by cutting and

pasting.

Again, this is just my preference, and others may find it easier another
way.

Victor

[JAWS-Users] Re: Organize favorites; help

2007-01-15 Thread Flor Lynch
If you wanted to organize your favorites by topic: Say for example you have a number of favorites that are streams of radio stations, you might want to put them in a 'radio' folder. Or if you have a number of favorite dictionaries, you might want to have them in a dictionaries folder. The criteria for different folders can be anything you fancy. Personally, I tend to put them all together, while renaming some of them to make them more convenient to find and remember.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Organize favorites; help

2007-01-15 Thread Ricque

Hi Rich,
Favorites are actually shortcuts to their rrespective websites.
I use folders to categorize websites.
Example:
for the blind: sites specifically aimed at the blind and visually impaired.
general computing: sites pertaining to computers
Reference: sites such asdictionaries, on-line retailers, search engines etc.
Using a folder structure such as this allows you to quickly narrow your
search for a site of particular interest.

2007-01-15 Thread David Ferrin

It sounds like you have a bad address in that particular distribution list.
Go through it and make sure that all of the addresses are correctly written
unless you've already done that. So tell us what you have done yourself to
resolve this problem before we go any further. Remember the idea is to try
and fix it yourself first then ask the list for help if you get stuck.

[JAWS-Users] regarding messages from google groups

2007-01-15 Thread David Ferrin

If anybody out there ever receives a message from google groups asking you
to reactivate your account or to click on some link please follow the
directions that are supplied. The reason is you are most likely bouncing
and one of us is trying to reset your email address to normal status. If
you don't follow the directions then we can't reset your account so far as I
know at this point in time, and after a given amount of days pass we'll
probably simply disable your email address since at that point it would seem
to any of us you no longer wish to take part in the group. This really
makes extra work for us so if you get such an email act on it right away,
that will make our jobs just a bit easier. Thank you for taking part in
this little project.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Distribution List Problem

2007-01-15 Thread Donnie Parrett

Hey David,

I talked to my local internet provider and they told me that I needed to do one
of two things. In
this distribution list called "Friends" there are about 180 names and email
addresses. First, they
told me to check the time out setting and move it all the way to Long (which is
either 5 or 10
minutes). I can't seem to be able to find that yet, but I'm working on it.
The other thing that
they suggested was to divide my "Friends" list up into two groups. The problem
is that there are
too many names in the list for the amount of time that it is taking to get the
email out. I hope
this makes sense to you.

I am having a problem with one of my distribution lists this morning. It

When I try to send an email to the "Friends" distribution list, it gets hung

I can send everything else just fine. It only happens with this one

[JAWS-Users] Re: Distribution List Problem

2007-01-15 Thread David Ferrin

In outlook go up to the tools menu and arrow down to accounts, hit enter.
Tab over to properties and hit the space bar. Control tab until you reach
the advanced tab. Tab until you hear server time out and set it to 100% by
hitting your end key. Tab over to the apply button and hit the space bar.
Hit enter on the OK button. Then tab over to the close button and hit
enter.

Hey David,

I talked to my local internet provider and they told me that I needed to do
one of two things. In
this distribution list called "Friends" there are about 180 names and email
addresses. First, they
told me to check the time out setting and move it all the way to Long (which
is either 5 or 10
minutes). I can't seem to be able to find that yet, but I'm working on it.
The other thing that
they suggested was to divide my "Friends" list up into two groups. The
problem is that there are
too many names in the list for the amount of time that it is taking to get
the email out. I hope

this makes sense to you.

[JAWS-Users] Re: jaws and sleep mode

2007-01-15 Thread Victor Gouveia

Hi David,

Although your instructions for putting Jaws to sleep are bang on, I don't
think you've addressed Mich's problem outright.

The fact is, Mich, you'll have to find out the settings for the game you're
playing, and see if you can disable the unload Jaws command from the
settings, if that is even available.

The fact is, although you can put Jaws to sleep when you load the game, the
game will still automatically unload Jaws.

The only way I can see around this issue is if you are the one unloading
Jaws yourself instead of the game.

On the other hand, if the game is made with the blind in mind, then there
should be a setting you can configure that will allow you to disable that
feature.

Mind you, I said there should be a way to disable that feature. That does
not, I repeat, that does not mean that you'll be able to do that. If you
aren't able to do that on your own, I suggest you send off an e-mail to the
creators of the game to see if they have any solutions.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Organize favorites; help

2007-01-15 Thread Victor Gouveia

Hi Rich,

I can understand why you are asking why it would be necessary to put
favourites in different folders, and, truth be told, I was asking myself the
same question when I first became a blind computer user.

The fact is, over time, the number of favourites mount up to a substantial
amount.

For example, it's been a while since I cleaned up my favourites folder, and
I have a total of 99 items in there.

So, if I wanted to go to a bank that I access on the internet, I usually
press the letter S for the name that I labelled my bank with, that being
Scotia Bank, however, I have to press the letter S several times, as the
number of favourites I have beginning with the letter S numbers in the
twelves, so can you imagine pressing the letter S twelve times when you're
pressed for time and have to go?

The fact is, folders allow you to put similar links into one place, you
don't have to use so many keystrokes to get at the one you're looking for.

Hope this helps.

Hi Doug,
Try this:
From the start menu, and then programs, select Windows Messenger.
When messenger opens, go to the tools menu, and then options.
From this dialogue, go to the preferences tab, and uncheck the boxes
formessenger start up, and run in the background.

Tab to the okay button, and spacebar that, and then close messenger.
If you are using Outlook Express, go to tools and then options and the
general tab
and make sure that windows messenger is not checked to log-in when Outlook
Express is open.

