[JAWS-Users] Re: outlook express

2007-05-21 Thread Bill Gallik

Patty,

Outlook Express is a component of Internet Explorer and not of Office.
Microsoft Outlook is the email component of Office and is remarkably
different from Outlook Express.

What you might want to try doing is to open Internet Explorer, bring up the
Tools menu and select options. Once in that multi-tab dialog move to the
Programs tab and under email setting check the list to verify if Outlook
Express has been installed with your version of IE. If it has highlight it
and then hit the OK button as that will set Outlook Express as your default
email client.

If Outlook Express does not appear in the list then you'll need to download
and install it from the Microsoft web site.

And by the way, when you go to the Run item in the Start Menu you need to
type in:

MSIMN.EXE

as that is the executable for Outlook Express.

I've been adding various programs all along here, but I wanted to point out
the couple just posted today. First an updated version of 7 zip. Second a
MP3 file splitting program called book split. I suggest it only be used for
straight voice files because it only splits by a pre determined time
interval. You have some play so far as setting that is concerned, but it
wouldn't work well for music files. I may do an audio tutorial on it as the
thing wouldn't be too tuff to do. I'd like to know if there would be any
interest in such a thing first I suppose.

Victor asks:
Uhm, how do you know that you're not receiving messages for those on your

The Block Senders list is just one more misappropriation of the English
language by Microsoft; in fact it is an Automatic Deletion list such that
any email downloaded from any of the listed sending email addresses causes
that email to be placed in the Deleted Items folder. It does not block
messages from named addressees from getting to the PC. At least this is how
it works in Outlook Express.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Directing Speech to Different Devices -- Was: jaws startup problem

2007-03-30 Thread Bill Gallik

Mark Senk wrote to me off-list with the following comment:
I thought devices meant that synthesizers would be directed to a different
sound card.

Pardon me, I mis-answered your question -- at least it wasn't directly
addressed. However, this is still done via entries in the Synthesizer
section of the JFW.INI file. Perhaps I can best answer your question by
including the two entries I have in my JFW.INI file for the Eloquence
synthesizer, I have Eloquence directed to the default sound card and
likewise to my USB Audio device via two different sets of synthesizer
entries as follows:

Synth2Name=eloq
Synth2LongName=Eloquence for JAWS
Synth2Driver=eloq
Synth3Name=eloqUSB
Synth3LongName=Eloquence via USB for JAWS
Synth3Driver=eloq
Synth3Port=USB Audio Device

NOTES:
SynthName differs in these two entries because that's the value used in the
/s switch when calling JAWS via shortcut (Run JAWS with Eloquence).
SynthLongName could be the same, but that might be confusing when selecting
the Change Synthesizer item from the JAWS Language menu selection.
SynthDriver is the same because regardless of the device, you still must
deploy the eloq driver.
SynthPort is only necessary for the alternative device and this is where you
direct your synthesizer to a specific device.

[JAWS-Users] Re: U3 Thumb Drive

2007-03-29 Thread Bill Gallik

You can pretty well bet that if the Thumb Drive is accessible via the
Windows Explorer program and other file utilization programs then JAWS will
be able to let you work with it. The truth is that JAWS is not, in any way,
accessing the Thumb Drive -- or any other drive -- the OS (Windows) and
related programs are accessing the drive and JAWS is only accessing the
Window OS user interface.

[JAWS-Users] Just Exactly What Is The Question -- Was: U3 Thumb Drive

2007-03-29 Thread Bill Gallik

I was under the impression that the original question was whether or not
this drive could be accessed using JAWS. Now I'm wondering if the question
is whether or not JAWS can be loaded on to and accessed from a Thumb Drive.
These are completely different questions because the first only refers to
how the OS will access the drive and if JAWS will be able to function within
that framework -- to which I have to say I don't understand how the answer
could possibly be negative since the file subsystem software is at such a
low level compared to the User Interfaces deployed in the Microsoft OS.
Whereas the second perspective questions if JAWS can be placed on the drive
and function properly -- and even at that I have to wonder how opening the
required files via specialized software by this drive would prevent the OS
from honoring the resource requests JAWS makes.

