Hi Gerald,

My understanding is that MSE is an antivirus program also. Wouldn't MSE
conflict with my Avast antivirus program? Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks much. Take care.

I'm very happy with MSE so far. I have it set to run quick scans daily,
and
it is totally unobtrusive. A quick scan takes about 5 minutes on my
system,
and a full scan about an hour. It is totally JAWS accessible and has the
simplest user interface of any anti-malware program I've used. You can
essentially set it and forget it, because it updates itself automatically.
I can't comment on its malware detection ability, other than what I have
read in reviews, which has generally been very positive. You can use MSE
in
conjunction with Super Anti-Spyware, Malware Bytes and online anti-malware
scanners like Bit Defender, F-Secure and Trend Micro Housecall. Good job
by
  MS.

All versions of windows 7 are accessible with Jaws 10. It works very well

does not work with the calculator in win7 the list system tray icons

JAWS Public Beta 3 was posted late in the day yesterday, October 6th. The
details and full list of Enhancements can be found at:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS-public-beta.asp

If you have one of the previous Public Beta versions already installed, you can
use the check for updates feature in the Help Menu to get this build.
Alternatively, you can download the full build from the Freedom Scientific page
above or the download page for JAWS and install it directly. It does not
require that the earlier versions were installed. If they were, you can just
install this one right over top.

As with the previous two versions of JAWS 11 Public Beta, it will work fully
functional provided you have JAWS 10 or higher authorization installed.
Otherwise, it work as an evaluation copy requiring a reboot every 40 minutes.

We thank everyone that participated in the Beta process. There were hundreds of
reports which have lead to a very solid version of JAWS. We are in the final
days of adjustments now and on track for an October 21st final release.

JAWS Public Beta 3 was posted late in the day yesterday, October 6th. The
details and full list of Enhancements can be found at:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS-public-beta.asp

If you have one of the previous Public Beta versions already installed, you
can use the check for updates feature in the Help Menu to get this build.
Alternatively, you can download the full build from the Freedom Scientific
page above or the download page for JAWS and install it directly. It does
not require that the earlier versions were installed. If they were, you can
just install this one right over top.

As with the previous two versions of JAWS 11 Public Beta, it will work fully
functional provided you have JAWS 10 or higher authorization installed.
Otherwise, it work as an evaluation copy requiring a reboot every 40
minutes.

We thank everyone that participated in the Beta process. There were hundreds
of reports which have lead to a very solid version of JAWS. We are in the
final days of adjustments now and on track for an October 21st final
release.

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows vista, any good?

2009-10-07 Thread Desiree Oudinot
If you're going to get Vista, I would suggest disabling UAC, or user
account control as it's really an annoyance. Basically what it does is
asks permission before you can run any program. I also found that Jaws
tends to hang in the UAC dialog, so I would just disable it right away
and save yourself all the hastle.
I think in general Vista is more complicated. The layout of menus and
things like the control panel is really something that would make more
sense to a sighted person.

In about 14 days, Windows 7 will be released, and shortly after that will be
boundled with new computers, and it works much easyer than Vista does.

If the software you own, and want to be installed on it, is older than from
year 2003, you can not be sure of compatibility with the new operating
system, but sometimes it works eventhough that it is older, while the
programmers has done theire work well.

You can use Windows 7 with Jaws 10, but it works best with Jaws 11, because
there is some things that Jaws 10 not is able to acces in the right way.
So if you have an upgrade in your license, than do so.

 Good luck.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 Public beta 3 posted

2009-10-07 Thread CrisMunoz54
I do agree, iTunes 9 does work a lot better with this latest beta version.
Even the issue with having to do a shift tab and then tab in order for
podcasts to be read correctly has been fixed. I'm still noticing however,
that when going up a list of tracks or even in the browser boxes (genre,
artist, etc) jaws still says not selected and repeats the same line of
information for the previous track instead of the new one. This bug has
always been there. Hopefully though it too can be addressed with the final
release.