You will have to do this in each identity you have.

Mitch,

1) Go into an application that does not silence JAWS (any application other
than IE in your case).

2) Using the +<6> key or the + keys, bring up the
configuration manager.

3) Rather than modifying the application JCF file open the FILE menu and
select OPEN"

4) Find the Internet Explorer entry and select that.

5) Now go to Set Options/Advanced" and once in this dialog uncheck the
"Sleep Mode Enable" check box.

[JAWS-Users] Speech in Control Panel

2007-01-15 Thread Vinny

When I go to control panel and activate “Speech” I receive the following
announcement:

Speech Properties

The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary engine could

not be created. Please select a different engine and/or a different audio

device.

OK

I am running Windows XP Home, IE7.0, and, Jaws 8.0.

In an attempt to remove this announcement, I unloaded SAPI 5.1 and, then,
reloaded it. No change. Next, I unloaded “Real Speak” and, then, reloaded. Still
no change.

I have functionality with all my SAPI voices but would like very much to
eliminate this announcement when entering on Speech in Control Panel.

I welcome all suggestions.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 8 problems

2007-01-15 Thread Sherry Gomes

Hi all,

I'm new to this group. I joined yesterday, hoping I might be able to find
some solutions to the crazy problems I've been having since downloading and
installing JAWS 8. let me get the system stuff out of the way first.

I have a less than a year old PC, with windows XP home, a 3. something gig
processor, 1 gig ram, 200 gig hard drive, JAWS 8 with the patch, standard
version. I use outlook 2003, *not outlook express* and I still have
internet explorer 6.

ok, so all these problems began when I installed jaws 8. I went from jaws 6
to 8, never having jaws 7 on this system.

Email:
I often use control down arrow to read or skim messages by paragraph. Now,
at least half the time, this does not work and jaws just reads the first
paragraph over and over or just says blank, blank.

2. often when I escape out of a message, there is a lag before jaws will
start talking again.

Internet:

these are the big problems

1. On many sites, ones I have used and frequently use, suddenly the virtual
cursor seems not to track correctly and I have to constantly refresh my
screen. so for instance, on my safeway.com site, when I go into forms mode
to type in an edit field, jaws no longer reads the contents of the edit
field to me, unless I go out of forms mode and do insert escape. even so,
it often totally loses focus and goes to a completely different area of the
page.

2. most of the time now, when I activate a link on a web site, jaws ...
well, it's like nothing has focus, and I have to update the screen, insert
escape, to get it to focus on the page. This is so annoying as I have to
insert escape and then tab to get out of wherever it's hanging. Drives me
nuts.

3. Also on the net, most of the time, when I do alt left arrow to go back
to a previous page, jaws does not return me to where I was, but again I'm at
a completely different part of the web site.

MSN messenger

I'm using MSN messenger 6.2 still, again, not wanting to upgrade till I know
I'm going to stick with jaws 8. Ever since installing this version of jaws,
here are my messenger problems.

1. jaws always says, status bar not visible when I use insert page down to
try to read the time a message came in or any other status.

2. I no longer hear the typing sound, though the feature is turned on, and
often I don't know someone has written something when I'm typing in a
conversation window.

In general the whole thing seems sluggish. I have not installed the extra
voices because of this, for people have told me installing those will slow
it down even more. Though I would think my system has enough ram and power
to handle it.

I consider myself a very competent jaws user and have been an access
technology instructor as well. But I am extremely frustrated with this new
JAWS and I'm considering going back to version 6.

Thanks for any tips or advice, or just commiseration!

Sherry

[JAWS-Users] Re: Getting rid of windows messenger

2007-01-15 Thread Ricque

Hi Doug,
Well, that's odd, did you check Outlook Express as I suggested?
At any rate, try the following:

From the run dialogue, type:

msconfig
When the utility opens, press control + shift + tab, to get to the startup
tab.

Look for the following entry:
msmsgs "C:\Program Files\Mes... HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer.
This item will be checked, so use the spacebar to uncheck it.
Next, tab to the apply button, and spacebaar that, then tab to the close
button and spacebar that.
You will get a message telling you that the computer needs to be restarted,
so spacebar to activate that action.
When the computer restarts, the system configuration utility dialogue will
come up
so, tab to the, don't show me this message or launch the system
configuration dialogue again checkbox, and spacebar to check it.

Next tab to the okay button, and spacebar that as well.
You are done.
NOTE:
Be very careful while in msconfig that you don't accidently uncheck, or
check anything else, as this could have unexpected results.

Let me know how it goes.

Richard Justice

Hi Sherry,

I'm on a Windows 2000 Pro system and I've had some similar problems with
JAWS 8.0. Freedom Scientific has escalated the problem I'm having to
development and it sound similar enough to your issues that I am fairly
confident that once they've resolved the problems I reported the problems
you're experiencing may well be resolved as well. However, I suggest that
you contact FS support and let them know about the additional problems.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Speech in Control Panel

This "Speech" is speech recognition software, if I understand it correctly. You need to have it installed. (I seem to have Microsoft Speech Recognizer English: 1 of 1.)

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Speech in Control Panel

 Vinny

Hey David,

I talked to my local internet provider and they told me that I needed to do
one of two things. In this distribution list called "Friends" there are
about 180 names and email addresses. First, they told me to check the time
out setting and move it all the way to Long (which is either 5 or 10
minutes). I can't seem to be able to find that yet, but I'm working on it.
The other thing that

they suggested was to divide my "Friends" list up into two groups. The
problem is that there are too many names in the list for the amount of time
that it is taking to get the email out. I hope this makes sense to you.

It sounds like you have a bad address in that particular distribution list.
Go through it and make sure that all of the addresses are correctly written
