Similar to Outlook 2003, but if JAWS 10 kept reading message after

2009-06-22 Thread Donald Marang

Hi Sarah,

I was not the one that said he was using a Dell 1525 before. But I am very
happy with my Dell Inspirion 1525 laptop, running Vista Home Premium. It
has 2 GB RAM. In XP, 2 GB would seem like a lot of memory. In Vista,
however, I would not want anything less. I tend to have several
applications open at any time, so I am probable not the norm.

See, and the computer I am looking at has to have the proper ram, cause the
vista already comes installed on the laptop. I told my mom one of the people
writing on here had the dell Inspiron 1525 and I thought she said that was
the one I was looking at. I would assume that it would have proper ram and
memory or they wouldn't be able to sell it.

Those are mostly from those that,
1. Don't get enough ram to do the job.
2. vista ain't xp, but can be customized very well.
3. they don't take the time to learn vista, because again, its not xp.
Got home premium with a 2.8 gig quad cpu, 4 gig
of ram, and haven't had any of the problems most complain about.

Vista is fine. I have heard stories that vista
crashes all the time, and that you are always

switched from xp. I am just really nervous
because if it isn't working properly when I buy
the new computer then I am not able to do
anythign about it and am stuck with what I have.
How come my friend has so many problems with his
laptop? If you are pretty computer tech as far
as how to run things, then will vista be easy to figure out?
If I do a check for updates under jaws, how will
it give me the latest build if I don't have any sma's or like upgrades

Re: [JAWS-Users] Anyone using Roxio with JAWS?

2009-06-22 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello Alan,

It depends which version of roxio easy cd creater you have, as some of
the versions are less accessible than others.

Unfortunately I cannot recall which, but I know that a friend used an
earlier version, due to more graphics and thus less accessibility in
some later version and that was already more than two years ago.

If you only want to write data cd's, copy and paste and confirmation
thereof in the normal windows own applications, would still be the
easiest.

Vista home premium has windows media centre built in, so if you have a TV

can also be used to watch DVDs. If all your doing is browsing the net and

tuner card or a USB adapter, you can use Media centre to watch TV, but it
can also be used to watch DVDs. If all your doing is browsing the net and
sending and receiving emails, then home basic is fine. Media centre is the
main feature of premium, but there are some smaller ones too.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for all the advice. Well, the computer I am looking at has vista
home basic. I have heard that there are like six different versions of
vista, but don't know much about all that. So how is the premium version
different? Would I be okay with just the home basic?
Thanks to everyone else who has helped. I also talked to freedom
scientific and the tech there said he uses vista, so I think I am just
going to get the laptop I was looking at yesterdayl.

To be honest Sarah, Vista works fine with JAWS, even though personally I
find it sluggish on this laptop with 2GB RAM and 1.46GHZ dual core
processor. Now, folks, don't tell me that isn't adequate for Vista. I
know
that, however I can't downgrade to XP due to lack of drivers, plus
Windows
7, although I'm testing it, isn't recommended for the faint hearted as
it's
still in testing phases. Anyway Sarah, back to your question. Vista Home
Premium, which is what I have, will work with JAWS 10.0.512 and higher.
It
even works with JAWS 9, but with some stability issues that seemed to
have
been resolved in JAWS 10. You should, at the very least, update Vista to
SP2, plus update JAWS to 10.0.1154, which can be done through the check
for
updates feature. In terms of your tasks, Windows Mail is the e-mail
client
for Vista. Internet Explorer 7 is the web browser built into Vista,
although
you should upgrade to IE8. iTunes works fine under Vista, including the
latest (8.2) which now works with JAWS 10.0.1154. I think that's all for
now, so hope this helps.

