Hi All,

In addition to the full links below, here is the list of
changes/enhancements in the December update.

Regards,

Enhancements in JAWS 13.0.638 (December 2011)

The following is a list of items addressed or added between the final
JAWS 13.0.527 release and the JAWS 13.0.638 posting.

JAWS
*Resolved issues with the Research It sports scores lookup sources
where the expected results were not being returned whether you entered a
specific date or not.
*Addressed an issue with the Wiktionary lookup source not returning a
definition if searching for a word containing uppercase letters.
*Resolved an issue with the Time Search lookup source for Research It
only returning the list of time formats you can use, however no actual
results for your search were returned.
*Updated the JAWS Help system to make it easier for users to locate
firewall and ILM multi-user network authorization information. These
topics can be found under Network JAWS and in the Index.
*JAWS no longer says selected when using SHIFT+LEFT ARROW or
SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW in ribbons to move between groups.
*When performing a Say All using a setting other than the default Line
without pauses, addressed an issue where JAWS would read the last line,
sentence, or paragraph continuously until CTRL was pressed to silence
speech.
*JAWS is now less verbose when announcing the start or end of ARIA
regions on Web pages.
*When using Convenient OCR, the resulting text now remains available if
you switch between the JAWS and Invisible Cursor. The text is removed
when you activate the PC Cursor.
*Addressed an issue where JAWS was not properly speaking the Username
edit field on the Talking Communities Webinar client login screen.
*Resolved a customer reported issue where JAWS would speak part of the
word just typed when pressing BACKSPACE and Typing Echo is set to
Characters and Words.

Adobe Acrobat
*Resolved an intermittent issue where JAWS would unexpectedly close
when doing a JAWS Find in a PDF document.

Eclipse
*Resolved issues using JAWS with the Rational Team Concert plug-in.

Eudora
*Addressed an issue of JAWS speaking extraneous information when
pressing CTRL+D to delete a message.

Lotus Notes
*Resolved a reported issue where SameTime conversations were not
refreshing.

Microsoft Excel
*Addressed several instances where braille was not tracking properly in
Line Mode.
*Monitor cell information is now shown in braille as a flash message.
*Resolved an issue where JAWS was not properly reading the controls in
the Format Chart Area dialog box.
*Resolved an issue where the Total column option in Quick Settings was
not remaining on the same setting with a braille display connected.
*After pressing EQUALS on a cell to begin a formula and then selecting
a range of cells, resolved an issue where JAWS would not properly
announce the selection.
*Addressed issues of controls in the Sort dialog box not reading
correctly.
*Resolved double speaking issues encountered when entering data into a
cell.

Microsoft Internet Explorer
*When on the last line of a multi-line edit field and Forms Mode is not
active, resolved an issue where pressing the END key would jump to the
beginning of the field instead of the end of the line as expected.
*Pressing INSERT+SHIFT+V no longer opens the Personalized Web Settings
dialog box. You can configure personalized Web settings using Quick
Settings (INSERT+V).
*Resolved an issue where alt text in links was not being spoken when

hi:
yep.

the Text Links Show option in Quick Settings was set to Title.
*After using SHIFT+ENTER to open a link in a new window, when you close
the window, focus now returns to the link you opened. Previously, JAWS
would place you back at the top of the page.
*Resolved an issue with the Page Refresh option in Quick Settings.

Microsoft Outlook
*JAWS is now much more responsive when navigating messages in Outlook
2010 that contain graphics.
*Resolved an issue where pressing ENTER on a button in the spell
checker would not work unless you first used INSERT+3 to pass the
keystroke through. Activating buttons with the SPACEBAR worked
correctly.
*Resolved reported issues of JAWS not reading reliably while navigating
in the Calendar using the Day View.
*When navigating text you are editing in the Signatures and Stationary
dialog box in Outlook 2007 and 2010, addressed an issue where JAWS would

