[JAWS-Users] outlook 2000

2007-10-05 Thread David Ferrin
This is interesting or strange depending how you look at it I suppose, I have
automatic message reading turned on and it works not too bad except if there is
only a single message in a folder or it is the first message in the list. If
either of those conditions exist then I have to manually start jaws to read the
message. Has anybody else experienced this phenomena?

Re: [JAWS-Users] the jaws key j combination

2007-10-05 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Ah, this is one of the querks of the laptop layout. When you press caps lock
J, it did what the old alt j did, which is to move to and speak the prior
word. I guess to resolve this, you should change or remove the keystroke
from within Keyboard Manager and change insert j to caps lock j. Hope that
helps.

Hey all. For some reason on the laptop layout, the caps key and won't bring
up the window for the jaws context, yet insert j does. Aren't these two
keystrokes jut about identical? I know of one other instance that the
insert key is needed but I as thinking maybe the caps lock j command will be
put into effect son. I find it so much easier using that one with my left
hand versus the insert which is way up at the uppr right of the keyboard and
tricky to hol down and do other things. Hope this made some sense.

Hi,
Due to a tbi, a high school student of mine in almost totally blind and has
use of one hand. He has learned some computer basics and the use of JAWS,
though has some ways to go with this.
He has trouble because of his limited detxterity. I would like him to rely
less on his para, and hope to get some advice from someone on list here.
Somoe of the functions which require pressing two or three keys
simultaneously are the biggest problems.
I've told him I'm sure there are blind people using JAWS who have use of
just one hand, but I'd like to share any and all suggestions.
Thank you.

[JAWS-Users] Asus Laptop and Video Intercept Manager

2007-10-05 Thread Jyrki Voutilainen
** A copy of this message will be sent to the person involved. **

Hello everybody!

As a very new member of this list I would ask you sincerely what to do in
a case as follows:

A friend of mine purchased an Asus laptop after finding HP bad because the
lack of the On/Off button for the touch pad, which has been on earlier HP
models. I told him that despite the possibility to turn the touch pad on
and off from the control panel, the opportunity to do this from a physical
button also is quite important particularly for a blind user like him and
myself. So far so good, but the JAWS installation caused *serious*
problems after restarting, or trying to restart the system: it caused a
video intercept incompatibility message and a blue screen situation, and
because of loss of any sighted assistance at the moment I worsened the
situation by retrying to start the system over again. And now, very
recently before the writing moment of that message, it became clear to me
what caused the total crash of the system, which could probably have been
avoided if I'd had sighted assistance at the *critical* moment, not
afterwords.

As a first aid method I asked my friend to contact mr. Ville Lamminen,
who is working for the Finnish local dealer for JAWS at
http://www.aviris.fi/, and as a second aid method I'll send this mail to
that list, because I've *never* been in a situation like that particular
one before.

My question after the description above is simply: Should a compability
problem with the display adapter cause a situation like this? Shouldn't
the system start anyway, and shouldn't JAWS still be able to speak and
inform about the compatibility problem?

Yours sincerely,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 8 and blue screen of Death

2007-10-05 Thread David Griffith
In ;my experience blue screen are more often than not Video driver issues.

This can be very hard to correct and in the worst case scenarios I have had
to reinstall windows itself to avoid these problems.

Before this drastic step you could try the following.
1. Go to the web site of your video card manufacturer and download the
latest driver and install this. You may have to repair or reinstall Jaws
after this. Unfortunately some video driver setups and their websites may
not be fully accessible and you may need sighted help but you could have a
go.

2. If this does not work then reduce hardware acceleration on your video
card to 80%. I have found Jaws works on my system at 80% but no lower and
this can greatly reduce blue screen crashes.

To reduce hardware acceleration on XP Pro

1. Go to Control Panel
2. Go to Display
3. Press Control Tab until you get to Settings Tab.
4. Tab until you get to Advanced.
5. Control Tab until you get to Troubleshooting page.
6. Press Tab until you hear Hardware Acceleration and left right slider.
7. Use your left cursor key to reduce Hardware Acceleration to 80%.
7. Tab to OK and keep on pressing OK to close display settings.

NB some video drivers insert their own troubleshooting tab under display but
I have found it better to use the windows troubleshooting under the Advanced
tab as described above.

Can't guarantee it will work but it has helped me on some systems in the
past.

Regards

David Griffith

2007-10-05 Thread Michael A. Tisdale
I can't help with that problem but my suggestion is never, ever, ever, buy a
Dell computer. If you get a good one everything is OK, if you get a bad one
(which happens a lot) you are stuck with one that will never work correctly
and it is never their fault, and it is never covered by their warranty.

