[JAWS-Users] lost my authorization key
This is strange, for some unknown reason my lap top lost it's key. I have done nothing at all other than plug or remove a USB sound card which I do all of the time without any issues. Now tonight it has decided to run in demo mode. I hate to pull down another key off of the server since there should be no reason to do that in my opinion at least. Any suggestions will be welcome. [JAWS-Users] Password Managers
Hi Rich, I changed the subject line to better reflect the topic, and you can give this a try: http://www.blind-computing.com/personal/pages/passkeeper.html A password manager or vault, is simply a program to store your passwords safely on your computer. I use the above referenced program to store mine. HTH, Richard Q. Several strategies for dealing with passwords are: Use the same password everywhere but add the name of the site to the end of the password. Use a password vault. That way you only have to remember one password, then you can grab the password out of the vault, and you don't have to remember each individual password, or username for that fact. And, you can make the passwords extremely complex since you don't have to remember them. You could do the whole spreadsheet thing. Also, one thing I did years ago, when I got frustrated because any username I came up with was never accepted on every web site, there are only so many combinations of Dan rossi DRossi DRossiBirthDay blah blah blah. I just recreated all my accounts with a nonsense word that no one else would ever use. Now I have the same username on every account. Which is helpful. Also, you can use grade two braille as a great way to come up with some very funky passwords. Lots of numbers and punctuation marks and no dictionary words. -- Blue skies. Re: [JAWS-Users] lost my authorization key
Hi, Still this authorization procedure doesn't make too much sense. My better half is a low vision person working with ZoomText. If she needs to make any major changes to her system there is a way given by AISquared to bring her authorization key back to the manufacturer server and after she is done with any hardware changes/upgrades she can reactivate Zoomtext without losing any of her activations keys. My system is setup with 4 operating system each being installed on its own hard disk. This system alone eats up 3 JAWS' activations since I have to install this keys on each hard drives, one for Windows XP, second for Windows 7 and third for Windows 8. Now for Xmas I got a new BD/DVD/CDROM for my computer. After mounting this thing into my computer JAWS noticed my hardware change and decided to run as a demo and wanted me to update my authorization so I did but my 3 authorization keys are gone. I know that FS offers some dongle to authorize their JAWS running on a given system and this could be a solution but I don't want to carry with me another small device and worry all the time about losing this thing don't mention the additional cost for this dongle. Re: [JAWS-Users] off: antivirus
Ok, no anti-virus program is foolproof. In 2011, MSSE was probably the best-rated free anti-virus program and it performed on par or better than most of the commercial anti-virus programs. It doesn't have nag screens as some of the other free AV products do, and it is totally accessible, unlike Norton or McAfee. I think Trendmicro was pretty accessible, when I evaluated it, but that was three versions back. I just read an article by Fred Langda of Windows Secrets on MSSE. In summary, he stated that some readers had raised questions because one of the labs withdrew its certification for MSSE. He said he ran MSSE and compared it on some known malware with several other anti-virus programs, and MSSE has kept his machines clean. So, he still feels comfortable using it and does so on all his machines. - Original Message - From: Marilyn Walker mlw1...@sbcglobal.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, January 04, 2013 9:50 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] off: antivirus Eric, how did you know that it was mse that allowed the viruses to slip through or whatever? Re: [JAWS-Users] lost my authorization key
Dave, Unfortunately, that isn't unusual. I have had that happen more times than I care to count. Usually, a re-boot solves the problem, but on my wife's Windows 7 Pc, which inexplicably lost its authorization, we tried re-booting and repairing, and ultimately had to re-snag a key from Freedom Scientific. Of course, this begs the question: If FS were to go under, we'll all be eventually out of luck. Prefetch When you launch an application, Windows XP stores that information in a file called, prefetch. These files can accumulate over a period of time and will have some affect on the loading of Windows. It doesn't hurt to clean out this file from time to time and will not affect the operation of your PC to delete them. Go to the start menu and either arrow down to run or just type the letter R. When the edit box appears, type in: prefetch and press enter. You will have a list of applications that you have used since