I'm using XP Pro, JFW 12, IE 8. Though I think I had this with
  Firefox too sometimes.
When I log on to a web page, it loads up and ttells me 100%, the
status bar says "done", but I arrow down, I get the http://www.
whatever. And I find I'm in the address bar. It'll do this even if I
access it from a favorite. Sometimes you can refresh the screen and
then Shift TAB out but not always. Mostly when you Shift tab or tab
it just says nothing, arrowing down just says blank.

Is there a hot key that will put focus on the web page by chance? Or
if you know of any other fix by turning something off or on even. It
gets quite annoying and to get focus to the browser you have to use
the Jaws cursor and try to find something that isn't a link when you
click it.

  Thanks.

Hi Listers,

I recently installed Firefox at work because Jaws 10 with IE 7 just
didn't work to fill out a number of forms that I'm responsible for.
Fortunately, Firefox is doing the job. There are 2 things I can't
figure out with Firefox though.

1. I can't figure out how to turn on the feature to have web addresses
that I go to often auto complete when I start typing the address.

2. In IE what Jaws calls combo boxes are called list boxes in Firefox,
and they seem to operate differently. In Firefox, the only way I can
find to select an item is to hit enter on it. That's not a problem -
although I don't know what will happen when I come across a
multi-select list box. The problem is that after I select an item Jaws
doesn't recognize it when I read through the page to check my work.
Jaws just says "list box collapsed." My work around has been to unload
firefox and go back to IE so that Jaws can read the selections in the
combo boxes. This isn't a big deal, but if there's a better way to
handle this, I'd love to know.

Thank you,
Shari

[JAWS-Users] Ie 9 beta

2010-11-18 Thread Holger Fiallo
This is what Microsoft has to say about IE 9 beta and accessibility technology.
Suggest you read all notes on IE 9 beta at microsoft.com before you install it
with JAWS. This is from Microsoft.com web information.
Internet Explorer 9 Beta and Assistive Technology
At this time Internet Explorer 9 is not fully functional with some Assistive
Technology.

Web pages appear blank when using screen review commands such as the JAWS
cursor or Window-Eyes Mouse Pointer.
This is caused by the use Direct2D for rendering. There is no workaround at
this time, but the Internet Explorer team is working with Assistive Technology
vendors to resolve this issue.

Font Smoothing from screen magnifiers such as ZoomText no longer works in
Internet Explorer 9.
Magnification still works, but font smoothing does not. There is no workaround
for this issue.

Text in edit boxes is unable to be edited when using Window-Eyes screen reader.
Text within edit boxes cannot be read by Window-Eyes when Browse Mode is off.
There is no workaround at this time but we are working with GW Micro to resolve
this issue.

Problems reading web content using JAWS Virtual PC mode.
When reading web content using JAWS Virtual PC mode, there are two issues you
might notice. One issue is that some webpage content and some form controls
such as radio buttons or check boxes are missing. The other issue you might
see is multiple blank lines and space characters when reading webpages. Using
Compatibility View can resolve the issue. To turn on Compatibility View, press
Alt+D and tab to the Compatibility View button, or press Alt+T, v from the
Internet Explorer menus.

Notification Bar popups are not read by all Assistive Technology software.
The new Internet Explorer 9 Notification bar replaces the Internet Explorer 8
Information Bar. Many notifications are available in the notification bar
including downloads, blocked popups, password manager, and add-on
notifications. Not all Assistive Technology are able to detect that a
notification bar is present, or read the bar if focus is placed in it.

As a partial workaround, you can turn on Internet Explorer sounds to get
notified that a notification bar is present (Tools Menu - Internet Options -
Advanced - check Play System sounds). To place focus in the notification bar
please press Alt+N.

Internet Explorer Sounds are off by Default
Sounds have been turned off in Internet Explorer9. You can turn them back on
by going to Tools Menu - Internet Options - Advanced - check Play System
sounds.