[JAWS-Users] HP and touch pad

2007-10-05 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
I am not sure why one would need to have a manual button to turn the
touch pad on and off but I would like more information on this. personally I
have thought of placing a card over the touch pad to block any accidental
activation. Any information on the manual button with HP would be
appreciated since I am looking in to buying an HP.

problem with the display adapter cause a situation like this? Shouldn't
the system start anyway, and shouldn't JAWS still be able to speak and
 inform about the compatibility problem?

 Yours sincerely,

This is not true for Outlook only Outlook express. Alt-B in outlook just beeps
at you. If you really want to not see the CC field you should be able to set
up a custom form I have never tried this but I know it would be useful for my
wife who is constantly having to put information in the reply-to field which
is only accessible via the mail properties screen normally.

Re: [JAWS-Users] corrupted filters within Microsoft outlook 2003.

2007-10-05 Thread Cohn, Jonathan C [IT]
What version of jaws are you using? You need at least Jaws 6 to have good
control over the rules wizard earlier versions require that you use the jaws
cursor in order to get full access. The delete button will be 'unavailable' if
you have no rules highlighted.

I can't help with that problem but my suggestion is never, ever, ever, buy
a
Dell computer. If you get a good one everything is OK, if you get a bad
 one
(which happens a lot) you are stuck with one that will never work
 correctly
and it is never their fault, and it is never covered by their warranty.

Here's another idea,if you have 4 5 what you could do for their hot keys
instead of alt control j, in place you could put their numbers.
This way if you want to switch between the two of them.

 Hi Rosemarie
Ok, here's the really simple way of solving this vexing little
problem, I just joined the list today but I've been following this
thread in hopes that I could be of some help. This is very easy.

 1. go to your desktop with windows key plus m, and then press the
letter j until you hear JAWS 4.51, that's the desktop shortcut which,
when you press enter on it will start JAWS 4.51.
 2. Now, if you're running JAWS 5 at the time that you do this, what
you'll need to do is shut down JAWS 5.0, restart 4.51 and make sure
that the automatically start JAWS check box is not checked. If you
uncheck the box and press the ok button you'll be asked to confirm
this, so press ok. Now, shut down version 4.51 and if you have a hot
key set up for vversion 5.0, restart that, and then make sure that
the automatically start check box *is* checked. basically we're
telling JAWS 4.51 not to run when windows starts, but we are telling
5.0 to run at startup. Actually, if I remember correctly this should
happen automatically, but if you didn't install JAWS yourself, it's
entirely possible that the person who installed it turned off the
automatically start JAWS option. so turn that option off for 4.51 and
turn it on for version 5. I do hope that makes some kind of sense and
that I've been of some kind of help.

  Rosemarie,
If you did the automatic install, then your copy of jaws 5.0 should be
  in
a folder called jaws50 on your c:\ drive.
Try typing the following in the run... box (without quotes):

  c:\jaws50\jfw.exe

Once again, I did not write quotes intentionally; copy that string
  (with
ctrl+c) and then paste it in to the run... box (with
  ctrl+v).
Btw, if you're not the only person using this computer (i e, it is
shared), checking the automatically start jaws checkbox is
  highly not recommended.
However, if you are the only one on this computer, then do not be
  afraid
  to check the above-mentioned box.
I'm also still using Jaws 5.0 and thoroughly happy and pleased with it,
like a kid in a candy store, lol!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 8 and blue screen of Death

2007-10-05 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
Hmmm! i've used dell computers since 1994 and have not had any major
issues. At present, I
own two Dell desktops and one Dell laptop, and use a Dell desktop at
work, and again, have had no major issues. I do not like the off shore
telephone tech support, but, unless you have a local guy build you a
machine, it will be a reality of life. Also, I have found that the Dell
machines have worked well with all manner of access technologies,
including screen readers, Braille displays, OCR programs, screen
magnifiers, and every peripheral device that I have ever hooked up to
it. I hate to see these sweeping generalizations. That isn't to say
that everyone is happy with their Dell machine, but that could be said
about every product ever manufactured.

I would suspect that you may have to do a complete restore using the
recovery disks that came with the computer.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Asus Laptop and Video Intercept Manager

** A copy of this message will be sent to the person involved. **

Hello everybody!

As a very new member of this list I would ask you sincerely what to do
in a case as follows:

A friend of mine purchased an Asus laptop after finding HP bad because
the lack of the On/Off button for the touch pad, which has been on
earlier HP models. I told him that despite the possibility to turn the
touch pad on and off from the control panel, the opportunity to do this
from a physical button also is quite important particularly for a blind
user like him and myself. So far so good, but the JAWS installation
caused *serious* problems after restarting, or trying to restart the
system: it caused a video intercept incompatibility message and a blue
screen situation, and because of loss of any sighted assistance at the
moment I worsened the situation by retrying to start the system over
again. And now, very recently before the writing moment of that message,
it became clear to me what caused the total crash of the system, which
could probably have been avoided if I'd had sighted assistance at the
*critical* moment, not afterwords.