See, and the computer I am looking at has to have the proper ram, cause the
vista already comes installed on the laptop. I told my mom one of the people

   Hi Sarah,

Perhaps you might want to wait a few days. I have heard that Best Buy and
probably others will be offering a free Windows 7 upgrade with a purchase
of
a new computer, starting June 26. I have also heard a pre-announcement
that
upgrades for others using Vista Home Premium will be available for
preorder

for only $50!
This also might be the upgrade price for an upgrade from XP to Windows 7,
since Microsoft would like to get individuals and corporations who have
stayed clear of Vista and over forward! Vista is bloated and was not
ready

when it was first released. That gave it a bad reputation. It has gotten
much better and I like it better than
XP now. However, Vista still requires more hardware than it should! It
sounds like Windows solves a;all these problems without causing any
compatibility issues. This is historic! It is the first time that
Microsoft has ever announced a new operating system that is smaller and
requires less hardware than the previous version! It sounds great and I
plan on updating.

That is what I am scaredc about. I mean I like xp and haven't had any

don't want to have a computer that I can't even use that I have spent a

I have had Vista since last August and twice now it has gone down with a
corrupt operating system failure. Unfortunately that wipes Jaws too and
although there is a recovery feature available on the Lenovo computers
you
need to access it through the BIOS which doesn't talk even when an
operating
system isn't corrupt.

I had the option at the time of XP Pro which I didn't choose it just
seems
wrong not to move with the evolving technology. Apparently Windows 7
will

be
a much lighter and more efficient operating system. Go figure, an
operating
system which doesn't consume the bulk of the resources of your computer.

I think I agree with you. People in my family are always telling me how hard

Or like someone says a program doesn't work like you are talking about and

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Vista and Jaws?

2009-06-22 Thread beccajfan

Hi Chris,
Thanks for all the advice. Well, the computer I am looking at has vista home
basic. I have heard that there are like six different versions of vista, but
don't know much about all that. So how is the premium version different?
Would I be okay with just the home basic?
Thanks to everyone else who has helped. I also talked to freedom scientific
and the tech there said he uses vista, so I think I am just going to get the
laptop I was looking at yesterdayl.

To be honest Sarah, Vista works fine with JAWS, even though personally I
find it sluggish on this laptop with 2GB RAM and 1.46GHZ dual core
processor. Now, folks, don't tell me that isn't adequate for Vista. I know
that, however I can't downgrade to XP due to lack of drivers, plus Windows
7, although I'm testing it, isn't recommended for the faint hearted as
it's

still in testing phases. Anyway Sarah, back to your question. Vista Home
Premium, which is what I have, will work with JAWS 10.0.512 and higher. It
even works with JAWS 9, but with some stability issues that seemed to have
been resolved in JAWS 10. You should, at the very least, update Vista to
SP2, plus update JAWS to 10.0.1154, which can be done through the check
for

updates feature. In terms of your tasks, Windows Mail is the e-mail client
for Vista. Internet Explorer 7 is the web browser built into Vista,
although

you should upgrade to IE8. iTunes works fine under Vista, including the
latest (8.2) which now works with JAWS 10.0.1154. I think that's all for
now, so hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] dvd audio extractor

2009-06-22 Thread Victor
Hi Vicki,

Sorry about this, I just saw your message in my bulk folder.

I've thought you might be interested in a tutorial I wrote up a few months
ago on using DVD Audio Extractor with Jaws. I've pasted it below.

It can be found on the Jaws users page under the tips and tricks page, but
it's pasted here for your reference.

***Begin Tutorial***

I am going to detail how I do things with this program, and not how things
are supposed to be done, just in case someone decides that I'm doing
something wrong.

For one thing, the program is pretty much completely accessible, so there
are no specialty keystrokes you need to know to rip a DVD using Audio
Extractor.

Having said that, the following is what I do when confronted with a DVD I
wish to rip.

I load the DVD in the CD tray of my drive, close it, and let it do it's
thing.

Depending on how you have your autoplay functions set, you will either get a
pop up window asking you what you want to do with the DVD or you may get
nothing. If you get the autoplay dialog box, just select do nothing, and
tab to the ok button.

At this point, I will open up Any DVD, and let it do it's thing by decoding
the DVD. You should get a message that Any DVD is examining the disc,
please wait, your disc will be available shortly.

Once the tray stops spinning, you'll know the DVD has been decoded by Any
DVD.

At this point, you can go ahead and open up DVD Audio Extractor.

