Re: [JAWS-Users] Word backups
Hi Vicki, I Googled word 2003 backups stored in and got a page containing: This info applies to versions up through 2003. When you turn on the backup feature, Word saves backup files by appending or prepending some special text to your file name. In some versions of Word, the WBK filename extension is used instead of the familiar DOC. In other versions of Word, the DOC extension is used by Word adds the phrase Backup of to the beginning of the document name. Let's say that you have two directories, and in each one you have different documents but each has the same name, as in MyLetter.doc. If you have backups turned on, and Word allows you to specify where the backups are placed, then the names for the backups of the two different files would be the same (either MyLetter.wbk or Backup of MyLetter.doc), and two files with the same name cannot be saved in the same folder. The solution is for Word to simply keep the backup copy of a document in the same folder as the original copy. That way, you don't run into naming conflicts at all. Interesting. I have the backup feature checked and time marked, but it doesn't seem to be working. I'll have to do some more digging and see what the problem is. [JAWS-Users] Question on uninstalling outlook express 6, and applications running office 2003.
Good morning everyone. I have office 2003 installed on my desktop computer, as well as jaws 10 with windows xp home addition with all available service packs. My question here is , if I were to uninstall office 2003 and replace it with office 2007, and replace my current version of outlook express 6 with the newer version of outlook express that comes with office 2007, would I then have to completely uninstall office 2003 first, before installing office 2007? I'm asking this, because my current version of outlook express 6, has, and is giving me real problems here that I can't seem too resolve nor do I have an opportunity too have a technician that I can call on to help me fix these problems that I am having with my current version of outlook express 6. Re: [JAWS-Users] question about windows 7
I think it would be more correct to say that Microsoft took too long to develop Vista, released it too soon, and made many PR mistakes rolling it out. Vista works well now, and much more secure than XP. For me, it's main remaining problem is that it requires too much resources. It seems that Microsoft has learned from their Vista mistakes. Windows is a streamlined version of Vista and needs less memory CPU and hard disk! The only free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 is if you purchased a computer within the last few months. I have not heard of any other free upgrades, and doubt if they would do that. There was a pre-order upgrade for $50, but that offer is no longer available. These upgrade packages can be applied to either Vista or XP. Windows 7 Premium is the most logical upgrade for most people. There is now a family pack available for about $150 that allows upgrading 3 computers. I hear that there is also a discount student version for around $30. It seems that all that is necessary to qualify for this discount is an email ending with .edu. Re: [JAWS-Users] problum with the scripts forPamelaBasicJAWSScripts .exe
Hi Mitch, I am not familiar with those particular scripts. Many scripts can be installed by simply copying all of the files into the JAWS user settings folder for the version of JAWS you are using for that application and compiling them. Most of the time there is a ReadMe or similar text file is included in the zip file. If there is, there might be instructions and usage instructions in that file. The installer is capable of performing other tasks as well. If there are no instructions, try the following: 1. Download and extract the zip file for the scripts. 2. Select all files in this folder with Control + A and Then Copy with Control + C. 3. Open the JAWS user settings folder for the version of JAWS in use. This can be accomplished by selecting All Programs JAWS 10.0 (or whatever version of JAWS desired) Explore JAWS Explore My Settings from the Start menu. 4. Paste the files with Control + V. 5. Open the application for these scripts. 6. Press Insert + 0 (in the numbers row) to open Script Manager with the script source file opened. 7. Press Control + S to save the file and compile it for your version of JAWS. 8. Close Script Manager by pressing Alt + F4. The scripts should now work. You may need to close the application and restart it for the scripts to be loaded. Hello Friends, I have not allowed my Automatic Updates to continue for a few months, since I read about the I. E. 7 situation, as I only have JAWS 9.0156 on my XP-Home machine! I am not worried so much about Security,as I am about downloading something in the Windows Updates that will mess up a perfectly working system, my thinking, is of course: If it ain't broke, don't fix it And as I said things are just working so perfectly, two (2) T-Drives, fantastic sound system, no problems with JAWS or anything! It is absolutely critical that you install all security updates to plug up security holes in Windows and IE. Failing to install these updates could leave you vulnerable to a malware attack. These updates should not interfere with JAWS in any way. You should never disable Automatic Updates unless you enjoy dealing with the consequences of a virus attack. Re: [JAWS-Users] definition of a toolbar
Hi Kimsan, Here is an answer I received after asking pretty much the same question. It sounds like you are asking for general information that explains what toolbars are and how to access them using JAWS. I will use Microsoft Word for examples, but the information below does not apply to Microsoft Word 2007. In addition to having a menu bar, many programs also have one or more toolbars that are generally found near the top of the program's window. The toolbars give people the ability to use a mouse to click on a function that they want to do instead of having to search through levels of menus or dialog boxes to perform the functions. The toolbars are usually positioned horizontally from left to right and quite often are positioned just under the menu bar. There are programs that have toolbars positioned vertically. A toolbar can have several small graphical pictures and might or might not be labeled with text labels. An example of a toolbar is the standard toolbar in Microsoft Word. A few of the choices on the standard toolbar are New blank document, Open, save, print, mail recipient, spell checking among others. Mouse users can move the mouse across the toolbar and click on the choice for the function they want performed. There are many toolbars included in some programs. Quite often toolbars can be made active by going under a view menu with Alt-V, using the up or down arrow to find the toolbar choice, using right arrow to move into the toolbar submenu and then using up or down arrows to find the toolbar you want. In Microsoft Word there will be several toolbars. If you want to work with forms then press enter on the forms toolbar choice. If you want to work with drawing tools then press enter on that choice. The standard and formatting toolbars in Microsoft Word should be left checked. When using up or down arrows through the toolbars submenu listen for whether an item is checked or not. If it is checked