[JAWS-Users] Adjust Win7 For Best Performance

2010-06-11 Thread David Ferrin
For many years, Microsoft has tried to make Windows look as silky and smooth as
possible. But looking good soaks up system

resources. If you can live without some of the visual bells and whistles, you
can regain a bit of lost performance. Dig into

Start, Control Panel, System And Security, System, and Advanced System
Settings. Click the Settings button in the Performance

section. In the Performance Options pop-up window, you'll see a long list of
visual elements and effects within Windows 7,

most of which are enabled by default as part of the Let Windows Choose What's
Best For My Computer option. You can select

Custom, then pick and choose which items to disable. For a fast, slash-and-burn
approach, pick Adjust For Best Performance to

turn off all effects. This will result in a blander interface but better
response times, particularly if you use integrated

graphics or a trailing-edge graphics card.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Email Search

2010-06-11 Thread Steve

Two ways to search emails.

The first way, as you know, is to open the folder where you want to start
your search. Press control-shift-f to bring up the find message dialog.
Specify your fields, e.g. who the message was from, relevant words in the
subject field or relevant words in the message body. You also can have it
search any subfolders. You get better results if you don't specify too
much.

The second way that I use to find email is to use Google Desktop. It will
find emails that I no longer even have on my system. The search will
usually be quicker. But, when you install the Google Desktop, you need to
configure it and give it time to index all the files and messages you want
before it will do a complete search. It only indexes when the computer is
inactive.

Hmmm, this seems to be complicated.
If I pressed the f3 to search for an email in my deleted folder, it does
that, but if I wish to search for another, I have to move to anotehr
folder, otherwise all I get is, the same message box I already stated.
Now if I press control/shift/f that gives me more options as well as a
browse button to choose the folder to look in for said email. Then I can
tab down to the new search button.

If I go to another folder within OE using the f3 I can get more options
and it too has the browse and advance buttons, which is exactly the same
if you pressed control/shift/f.

But personally, it's both tedious and time consuming to locate an email
this way, I can find it faster just doing it myself.

A note...if you change the location to search in a folder using the
control/shift/f and browse to buttons, it gives you a drop down list of
all your folders within OE. Unless I am doiing something wrong which
certainly could be the case, the f3 only searches in the folder you are
in at the time you pressed the key combo.

Happy searchin' y'all,lol

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2007 vs. 2010

2010-06-11 Thread Steve
Accessibility is about the same, assuming you have the latest version of the
screen-reader, from my limited playing with Office 2010 basic, and more
experience with Office 2007 HomeStudent and Professional.

In Office 2010, Outlook has instituted the ribbons that they hadn't put in
on the 2007 version. Word, Excel, all continue to have the ribbon interface
now.

Hello Patti;

try the following;

2, now tab until you hear;
When exiting SkypeTalking, also quit Skype
by default the box is checked,
uncheck the box with spacebar,
now, you can exit skype talking, but your skype program will still be
running.

now, tab okay button, press enter.

hope this helps.

But NextUp says all their voices only work with their other speech

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on job software with JAWS

2010-06-11 Thread Jean Menzies
Yes, I use ExpressScribe all the time. It's interfase isnt' great, but the
menus all work and you can load files easily by right clicking on the file
and choosing transcribe with express scribe. It has a lot of options you can
set through the menus, and once you do that, you really don't need to use
the onscreen stuff. At least I don't. It's nice because when you close a
file, it remembers where you were when you launch the program again. Contact
me off list if you want a few keyboard shortcuts to help get you started if
you get the job.

[JAWS-Users] Where should I install this ATT natural voice so it is detected and usable by JAWS?

2010-06-11 Thread Dujari, Prateek
Hello.

So I found that NEXTUP.com does state that ATT voices purchased from them will
work with JAWS. I just purchased and downloaded the executable of the voice
from them. Nextup instructions state that when running the executable to
install the voice on my PC, I must not change the default directory for the
installation.

If I do install it in the default directory that comes up during the install,
and then after install restart my PC, will JAWS then detect it and allow me to
select /use it? Or doe I have to install the voice in a specific directory for
JAWS to be able to detect it and offer its a choice to me under the voice
options menu inside JAWS? In fact I've this last question for any 3rd party
voice I buy and want to use with JAWS.

Thx much!

Thank you Chris now my next question is there any versions of Skype that

I can request my information from the website but last time I did that I

The sequence didn't appear to matter from the last time I tried it. I
however always installed Skype first, then the scripts.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws guide for Google

2010-06-11 Thread Dale Leavens

This is an incidental question.

Some time over the past several weeks the appearance of Google has changed
on my computer. The list of pages at the bottom no longer shows witch of the
pages I have visited or at least Jaws doesn't say so, there are a load of
additional suggested related searches after the search results and a few
other annoying presentation changes. I am unaware of changing any settings
and on the computer my wife uses the presentation is the classic one I have
grown to love.

What happened on this computer and how can I put it back?

Thanks to anyone for help with this confusion.

Dale leavens.

I've recently updated my guide to searching using Google to cover recent
design changes. These include the restructuring of the search options, and
the inclusion of landmarks in the results pages to aid navigation. The
guide is available at:

To add to the Google mystery issue, my home page is Google. Lately, when I
go to my homepage from the desktop Google displays its content in Tagalog
which is the language of The Philippines. When I click on the English link
everything appears correctly. However, as soon as I close the browser and
open it again Google shows the Tagalog language again. This just started
happening this week and it's not a major problem but it is annoying

Its nothing you have done. You can blame google for that one.
They put up a way to change the background to what every you would
like or use 4 different ones of there choosing.
They really broke the google page and it made the news here of all of
the complaints about it to google. Google stated that they was going
to put back the old style until more testing went on.

Well, I sort of figured I hadn't done anything, and I thought that it was
probably a google thing except that on my wife's computer we still have the
old default google presentation. I want it back! Do you know if there is
some way to get it back?

Thanks.
