[JAWS-Users] using Jaws with blackboard system

2007-08-30 Thread jason smith
Hi list, especially those uni students on the list. I have been having a lot of
problems accessing my uni website for my Psychology studies. The uni has began
using a thing called blackboard learning system. it uses some Java and so
obviously gives Jaws problems. Have any of the students on list been able to
master this system. I am able(with a lot of use of the Jaws cursor), able to
get into things I need to, but it is very time consuming. Have spoken to the
I.T guys at the uni. They help as much as they can, but they even say it is a
problem even for students in general, not just with Jaws.
Any tips will be helpful.
thanks Jason

Lisa,

Once JAWS 9 is released, you would then have to purchase version 9 when
you upgrade. If you order 8 now with and SMA (that means you'll also
receive 9 and version 10), you end up paying the same price and will
ultimately get version 10 as well.

So your question is, how long before 9 is released...

We have been targeting a release date in late September but that has
slipped a bit already. We are completing some significant changes with
respect to Microsoft Office including the calendar and getting this all
wrapped up is taking longer than I had hoped. Since this is delaying
JAWS 9 a bit, you will have more time to delay the purchase but I would
not let it go past September in order to take advantage of the savings.

Hope that helps,
Eric

I'm really considering upgrading because I have Microsoft office student

it with my jaws 6.

 Lisa,
The first question you (and the sales person I think) should ask, is
about your current computer situation and what will you be doing in
the
future with respect to computing. If you are on windows XP today, and
plan to be using the computer in the future, you will probably be
upgrading to IE 7 at the very least. For that reason, staying current
with your Screen Reader will be important. If you plan to buy a new
computer in the next year or two, you will probably be getting Vista
and
in that case, I suggest you buy JAWS 8 now and get the SMA. That would
give you all the features in JAWS 7 and 8 your are missing out on now
and set you up to begin using Vista as soon as you can. Purchasing
before JAWS 9 releases this Fall will say you money as well in the
long
 run.

If on the other hand you are using Windows 98 with IE 6 today, and
your
not planning to change anytime soon, then I would suggest you only get
upgraded to JAWS 6.2 (available for free to JAWS 6 license holders,
from
 the Downloads page at FS).

A couple of the highlights worth considering include:
 * Support for Vista Operating System.
 * All the DAISY Training material and the DAISY Player now installed
with JAWS 7 and 8 versions.
 * The RealSpeak Synthesizer that is included with JAWS 8, mentioned by
 others.
 * The new Alternative Say All option so you can use Eloquence for
navigating but have RealSpeak or other SAPI Synthesizer kick in when
you
 start a Say All.
 * The FS Clipboard so you can append to clipboard rather than over
writing it. This is great on Web pages I think.
 * The Check for Updates feature in the Help Menu.
 * Navigation Quick Keys for Microsoft Word, like you have available in
 IE.
 * The JAWS Find feature now retains the history of the searches you
perform to make it easier to recall.
 * AOL, MSN, and Yahoo instant messenger programs are all improved.
Well, you get the idea. If you install the Demo version of JAWS 8, you
can review all the What's New write ups, try out the DAISY Training
material, and give it a test drive at least.

 Eric Damery

 Hello everyone,
I am currently using jaws 6.0. A sails person from Freedom Scientific

 know
anyone using jaws 8.0, so I can't ask specific questions about it.

I did hear that you can use Yahoo messenger with 8.0, but I'm not

Jason and all, I have an opinion on this. If the university in question
knows darn well that Blackboard is difficult for all students, not just VI
students, then why are they using it in the first place? Couldn't they just
use Moodle or some other VLE instead? At least with Moodle JAWS can access
it no problem as there's no Java, as far as I can tell anyway. Sorry for the
ranting, but there goes my two pence worth anyway, smiles.

and set you up to begin using Vista as soon as you can. Purchasing
before JAWS 9 releases this Fall will say you money as well in the
 long

Hi Lauren,

If you don't have the latest Adobe reader, I'd recommend getting it. Once
downloaded, the instalation process will take you through an Accessabillity
assistant which will allow you to customize Adobe Reader for JAWS. The
settings are pretty much self-explanitory, for the most part.

When I'm reading a document, I usually set my options to read the entire
document at once, and navigate it like I would any other document...Works
for something like a newsletter or report, that kind of thing.

As for more in-depth navigation I don't know; try looking in Popular
Aplications With JAWS in the Help system, that should give you everything
your JAWS version can do with Adobe Reader.

Hope this helps,

Voices like that are never going to be as responsive as Eloquence no
 matter
what you do. They are just too much to process as the sample is much
 larger
than with something like Eloquence. Eloquence has a sample size of
something like 2k per second as ATT and similar voices have a 16 or 22K
 per
second sample rate. If you have a really fast pc then they work pretty
 good
but not as good as eloquence.

 Hi,

I was looking through the JAWS-Users archives and saw the recent thread on
ATT Natural Voices with JAWS; I was wondering if anyone ever figured out
best optomize the voices for JAWS?

I'm running Vista and have Mike and Crystal installed; both work but the
response time is slower then if I use Eloquense. I know that with using a
different synth things will be different; but is there anything I can do
 to
speed things up? I really like having the Crystal voice on my computer,
 and
I think it is worth it sometimes to have that good voice even though
 things
 will be slower.

 Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] *****SPAM***** Re: using Jaws with blackboard system

2007-08-30 Thread Annette Carr
I've used BlackBoard both as a student and instructor, and as a parent of an
upper elementary school child and have not had problems using it with JAWS
over the past 3 to 4 years.
However, maybe there is a new and improved version out there that is no
longer accessible.

Contacting your school's I.T. folks was a good first step, but I think it is
time to move on to the next step. If your school has an Office of
Disability Services, you need to contact them immediately so that they can
work with you and your instructor to come up with a reasonable
accommodation. You do not want to wait and let this thing snowball to the
point of it hurting you and your grade. I have 20 years of experience with
accommodations in the post secondary level. You are welcome to contact me
off list if you would like to discuss this further.
