Re: [JAWS-Users] I just installed zone alarm and it's driving me nuts!
Randy, What kind of problems are you having? Admittedly, ZoneAlarm is difficult for blind users and jaws, but I managed to do just enough to get it working for me. One thing that I found is that you must use the Jaws cursor to navigate the page that comes up after the installation. In order to close the page, I placed the Jaws cursor on the close symbol, but I cannot use the left mouse on the numPad key to close it. Instead, while on the close symbol, I hit the left mouse button on the mouse itself to make it work. Also, as I mentioned to Chris, I had the initial problem allowing Jaws to access the Internet when there is no speech. I did get around it with NVDA to check the check box to remember my setting and enter on allow. Can you be more specific what problems you are having? Once I have ZoneAlarm up and running, it pretty much does its job for me. Are you in the USA? If so, maybe I can contact you to give you further help? Write me at merlin...@mchsi.com off list if you are and we will go from there. Re: [JAWS-Users] slight sluggishness with jfw 11?
I wonder how much of this sluggish problem is actually due to the focus problem. In OE it usually reads messages ok, but too frequently when you delete a message it doesn't start reading the next message automatically. I do not have this problem with JFW 10. I think something has to be done about the focus problem. Although 11 has some nice features, I'm not sure it is worth the annoying focus problem to use it. I find myself going back to 10. And yes, I have filled out the FS form. hello; here's another way you can perform the shutdown task. give these steps a try. Shortcuts for shutting/restarting windows. this works for windows XP, and Vista. You can create a shortcut icon, you can assign a keystroke that will shutdown windows. 1. Minimize to your desktop and press f5 to unselect any item on your desktop. 2. Press the applications key and enter on new. 3. Enter on shortcut. you should see this screen; Create Shortcut Create Shortcut What item would you like to create a shortcut for? This wizard helps you to create shortcuts to local or network programs, files, folders, computers, or Internet addresses. Type the location of the item: Browse... Click Next to continue. Next Cancel 4. Type in SHUTDOWN -s -t 01 without the quotation marks 5. Click NEXT. 6. Now type in a name for your shortcut. The default name will be,shutdown.exe You can name it anything you want then click finish. You will now see a new icon on your desktop with the name you gave it. 7. Press alt enter on the icon and give it a shortcut keystroke. When you want to shut down your computer just press your hot-key. or you can just press enter on the icon to perform the shutdown task. If you would like to create a shortcut for restarting your computer, use the same steps above, Just replace the first S with a R. [JAWS-Users] live messenger being difficult - Yahoo being stupid - Switching to Miranda
I see no reason why Yahoo wouldn't work with 11 but I never really tried it. In 10 I found it quirky and unstable, connection problems, lots of little things that just bugd the out of me. And that was before the messages started to have delays of more than five seconds before they were spoken. So I downloaded Miranda. It works like a charm. I love it already. With a little bit of tweaking and adding a number of words in the dictionary I find it runs very smooth. What it doesn't do is speak the smileys. If I go into the histry it's there, let's say a winking smiley ;) Even if I have added that to the dictionary, it won't speak it when the message is spoken. I can live without it as I send smileys and they can see them just fine. I'm just wondering if anyone is using Miranda here and has anything to add. Downloaded Miranda from the jaws-users page, under programs, as well as the scripts from the script page. [JAWS-Users] text selection mode
I have a question concerning text selection mode in word. If memory serves me correctly, when pressing the function key eight, it will take you into text selection mode and you can select word, sentence, paragraph or document. So, my question are as follows. 1.. In order to use this am I needing to have it set at printview? (or does that matter) 2.. Does the sentence need to have periods or some sort of punctuation? I asked this because I was at another computer today, I believe it was an IBM laptop and when I did function key eight, it said, word, paragraph and document. How come there wasn't an option for sentence? Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. Re: [JAWS-Users] Zone Alarm help please?