Also, often when tabbing through iTunes and when I wish to do a shift tab,
jaws goes forward instead of back. This is pretty frequent and can get
somewhat frustrating when you wish to go in one direction, but you're taken
in the other even when you're pressing the proper key combinations. Again
though, this issue has been present in past versions of jfw.

All in all, a good clean up with iTunes, but those are the two main problems
I'm still noticing that have always been there. It would be great if they
too could finally be fixed.

Thanks,
Cristobal

I'm very happy with MSE so far. I have it set to run quick scans daily, and
it is totally unobtrusive. A quick scan takes about 5 minutes on my system,
and a full scan about an hour. It is totally JAWS accessible and has the
simplest user interface of any anti-malware program I've used. You can
essentially set it and forget it, because it updates itself automatically.
I can't comment on its malware detection ability, other than what I have
read in reviews, which has generally been very positive. You can use MSE in
conjunction with Super Anti-Spyware, Malware Bytes and online anti-malware
scanners like Bit Defender, F-Secure and Trend Micro Housecall. Good job by
MS.

 Hi Al,

I removed Trend Micro Antivirus which came on my laptop with
 a 3 year
subscription. I still have at least a year left but was
 ready to dump it
anyway. It can be very annoying! Security Essentials does
 a thorough scan
in about the same time with less load. Of course, it does
 add load and slow
things down some, but it did not effect JAWS speaking at
 all. Trend Micro
would pop up unexpectedly while typing and would slow down
 the system even
just reading mail! If Security Essentials does not work
 out, I probably
 will run Avast or A V G.

For one thing, it supports a lot of the newer features and ways of
programming or coding that are being used in many new sites. Also, there
are things in windows 7 that JAWS 10 can't deal with and JAWS 11 can.

To me, the most important reason to keep a screen reader up to date is
because we want to do what everybody else is doing, and if you stay with
something old that can't access the new technologies that are being used in
programs and on the web, then you are only holding yourself back.

Staying with an older screen reader and wanting to do what others are doing
with the new software is just like wanting to run windows 95 and trying to
install new software. Basically it's to keep up with technology and to be
more productive.

Staying with an older screen reader and wanting to do what others are doing

Yes I do know about the money. Somehow the wife and I always seem to manage
to scrape up the money to keep jaws updated. Personally I find the research
it feature a very useful tool and much quicker in finding information.
It's like a news portal, dictionary and encyclopedia at the touch of your
finger tips with just a stroke of a few keys. IE8 and some new programs are
starting to use features that JAWS 10 or lower will not be able to do, so
there is two arguments for...let's see if I can think of more. I have
noticed that IE8's performance and reading is better than it was in 10 and
more things seem to be more accessible on web pages. OH yeah, and the
landmarks feature, even though I haven't tried to figure that one out yet.
Well, maybe there are a couple of ideas that you can use.

All versions of windows 7 are accessible with Jaws 10. It
works very well
with the latest jaws 10, except for some minor issues. For

does not work with the calculator in win7 the list system
tray icons

minor issues with
combo boxes that I hope is fixed in version 11. Also, as to

That was part of the problem that I had. If you are on a web page, email etc
you can select a phrase then use windowskey, jaws key and r and the word or
phrase will be looked up. You can also use jaws key plus space then the
letter r. At that point you should be able to enter something to be searched

I got this from the PAC Mate owner's manual, but it should help.

Jimmy, there are two publications available at National Braille Press. One
is something like Computer Braille Code and the other has Computer
Braille
in the title. One costs something like $7 or $5, and the other is often
 free. Check them out.

Hello guys and gals.  I have a focus 40 display that I would like to learn
how to input from the display instead of the standard keyboard, or along
with the standard keyboard.  However, I've never been lucky enough to learn
computer Braille.  Where can one Find the info to learn how to do this.  As
far as the letters go, I can type them, but I need to learn how to input
 punctuations and such.