Once the program opens up, you'll here the DVD spin in the drive again as
DVD Audio Extractor looks for the DVD that is available in any of your
drives.

You should automatically land on the help button, at which point you will
want to tab to the combo box to select the DVD drive you've placed the disc
into. The program should have selected the drive already and be listed in
the combo box, but if it hasn't, then arrow up or down to the drive to
select it.

Once selected, you tab once and you'll land on the refresh button.

If I'm ripping a second DVD after ripping the first, I will press the
spacebar on this button, just to make sure the track listing is updated to
reflect the new DVD in the tray. You never can be sure with software.

Once you do this, tab once and you'll land on the track listing of the DVD.

>From my experience, I have never seen track listings like Lee has mentioned
in his messages for ripping with this program.

I have never been able to right arrow to the alternate language, and so find
the tracks are listed by language, as opposed as in sections.

What I mean by this is, when Jaws speaks out the track number, it will have
the language somewhere in the track listing. It will list English, or
Francais or Espanol, or some other language in the title of the track.

I have never personally seen a DVD with audio description, so I really can't
say what an audio description track would look like.

Having said that, I would imagine that the title of the track would indicate
something other than the language.

As another example, I have had DVD movies, like the Fast and the Furious
that have had multiple angles to a particular scene, and this, too, is
indicated in the track title.

It will be listed as Angle 1 or Angle 2 or something along those lines.

Suffice it to say, if you look for these language names, you will be given
some idea of what language you are selecting.

Keep in mind that this is not always the case, as some DVD titles are not
authored correctly.

During the writing of this tutorial, I used a movie called March of the
Penguins. The DVD case comes with two DVD's. Presumably one DVD is the
English version, while the second DVD is the French version.

One would expect that the English version would have the word English in the
track titles, and the French version would have the word Francais, however,
this is not the case. The first DVD has only five track listings, and three
of them are listed as French titles, and two listed as English.

When I slip in the second DVD, again, there are only five track titles, but
each of them are listed as French. I have confirmed the one with all the
tracks listed as French are indeed the French version of the movie, but the
first one, even though it's listed as French, turned out to be the English
version, with Morgan Freeman narrating the movie, as usual.

Suffice it to say, I am hoping that this is not the case with all of the
DVD's one buys.

Either way, the program usually does a good job of checking which are the
main movie titles, and which are not, and so, if you're just looking to rip
the movie proper, you shouldn't have to mess around with the track listings.
I'll explain in a bit how you can make sure that the tracks selected are the
right ones.

If you wish to rip more than just the movie, such as DVD extras and the
like, you should arrow down the list of tracks, find out which are checked
and which are not. Obviously, the ones that are not checked you would use
the spacebar

If you have the paid version of AVG why are you still using window's

I agree with Gerald here, the scan does take about an hour for me too and
I've not noticed any slow downs either.

The best way to put your registeration number in the edit area is to copy
and paste it, which you probably received in an email that they sent you
when you purchased the product online?

Re: [JAWS-Users] No Speech

2009-06-22 Thread Patricia Dunbar

Trust me I have looked at everything I know to figure out why this occurs.
A system restore was performed this evening and he is been restored again.
There is no sound recording going on from him, I do not use his computer.
Allen sometimes downloads things he shouldn't and that sometimes get's him
into trouble...
His computer for the most part is so set up differently from mine that a lot
of times I have to go see how it is on my computer when it comes to
menus...settings...
Sometimes his computer will not keep certain settings as in his folders in
list view, his abilitiy to use window's cut, copy and paste commands, his
Jaws verbosity will always revert back to advanced mode and trust me he is
far from being an advance jaws user..
The Quick mix porgram did nothing to correct this recent problem and we
installed it on his computer for that very reason.

Thanks for you help..

Does you/he use a sound recording program, or any other program that would
take over the sounds? If this is going to be a frequent occurrence, you
might need to become acquainted with whatever the cause of this situation
is. otherwise, you will need sight to system-restore.

