[JAWS-Users] Early Impressions of the New JAWS 10
Hi all, I wish to tell you my early impressions of JAWS 10. It seems very good so far, and I'm liking the new features, for example autoforms mode and RealSpeak Solo Direct support. However, I have some comments as well. 1. RealSpeak Solo Direct: it seems to be sluggish when I type. Is this normal behaviour of RealSpeak, or is this a beta issue and therefore should be reported. This sluggishness does not happen with Eloquence. 2. Confusion surrounding Run JAWS with No Speech check box: according to the help, it said that the option has been removed from the advanced options dialogue box in Configuration Manager. I in fact do not recall ever seeing a Run JAWS with No Speech option anywhere in Configuration Manager. What I do see though is the Sleep Mode Enable check box. Perhaps I'm missing something, but how does one silence JAWS 10 for programmes like OpenBook? Or is this sleep mode option only been removed from default.jcf. If so, this makes sense, as who would want JAWS to go to sleep for all applications, apart from Braille-only users or maybe Magic users. 3. Problem starting earlier versions of JAWS: I have JAWS 9.0.2169 installed on this system. Since installing JAWS 10 I've only been able to switch to JAWS 9 about once or twice, the other times it sort of loads but I don't get any feedback. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Otherwise, I think that's all the comments for now. I look forward to your comments and feedback. [JAWS-Users] Audio Drivers and JAWS
Hello everyone, Last August I posted and reported having problems with Eloquence sluggishness when using JAWS 8.0 under Windows Vista. I reported that upgrading my audio drivers to the latest version of the Realtech High Definition driver fixed the problem. Well, that wasn't what actually happened. I went to do the same thing yesterday when I noticed RealSpeak Solo Direct (I sure wish someone from FreedomScientific would designate it's shorthand name RSD, it's so much less to type) and followed the uninstaller directions. The directions told me that when my computer restarted, the driver would be removed, and to run setup again. Great. So no speech, I thought. I restarted my computer, realizing that I would probably have to wait until my mother returned home before I could complete the process. To my surprise, however, JAWS still came up and I had speech! It turned out that when I uninstalled the Realtech driver, a Microsoft driver automaticly became the default. Last year I didn't pick up on that, probably because I had sighted assistance for the installation because I thought I needed it. But when speech came up last year, I never actually went ahead and installed the new Realtech driver; I just used the Microsoft driver. I am going to install the new Realtech driver and will let you know what happens, although I think I'm going to have the same problem I did earlier. Re: [JAWS-Users] Copying Text within a Flash Movie Object
Don, Were you yusing JAWS9 for this? Or version 10? I believe there's a problem with the last update of JAWS9 wherein it won't copy certain text including that from Adobe (ShockWave, etc.) If you have an earlier version fof JAWS, try copying with it. (I found that copy ctrl-c was 'unavailable' using JAWS9 the few lines with the url after the embed button where I tried it. - Original Message - From: Donald Marang [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, August 26, 2008 1:44 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Copying Text within a Flash Movie Object I was trying to copy several long lines of text within a Flash movie on a web page. Well y'all I went and dun it. I think so far so good, knock on wood here...all is doing pretty good, finger's are crossed and toes too. I think I figured out why I couldn't wrap my mind around the fact of installing this way verses the disk method, I do think it's much faster. Thank God, I had enough sense this time, to not assign a hot key the same as a older version of jaws like I did before... Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 9U Installed
Oh I'm liking this version... Some really good improvements from 8 already and I haven't went to all my apps yet, but just in OE it's fantastic! Now why did I wait so long? I only intended to install this strictly for upgrading to AVG 8 as it has to be better than the 7.5 which I hate with a passion. Well what a very nice surprise at least I'm finding it so with how jaws is responding very favorably, a big 2 thumbs up FS! I liked the verbosity feature just for using here in OE, how when or if not making any changes, you can tab once and read what that item does. That is so cool. If that was available all along, I never had access to it,lol Ok enough of my ramblings..I have some downloads to do. There is much to be said on FS part if your entitled to those SMA updates and all that, you don't have to look around for that mile long authorization number. If your entitled to the upgrade, the number is right there, woohoo. Re: [JAWS-Users] question about installing windows servis pack 3