[JAWS-Users] Unable to Select or Change Options On Google Search SettingsPage

2011-12-13 Thread Gerald Levy

Hi list. Using JAWS 9 and IE 8, I am somehow no longer able to change or
select any options on the Google search settings page under options on the
Google home page. For example, under the heading Google Instant Predictions,
the words On and Off are displayed, but there is apparently no way to select
either of these options. Under the Results Per Page heading, the numbers 10,
20, 30, 40, 50 and 100 are shown, but there is no way to select the option you
want. And when I hit Space or Enter on the Save Preferences button, nothing
happens. I have cookies enabled, so that's not the issue. JAWS announces that
there are no check boxes or radio boxes on the page. I never had problems
with the Google Search Settings page before. Previously, the settings could be
changed by selecting the appropriate check box or radio box, but JAWS either no
longer recognizes these boxes on the Search Settings page, or they have
otherwise been eliminated. Did Google change the Search Settings page so that
it is no longer JAWS accessible? Or am I missing something? Can someone
explain what the heck is going on with the Google Search Settings page? Thanks
for any help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Select or Change Options On Google Search SettingsPage

2011-12-13 Thread Dan Rossi

Gerald,

I posted about this very issue a couple of days ago. Although it seems
that you are not modifying those spiffy new slider bars on the google
options page, you actually are. There is just no feedback. On the
Instant Predictions slider, home sets it to on, and end sets it to off.
On the results per page slider, I don't remember, but using the arrow
keys, or page up and down keys changes the value. I confirmed this with
the help of my wife's eyes. She let's me borrow them occasionally.

Having said all that, I've been unable to get my settings to stick. I
even set my security and privacy settings to off just to make sure that
nothing was blocking google from dropping cookies onto my machine. No
joy.

What I did find is that I can construct a URL with some of my preferences
built into the URL, then bookmark that URL and use it instead of just
going to www.google.com

Here is an example of a URL that sets instant to off, auto complete to
off, and results per page to 50.

http:www.google.com/?ion=0complete=0num=50

If you go to that URL, then bookmark it in your favorites, you can then
just go to your bookmarks any time you want to go to google, and you will
get a page with no instant, no autocomplete, and 50 results per page set
for you.

I haven't figured out some of the other preferences yet, but will work on
it when I get more time.

2011-12-13 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
It's not just you nor is it your screen reader. I've experienced the same with
Jfw 13 as well as System Access.

Yes the explanation simply put would be that Google has changed their code to
the detriment of accessibility. I submitted their accessibility contact form
for reporting problems yesterday with little expectation of results. Perhaps
if others complain they'll augment their changes improving the situation once
again.

So you now have to use the up and down arrows to set options on the Search
Settings page? Even if this is now the case, I still can't activate the
Save button, so how do you actually save your preferences? Sorry I wasn't
paying attention to your original post about this issue. Why does Google
insist on making its web site, Chrome browser and other services so blind
unfriendly?

[JAWS-Users] using the alva mpo braille notetaker with Jaws 12

2011-12-13 Thread André van Deventer
Hi all

I am trying to use the Alva MPO braille display on Jaws 13 on a Windows 7
machine.

When using it with Jaws 12 on an XP machine everything works fine.

The problem is that you have to install active sync on your computer in
order for this machine and the computer to talk to each other at all.

The MPO uses windows CE.net 4.1 which as far as I understand it is not
supported by the replacement for active sync.

Is there any possible way to sync a windows CE.net 4.1 machine with a
windows 7 system? And no the MPO cannot be upgraded unfortunately.

Andre

2011-12-13 Thread Steve
BlankI have a client using Jaws 13.0.638 latest update on a Win 7 64-bit
machine. Jaws will not read emails in Windows Live Mail Version 15 (the one
with the ribbon menu), unless she first opens the message and routes the PC
to the Jaws cursor.

So, I have tried repairing Jaws 13 to no avail. I
un-installed and re-installed Windows Live Mail 15 with the same results.

Does Jaws read emails properly for those with a similar setup? If not, does
anybody know if there is a way to snag the previous version of Windows Live
Mail 14.0.8086 I think it is? I know several who use that successfully on a
Win 7 machine with Jaws 12 and 13.