I had those same steps from David Whitehead post when this happened the

sndvol32 part, but still no sounds or speech.
I seem to recall we had to do a system restore to bring it all back sigh.

separate

from JAWS No Speech): In the Run dialog, type sndvol32; then tab once,
and
hit the home key to increase master Volume to 100%; and then tab once to
the
Mute All checkbox, which should be unchecked. press the spacebar to
change
its state to unchecked. perhaps now sound is restored. You can now
adjust
the volume, taking care *at all times* not to check any of the mute

If you have sound, but not JAWS speech: To get JAWS speech, press
JAWSKey+v, and then the end key, and then the enter key. that's a quick

I was smart this time and saved the instructions from the time before and
have tried the Run command typing the, sndvol32 and enter, but still
nothing..

Now is there any way at all to do a system's restore without speech?

Thanks,

I hope so, because that is what I have! I am not sure there will be any
more details until the 26th when the offers start. I have heard that
upgrades of the Pro versions will be $99. I think the rules will be
somewhat relaxed. Microsoft learned a lot by Vista's bad reputation. I
think their marketing plan will be to hype that xx million copies of Windows
7 have been sold.

I need to get more info on XP upgrades and compatibility. I have an aging
Sony desktop running XP. I think it needs upgraded to Windows 7 or become
a Vinux media server.

   Hi Sarah,

Perhaps you might want to wait a few days. I have heard that Best Buy
and
probably others will be offering a free Windows 7 upgrade with a purchase
of
a new computer, starting June 26. I have also heard a pre-announcement
that
upgrades for others using Vista Home Premium will be available for
preorder for only $50!

This also might be the upgrade price for an upgrade from XP to Windows 7,
since Microsoft would like to get individuals and corporations who have
stayed clear of Vista and over forward! Vista is bloated and was not
ready
when it was first released. That gave it a bad reputation. It has
gotten much better and I like it better than

XP now. However, Vista still requires more hardware than it should! It
sounds like Windows solves a;all these problems without causing any
compatibility issues. This is historic! It is the first time that
Microsoft has ever announced a new operating system that is smaller and
requires less hardware than the previous version! It sounds great and I
plan on updating.

I have had Vista since last August and twice now it has gone down with a
corrupt operating system failure. Unfortunately that wipes Jaws too and
although there is a recovery feature available on the Lenovo computers
you
need to access it through the BIOS which doesn't talk even when an
operating

I had the option at the time of XP Pro which I didn't choose it just

Hi
In order for JAWS to do the upgrades you
will probably need a current SMA agreement
with Freedom Scientific. Personally I have
been blessed with very few of the issues that
people complain about with vista. That being

Thanks, everybody for your help.
So why do I hear all this bad stuff then if Vista is fine. I have heard
stories that vista crashes all the time, and that you are always getting
errors and that Vista was like the worst opperating system and they never
should have switched from xp. I am just really nervous because if it isn't
working properly when I buy the new computer then I am not able to do
anythign about it and am stuck with what I have.
How come my friend has so many problems with his laptop? If you are pretty
computer tech as far as how to run things, then will vista be easy to figure
out?
If I do a check for updates under jaws, how will it give me the latest build
if I don't have any sma's or like upgrades things.
Thanks,
Sarah

Hi
I am running vista home addition on my HP laptop and JAWS 10. I love
vista. It took a little adjusting to figure out how to find what I want
compared to XP but over all I am pleased with the operating system.

Hi,
I have a question. My laptop recently broke, and I am trying to get a new
one. I have relized that most stuf is going towards windows vista, but I
have heard horror stories about jaws and windows vista. I have also heard
some bad stuff from a few sighted people about windows vista. However, to
get a laptop with xp on it as people have been sugesting to me costs like
$200 more then just purchasing a laptop with windows vista.
I know one person who has vista, and has had nothing but problems and
claims tha he can't even use his laptop because Vista is so bad. I have
jaws 10.0.512U and am not sure if that even works with vista. When I got
my jaws I didn't get an extra vista c.d. with it that they talk about in
the fs cast so I don't even know if I am upgraded to use vista.
I am very familear with xp, and am not just one of those go and check my
email people. I am on the computer all the time and am constantly doing
stuff such as browsing the web, syncing to my phone, putting stuff on my
ipod, etc.
Does anybody know anything about Windows Vista, and do you know if it is
still better to get xp? My mom said that it has to work because fs says it
does on there website, and she said that noone uses xp anymore and that it
is outdated and that xp is old and that's why it costs more if you want xp
on your computer instead of vista.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