Hi Mich, While I agree that installing most Windows Updates are essential to running a safe and well functioning machine, that's not always the case. Although, I'm sure that the release of service pack 3 into the mix was done for a reason, not simply as a convenience for it's users. After all, when have you ever known good old Bill to do anything for his customers. I'm sure there are updates that are not included in the previous updates in that service pack, as when you go to update your computer, the size of the service pack is only something like 17 megabytes, not the 200 or something the entire pack is from the download site. This essentially means that there are updates, assuming you've kept your computer relatively up to date until now, over and above those that have already been released. As you've seen, and I can confirm this on my system, and a few others I've installed for people, I and those other people have had no problems running service pack 3, and have found no distinction between one and the other. Now, and I need you to listen to this next part closely, Mich old friend, this is your computer we're talking about. Get me? Your computer has demonstrated that if it can go wrong, it will, and I'm not putting you or your computer down, well, I may be, a little, smile, but even you have to admit that you haven't had the best of luck with a computer, and that's a harsh truth we have to face in making this decision, so you have to ask yourself, if you're prepared for the possible problems that may arise out of running service pack 3, and you better make sure you have a back up plan, should things go wrong for you. On the other hand, you may find that service pack 3 runs perfectly fine on your computer, and you can't even think of what you were so afraid of. Well, until you have another problem with Outlook Express. LOL. In any case, you're the only one that can make this decision, but what ever decision you make, I'll be here if you need me. You have my contact info. Good luck. Re: [JAWS-Users] Copying Text within a Flash Movie Object
I was using version 9.0.2169. Now that I have 10 beta, I tried again with IE 7. It still does not work for me. Even the Copy item in the Edit menu is unavailable. I have since also tried this in Firefox 3.0.1. It works in both JAWS 9.0.2169 and 10 beta using Control c! However, the Copy item is unavailable from the Edit menu in both cases. Perhaps this is never intended to work and I just lucked out! Also in Outlook 2007, when navigating through any type of text with the arrow keys, JAWS does not accurately read where focus currently is. Re: [JAWS-Users] Installing Jaws Question
Hi Linda, That is possible, but not always the case. I have installed Jaws from cd, while running a different version of Jaws at the same time. When the installer starts, Jaws switches to the version being installed. On the other hand, if you are using a different screen reader not from Freedom Scientific, you do need to close it. You are so correct in what you say here... [JAWS-Users] Real Speak Solo Voices Raising Pitch for Capital Letters
I know that it was impossible with the SAPI 5 Real Speak voices and JAWS 9 to control the pitch of the voice to indicate a capital letter. But I was very hopeful when I heard FS wrote direct drivers for these voices in version 10 for more control over the voice! [JAWS-Users] JAWS speaks Winamp title bar when it shouldn't
HI all. I'm using Winamp version 5.54 on my new Vista lap top. I installed it with the classic skins (the only alternative I could find other than modern skins). I've noticed that whenever I skip from track to track using the letter b in this latest version, JAWS automatically announces the title bar (if that's what it's called). In other words, I hear the title of the song and artist each time I hit letter b. I tried Insert S to toggle off speech echo so to try silencing JAWS from speaking, but it made no difference... it still spoke this information.I wonder if anyone else has experienced this and may know if I may have a particular setting in the latest version of Winamp configured incorrectly? This is a minor problem but an annoying one nonetheless that I've never had with previous versions of Winamp. I'm using the latest version of JAWS 9. Thanks. Chris Feist - The one and only! Re: [JAWS-Users] Winamp and Jaws 10
WinAmp did not respond for me either in Jaws 10.0 so I went into Script Manager and re-compiled winamp.jss. That seemed to get things working again. I remembered that there were scripts for WinAmp at the Jaws-Users website and downloaded, installed, and compiled the scripts. That pretty much got things back to where things were in 9.0. What is interesting is that the scripts in Jaws 8.0 worked best of all. I tried copying them to 10.0 but got a compile error. I did not feel like tracking down the error so I put the 10.0 scripts back for now. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Hot Key Question
So you have to be in the jaws application to find out? I thought you could be in like Oe or Ie or even at the desktop and press something to hear the version of jaws you are currently running, hmmm. It's not insert-control-V and it's not insert-Q, I could only tell by looking in the verbosity and I knew I was using 8, but a weird thing happened, I was going to pop in to All in play and happen to remember I didn't choose to have another version of Jaws installed at the time of installing the games. So, I thought I unloaded jaws 9 and then I would hit the hot key for Jaws 8 and go about my merry way.. But when I pressed the hot key, I heard jaws 9 40 minute demo mode, which threw me for a loop! Now I'm been using that jaws 9 since I installed it this morning way longer than 40 minutes, lol. So wonder what that was? Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Service Pack 3
Could be, but usually that pops up saying, blah blah is trying to establish a blah blah connection on port... Then you tab to allow the permanent rule thingy and then to the allow button and your good to go,hmmm Of course if he's using AVG 7.5 like I am, that thing think it owns you and your computer and will just take over regardless what's going on and then you have to sometimes alt tab back to what you were doing..