you have been using Windows XP. Simply do a control a to select all and then press your shift delete. If you just press delete, those files will go into the recycle bin, but adding the shift key will bypass it. Now say yes to, are you sure you want to delete these files. Finally press alt f4 to exit. 2. Disc Clean-up Whenever you surf the internet or download files, your PC stores information on the hard drive in a temp folder. There are other files included in the Disc Clean-Up which you probably would want to get rid of. Go to your start menu, then to All Programs, then Accessories, next to System Tools and finally to Disc Clean-Up and press enter. It might take a few minutes for it to open, depending on if it will compress old files. But once it does, you will probably be asked which Drive your want to clean. Select the C drive. Once this is selected, you will have a list of items that the disc clean-up will clean. These may include: Downloaded Internet Files Temp Internet Internet Files Off Line Web Pages Office Set-Up Files Recycle Bin Temporary Files Web Publisher Files Compress Old Files Catalogue Files As you down arrow through the list, you will notice that they may be checked or unchecked. If they are checked, this will clean that option when the next Button is pressed. I recommend checking everything with the exception of, compress old files. You only need to check this if your hard drive is getting Low on free drive space. After you have checked the files you want to clean, tab to next and press enter. You will be asked if you are sure you want to do this, just Press enter on, yes. It will take a few minutes, but when it is finished, you will be taken out of the Disc Clean-Up. --- *** Note. Make sure to add, space, before the ,/f. as indicated. 3. Check Disc The check disc should be performed before a scan disc is performed. To do this, go to the start menu and then to, run. When the edit box appears, type in: chkdsk /f and press enter. You will be presented with a dialogue that says, the check disc cannot be performed because the volume is in use. Would you like to perform this the next time your system starts? Just type the letter Y and press enter. Now you will need to shut down any open applications and restart your PC. When it begins to boot up and before Windows starts, your PC will perform a check disc. It will take a few minutes to perform, but when

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to check how many Jaws keys
Hi Lennie, I posted a question to FS about how to determine the number of activation keys remaining. In case any of you wanted to find out, here are their instructions, verbatim: Thank you for contacting Freedom Scientific Support. We suggest going to FSACTIVATE.com http://www.fsactivate.com 2. Click on the continue product activation button. 3. Down arrow to: Verify the number of activation keys available for your Freedom Scientific product and press enter. 4. Down arrow to serial number and again down arrow to edit. Type in your JAWS serial number and press enter on the submit button. 5. Underneath the first seven digits of the authorization number, you will find the number of keys remaining. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. Hope this helps. [JAWS-Users] Passkeeper Tip
Hi All, I've been using Passkeeper for quite awhile now , I finally ran out of space. I don't know how Passkeeper determines its capacity, if it's by total data or number of entries. But, here is how you'll know when you've ran out of space. When you get into Passkeeper you usually land on the, Add, button. Well, if you've filled it to capacity it doesn't come up on the,Add, button, it opens on the, Remove, button. Also, when tabbing around you won't be able to find the, Add, button. You will only have the Remove, Edit, Quit buttons. Hope this helps. Take care. Mike This email was sent from my, iBarstool. Hi Marie, I would say around 3 years I ran out of space around 130 entries. Keep in mind each field, Account Name, User Name, Password, Notes will only allow a certain amount of characters. I can't tell you exactly what the capacities are but, you will find out soon enough when you put in too many! LOL LOL I have data in every 1 of the Notes fields so, if the program goes by capacity then, if a person didn't put the amount of data into each Notes field that I have entered, you would probably be able to get more entries / Account Names. Hi, is there a way to move icons on the desk top, with out using a mouse? I am using JAWS 13, windows seven and a laptop, I have some books that I want to move to the other side of my desk top, until I get them extracted into the right folders, and I keep getting lost with the other icons on the desk top, so wondering if there is a way to move them to a clear side on my desk top, then extract them, and then dump them into the recycle bin? thanks so much susie For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Consider this idea boys and girls. Pass keeper does not require an install so what is to stop you from using multiple versions of the program?