2009-06-22 Thread tim

Those are mostly from those that,
1. Don't get enough ram to do the job.
2. vista ain't xp, but can be customized very well.
3. they don't take the time to learn vista, because again, its not xp.
Got home premium with a 2.8 gig quad cpu, 4 gig
of ram, and haven't had any of the problems most complain about.

I think AVG is slow anyway and you should try Avast!. The Home Edition is
free, including annual registrations, doesn't slow down your system, alerts
you of detected viruses, as well as when the database gets updated. It's
accessible too.

   Hi Sarah,

Perhaps you might want to wait a few days. I have heard that Best Buy and
probably others will be offering a free Windows 7 upgrade with a purchase
of
a new computer, starting June 26. I have also heard a pre-announcement
that
upgrades for others using Vista Home Premium will be available for
preorder for only $50!

This also might be the upgrade price for an upgrade from XP to Windows 7,
since Microsoft would like to get individuals and corporations who have
stayed clear of Vista and over forward! Vista is bloated and was not
ready
when it was first released. That gave it a bad reputation. It has gotten
much better and I like it better than

XP now. However, Vista still requires more hardware than it should! It
sounds like Windows solves a;all these problems without causing any
compatibility issues. This is historic! It is the first time that
Microsoft has ever announced a new operating system that is smaller and
requires less hardware than the previous version! It sounds great and I
plan on updating.

I need to say at this point, you didn't tell us here which version of JAWS

No, ctrl-shift-s makes a temporary change only. Go into the configuration
manager, and press ctrl-shift-d to open the Default configuration manager.
then Press alt-s for Set Options, then s for synthesizer Options. Press the
tab key. You now come to a combo box called "default synthesizer". Arrow
to the synth you want as your default. Now tab forward (or shift-tab back)
to OK, and activate with spacebar or enter. Now press ctrl-s to save your
change; or, when pressing alt-F4, agree to save your change on the way out.

You need to change the setting in the jaws configuration manager (jaws

+ 6 on the number row.) When you close that, it will ask you if you want

HTH. PS: this will only take effect for the app your in, if you want it

As I explained in my previous message, you can't do all of that through the
ctrl-insert-s facility, which is just for changing synth 'on the fly' (as
they say).

I had this once. It loaded, but after I typed in my password it got stuck
at the welcome screen and the egg timer just kept going round. Nothing
would respond, not even the touchpad. The restore luckily did it, but
that's not the point here. I wasn't even doing anything to make it corrupt.

I have had Vista since last August and twice now it has gone down with a
corrupt operating system failure. Unfortunately that wipes Jaws too and
although there is a recovery feature available on the Lenovo computers
you need to access it through the BIOS which doesn't talk even when an
operating system isn't corrupt.

I had the option at the time of XP Pro which I didn't choose it just
seems wrong not to move with the evolving technology. Apparently Windows
7 will be a much lighter and more efficient operating system. Go figure,
an operating system which doesn't consume the bulk of the resources of
your computer.

However, to get a laptop with xp on it as people have been sugesting to
me costs like $200 more then just purchasing a laptop with windows
vista.
My mom said that it has to work because fs says
it does on there website, and she said that noone uses xp anymore and
that it is outdated and that xp is old and that's why it costs more if
you want xp on your computer instead of vista.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Does you/he use a sound recording program, or any other program that would
take over the sounds? If this is going to be a frequent occurrence, you
might need to become acquainted with whatever the cause of this situation
is. otherwise, you will need sight to system-restore.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Word count short Cut Key

2009-06-22 Thread Griffiths, Steve
Mark,

By default the status bar in Word 2007 includes the word count, so you
should also be able to get it with Insert + PageDown or F6 to move focus
to the status line and then RightArrow to the word count. Shift + F6
will then take you back to the document. In both cases you get something
like "Words: X/Y" where X is the number of words in the selection and Y
is the total number of words in the document.

