[JAWS-Users] Deleting linebreaks

2009-03-31 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
It has worked for me to just select the linebreak symbol with shift and
the curser key, copy it to clipboard and paste in the find field, then
replacing it with nothing filled in the replacement field, which will in
effect delete the line breaks then enter on replace or replace all.

2009-03-31 Thread Chrissy

Hi list
I am using jaws 10 and wanted to install the scripts for skype but keep
getting error messages when I am recompiling to enable skypewatch. i have
checked and rechecked numerous times for errors in the procedure on my part,
but found nothing.

are there any known issues with jaws 10 and skype scripts?
I have successfully recompiled and used the scripts in previous jaws
versions with no problem. I use skype 3.8.

2009-03-31 Thread Eric Damery
Hi Victor,

It sounds as if the Windows Installer on your system had gotten into a
state where things stopped working has they should. This can happen,
especially when files are modified over time which can happen when
editing or modifying existing scripts like default. When this does
happen, it is generally more difficult to undo what went wrong, then
just cleaning it and starting over.

There were quite a few people on the list serves that had issues with
the Check for Updates feature but overall, the update process went very
smoothly for the most. I'm sure this one will go smoother for you since
the support guys helped you clean up the WinInstaller and registry
entries associated with it.

Eric

Not sure if you'll get this message, but did you guys resolve the issue
of the default.jss script file not being able to be compiled with the
newest update?

Just wondering as I don't want to go through what I went through the
other week with Jaws where I had to get one of your techs to send me a
Windows Installer clean up tool to uninstall Jaws.

Can you please shed some light on this?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Deleting linebreaks

2009-03-31 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
I was told by a programmer friend, that it consists of about two or
three symbols in windows and is thus difficult to reproduce as such with
the usual programs we use.

That is when I just tried the method described below and it worked to
get rid of unwanted line breaks.

It will usually only happen in books one scanned when some characters
were interpreted incorrectly by the OCR program.

I haven't tested it, but was told that one would be able to reproduce it
with the edge sharp program using window eyes or jaws.

2009-03-31 Thread Eric Damery
Hi Victor,

Please write me off list Victor and let me know who you worked with in
support. I'd like to check with them as well. I'm quite certain this is
a result of modifications/additions being make to the shipping scripts
at some point since the first install of JAWS 10. This causes 90% of the
issues when new versions are released as an update in the future.

BTW, while I do belong to the list, I can't keep up with the amount of
traffic (and still get my job done grin). As a result, I tend to avoid
writing the list directly to avoid getting into to many threads. In most
cases, including this one, the best solution is to contact our support
staff right away and work through it with them. I meet with that team
once a week to discuss what customers are struggling with so we can
focus on the most pressing issues for updates and new releases.

Regards,
Eric

[JAWS-Users] Unable to Retain Settings Changed in Jaws version 10

2009-03-31 Thread Ryan MacIsaac
I am having a problem with settings I have changed in Jaws version 10.
The problem first started with the Jaws build 10.0.1139 and continues with
the latest update 10.0.1142.

I use Microsoft Outlook as my e-mail client and use both Outlook 2002
(Outlook XP) and Outlook 2003. When I open the adjust Jaws options dialog by
pressing insert V while in Outlook, I then go down to change the reading
options. For example, I change the Message header field with message
announcement from the default on to off so that the e-mail address is not
read every time I read a message.

Prior to Jaws version 10.0.1139, any changes I made in this dialog were
permanent and remained in effect until I went back in to the adjust Jaws
options dialog and changed them. Now, every time I exit Outlook or click on
a link in a message, the changes I have made in the dialog are lost and the
settings revert back to the default.

This is somewhat annoying and did not occur in Jaws version 10 prior to the
build of Jaws 10.0.1139. It also does not happen in Jaws version 9.

I am running Jaws on systems which use Windows XP Home with service pack 3.
I am wondering if anyone else has noticed a similar problem and if there is
anything that can be done to overcome this.

Ryan

Eric,

This issue is nothing new, it has been occurring to a
greater or lesser degree beginning about JFW version 4.5.
My own experience is that it happens more frequently in
Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
I am currently running Jaws 9.latest, Windows XP-Pro and
Office xp Professional and the malady continues.
BTW tech support is clueless.

