[JAWS-Users] daily information

2010-12-26 Thread David Ferrin
Daily Tip:
Wireless Network Lockdown

Anyone who's experienced the headaches associated with stringing CAT 5 cable up
and down the office understands the convenience of using wireless access points
to set up a wireless network. Unfortunately, the dangers of an unsecured
wireless network can easily offset the benefits of connecting computers without
messy Ethernet cable. Without the proper security measures, your wireless
network could be susceptible to the wiles of a wardriver.
The term wardriving originated with the 1983 movie WarGames, in which a
computer hacker dialed phone numbers to find a system to break into with his
computer. Modern-day hackers have modified this practice and drive through
cities using a wireless laptop (or any other device capable of using a wireless
signal) to detect and infiltrate wireless networks. To protect your network
from wardrivers, it's imperative to enable wireless encryption on all of your
network's wireless routers and access points. If your networking hardware
doesn't offer encryption, it's not worth owning in the first place. Wireless
networking products with built-in firewalls are even better. Finally, configure
your access points so they will only grant access to your network according to
your networked computers' specific MAC (Media Access Control) addresses.

  Daily Term:
logic circuit

A circuit that performs a processing or controlling function in a computer, in
contrast to memory circuits which merely store data.
David Ferrin
Most people don't know what they're doing and a lot of them are really good at
it.

[JAWS-Users] Vista nd Win7 Windows warning when installation

2010-12-26 Thread Russ Hubley
Hi everyone,

I have seen the below with the last several Jaws 10-12 with my Vista and
Win7 laptops. A tech talked me through this, but I am wondering if any of
you have seen this. I am using Microsoft security essentials. I also saw the
same thing when I had AVG installed.

In the Jaws set up procedures, after the computer has restarted, the
installation literally stops. I had sighted assistance and found that
Windows was saying that some of the files I was trying to install were not
compatible with Windows.

I entered on the option to install anyway.

As I said, a tech from Freedom Scientific walked me through with this,
however, since I was trying to move along as quickly as possible, I didn't
take note about how to do this. The tech acted as if this was rather normal
and knew right away what to do.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Thank you, Russ

[JAWS-Users] Jaws not reading desktop icons after video intercept update

2010-12-26 Thread Mobeen Iqbal

Hi,

I've been experiencing a rather strange issue lately. Recently, i
installed a new NVIDIA graphics card in my PC. There were initially no
problems with jaws that i could see. However recently, i've been getting
an MFC virtual viewer application error when ever i try to use the
virtual viewer to virtualize the screen or display skype messages so i
can copy and paste etc. also, jaws isn't reading my desktop icons at
all. I tried reinstalling video intercept (the latest version), but no
joy. before i reinstalled video intercept, the only issue was the
virtual viewer, after installing the video intercept the desktop icons
won't read, but the viewer works when it wants too. Do i have to
uninstall jaws and video intercept, then reinstall? any ideas greatly
apreciated.

Many thanks,

Mo.

Although I can't find my Jaws 10 and 11 CDs so am using 9 which also does
not play well with iTunes, and so can't help you, I can share your
frustration!
Wouldn't you think sometime between about Jaws 7 and now someone would have
made iTunes accessible and easy to use? Either Apple maybe with an alternate
logically organized and simplified site or maybe Freedom Scientific working
with the current site?

We have a simplified already accessible search engine like google by means
of the Research feature which is already about as accessible as a Web site
can be but are left unable to use something like iTunes, something one might
expect a lot of blind people with a full spectrum of computer skills to want
to access.

Can they be collaborating with Apple to drive us from Microsoft and Windows
or maybe to change over to another screen reader? Surely not!

What ever the business strategy might be isn't obvious to me at least but I
think I am beginning to get some sense of it.

If you do find an answer please share it with the rest of us.

Have you tried it on other CD's? have you never had success with that
keystroke on any of them?

Hello:
I understand it tells you that in the keyboard help but when I press
CTRL
insert T nothing is being echoed? Why? This is using the latest build
of jfw
11.

Hi.
I'm using JFW 11 and Control+insert+T works with WMP 12 in Win7.
It shouldn't tell you the artist name. It should tell you the name of
the
song.
as it says in keyboard help, it says the title of the playing media.
I don't know about JAWS 12 but, this is not a WMP problem.

Thank's,

Adi.

Hello:

I am just going through the mailing list I am subscribed to only to
get a
resounding you cannot do it and jaws-users is the last of the
moheekens.
Lets hope someone here has an answer. I am listening to a song and I
forget
who sings it is there a keystroke that will echo that information? I
remember CTRL insert t use to work in earlier versions, so does it
just
plane not work in jfw 12/wmp12?

Thanks.

Hi,
can anybody give me some pointers using JFW 12 with latest iTunes?
I am trying to obtain an app from the app store but I can not read
the screen except via the Jaws cursor.

What exactly do the Jaws scripts do?
Thanks for any help.
Max.
