Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS does not read ...

2007-12-30 Thread S Farwaneh
Hi Brian,

Thanks again. I ended up reinstalling Jaws and that fixed the unknown
script problem. The use of left and right arrows in the edit field of
the save and find dialogue boxes is still the same; cursor moves but
Jaws stays silent. Thank you for offering to help off list; I'll do
some reading and contact you privately if I come out empty-handed.

many thanks,
Samira

What I was trying to tell you about the toolbars is not just to see if the

checked that could be interfering with JAWS reading commands in dialog

If you are getting unknown function errors then perhaps you accidentally
typed something else into the script file before compiling it. If you are
not using any custom scripts then at this point I would suggest that you do
a JAWS repair. Insert your installation CD into the CD drive. You should
be presented with options to modify, repair or remove. If you installed
from a downloaded file and don't have your installation CD then find the
downloaded installation file on your computer and press enter on it. Make
sure you tab to the repair button and press spacebar on it, or if you are
working with some one using a mouse then have them click on the repair
button. Let JAWS repair your installation. When the repair is finished you
should restart your computer. This is probably the best thing for you to do
at this point, as if you are not familiar with script files then you
wouldn't know what statements to change to stop the unknown function
errors.

Take care. You can e-mail me off list if you would like and I'll try to
help you further. If you want to do that then instead of replying to this
message just press enter on my E-mail link below. If that doesn't work then
select my E-mail address below and copy it to the clipboard, and then paste
it in the To field of a new message.

  Thanks for the hints.
  1. I checked the view menu and both standard and formatting are checked.
  2. I opened the script manager and pressed control s; it said
compiling complete; but now I get strange messages like unknown
script called to tab key and unknown function called to
getwordversion; I tried undue script but without success. How can I
return to the default script settings?
I realize I need to learn more about jaws scripts.

 1. Check to see if the position of a toolbar or the task pane might be
interfering with the dialog box window. You might want to go under view
menu and turn off task pane or in the view menu look under the toolbars
 menu
to see if any toolbars are active that might be interfering. Be sure to
leave the standard and formatting toolbars checked.

 2. There are script statements and functions in the Microsoft Word.JSS
 file
relevant to the Find dialog box. You might want to open the script
 manager
from within Word by pressing Insert-F2, then S until you hear Script
Manager, and then press enter. When the Microsoft Word.JSS file is open
 you
might want to use CTRL-S to recompile the scripts.

 3. See if there are any external dialog boxes open when you are trying to
use the find dialog or SaveAs dialog. If so, try closing them.

 Take care.

   Hi Brian,

Thanks for your response; insert 2 changes typing mode which I
usually set to none. I should have made my question more clear so let
me try again: when I am in save or find dialogue boxes, I cannot read
characters with right or left arrows, but can read the full word with
insert up arrow. this did not happen with earlier versions of Jaws. I
do not want to hear characters when I type, but want to read
characters with right and left arrows for editing purposes. Someone
suggested checking the language settings, but it is set to English
U.S. This happens only in MS Word, not in IE, Eudora or Adobe
   Acrobat. Any ideas anyone?

   Thanks,

you have to just keep tabbing. I use the tab key a lot in media player,

Re: [JAWS-Users] having trouble with start page of avg

2007-12-30 Thread jason smith
Hi Orhan and Chris,
yes I know that a lot of people use avg without any trouble, but for some
reason it isn't working as should for me. Yes Orhan, it was the same pod
cast we both listened to. Thanks for your tip about using the space bar. The
problem is, I am not getting any of those buttons(or any others for that
matter) showing up. I have tried tabbing. I have also routed the pc cursor
to Jaws, but do not find any buttons. Jaws does confirm that it is avg 7.5
free that I am using. The only thing Jaws reads is a lot of unnamed
graphics. It reports my last scan and last update as yesterday, which is
when I installed it. As far as I know though, no such scan has been done. It
then talks about things like premium updates not being available. This makes
sense, as it is only the free version and not the paid one. It then gives a
rundown as to why it is worth upgrading to the paid version. That is all
that Jaws reads to me on the screen after I launch avg from my desktop.
Something else I notice, is that when I installed avg, I was asked to create
a start window folder. However, I don't have an avg shortcut icon in my
start menu. Avg also does not show up in my system tray, and yet I think the
manual or the podcast said it would be there.
Does anyone have any solutions, short of reinstalling AVG?
thanks Jason

 no me neither.
the demo you are talking about was from blind cool tech? a little while
 ago.
yeah, I listened to that, how ever, in the paid version there is a
 advanced
 interface.
however, this does not apply to the free version.
also, you have to press space bar on a button - enter won't work for some
 weird reason.
 well at least for me.
oh yeah if you want to scan for viruses, you need to press spacebar on the
 test centre button.
I am also running jaws on a XP machine and having no difficulties what so
 ever.