As a first aid method I asked my friend to contact mr. Ville Lamminen,
who is working for the Finnish local dealer for JAWS at
http://www.aviris.fi/, and as a second aid method I'll send this mail
to that list, because I've *never* been in a situation like that
particular one before.

My question after the description above is simply: Should a compability
problem with the display adapter cause a situation like this? Shouldn't
the system start anyway, and shouldn't JAWS still be able to speak and
inform about the compatibility problem?

Yours sincerely,

--

[JAWS-Users] Jaws working with TV tuners?

2007-10-05 Thread Carliss
Listers,
I need a TV tuner other than Windows Media Center, that works with Jaws,
does that exist? I sure hope so, I really need a Tv tuner. I will use USB
or PCI but I would like some one to explain the difference in the functions.

Thanks to all,

Hi, Jason. I tried the suggestion but jaws 4.51 still comes up. I
remember
doing the automatic install when I installed jaws 5.0. I'm the only one
using this computer. Is there something else I can try? Thanks.

  Rosemarie,
If you did the automatic install, then your copy of jaws 5.0 should be
  in
a folder called jaws50 on your c:\ drive.

[JAWS-Users] JAWSBeta JAWS 9.0.356 Private Beta is available!

2007-10-05 Thread Eric Damery
Hello Private Beta Testers,

JAWS Private Beta Build 9.0.356 is ready for testing. This one includes quite a
bit of change since the 353 build because we have been fixing items that were
held out of the public beta builds as we attempted to stabilize it as best we
could. The next update we do for the public will be in about 10 days or so I
hope. Your attention to this list of fixes is greatly appreciated.

The Known issues is empty today. Rosemary and Stephen are both off sipping
Margaritas somewhere so we are not as professional in the write up as we'd like
to be.

Special note: The Red Sox are going for game two tonight at 8:30 ET and the
Yankees will be going for their second loss on Saturday!

 Regards,

Eric

JAWS Private Beta Build 9.0.356 is ready for testing.

JAWS 9.0 Update

An update is provided for your convenience as well as to continue with some
level of testing of the update process during the beta cycle. Not all builds
provided during the beta cycle will have the update option. As the product
progresses, some builds will be new BASE BUILDS upon which subsequent updates
can be installed. The Automatic Update will update to JAWS 9.0.356 from the
following prior builds:

* 9.0.353 Base Build or Update.

*   9.0.348 Base Build.

Attempts to update to 9.0.356 from any build other than what is listed will
fail by design. If in doubt or you have trouble, simply use the full install
instead. Updates are not yet available for Windows Vista, and are not available
for Windows 2000; you need to download and install the full version.

* Update Patch:

1. Please enter 90909 into the special code dialog in the JAWS about box
dialog. Go to the Help Menu, About. TAB to the special access code button and
press ENTER. Type or paste 90909 into the edit field.
2. Select check for updates on the JAWS UI help menu. You will find
today's 9.0.356 in the list box.
3. TAB to your choice and proceed with installation.

* Update Tip: How do you check to see if a listed update will update my
installed version of JAWS?

If you navigate the list of updates and highlight one of the listed updates you
can TAB to the detail button and press spacebar to get a list of the versions
of JAWS which can be updated by that particular update.

* If the Update fails:

Either Repair or install the full build, if available: Check out the FAQ: How
do I perform Installation Maintenance procedures like Repair and Modify?
http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_support/BulletinView.cfm?QC=1057

NOTES

*   JAWS 9.0 beta will expire December 1, 2007.
* For those who are testing the Outlook Calendar work: to test the
calendar, you need to disable the Task List option in View, To Do, menu.
ALT+V to drop the View menu, then select the To Do Bar sub menu, then
uncheck the Task List option.
* MAGic and JAWS private beta testers: We are working on testing a
combination here in-house, and on getting you a new MAGic 11 Public beta
candidate, that will function with the JAWS public beta. While you are free to
install both JAWS 9.0 beta and MAGic 11 private beta together, we still don't
recommend attempting to run them together
* JAWS 9.0 will be a paid upgrade, requiring authorization for JAWS 9.0.
The flag is not set yet; 8.0 authorization will enable you to run JAWS 9.0
beta.
* Please review the Known Problems section and refrain from posting
reports on those defects listed.
* Please save these announcements during the cycle for reference or to
help answer questions; each list of new features and fixes is unique to each
build you'll receive.
* This is a beta product; it is prerelease quality. It is recommended
that you back up your system prior to installing 9.0.
* If you install JAWS 9.0 on a system with JAWS 8.0, JAWS 8.0 will use
the 9.0 shared components.
*   The Private Beta Handbook
ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/beta/PrivateBetaHandbook.htm
is available as a separate web page for reference.