  Hi Victor,

It sounds as if the Windows Installer on your system had
gotten into a
state where things stopped working has they should. This
can happen,
especially when files are modified over time which can
happen when
editing or modifying existing scripts like default. When
this does
happen, it is generally more difficult to undo what went
wrong, then
just cleaning it and starting over.

There were quite a few people on the list serves that had
issues with
the Check for Updates feature but overall, the update
process went very
smoothly for the most. I'm sure this one will go smoother
for you since
the support guys helped you clean up the WinInstaller and
registry
  entries associated with it.

  Regards,
  Eric

Not sure if you'll get this message, but did you guys
resolve the issue

Just wondering as I don't want to go through what I went

Re: [JAWS-Users] Deleting linebreaks

2009-03-31 Thread Flor Lynch
Brian,

The correct symbol for a line-break (or 'soft return') is ^l [shifted6l], as
distinct from paragraph mark (or 'hard return') which is ^p [shifted6p].
When shift-down-arrow is pressed, a 'line' is selected which, if it is
blank, is a paragraph mark or 'new line'. Lines have to break up anyway,
which causes soft returns and thus ^l (carat l) is the actual character for
this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] which of those could be you're JAWS replacement

2009-03-31 Thread Paul Tandy

Hi all,

This is a little off topic.

However, I will try to help you.

To learn about Window Eyes, visit: www.gwmicro.com and click on
the second support link by pressing insert f 7.

After you click on this link, click to the link that says,
something like, emailing lists.

Finally just go in your forms mode and turn it on. Type in your
email address in which you would like the messages from the list
to go to. Then when you press tab, you should get a selection
lists for what list you can subscribe to.
Select the Gw-info list. This list answers questions that people
have about Window Eyes

Press tab, and you will hear subscribe box checked or something.

Press enter after you have subscribed.

And finally, check your email account that you selected for the
email list and you should get a message from something like,
list-serve.

Reply to that message, and you will be added to the mailing list.

Hth:

Paul

It has worked for me to just select the linebreak symbol with shift and
the curser key, copy it to clipboard and paste in the find field, then
replacing it with nothing filled in the replacement field, which will in
effect delete the line breaks then enter on replace or replace all.

Hello Eric,
I have had this problem since JAWS 9. I called tech support about it and
they had no clue. I have noticed it in any microsoft application including

 Regards,
 Eric

 Hi Eric,

Not sure if you'll get this message, but did you guys
resolve the issue
of the default.jss script file not being able to be
compiled with the
 newest update?

Just wondering as I don't want to go through what I went
through the
other week with Jaws where I had to get one of your techs
to send me a
Windows Installer clean up tool to uninstall Jaws.

Can you please shed some light on this?

[JAWS-Users] Accessibility of Omnipage 16

Hi
Personally I use Readiris Pro 11. Version 12 is now out. version 11 is a
great program. One may want a little sighted help setting the program for the

quite a powerful program for the price.

[JAWS-Users] Nicely done, TNX Freedom Scientific

2009-03-31 Thread Larry Stansifer
Hi folks,

First of all I would like to thank the team at FS for their
timely response.

Recently I posted my ongoing displeasure with Jaws repeating
text in the Microsoft office applications I use most
frequently.
I figured I had just wasted some band width and vented a bit
of frustration when to my surprise FS contacted me and spent
probably the better part of 45 minutes walking me through
some fixes and test procedures.
I will attempt to share what I can remember.
First of all go through all of the settings to optimize jaws
for your particular flavor of windows, to my chagrin a
couple of these settings had changed from the FS
recommendations.
Now go to your control panel, open Accessibility options,
CTRL-Tab to Display options, Tab until you hear cursor blink
rate and for Windows-XP make certain it is set to 63%, Tab
to ok and press spacebar now Close the control panel and
check your results.
Thus far my repeating issue seems to be solved.

TNX again Eric, Brian and John.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessibility of Omnipage 16

2009-03-31 Thread Hans Pauli Sundstein
Hi Clifford.