Hi, I've not had any problems using the free AVG with both JAWS 8 and
JAWS 9 running on both XP and Vista respectively. Thought I'd let you
 know.

Hi list,
I have just installed AVG 7.5 free. The install was successful.
However, when I launch avg from my desktop and get put into its
start screen(or what ever it is called), I don't get any options to
scan etc. It reports my last scan and update, as being today(which
is when I installed it). But that's all I get, apart from a notice
saying why I should update to the paid version. I listened to a
tutorial on AVG by Daren Duff on blind cool tech. In his demo, he
shows that on the start screen, I should be able to tab through
various options. These include: scan whole system, search for
updates, selective scan(or something like that) and others. I have
none of these when I press tab. In fact, I don't move any where when
I press tab. Daren's demo is with AVG 7.1 paid version, but should
it be any different? Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I am
using XP home and Jaws 8.

[JAWS-Users] Append Clipboard Feature

2007-12-30 Thread Denny Huff
I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem with the append
clipboard feature with Jaws 9.
I can append copied text to the clipboard and then copy that text.
However, when I try `to overwrite the contents of the clipboard by doing the
control c, I get the normal message saying, pressing control c or control x
will overwrite the content of the clipboard, do you want to continue. I say
yes, but when I go to paste the clipboard, the original text is pasted and
it hasn't been overwritten.
The only thing I can do is to unload Jaws 9 and then restart it.
Any suggestions, or am I the only one having this problem?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Video intercept manager trouble

2007-12-30 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.

I had this same problem with a laptop. I sent a detailed question to JAWS
Tech-Support, and I got back a very helpful answer. The solution was very
complicated, and I could not have made the changes I needed to make without
assistance from a Techie.

Try submitting a written question rather than simply talking to someone on
the phone. Be sure to give an exact description of what type and model of
computer you are using and an exact description of the operating system.

Yes, I, too, have this problem. Sometimes the append feature works as it
should; sometimes I get the problem you describe. There doesn't seem to be a
consistent pattern. It's completely random.

I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem with the append
 clipboard feature with Jaws 9.
I can append copied text to the clipboard and then copy that text.
However, when I try `to overwrite the contents of the clipboard by doing
the
control c, I get the normal message saying, pressing control c or control
x
will overwrite the content of the clipboard, do you want to continue. I
say
yes, but when I go to paste the clipboard, the original text is pasted and
 it hasn't been overwritten.
The only thing I can do is to unload Jaws 9 and then restart it.
Any suggestions, or am I the only one having this problem?

 Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Video intercept manager trouble

2007-12-30 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Nicole,

Here is a technical support notice published a few years ago by Freedom
Scientific, but I think the steps should still be the same. I realize that
DCM has greatly improved since the publishing of the tech article, but it
shouldn't hurt to follow the procedure to see if it helps. If after
following the steps shown in the notice you still have the video intercept
problem, I would suggest that you uninstall the Freedom Scientific video
intercept entry in the add/remove programs of the control panel. After
doing so, do a repair on JAWS.

Details of Selected Bulletin
Bulletin Type: TSN
Date Posted: 08/01/2003

Product Name: JAWS

Version: Any

Category: Video

Short Description:
When starting JAWS or MAGic, a message indicates that the application is not
intercepting video. The program was working fine until recently.

Problem:
If you change your video display driver after you have already installed a
Device Chaining Manager (DCM)-reliant product such as JAWS or MAGic, the
program will be temporarily disabled. This is expected behavior for
DCM-reliant products and is easy to resolve.

Note: Your video drivers may have been changed for any number of reasons,
including the following:
* You may intentionally change your display driver due to an upgrade or new
display adapter.
* The Windows Automatic Update service may download updated display drivers
for you to install.
* Your computer's manufacturer may have updated drivers which are
automatically installed without your knowledge. Updates may come from Dell
or Sony, for instance.

This notice applies to Windows NT, 2000, or XP environments. For more
information about DCM, you can read the Microsoft article An Introduction
to Driver Chain Manager.

Solution:
Follow these steps to make JAWS or MAGic function correctly after receiving
the video intercept error. You can use Windows Narrator and/or Magnifier (if
available) to assist you in performing these steps. Press WINDOWS Key+U to
access these utilities

1. In the dialog box that informs you about the video intercept problem,
choose the Details button.
2. Use the arrow keys to select the Install Video Intercept radio button.
3. Press the TAB key to move to the Execute button, and then press the
SPACEBAR.
4. Press ALT+F4 to close the Video Intercept dialog box.
5. Restart your computer. JAWS and MAGic should now work correctly.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Flash Player

2007-12-30 Thread Benjamin Hawkes-Lewis
1. What web browser are you using (and what version)? Different browsers
use different flavors of the Flash plugin.