Gerald,

I posted about this very issue a couple of days ago. Although it seems
that you are not modifying those spiffy new slider bars on the google
options page, you actually are. There is just no feedback. On the
Instant Predictions slider, home sets it to on, and end sets it to off. On
the results per page slider, I don't remember, but using the arrow keys,
or page up and down keys changes the value. I confirmed this with the
help of my wife's eyes.

BlankI have a client using Jaws 13.0.638 latest update on a Win 7 64-bit
machine. Jaws will not read emails in Windows Live Mail Version 15 (the
one
with the ribbon menu), unless she first opens the message and routes the
PC

to the Jaws cursor.

So, I have tried repairing Jaws 13 to no avail. I un-installed and
re-installed Windows Live Mail 15 with the same results.

Does Jaws read emails properly for those with a similar setup? If not,
does
anybody know if there is a way to snag the previous version of Windows
Live
Mail 14.0.8086 I think it is? I know several who use that successfully on
a

Win 7 machine with Jaws 12 and 13.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Select or Change Options On Google Search SettingsPage

2011-12-13 Thread David Bailes
Hi Gerald,
there are a couple of problems with the recent changes to the search settings
page:
1. Google have included code on the page to make the sliders and the buttons
accessible, but the code for the sliders doesn't work. Presumably this will be
fixed at some stage.
2. Google haven't provided any alternative for older screen readers or web
browsers that don't understand the code which makes the sliders and the
buttons accessible.

My understanding is that once google have fixed the code, the sliders should be
accessible if you're using jaws 11 and above, and IE 8 and above.
For Jaws 10 and below and IE 8, jaws doesn't recognize either the sliders or
the buttons, and hence can't go into forms mode.
One work around is to switch the browser mode off (insert + z). You can then
tab to the controls, and interact with them, although the sliders won't read
their correct value, even when they're fixed.
To set the sliders in the absence of audio feedback:
1. google instant predictions slider: for off press home, for on press end.
2. safe search filters: for no filtering press home, for moderate press home,
then right arrow, for strict press end.
3. For results per page: for 10 press home, then press right arrow the
appropriate number of times to get to 20, 30, 30, 50, and finally 100.

Note that you can only set results per page if instant predictions are turned
off.

best wishes,
David.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS Word 2007 and printing address labels

2011-12-13 Thread Patti

I don't know if this will help you, but try these
Patti

Mail Merge steps

Before starting to use the Mail Merge feature in Microsoft word 2003 using
an Excel data sheet as a source document, a person should already know how
to work in dialog boxes and menus. It is also important to know the size
and type of label that will be used.

You need to make a small configuration change within Word before you begin
using the Mail Merge wizard. Bring up the Tools menu by

1 pressing alt-T and then

2 press the letter O to bring up the options dialog box.

3 Move focus to the General tab.

4 Use tab key to move to the Confirm conversion at open option and if it is
not checked then press spacebar to check it.

5 tab to OK button and press enter.

6 With that step completed, you are ready to create your labels.

Start the mail merge process in Word 2003 using the steps listed below:

1. Open Word.

2. Press Alt-T to bring up the tools menu, press E to move to Letters and
Mailings, and press enter on the Mail Merge choice.

In excel 07 press alt m

3. In the Mail Merge dialog box you will find a group of radio buttons for
selecting the type of document for the merge. Use down arrow key to move to
the labels choice. This option is used for creating address labels. Press
enter on the labels choice.

4. Use the tab key to move to the Next: Starting document choice and press
enter.

5. Under Select starting document, select the radio button for Change
document layout. Use up and down arrow keys in the radio buttons to find
that choice.

6 Use tab key one time to move to the label options button and press
spacebar.

7. Select the manufacturer and paper type from the lists in this dialog box
such as Avery Standard 5160 Address.

8 Use tab to move to OK and press enter.

9. Use the tab key to move to the Next: Select recipients choice and press
enter.

10. There will be a list of radio buttons shown. Use up and down arrow keys
to the Use an existing list choice. This option assumes that you are using
address information stored in another file such as an Excel worksheet.

11. Tab to the Browse button and press spacebar.

12 Locate your spreadsheet containing address information and open it.

13. Select the table containing the address information. If entire
spreadsheet is in the edit combo box then just tab to OK and press enter on
the button.