Omnipage 16 is fully accessible with Jaws, but it is a very advanced ocr
program, so how user friendly it is, is a question of understanding the
settings interface.
The program exists in two versions, a standard version and a Professional
version, the last one is for though who wants to create audio books directly
from the scanned material.

Best regards from Hans Pauli.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10.0.1142 update was posted March 30th

All,

This afternoon, Freedom Scientific posted another free update to JAWS 10
release. This was a very minor adjustment addressing a few issues
outlined below. If you did have problems with the Check for Updates
feature installing the build 1139 update several weeks back, you may
wish to just go to the JAWS Download page and download the full version
and install over top of your current version 10. If the check for
updates worked well for you the last time, you should be able to use it
again now and get this latest patch.

The following is a list of items addressed between the JAWS 10.0.1139
update and the JAWS 10.0.1142 update.

* The Yahoo Instant Messenger.jss script file has been updated and
included in JAWS 10 to provide support for the latest version of Yahoo!
Messenger 9. Make sure to download the latest Yahoo! Messenger for full
compatibility with JAWS 10.
* The message history in AOL Instant Messenger and the e-mail
messages in the Gmail Inbox are now visible to JAWS. Previously, the
virtual buffer would appear to be blank if you tried to read message
history or Inbox messages.
* When navigating through the Gmail Inbox, you can once again
select and open an e-mail message by pressing ENTER when focus is on the
text in the Subject column. In a previous release, it was necessary to
turn off the Virtual Cursor or use the JAWS cursor to open the e-mail
message.
* Resolved an issue related to certain Web pages with frames,
which, when updated, created a situation where JAWS would not read the
text present in the updated frame. This problem was reported for both
Gmail and the Webinar software used by the Freedom Scientific Training
department for the new Webinars
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Training/e-LearningEntrance.asp ,
both free and paid, now being offered.
* The default JAWS dictionary file (default.jdf) has been updated
to include the correct pronunciation of two Russian symbols.
* In the JAWS help file, the Using the JAWS Cursor topic now
describes the Real Window and the Focus Window restriction options that
are available for the JAWS Cursor. Previously, this topic only mentioned
the Application Window, Current Window, Unrestricted, and Frame
restrictions.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Deleting linebreaks

2009-03-31 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Flor,

Yes, the manual line break or soft return is caret+L as you stated. I think
that most of the time in Word people are wanting to get rid of extra
paragraph marks. Manual line breaks can be very handy in things like
bulleted or numbered lists when a person wants a line between bullets or
numbered items. Of course, a manual line feed can be used in those
situations with a shift key+enter keystroke.

Thank you for correcting this Flor.

Take care.

Brian,

The correct symbol for a line-break (or 'soft return') is ^l [shifted6l],
as

distinct from paragraph mark (or 'hard return') which is ^p [shifted6p].
When shift-down-arrow is pressed, a 'line' is selected which, if it is
blank, is a paragraph mark or 'new line'. Lines have to break up anyway,
which causes soft returns and thus ^l (carat l) is the actual character
for

this.

Hello sherry,

When Microsoft Word wraps on its own to a new line or when you press the

mark. A paragraph mark is used for soft or hard returns. To replace
paragraph marks in Word bring up the Find and replace dialog using
CTRL+H
to move focus into the replace page. In the edit box type a caret
(shift

f6) followed by a letter P, use tab key to the replace all button and
depress it. This will remove all paragraph marks in the document.

It has worked for me to just select the linebreak symbol with shift and

replacing it with nothing filled in the replacement field, which will in
effect delete the line breaks then enter on replace or replace all.

Re: [JAWS-Users] USING JAWS WITH IE 8 ACCELERATORS

2009-03-31 Thread Kelly Ford
Brian,

You shouldn't have to open new tabs to do all of this. One of the points of
accelerators is to let you select text on a page, select the accelerator and
take action.

So for example using JAWS in your translate example, I select some text from
the VPC mode, press the application key, select all accelerators and then
the translate item. A new tab opens automatically navigated to the
translationn service and sends your selected text.