2. What version of JAWS are you using? Different versions have different
levels of support for the Flash accessibility feature set.

3. Precisely which sub-version of Flash Player 9 are you using? There
are substantial differences between the sub-versions of Flash Player 9.
9.0.115.0 is the latest version. If you have JavaScript enabled, you
should be able to determine what version you have using this page:

http://www.codegeek.net/flash_version.htm

Otherwise, you'd need to check in about:plugins for Firefox or Manage
Add-Ons for Internet Explorer.

4. Can you please provide the URL for the webpage containing this video?
Not all Flash content is usable with screen readers, since some Flash
content does not make use of the accessibility feature set and some
other Flash content may make use of the accessibility feature set but is
embedded in the page in such a way that assistive technology cannot
inspect or interact with it.

An important point to note is that your JAWS might be configured to
Ignore Flash on Web Pages. You'll want to ensure that option isn't
checked. In JAWS 8.0, you can find it the HTML Options Dialog accessible
from the Set Options menu in Configuration Manager.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Seeking Easy to Use Accessible Dictionary

2007-12-30 Thread Flor Lynch
They need to have some savvy of JAWS anyway, to use a good or a reasonable
dictionary 'with JAWS'. (There is a stand-alone talking dictionary program
on the market, whose name eludes me at the moment.) . WordWeb

www.wordweb.com

is a quite standard dictionary/thesaurus that works well with JAWS. There
are several
easily accessed on-line dictionaries that also work well with JAWS. Among
those,
www.dicttionary.com/
is pretty comprehensive.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Append Clipboard Feature

2007-12-30 Thread lawrence taylor
Hi denny,

I dug up some notes from my personal jaws archives regarding the discussion
of the clip board we had n thisl ist a bit over a year ago. I know your
issue is with jaws9, but perhaps the notes might shed light on some thing
you've over look.

** from david.

There is a third party called clip clear that will do this very thing for
you. It can be found at:

http;//www.moonsoftware.com

** from walt.

Okay, here's the official deal that I got from FS:

* You should be prompted when you press CTRL+C _after_ having used Windows

Key+C (the FS clipboard function).

* You should not be prompted after having used CTRL+C when you first press

Windows Key+C.

3. It is normal to have anything you placed on the clipboard by way of

CTRL+C retained when you then press Windows Key+C. The FS clipboard has

never overwritten material previously placed on the clipboard by way of

CTRL+C.

* from walt.

Well, it's _sort_ of different. The keystroke to add things to the

FSClipboard is Windows Key+C instead of CTRL+C and its really big advantage

is that it allows you to make multiple clips; that is, you can copy a few

lines, go farther down in a document and copy a few more, etc. Then, when

you press CTRL+V to paste the information, everything you copied is there.

Next time, use CTRL+C for the _first_ copy, then Windows Key+C or if you

don't, everything you copied the last time will still be there. Pressing

CTRL+C after having used the Windows Key+C function prompts you to clear the

clipboard for the next bunch of material.

* from walt.

There are two clipboards. There's the regular one (CTRL+C or CTRL+X) and

there's the FS clipboard introduced, I think, in 7.0 (Windows Key+C). Here's

the information from the JAWS help about the FS clipboard:

Using FSClipboard

FSClipboard extends the functionality of the Windows Clipboard. When you use

the Windows Copy (CTRL+C) or Cut (CTRL+X) commands to place text on the

Clipboard, it replaces any text already there. When using the FSClipboard

feature, text that you copy is added to any text that you have previously

copied to the Clipboard. This allows you to continue adding text to the

Clipboard until you are ready to paste it into a document. You can only copy

text with the FSClipboard feature.

To add text to the Clipboard, select it using the text selection commands,

and then press WINDOWS Key+C. The text is appended to the end of any text

already on the Clipboard. To paste all the text that you have placed on the

Clipboard so far, use the Windows Paste command (CTRL+V). The text is

inserted into your document at the current location of the cursor. Each

block of text that you copied is separated by a blank line.

Note: If you attempt to add the same selection of text to the Clipboard more

than once, the text is not added. This feature is intended to reduce

unintentional duplication.

All formatting is removed from text that you copy using the FSClipboard

feature. This can be useful in programs like Microsoft Word if you do not

want to include styles, numbering, and other formatting information when you

paste text into a document.

If you want to replace all of the text on the Clipboard with a new text

selection, use CTRL+C or CTRL+X instead of WINDOWS Key+C. JAWS asks if you

want to overwrite your previously saved items. Choose Yes to replace all the

text on the Clipboard with the new selection.