Jose, I posted this information the other day to the list. Perhaps, you might have missed it?So, I copied and pasted it here for you. See it below and let me know if you need any further help. ZoneAlarm has two versions, one is free while the complete one will have to be purchased. The free one is the basic free ZoneAlarm. I use this one although navigating ZoneAlarm is not very friendly to Jaws users. Once it is set up, you can use it to allow or deny access to the Internet and prevent anyone from accessing your computer. Note, this is only a firewall while the paid version comes complete with anti-virus and anti-spyware. You can go to the following site to download it at: http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/free-upgrade-security-suite-zonealarm-firewall.htm Press enter on the following which is a link on the page to start the download. Get it from CNET Download.com! Note: the download will not start. You will have to press enter where it said something like if download not started click here. You should then bring up the file download page. Lennie At 06:03 PM 9/18/2009, you wrote: Hello; Listers, Can anyone please give me the direct URL for Zone Alarm? Re: [JAWS-Users] text selection mode
Ok, my question basically was when doing text selection is it suppose to say word, sentence, paragraph and document? I noted in my previous message that when I was at another machine an went into text selection mode I did not hear the sentence option and just wanted to know does text selection differ from machine-to-machine and if it doesn't how come I did not get the sentence option from the other machine and only word, paragraph and document? Well, were there periods [full stops] in it as well? If so, I don't know why sentences were not included in the order. If not, then I have explained it. [JAWS-Users] Application mode question
Hi Listers, I'm using Jaws 10 and Vista. Tonight everytime I try to go to Yahoo mail, Jaws says application mode on. I don't have any idea what that means, but I can't navigate the page at all with the PC/virtual cursor. I can read with the Jaws cursor, but when I route PC to Jaws, reading is very strange with Jaws not recognizing links or responding to any commands. I would like to understand what application mode is and how to not have it come on without being asked for. Hi Flor, I am running Word 2002 also, but when I press the F8 key to activate the text selection mode, then press the F8 key again to go from word, to sentence, to paragraph, to document Jaws reads word or document . Am I trying to choose the text choice in which I want to select text incorrectly? If so, what are the correct keystrokes to use in text slection mode? All advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] how to shutdown vista
Hello, If you create these shortcuts in Windows Vista the computer will shut down or restart quicker if you use a 00 instead of the 01 at the end of the line in the type the location box. You will also stop getting the dialog telling you that Windows will shut down or restart in less than a minute. Also be careful not to use shortcut keys that you use a lot in other programs. For example, if you use Alt+CTRL+1 for shut down then if you are in Word and use the keystroke for heading 1, the computer will shut down instead. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] how to shutdown vista
Hi brian, Would you be able to provide an answer concerning the text selection mode? I'm using word 07. If you don't know what I am referencing here was my email. Re: [JAWS-Users] how to shutdown vista
Hi Kimsan, I realize that the subject line needs to be changed, so I will answer your questions and then let's take any follow-up off list. The selection mode that you are put in when you use F8 in Word works regardless of if you are in print view, draft view, web view or outline view. JAWS doesn't support full page view. In Word there would have to be punctuation marks at the end of sentences before Word would recognize a structure as a sentence. Also, in AutoCorrect if the writing style setting shows that there should be two spaces after a punctuation then Word will likely not recognize a sentence unless two spaces follow the end of sentence punctuation marks. You can check your writing style settings by using the office button with alt+F then pressing the letter I for Word options, and use down arrow through the category list to the proofing category. Use tab key across the page and you will find the writing style being used and a button for settings. Press spacebar on the button. use tab to where you hear the word required and use down arrow in the list. You might hear a line about the number of spaces and not hear the number. Route JAWS to PC and read the line if that happens and you will hear the number of spaces required for being between sentences. I have noticed that JAWS will sometimes say paragraph twice and not say sentence if there is only one sentence in a paragraph. Another thing I have noticed in a couple of the views is that JAWS will just say word when you select a word at the beginning of a sentence. At least that can happen with a short word like I at the beginning of the sentence. However, if you use the say all selected text command you will hear the word that was selected. Again, that only happens in a couple of the views. When you use F8 you go into select mode. Your navigating keys then can also be used to select and deselect without the use of the shift key. Also as pressing F8 selects, if you use shift+F8 you will start to deselect. Take care. I'm using word 07. If you don't know what I am referencing here was my email.