[JAWS-Users] Re: JAWS and two sound cards

2007-03-10 Thread Bill Gallik

Sherry,

I recommend you run all other sounds through the default sound card and
also set up an entry in the JFW.INI file to allow you to ask JAWS through
the secondary sound device. I will include the pertinent entries in my
JFW.INI file because I think that will be more clear than the abstract
explanation as how to do this:

[Synthesizers]
Synth1Name=accentsa
Synth1LongName=Accent SA
Synth1Port=Com1:9600,n,8,1,x
Synth1Driver=accentsa
Synth2Name=eloq
Synth2LongName=Eloquence for JAWS
Synth2Driver=eloq
Synth3Name=eloqUSB
Synth3LongName=Eloquence via USB for JAWS
Synth3Driver=eloq
Synth3Port=USB Audio Device

Note that the Synth#Driver=eloq entry for both the standard Eloquence and
via the secondary audio device are identical; this is because eloq is the
program that will run regardless of which device is in use. Also note that
the Synth#Port for the entries deploying the secondary audio device is
utilized and should be the exact name identified from the Audio tab of the
Control-Panel/SoundsMulti_media. This will be identified from the
Preferred Device list and must match that list entry exactly.

The Synth#Longname=__ can be anything you like, but it would be
helpful if it reflects the synthesizer and indicates that it may be the
primary or secondary audio device -- this entry is where the list of
synthesizers comes from when going into the JAWS
Languages/Change-Synthesizer menu.

The Synth#Name=__ entry is also quite open for whatever you like to
use, but remember that this value will be used in any JAWS shortcut that
will instruct JAWS which synthesizer to use. For example, the Start JAWS
with Eloquence item in the JAWS sub-menu calls for JAWS to run with the
/seloq switch in force. In other words, if you want to tell JAWS to run
with a specific synthsizer from launch you use the /s switch and the value
of the Synth#Name= entry for that particular synthesizer.

If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

HTH

[JAWS-Users] Re: Outlook and Outlook Express

2007-02-28 Thread Bill Gallik

Yes, you can have both applications installed and running at the same time,
but remember that there will likely be a contest between the two email
clients to download your email messages from your ISP. Now, you can
certainly make sure that one client (let's call it Client A) always fetches
your email before the second client (let's call this one Client B) and
likewise make sure that Client A never deletes messages after downloading
them. This way, Client A would download your messages and leave them up on
your email server for Client B to download a bit later -- and of course you
would probably want Client B to delete messages from the email server after
downloading.

Now, think about this; you have all these duplicated email messages and I
can tell you from personal experience that using two email clients for the
same account(s) does get confusing.

Another approach is to have Client A get messages from one account(s) and
Client B get email from a different account(s). The advantage of this is
that you would always know which email accounts you were getting email from
when either in Client A or Client B. But you can do this via message rules
and loading your email into separate folders.

The short answer to your question is, YES, you can have Outlook and Outlook
Express both on your system. The more appropriate question is just why
would you want to? Only you can answer that!

[JAWS-Users] Re: Dragon Naturally

2007-02-26 Thread Bill Gallik

I haven't done any actual experiments with this configuration, but it is my
understanding that the real problem attempting to run JAWS or WindowEyes
with Dragon is the resource battle on the sound card that acts as both input
and output devices. And, of course, there's the problem of Dragon hearing
JAWS or WindowEyes yammering in the background while the user attempts to
talk Dragon into doing what's desired.

I'm wondering if, by installing a secondary audio device, JAWS was
instructed to utilize the secondary audio device and the user employed
earphones that possibly Dragon and JAWS would play nice on the same
PC?!?!?  Just a thought!

I attempted to delete several folders out of Outlook Express. They did move
to the deleted folder. Now, they can not be deleted from there. Does
anybody have any suggestions as to how I can delete these folders from my
deleted folder?  Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,
I have a few questions about this timezone editor program. It says unzip
the file into your windows directory, does that mean I would move the file
into the directory and then unzip it, or would I unzip it first before I
move it? Also, where is the windows directory? I have never had to go in
there, so I don't know how to get to it. Thanks in advance to anyone who
can answer my questions!
Take care,