14 If you get a conversion confirmation dialog box at this point then use
the MS Excel worksheet choice by using up and down arrow keys in the list
of radio buttons.

15 tab to the OK button and press enter.

16. You will get a list of recipients. If focus is not in the list then use
tab key to move to it. All recipients' names in the list will be checked.

17 Use up and down arrow keys to move to individual recipient names and use
spacebar to uncheck those that you don't want included in the mail merge.

18 Use tab key to move to the OK button and press spacebar.

19. If a table opens in your document and the PC focus is moved there then
use function key 6 to move the focus back to your task pane. If you were
not taken out of the task pane then you don't have to press function key 6.

20 Use the tab key to move to and press enter on the Next: Arrange your
labels choice.

*I skip steps 21 through 26. If these steps don't work, then do steps 21
through 26.

1, Up arrow to address

2, press enter

3, Up arrow 4 times to Joshua Randall jr

5, Press enter

21. Use tab key to move to the More items choice and press enter.

22. You will get a list of fields that can be included in the merge. If the
focus is not in the list then use tab key to move to the list.

23 Use up and down arrow keys to move from selection to selection in the
list. For each selection you want included in the merge, select it by
moving to it

24 tab to the insert button and press spacebar. Continue selecting fields
you want included and using the insert button to choose them. These should
be the fields that contain the recipients' names and addresses.

26 When finished then tab to the Close Choice and press enter.

27. Press the function key 6 to move from the task pane to the document for
formatting.

28. Format the first label as you want it to appear when it is printed. You
only need to format the first label. The field names are in brackets. Do
not remove the opening or closing brackets of a field name as they indicate
the starting and closing position for the text that is to appear in that
field.

You can place spaces between the closing bracket of one field and the
opening bracket of another field, you can put a comma after the closing
bracket and then a space, you can also move a field to a new line by moving
to the opening bracket of the field name and pressing the enter key. If the
FirstName field follows the LastName field and you want to move the
Firstname field to be located before the LastName field then move to

You might consider setting a shortcut keystroke for an often used symbol if
you are using Word 2010. Freedom Scientific tech support made an Eloq.SBL
file available to replace the default one, which makes it possible for JAWS
to identify many more symbols in the Word symbols list. Once you find a
given symbol that you need to frequently use, you can set up a shortcut key
for it. This applies to the Eloquence synthesizer only.

The Eloq.SBL file is found by opening your Programs or All Programs group,
expanding the version of JAWS, expanding the Explore JAWS submenu, and
opening the Explore JAWS settings menu item. It is a good idea to use F2
when focus is on the Eloq.SBL file and add a .BAK to the end of the file
name to make it a backup. The replacement Eloq.SBL file can be downloaded
from my dropbox by using the following link:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3951772/eloq.sbl

The new Eloq.SBL file should be put in the same Shared Settings folder where
the file being replaced resides. If you want to review all the entries for
symbols under the American English group of the file, you will need to open
the file using Notepad. Once in Notepad, you can use a Find command for the
word English and you should be taken to the American English group. There
are thousands of entries in the group. Each entry gives a symbol number,
the Unicode number that represents the symbol and the name of the symbol.
You can also search for a specific symbol and quickly find its Unicode
representation. For example, the Maltese cross is represented by a U+2720,
the Star of David as a U+2721, etc. Here is a link to a file that contains
a table showing the hex and decimal values for symbols. With the document
open in Word, you can perform a Find command to search for a symbol and
check column six for its decimal representation that can be typed in by
using the Alt key and the number pad. The numbers need to be used from the
number pad. Once the new .SBL file has been placed in the Shared Settings
folder, you should be able to better read the items in the Word symbols
list.

