Re: [JAWS-Users] Tinny Jaws on my Laptop

2010-07-10 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Scorpio,

You might check in the sound card submenu of the utility menu in the JAWS
window to see if JAWS is using the right sound card. It could be set up to
use headphone output or a different output device than what your other sound
devices are using. I noticed in the list of my devices in that menu that
high definition codecs for headphones had a couple entries in addition to
the default Windows sound card. You probably will want to confirm what
device is set up as default and whether or not that device is being used by
JAWS.

Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Tinny Jaws on my Laptop

Hi All,

I'm not sure if I've asked this before, but forgive my repetitiveness, as I
am desperate for a solution. Smile.

I have a Toshiba L500 laptop, running Windows 7 64 bit edition and the
latest build of Jaws 11.

Basically, what happens is that all of the other windows sounds, including
any music I play through the speakers are coming out just fine, and, in
fact, in wicked surround sound, something I did not expect from such tiny
laptop speakers as these.

Suffice it to say, while all of the other sounds are coming through just
fine, Jaws is coming through all tinny, as though, if I didn't know any
better, it were coming from a modem speaker or something like that.

I'm sure everyone here remembers those dial-up modem sounds?

Well, that's what Jaws sounds like, small and tinny.

Does anyone know if this is standard operating behaviour for Jaws on a
Windows 7 64 bit system, or is there a setting I've overlooked.

I've gone into the properties, and the sounds and all that other stuff, and
have fooled around with equalizer settings and the like, but again, it
doesn't seem to correct the problem.

I have gotten it to perk up, and even base a bit, but again, you still get
that distant sound, as though it were in St. Petersburg, Florida where it
originated. LOL.

Anyway, if anyone knows how to fix this, or even if this is what it's
supposed to sound like, please let me know.

Thanks for any help y'all can give me.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and the Desktop

2010-07-10 Thread Gary Patterson
Recently, my desktop was not accessible with the Windows-key+M or
Windows-key+D. If you will go to the JAWS window, go up to the menu that
begins with Options. If you will arrow up to Manage Application Settings,
there may well be a small number of applications that are marked with a
check box. This means that the programs have been modified with the
configuration manager or specific scripts. You have choices with buttons
that are found when you tap the tab key after the list of applications. If
there are any strange applications, ones that you do not recognize for your
usage, remove them. What you want to do is to remove any unwanted
applications from this list with the buttons that follow the list of
applications.

 Hi Mike.
JAWS review mode shows both my age and how long I have been using JAWS.
 It
is equivalent to the Insert JAWS command which allows you to review the
 screen, thus JAWS Review Mode.

[JAWS-Users] Avast and GMail fix

2010-07-10 Thread Mobeen Iqbal

Hi.

Further to the previous discussions on this topic, i've been testing the
latest version of avast 5.0.594 over the last week and putting together
a list of issues to be fixed. one of the issues people were having is
the scanning of emails for viruses using avast, specifically when
sending email via the gmail service. As most email providers such as
GMail offer virus scanning when emails are received or sent at their
end, for the time being if using gmail you can safely disable the mail
scanning feature of avast. for the more technical among you, it appears
that gmail have changed their certificate settings when using SSL over
the last couple of weeks, so i'm assuming that avast need to do some
more testing before allowing the gmail IP addresses through their
scanner etc.

Here's how to disable the shield.

1. go to ad/remove programs and highlight the avast 5.0 free anti virus
option. Note: i have not provided instructions for accessing add/remove
programs here as too many people have too many different configurations,
but email if you don't know how and i'll be happy to ablije.

2. click on the change option or change/remove in windows xp.
3. when the avast installation window is displayed, highlight the change
option in the list with the arrows and click on next.
4. when the changes screen is displayed, find the mail shield option
with the arrows, and press space to untick it. then, click on next.
5. the email shield will be uninstalled. click on finish to restart your
computer to save changes.

This issue doesn't seem to be affecting other email providers hotmail,
aol etc, though i could be wrong. Its only because GMail use a secure
connection to send your emails.

I hope this has been of some help to people while avast get the issue
fixed. they do know about it, so hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

Mo.

This information is available in the jaws HELP. There, Type ALT-S to

Left Mouse Button Lock (INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH)
This command simulates pressing down the left mouse button and holding

will not speak until INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH is pressed again to unlock the

That's one of 13 results found (in JAWS11). However, dragging and
dropping may not be the easiest way to accomplish what you want to

Hi David,
Not sure exactly what you mean, but if the icons for those 4 versions
of JAWS are on your desktop, you could rename them so that you just
type one character for each of them. Just put your cursor on the icon
on the desktop, press the application key, arrow up to rename, press
enter, type the character you want to use and press enter. Be sure to
name them something that is different than any other icon on the
desktop so that you only have to type the character once. For
example, i have an icon that I access with the comma.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I need shortcut keys for 4 versions of jaws?