 Windows and Daylight Saving Time

 This issue is important if you live in the United States and have a
Windows
 PC. Because of recent rule changes, Daylight Saving Time was extended
 starting
 in 2007, and unless you make some changes, your system's clock will not be
 accurate. Unlike other problems that become a big deal when Microsoft does
 this
 or that, when this or that product is updated or discontinued, etc, this
 issue has a very specific time at which it will bite you. At 2:00 AM local
 time
 on Sunday March 11, 2007, your system's clock will be one hour slow. This
 will continue for three weeks, until the old rules call for Daylight
Saving
 Time
 to take effect, on Sunday April 1, 2007, at 2:00 AM. At that time,
 everything will be back to normal, and you will have an accurate clock
once
 again. The
 problem will resurface at 2:00 AM on Sunday October 28, 2007, when the old
 rule has Daylight Saving Time end, and last for one week, during which
time
 your system clock will be one hour fast. There will be similar periods of
 inaccuracy in future years. This document describes a way to fix this
 problem
 by editing your Windows timezone data to reflect the new changes. Windows
 Vista has these changes installed already from the factory, so you don't
 need
 to worry about this if you're running Vista. In addition, there is an
update
 for supported Windows operating systems to make these changes, but this
 method
 can be used if you don't want to bother with that. This method also works
on
 operating systems that are no longer being supported by Microsoft, such as
 Windows 95/98/98SE.

 To do this, you first need to download the timezone editor program
 here.  http://www.bluegrasspals.com/tzedit.zip
 Unzip the file into your windows directory. Now you need to run the
 tzedit.exe program from the Start, Run dialog. A window will pop up. You
 will be in
 a list of the available timezones, with your current timezone already
 selected. If you live in the United States, you will almost definitely
want
 to edit
 this timezone, so tab to the Edit button and click it. A new dialog will
 come up. Tab over to the Daylight Saving Time section, and change the
combo
 boxes for the days. Currently, the Start Day boxes will read First
Sunday
 of April, and you want to change them to Second Sunday of March.
 Likewise,
 for the Last Day combo boxes, change them from Last Sunday in October
to
 First Sunday in November. These are standard combo boxes, so arrowing
 through
 them will make all of this self-explanatory. Don't change the time edit
 boxes or anything else. Click OK to save your changes. Now Shift+Tab
over
 to
 the list of timezones and arrow until you get to another timezone you want
 to edit. For completeness, I always edit all of the US timezones. These
 include
 (GMT-05:00) Eastern (US and Canada), (GMT-06:00) Central (US and
 Canada), (GMT-07:00) Mountain (US and Canada), (GMT-08:00) Pacific (US
 and Canada);
 Tijuana, and (GMT-09:00) Alaska. You don't need to edit (GMT- 10:00)
 Hawaii, because Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time. If you live
 in
 some parts of Mexico that use US Pacific Time, the Daylight Saving Time
 dates have not changed. To deal with this, you will need to create a new
 timezone,
 set the GMT Offset to - 08:00 and use the old Daylight Saving Time dates
 described above. When you're all done, click the Close button to exit
the
 program.

 Once you've edited your timezones, you need to go into your system's
Control
 Panel, and select

Larry,

Seems to me that the Outbox is one of those standard folders that's
created when you install Outlook or Outlook Express. I have Outlook 2000
(although I do not use that email client in deference to Outlook Express)
and I too have an Outbox.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Outbox is a holdover from the
old dial-up modems where it took considerable time to get messages on to
their eventual destinations. The Outbox was (and still is so far as I can
tell) a temporary holding folder for messages on their way on to the
Internet Highway.

Carlos,

Linux/Unix systems have an application called WABI (or something like that)
that will allow the use of Windows based programs to run on a Unix or Linux
platform; this may be the source of your initial curiosity. But that won't
help with using JAWS on such platforms because JAWS would only be active
within the WABI environment -- unfortunately a subset of the processes
running on the Unix/Linux platform.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Having Trouble With A Web Site

2007-01-25 Thread Bill Gallik

The problem with this web page is that if you have JAWS running and you
enter in any of the numbers JAWS presumes that you are looking for a heading
level equivalent to the number you entered. You need to use the Pass Key
Through feature of JAWS; you do this by pressing JAWS Key+3 (on the
number pad). Then if you enter in the number of your choice the web site
will act appropriately.