As the notes suggest, I do use the control c to copy the first instance to
the clipboard and then the windows key c for each after that. However, when
I do another control c, it should overwrite the content of the clipboard,
but it doesn't.

3. It is normal to have anything you placed on the clipboard by way of

CTRL+C retained when you then press Windows Key+C. The FS clipboard has

never overwritten material previously placed on the clipboard by way of

CTRL+C.

Pressing

CTRL+C after having used the Windows Key+C function prompts you to clear
CTRL+the

clipboard for the next bunch of material.

* from walt.

Hi, open start, programmes (or all programmes), JAWS (version),
explore JAWS, and explore my settings, where version is the actual

 1. Check to see if the position of a toolbar or the task pane might be

to see if any toolbars are active that might be interfering. Be sure to
leave the standard and formatting toolbars checked.

 2. There are script statements and functions in the Microsoft Word.JSS file
relevant to the Find dialog box. You might want to open the script manager
from within Word by pressing Insert-F2, then S until you hear Script
Manager, and then press enter. When the Microsoft Word.JSS file is open you
might want to use CTRL-S to recompile the scripts.

 3. See if there are any external dialog boxes open when you are trying to
use the find dialog or SaveAs dialog. If so, try closing them.

Thanks for your response; insert 2 changes typing mode which I
usually set to none. I should have made my question more clear so let
me try again: when I am in save or find dialogue boxes, I cannot read
characters with right or left arrows, but can read the full word with

do not want to hear characters when I type, but want to read

   Hello All
I have JAWS 8 and for some reason when I am in save or find
dialogues, Jaws reads the entire word I type but not character by
character, which makes it difficult to make corrections. My sighted
husband said he can see the cursor moving but Jaws will not read
the character where the cursor is. This is a new problem I did not
have before with earlier Jaws versions. I went to the verbosity
dialogue and turned different options on and off but nothing worked.
I tried the configuration manager as well and without success. Any
idea what the cause may be? I have also checked the regional and
language settings in the control panel and made sure everything is
set to English U.S. Anything else I can try?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Seeking Easy to Use Accessible Dictionary

2007-12-30 Thread Victor Gouveia
AS Flor already pointed out, Word Web dictionary does have a very good Jaws
interface, and even better interface when used with the Jaws scripts
available through the Jaws Users site, or the JFW Lite site.

The newest version of the Word Web dictionary even has the ability to reside
in your system tray for easy access, and allows for a user defined hotkey to
bring it up automatically.

It will even work in conjunction with other word processors for quick and
easy access.

The great thing is that if you highlight a word, then use the hotkey, which
is control+alt+W, which is the default for accessing the dictionary, the
word will automatically appear in the edit field to look up the word.

There are a few tabs when the word is defined, such as a synonyms tab, along
with an antonyms tab/section in case you want to use the thesaurus part of
the program

The other great thing about this program is the fact that it's free.

Can't argue with that price. Smile.

This recommendation for a hotkey program just came to me from a list member who
will remain anonymous, but I'll quote the relevant part of his message to me

I have used this hot key creator for several years. It not only does a lot more
than winkey, including auto type text and many others. It's regular price is
$24.99, on sale now until tomorrow for $9.99. I thought this is worth posting
as this one also is still being supported, updated, and supports vista. Here is
a link, all one needs to do is look for the heading for pc keyboard hotkeys pro.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Video intercept manager trouble

2007-12-30 Thread Ryan MacIsaac
Hi,

This may or may not solve the problem. I had a similar problem a couple of
months ago using Jaws 8. There was a video intercept error and I could not
re-install or uninstall the video intercept manager. After following various
steps outlined in the knowledge base articles and uninstalling and
reinstalling Jaws on my system, I had to call Freedom Scientific to resolve
the problem.

For whatever reason, there are some dll files that are not registered
properly and I had to go in to the registry and delete many keys. I also had
to manually register a number of dll files to correct the problem. Since I
was doing this over the phone with a support technician, I did not have the
time to record all the steps that were taken.

According to the support technician I spoke with, it seems this is a known
problem that sometimes occurs. It may take a call to Freedom Scientific to
finally correct the problem.

Take care.

I'm having with my video intercept manager. It keeps asking for install
after I reboot my windows xp desktop. I have i intell. I just had a new
driver installed, thinking that would solve the issue, since that is what
Freedom scientific told me to do. It didn't help. I'm running Jaws 8.

Thanks Deb. I don't recall having a problem with it version 8, but it seems
to consistently happen in version 9.
There has to be some factor in the equation that causes it not to work at
times and work good at other times.
I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this problem.
Thanks for your input.