Here is how you can add a shortcut key in Word 2010 to the Maltese cross:

1.Use Alt followed by N followed by U followed by M when in Word
2010 to move into the symbols page of the symbol dialog box. Tab to the

From combo box and use up or down arrow key to select Unicode (hex). It is

important to make that selection for all symbols to show correctly. Use tab
or shift+tab to the font edit combo box and press A until you find the Arial
Unicode MS font. The symbol might be listed under a different font on
another system but I found it under the Arial Unicode MS font on my system.
Tab to the subset and press D until you find the Dingbats item. Tab into
the list of symbols. I had to use right arrow about twenty-eight times
until I found the Maltese cross. Tab to the Shortcut key button and press
spacebar. In the Press new shortcut key box, use a keystroke that

[JAWS-Users] MS Word 2007 and printing labels

2011-12-13 Thread Brian Mackey
Dear Jerry Martin,

Here are the steps to print address labels in MS Word 2007.

1. Select what type of label you want to use

2. Select if you want to do just one label or a whole page of labels

3. If it is just one label, type in the edit box for the address. Then, tab
down until you hear Print. Once in the print dialog box, select what type of
printer to use and hit Ok.

4. If you are doing more than one label, tab over until you hear Create. It
will create a new document with the template to enter the addresses. To
enter new addresses, hit tab after entering an address.

5. When you are done entering the addresses, hit CTRL+P to go into the Print
dialog box. Select the printer and hit Ok.

Sincerely,

Brian Mackey

Re: [JAWS-Users] What does AFK mean?

2011-12-13 Thread Flor Lynch
Have you got 'detect languages' checked? [it is in JAWS Settings Center;
type lang; and you will see it (checked or unchecked) in the search
results.] If so, then I'm wondering if eloquence is saying 'AFK' for
Afrikaans, because perhaps the person typing has their keyboard language
preference set to that language.

Hi folks

I'm just very curious!

I received a file today saved in docx format. When reading it in Word
2010
at the beginning the speech synth which is eloquence says AFK [as far as
I

can make it out] each time you down arrow.

However, it does not show on my braille display at all!

Does anyone know what this means? I'm just curious.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Keystroke for Symbols List

2011-12-13 Thread inthane
there is a parallel in older windows versions, called the character viewer,
it can be used to select and insert symbols into a document.

I used it once years back and had minimal success since it was written for
visual use, and didn't merge well with a screen reader.

if its in the newer windows versions I have no clue, but if you queried the
Microsoft database I bet they can find out along with notes on how to use
it.

It is a JAWS, not a Windows, feature. JAWS has to be running for it to be
invoked with JAWSKey+4. .

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS Office 2007 and printing address labels

2011-12-13 Thread Tom Vos
Jerry,
I assume you want to use mail merge to insert data from a database
If you want just a page of all the same labels, you can use Alt M, then l to
get into the labels dialogue box and check the appropriate radio button.
If you want to mail merge, here is an outline for that.

Mail Merge in Word 2007
Choose Alt M for the mailings tab.
Then tab to mail merge.

Start Mail merge
Choose labels

Alt M
Select Recipients
Choose the source for the information.
Under that option you need to find the file that contains your records. In
my situation, that is an Access database.

Then go back to the menu and find the option for, Edit recipient list
Here I tab down to the filter link. When I enter on that I get a table like
I was used to using inWord 2000, where I can enter the record number and the
range that I want to print.

Alt M
Go to the, Insert merge fields group box
As name, address, city, state and zip are selected, they appear in the main
document below.
User needs to use enter to move down a line, add the comma after the city
and the space before the zip
No key command, so use Alt M, and tab through to the insert merge fields
group box each time.

Then go to the Update labels button
Hit enter and all the labels fill in.

[JAWS-Users] Virtual Ribbon menu speech repetition

2011-12-13 Thread Brad Dunsé
Word 2010. Windoes 7 64 bit. JFW 13. More times
than not when using the Virtual Ribbon, if for
example I go to Insert, then to Text, when
arrowing down from there all it says is Text
button drop down grid everytime I down arrow.
The only way I've found to rid it is to unload
Jaws and fire it back up. It will reoccur shortly
thereafter. Refreshing the screen does not affect
it. I've noticed it does not do this when the
Virtual Ribbon is turned off, all items are
accessible then. It is not limited to justthe the
text menu options but just about any last menu
level. I'd hoped perhaps the new update might
have the remedy. If anyone had this occur and/or has a clue, I'd appreciat it.