Hotkey changes
A few hotkeys have changed in Internet Explorer 9:

a.. Ctrl+J now will open the Internet Explorer download manager instead of
opening feeds. You can open feeds in Internet Explorer 9 with Ctrl+G.
b.. Ctrl+E now places focus in the address bar because the search box has
been combined with the address bar. When you press Ctrl+E, focus is placed in
the address bar with a question mark and space already populated for you. You
can search from the Internet Explorer 9 address bar the same way you searched
from the Internet Explorer 8 search box with the exception that in Internet
Explorer 9 beta you can’t change the search provider as is described below in
Issue 589118.
Site Mode and Pinning
When a site is pinned to the taskbar, the site icon is displayed at top-left
region of the frame, clearly indicating the site’s presence. If the icon is

Yes.
Disable all will do what it says. Disable all the programs, even if you
just checked them.
For fastest start up, you will want to uncheck as many programs as possible.
Windows will make sure that a minimum of programs are automatically checked
for it to run.
Then make sure your antivirus is checked.
Uncheck everything else.
Then, if you find something does not work right, you can always go back in
and check that program to start up.
Blessings,
Tom

It didn't work for me, but this is what Microsoft said.

Configure the spellchecker in Windows Mail
Follow these steps to access and customize the spell checking settings
and options in Windows Mail:

a.. Once you are inside Windows Mail, click on the Tools menu
 b.. Choose "Options"
c.. When the Options dialog opens, click on the "Spelling" tab: this is
where Windows Mail centralizes all available spell checking settings you
can configure.
d.. The first option these accessible through the "Always check spelling
before sending" checkbox: if checked, Windows Mail will not let you send
an email message before warning you of any grammatical mistakes or
spelling errors that may have caught.
e.. Windows Mail gives you access to spelling exceptions, listed under
the "When checking spelling, always ignore" section:

. If the "Words in UPPERCASE" checkbox is checked, the Windows Mail
spellchecker will disregard any spelling issues found in uppercase words
(like acronyms).

. If "Words with numbers" is checked, it will likewise ignore words made
in part of numbers (that are likely industry-specific words or technical
jargon).

. The "The original text in a reply or forward" checkbox is checked by
default: by this, Windows Mail means that it will skip checking the
spelling and grammar of emails you receive, or the portion of the email
you send that you have not typed yourself when you reply to an email or
forward it on to someone else.

. Finally, the "Internet Addresses" is also checked by default; when it
is enabled, Windows Mail will ignore Internet addresses that may contain
word in its spell checker.
f.. The last spell checking option Windows Mail offers concerns
language: it is by default set to your operating system's current
language, but can be changed to one of the foreign language dictionaries
that ship with Windows Mail: English, French (France), German (Germany),
or Spanish (International Sort).
g.. Once you're done configuring the Windows Mail spellchecker, click on
the OK button to accept the new settings, and return to your emails.
These are all the options Windows Mail offers for checking the spelling

Hi curtis,
Windows XP and both JAWS 11 and 12 here and all is well.
Maybe it was a momentary glitch?
At 04:44 AM 11/16/2010, you wrote:

JAWS 11 and 10 both crash or won't read anything on the website. It
worked perfectly on Friday.
Please let me know if it is just me or if maybe something has change on

Re: [JAWS-Users] MSconfig turning of start up programs

2010-11-18 Thread Tom Vos
No, you will disable all the programs.
When you hit enter on that button nothing will be checked in the list.
You might use this feature if you have a long list of programs that boot at
start up. After you have disabled all, you probably want to go back and
check certain programs.
Your anti virus program, for example.
And on my laptop, I have checked the web cam program we use.

Tom

Tom,
I want to make certain I have this correct.
If I uncheck an item in the start up page, and I tab to the disable all
button, will it only disable that one I unchecked?

Blessings,
Tom

If I select the disable all, will it just disable the program I have just

This is true, I very much agree especially having worked on a windows 7 this
past weekend and enabled windows mail. The question is according to what I
noticed doing a Google search windows mail contains it's own spell checking
program, is this true or did I simply misunderstand the information I was
reading and another peace of software is actually required?

The best person to ask is possibly you Pauline. Does your spell checking
feature in windows mail work properly?

Re: [JAWS-Users] MSconfig turning of start up programs

2010-11-18 Thread Rick Justice

Hi Russ,
If you tab to the, disable all, it will disable all items from starting up.
Once you have disabled an item, tab to the apply, and spacebar that.
Next, tab to the close, and spacebar that, you will be prompted to restart
the computer, spacebar that as well.
When the computer restarts, you will get a System Configuration Utility
dialogue,
tab to the checkbox, and spacebar that, then tab to the okay , and spacebar
that and you are done.

HTH,
Rick Justice