it is already active and in use. Simply press enter on a choice to reverse the status, in other words if it says checked and you press enter you will remove the toolbar from the screen and visa versa. In Microsoft Word to access a toolbar that is active first press Alt or Alt with an underlined letter on the menu bar to move to the menus. After moving to the menu bar use the keystroke CTRL+tab to cycle between available toolbars and the menu bar. You will learn which choices are on what toolbars and what to listen for to know it is the toolbar you want. For example, you listen for New blank document to know you are on the standard toolbar. Once on the toolbar you want you can use right and left arrows to move across the toolbar. Pressing enter on a choice performs the function. For example, if you right arrow across the standard toolbar to the E-mail recipient button and press enter, the headers to fill in for your E-mail message will appear. In HTML formatted E-mail, help systems, Internet browsers like Internet Explorer, etc., you access an active toolbar by using Insert-F8, (the insert key on the number pad when the numlock key is off with the function key 8). When the toolbar appears then you can up and down arrow to choices. It is important to remember that most things a person uses the toolbars for can be accomplished by using menus or with hotkeys. This isn't always true though. This has been a quick general overview or synopsis of what a toolbar is and how to access toolbars using JAWS. Let me know if I can clarify any of the points I made. Brian Lee brianl...@charter.net One point that I would like to add is that some tool bars are floating tool bars. This means that they will appear some place on the screen other then under the menu bar or the standard tool bar, and these floating toolbars move. You can still navigate to them as described in Brian's excellent post. Sometimes these floating tool bars can cause JAWS to have problems reading the contents of your screen. HTH, Annette Hello, Press Jaws key+F8 different items will come out regarding the program that you use. In Internet Explorer the insert+F8 only brings up the IE toolbar. The insert-F8 keystroke is generally mapped to the function for showing the active application's toolbar. Sometimes by moving to the top of a web page using CTRL+home keys, routing JAWS to virtual PC, doing a page up and then moving down a line at a time with the down arrow key will find other toolbars. If you do find your toolbar then you can move a word at a time across it using CTRL+right arrow until you find the tool you want to click. Use a left mouse click emulation by using the insert+slash keys on the numpad when numlock is off. After clicking on the choice remember to put the virtual PC cursor on again. Some one else might have a better way to access other toolbars in Internet Explorer. The above sometimes works for me and sometimes doesn't work. To perform the above functions if you have a laptop using
Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on uninstalling outlook express 6, and applications running office 2003.
Hello Rick. Let me try and answer your question, as to what problems I'm experiencing when using outlook express 6. When I delete a message, or any message for that matter, when I open the message after the one that I just deleted, I hear the whole subject line of the previous message, and not the subject line of that new message that I just opened. Next, whenever I do a reply to an individual message, or do a reply too all, when I go to the top of the message too review what I had written, it won't let me read either character by character, or when trying too do a controlright arrow or control left arrow, the cursor doesn't advance, and I have too close the message entirely, and start the whole message all over again. I even tried deleting both the inbox, and out box, thinking that might solve the problem, but it didn't work. I even renaimed all of the inbox out box, sent items and deleted items folders, and still was a no go. Now, here's a strange thing. On my new netbook computer which I received a few months ago, it came with office 2007 preinstalled on it, along with the choice of either installing outlook, or outlook express. I chose too install outlook express as my email service. Originally, when I first got this desktop dell computer, which was sometime in July of 2002, it came with word 2002, with I suppose office 2002 as well. However, when a friend came over who is a technision, He gave me a copy of his office 2003, which he installed on my computer. I think he did that for me, because he didn't want me to spend extra money for office 2003, which he already had. I didn't ask him for it at all, he just tried to do me a nice favor as a friend. So, there you have it in a nutshell. Thank you for answering my email, and for trying too help me out with this problem. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on uninstalling outlook express 6, and applications running office 2003.
Hi Albert, I don't recall if you said which version of Jaws you are using, but have you tried using a different version to see if that makes a difference. The problem you describe does not really sound like an Outlook Express issue. Re: [JAWS-Users] Automatic Updates
Hi Alan, There are tutorials on Windows automatic updates on both: www.blind-computing.com and www.jaws-users.com If you set up automatic updates correctly, you can choose which updates to install. Security updates should always be installed, and can always be un-installed if there seems to be some conflict. On quite a few different machines over a 9 year period, I have never really experienced a problem resulting from a Windows update. Re: [JAWS-Users] Automatic Updates
I have never had any problems installing updates. They are good to get to keep up with the latest improvements and security patches. If you do not want the latest IE, then unmark this and it won't be included in the updates any more, in the future. chrissy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on uninstalling outlook express 6, and applications running office 2003.
I forgot to mention in my last post on this subject, that I've tried doing a jaws 10 repair, as well as maximizing the window before composing a new message, and it was to no avail. I didn't have any of these problems with outlook express 6, until I received and installed jaws 10 from the cd that they sent me in the mail. I realize that there are people on this list that are very loyal jaws users, but I'm beginning to think that they should address many of the current problems that people are experiencing, either with outlook express 6, outlook, word versions such as those experienced when using word 2002, 2003, the inability of jaws stating whether or not after something has been selected copied or pasted. What good does it do any of us, to come out with newer versions of existing programs if older problems that people are experiencing don't get fixed before they release newer versions of jaws . [JAWS-Users] control f4 and control w
I found this interesting. I have multiple pages loaded at startup with IE8. to close a page I normally used control plus W. I accidentally discovered that control plus F4 accomplishes the same thing. If there is no other use for control we this key combination could be reassigned for another use.