2010-07-10 Thread Lennie

Hi Betsy,

I have versions 9, 10 and 11 on my desktop computer. I guess that I
kept the two older versions because sometime there are some quirks
with newer versions and I have to close it and bring up one of the
older version. The settings in all my Jaws versions are pretty much
the same. I usually do a merge from an previous version which brings
all my settings over to the new version.

I also use shortcut keys for each version instead of cluttering up my
desktop. For example, Alt+Ctrl+9 brings up version 9, Alt+Ctrl+X
brings up version 10 and Alt+Ctrl+J brings up version 11.

I will probably uninstall the oldest version when Jaws 12 is
available. You can set the shortcut keys in properties of each version of Jaws.

take care,

Lennie

2010-07-10 Thread Roger Levine

   Hi Betsy,
If something happens to your running version of Jaws and you lose speech,
then having a hot-key for an earlier version allows you to easily
reestablish a possible loss of the hot-key for the troubled version. This
situation has happened to me many times, plus a number of other difficulties
which might be able to be fixed by being able to look at the problem version
quickly.

This information is available in the jaws HELP. There, Type ALT-S to
open the Search window, and then type in what you want to find.

Left Mouse Button Lock (INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH)
This command simulates pressing down the left mouse button and
holding it. Once pressed, the JAWS cursor can be moved with the arrow
keys. JAWS will not speak until INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH is pressed again
to unlock the left mouse button. This command can be used to drag
items from one location and drop them in another.

That's one of 13 results found (in JAWS11). However, dragging and
dropping may not be the easiest way to accomplish what you want to
perform. Copy and then paste elsewhere may work out easier.

[JAWS-Users] how to set jaws speed for various applications

2010-07-10 Thread Tatyana

Hello all,
I can't find the way how to set certain level of JAWS speed for various
applications. I'd like JAWS speaking fast when I browse folders and files
on my computer, but from other hand I'd like it speak slower when I'm
reading e- mails, for example. I know I can change the speed on the fly but
it's quite annoying when I lose the setting just right when I escape the
program.

Thanks for your help.

As far as I can figure you just press your Jaws cursor key and arrow up and

this helps but, I hope it did! LOL Take care.

Recently, my desktop was not accessible with the Windows-key+M or

menu that
begins with Options. If you will arrow up to Manage Application
Settings,
there may well be a small number of applications that are marked
with a
check box. This means that the programs have been modified with
the
configuration manager or specific scripts. You have choices with
buttons

there are any strange applications, ones that you do not

Re: [JAWS-Users] www.guidedog.org

2010-07-10 Thread Lisa Belville

Hi, Beverly.

I'm using JAWS 10 with Windows XP Home and IE 8. I'm having the same issue.

I needed to turn off forms mode and review the page with the JAWS cursor.

The choices corresponding to each check box are as follows:
1. Print; 2. Large Print; 3. Braille; 4. E-mail; 5. CD ROM.

There are three groupings of check boxes with each of these choices because
they're wanting your first, second, and then last resort choice.

However, I cannot interact with these checkboxes while out of forms mode. I
can go back into forms mode and find this part of the form and check the
corresponding box as long as I know which choice I want.

It would be nice to give their web master a technical reason this isn't
working with JAWS. I noticed that JAWS refers to all forms as mouse over
links, regardless of the type of form, i.e. edit or check box.

I'm a GDF grad, so I'd be happy to pass the info along as soon as I can give
a specific reason for the inaccessible forms.

I've tried saving as a text document and still there's nothing

Any thoughts on what to do here?

I have a very old version of Openbook, like version 6.0, I think. I don't
know if it had that capability.

So there is something there, it's just not visible to JAWS?

It's a graphic. Do you have some sort of scanning software that you can
use to scan it like kurzwell?

That's what it sounds like. It all depends on how it was originally
created. I've had that same experience with online menus.

It doesn't work in this case because the choices associated with the check
boxes aren't labeled.

however, the yes or no answers do read fine as long as you're not in forms
mode. You just need to explore with the arrow keys or the paragraph reading

keys.

This is just me, but I only go into forms mode to input something in a combo

box or edit field and then I leave forms mode so I can explore the rest of
the page. This way I can find out what types of information is needed and
what types of commands I'll need to use in order to fill out the form
correctly.

I have never been on this site but in those situations I have always got
out
of forms mode and just read the previous lines or next lines. I have also
Route jaws to pc cursor and just read the window that way to find out
 info.
Again, seeing as I have never been on this site, I presume it might not
 work
but you can give it a try.

Hi guys, I'm trying to fill out the online application, but JAWS is
not reading the checkboxes. What should I do? I'm using JAWS 11, along
 with Vista Home.