I suppose there are other ways around this little glitch from JAWS such as
unloading JAWS while on this web page or putting JAWS in sleep mode but
that has other ramifications that I prefer to avoid.

2) Using the JAWS-Key+6 key or the JAWS-Key+F2 keys, bring up the
configuration manager.

3) Rather than modifying the application JCF file open the FILE menu and

4) Find the Internet Explorer entry and select that.

5) Now go to Set Options/Advanced and once in this dialog uncheck the
Sleep Mode Enable check box.

Taika,

I am sure that what Andrew means is that you close JAWS and then start it up
again. I have a similar problem as you and so when it occurs I use the
INSERT+F4 to close JAWS and the ALT+CONTROL+J hot key to restart
JAWS and everything is then fine. It usually takes about 15 seconds to
execute this maneuver, and yes I know it is annoying.

And sometimes, I just open the view menu and switch from Normal View to
Print View (or vice versa) and JAWS then begins reading the page as it
should.

I am having a problem with Word 2000. I use XP Home, JAWS 6.0, Outlook

For some reason, when I am in a Word Document, either reading one or

Maneuvering with the Say Line and JAWS cursor, I can get things done,
usually, but in a very laborious way which also wastes valuable time.

I am sure that I must have accidentally checked or unchecked some setting

[JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean?

2007-01-09 Thread Bill Gallik

Okay, we have a good idea of what a bullet is. Now the question is, why
are they used. Bullet marks -- or any non-ordering item identifier -- are
extremely visual devices to indicate that a new item in a list is following.
Identifiers such as numbers or letters might indicate some sense of priority
while a bullet simply says here's another list item among equals.

H, well, now I understand why Donnie refers to himself as Scooter! I

Hmmm, this thread is anathema to I who cannot upgrade to IE 7 because of the
version of Windows 2000 I have on my PC. I must now go purchase a new PC
with the latest version of XP Pro and I look forward to battling with the
newer technology.

2006-12-22 Thread Bill Gallik

I suspect that the problem Tammy is asking to resolve is the dynamic changes
in the web page simply by moving from item to item in the Combo box.

[JAWS-Users] Multiple Selections in an Extended List Box with IE

2006-12-19 Thread Bill Gallik

Hi,

I'm using Internet Explorer 6, JAWS 7.0 and Windows 2000 Professional.

What I've run into is a web page with an extended list box where it should
be possible to select multiple items. I'm not sure how to do this, can
anybody offer advice?

[JAWS-Users] Re: jaws with multiple sound cards

2006-12-07 Thread Bill Gallik

Dave,

In your JFW.INI file where the various synthesizer configs are recorded, did
you make a Synth#Port entry for the SAPI 5 voice you want to use?

What I've noticed with Eloquence is that the only change between having that
speak through a secondary audio device and the default device is the
addition of the SynthPort entry. It might be that doing likewise for one of
the SAPI voices would do the same.

Let us know if that helps.

Now I have got Eloquence coming out of my Audigy internal right now with
everything else running through my external Turtle Beach card. My question
since the same trick for making Eloquence doesn't work for SAPI voices is
there a trick that will work. It states in the window when I hit
control+insert+S that it should go to the Audigy but it doesn't.

[JAWS-Users] Re: jaws 8 and internet explorer

2006-12-06 Thread Bill Gallik

Leonard,

I take it from your post that you're still using IE 6? Which OS are you
running?

Here's a problem I've encountered with JAWS 8 and IE 6:

- I open IE

- I open one of several links to personal financial institutions.

- I use th e F command to move to the login prompts (i.e., User ID:).

- I turn on Forms Mode in order to fill in the requisite information

- I tab to the next field (usually Password:).

- I hear the prompt User Id: instead of Password: (or whatever it
should be).

- I tab around to other (not necessarily form fields) and continue to hear
User ID: instead of the true label for the link.

This happens only I've gone into Forms Mode, but once I do this all other
links labels are no longer read appropriately.

I'm using Windows 2000 Professional.

FS is aware of this problem and it has been escalated via a trouble ticket.

Personally, I do think FS does have their act together!

Do nothing with it. Just leave it there--it's not hurting anything and if
the operating system told you it's in use, then it's in use.