I just tested it, and alt t w works, but alt r w words just the same,
and it
is the w007 way of doing it. The word count is located on the review
tab.
Alt t does not take you anyware except to the home tab because by it's
self,
it is not a viable keystroke. But, alt t w works. It's just a hold over
from 2003. The 1003 menu bar commands don't work on their own. They
work
only in conjunction with another keystroke such as alt t then w. Well,
all
of them except alt f. that takes you to the office button. Use either
method, which ever works.

Okay, I tried that update thing on my computer that I am not supposed to
play around on and it says "Jaws setup package error." "The jaws setup
package could not install the required component jaws patch. The program
 will now exit.

any thing in my JAWS when switching from XP to VISTA. So, there is some

Hi
In order for JAWS to do the upgrades you will probably need a current
SMA agreement with Freedom Scientific. Personally I have been blessed with
very few of the issues that people complain about with vista. That being
said I have heard my share of vista bashing and don't understand what they

I am very familear with xp, and am not just one of those go and check my

stuff such as browsing the web, syncing to my phone, putting stuff on my

Does anybody know anything about Windows Vista, and do you know if it is
still better to get xp? My mom said that it has to work because fs says

it

Re: [JAWS-Users] Info on capacity of dvd with jaws 9

2009-06-22 Thread Marijan Janev
If you have nero, open nero and from there press ctrl+i and you will get
all pieces of information for the DVD in your DVD-drive.

Van Der Walt Riana said the following on 22.06.2009 07:47:

From within windows explorer, the cd/dvd drive selected and having
navigated to the properties menu, we are unable to view the correct info
regarding capacity and used space, on a brand new dvd.

About 3 gig's data files were written to the dvd, but both the capacity
and free space reflects as 0, when one tries to read the info. Pc curser
is locked to jaws and in the general tab, using the arrow keys, both
reflect as 0, although it appears that the files have been written
correctly to the dvd, when played in windows media player 11.

It's a windows xp operating system, using jaws 9.
Does someone have a solution or different method, to obtain the used,
and/or free space with jaws?

Thanks and regards

Riana

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Vista and Jaws?

2009-06-22 Thread Chris Hallsworth
To be honest Sarah, Vista works fine with JAWS, even though personally I
find it sluggish on this laptop with 2GB RAM and 1.46GHZ dual core
processor. Now, folks, don't tell me that isn't adequate for Vista. I know
that, however I can't downgrade to XP due to lack of drivers, plus Windows
7, although I'm testing it, isn't recommended for the faint hearted as it's
still in testing phases. Anyway Sarah, back to your question. Vista Home
Premium, which is what I have, will work with JAWS 10.0.512 and higher. It
even works with JAWS 9, but with some stability issues that seemed to have
been resolved in JAWS 10. You should, at the very least, update Vista to
SP2, plus update JAWS to 10.0.1154, which can be done through the check for
updates feature. In terms of your tasks, Windows Mail is the e-mail client
for Vista. Internet Explorer 7 is the web browser built into Vista, although
you should upgrade to IE8. iTunes works fine under Vista, including the
latest (8.2) which now works with JAWS 10.0.1154. I think that's all for
now, so hope this helps.

I had this once. It loaded, but after I typed in my password it got stuck at

respond, not even the touchpad. The restore luckily did it, but that's not
the point here. I wasn't even doing anything to make it corrupt.

need to access it through the BIOS which doesn't talk even when an

windows7 come out?
That is what I am scaredc about. I mean I like xp and haven't had any
problems, and I agree that you have to move with the technology, but I
don't want to have a computer that I can't even use that I have spent a
bunch of money on, but at the same time, do 't have the extra $200 to pay
for the transition option to get an xp computer. Windows Vista computers

the fs cast so I don't even know if I am upgraded to use vista.
My mom said that it has to work because fs says
it
does on there website, and she said that noone uses xp anymore and that
it
is outdated and that xp is old and that's why it costs more if you want
xp

on your computer instead of vista.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Sarah