Note for this to work right with JAWS, you need the option for text
selection in the virtual PC mode to be set to select using onscreen
highlight.

One of the nice additions to IE 8 is the use of accelerators. However, I
have not been able to find the accelerator button. Default accelerators are
available when using the application key, and the accelerators can easily be
used in new tabs, but there apparently is an accelerator button that can be
used. If anyone knows how to find it, please let me know. I added an
accelerator and made it default, but it doesn't show in the list of all
accelerators when using the application key.

Here is a brief synopsis of how I am currently using accelerators:

There are two accelerators that I use quite often. One of them is a
translation tool and the other one is a shop and save accelerator from
Live Search. I will use the latter as an example.

1. Select words on a web page. This can be text on any web page or text
that a person types in an edit box.
2. While text is selected open a new tab using CTRL+T.
3. If focus stays on the address bar in the new tab, (which has happened to
me) then use F6 until focus is moved into the content of the new tab. You
should hear that the page has so many links, and you might hear something
like what to you want to do next.
4. You can then use JAWS key with F7 to list links. If you want to
translate the text then use T in the list of links until you hear something
like translate using Live Search. There are a couple links before the one
you want that have to do with the translator. I have added the shop and
save add-on so I press the letter F to get to the find products shop and
save link and press enter. A person can also easily use down arrow to the
link without using the links list and press enter on the link. The
resultant page shows the results.

I typed external hard drive in the Google edit box, selected it and then
opened a new tab and used the find products accelerator. The resultant
page showed me a list of external hard drives from various manufacturers,
their description, a range of pricing, user reviews, etc.

I have also used the translator accelerator by selecting the text on a web
page, opening a new tab and then picking the translate with Live Search
choice. The default settings for translating from a particular language to
another one are used. The language used for translating to was not the one
I wanted, and I had some trouble getting the browser to remember my
settings. I was able to use the combo box on the translator's page to pick
the language from and to that I wanted but the next time I translated
something the settings reverted to default settings. After I cleared cookies
and chose the languages I wanted to use again, my settings were retained in
subsequent text translations. Apparently, default settings can be changed
through options on the translator.live.com page but I didn't find where to
change language settings for translation purposes.

If anyone wants to add accelerators you can do it through the manage
add-ons dialog. The choice is in the tools menu. In the dialog box use
down arrow in the group of radio buttons where you pick the type of add-on
until you get to accelerators. Use the tab key to the button for finding
more accelerators and press enter key. A web page will be loaded that lets
you choose accelerators and add them to your browser.

 Take care.

I have been having some problems with JAWS 10. I would like to uninstall it
and start over again.
Do I need to actually uninstall what I already have or do I just install it
over top of what I have?
Please give me the link for the latest JAWS 10 version.

Re: [JAWS-Users] USING JAWS WITH IE 8 ACCELERATORS

2009-03-31 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Kelly,

I appreciate you responding to my post. I changed the text selection option
to use the select using on screen highlight. However, if I simply select
the text and use the application key, the context menu does not seem focused
on the selection and only a few of the accelerators are shown. If after
selecting the text I use CTRL+C to copy the selection to the clipboard then
the application key gains focus and all my accelerators are listed in the
context menu. This behavior doesn't change if I turn caret browsing in
Internet Explorer on or off. Pressing CTRL+C is easy enough to do, but it
seems odd that it makes a difference to what is showing in the context menu.
When the new tab opens focus is on the address bar and I have to press F6
twice to get into the page content. Even so, it is quite a nice feature. I
have added a dictionary accelerator, an acronym accelerator and a couple
others.

If you know why the focus stays on the address bar on the new tab and
doesn't move directly into the page, I will appreciate you letting me know.

Take care.

Brian,

You shouldn't have to open new tabs to do all of this. One of the points
of
accelerators is to let you select text on a page, select the accelerator
and

take action.

So for example using JAWS in your translate example, I select some text
from

the VPC mode, press the application key, select all accelerators and then
the translate item. A new tab opens automatically navigated to the
translationn service and sends your selected text.

Note for this to work right with JAWS, you need the option for text
selection in the virtual PC mode to be set to select using onscreen
highlight.