NEW FEATURES and CHANGES

* 33586 Change in output message when No window is active.
* 33880 We have now added a link to the Adjust JAWS Options dialog
JAWSKey+v to the JAWSKey+F2 Run JAWS Manager to make it easier for new users
to find the options.
* 34126 Extra Help Indication option is now called F1 formfield help
indication as in prior versions of JAWS.(Brian Hartgen) .
* 34127 F1 automatic help text reading now speaking after the status bar
help text for Word Forms (Brian Hartgen).
* 34179 Powerpoint 2007 now improved in areas other than edit.
(Kelly Ford) .
* 34190 SayAll mode is now persistent with Microsoft Outlook 2007.
* 34171 Insert+F1 and Hotkey Help for Outlook 2007 Calendar support
updated.

Hello all listers. I am wondering weather some people from this list can
please do me a favor. I have a friend of mine her name is Kimmey who has
created
a web page and it is
http://www.lovingexpressions.net/joomla/
Now she has created a chat room with a program cald UTchat This chat room
doesn't seem to be to blind user friendly where jaws is concerned when it
comes
to chatting that is why I am thinking that some jaws scripting might be in
order to make this chat accessible for the blind people. my friend is not
blind
her self but she is trying to make this sight as accessible for blind people
as possible. Could some one please E Male her or better yet go to the sight
and assess it for it's accessibility? or possibly maybe help her out with
scripting if it needs to be dun where jaws is concerned and making the web
sight
accessible? Her I Male to contact her is

Well, I guess I blew this one.

It has been a long week. This message was sent in error to the JAWS users
list instead of the Freedom Scientific Private Beta List. I apologize.
Please disregard and do not ask about the where the file is now or how to
get this update, we have removed them from these locations.

We will be getting a new public beta update out once we complete work and
testing on the next round of fixes over the next 10 days.

Hello Private Beta Testers,

JAWS Private Beta Build 9.0.356 is ready for testing. This one includes
quite a bit of change since the 353 build because we have been fixing items
that were held out of the public beta builds as we attempted to stabilize it
as best we could. The next update we do for the public will be in about 10
days or so I hope. Your attention to this list of fixes is greatly
appreciated.

The Known issues is empty today. Rosemary and Stephen are both off sipping
Margaritas somewhere so we are not as professional in the write up as we'd
like to be.

Special note: The Red Sox are going for game two tonight at 8:30 ET and the
Yankees will be going for their second loss on Saturday!

 Regards,

Eric

JAWS 9.0 Update

An update is provided for your convenience as well as to continue with some
level of testing of the update process during the beta cycle. Not all builds
provided during the beta cycle will have the update option. As the product
progresses, some builds will be new BASE BUILDS upon which subsequent
updates can be installed. The Automatic Update will update to JAWS 9.0.356
from the following prior builds:

* 9.0.353 Base Build or Update.

* 9.0.348 Base Build.

Attempts to update to 9.0.356 from any build other than what is listed will
fail by design. If in doubt or you have trouble, simply use the full install
instead. Updates are not yet available for Windows Vista, and are not
available for Windows 2000; you need to download and install the full
version.

* Update Patch:

1. Please enter 90909 into the special code dialog in the JAWS about box
dialog. Go to the Help Menu, About. TAB to the special access code button
and press ENTER. Type or paste 90909 into the edit field.
2. Select check for updates on the JAWS UI help menu. You will find today's
9.0.356 in the list box.
3. TAB to your choice and proceed with installation.

* Update Tip: How do you check to see if a listed update will update my
installed version of JAWS?

If you navigate the list of updates and highlight one of the listed updates
you can TAB to the detail button and press spacebar to get a list of the
versions of JAWS which can be updated by that particular update.

* If the Update fails:

Either Repair or install the full build, if available: Check out the FAQ:
How do I perform Installation Maintenance procedures like Repair and Modify?
http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_support/BulletinView.cfm?QC=1057

NOTES

* JAWS 9.0 beta will expire December 1, 2007.
* For those who are testing the Outlook Calendar work: to test the calendar,
you need to disable the Task List option in View, To Do, menu.
While you are free
to install both JAWS 9.0 beta and MAGic 11 private beta together, we still
don't recommend attempting to run them together
* JAWS 9.0 will be a paid upgrade, requiring authorization for JAWS 9.0. The
flag is not set yet; 8.0 authorization will enable you to run JAWS 9.0 beta.
* Please review the Known Problems section and refrain from posting reports
on those defects listed.
* Please save these announcements during the cycle for reference or to help
answer questions; each list of new features and fixes is unique to each
build you'll receive.
* This is a beta product; it is prerelease quality. It is recommended that
you back up your system prior to installing 9.0.
