[JAWS-Users] Announcing Headline unnecessarily in Outlook 2010

2014-04-08 Thread Liuda
I do apologize, but I believe that my computer ate the message that I saved
about the procedure of eliminating this annoying announcement and also my
name in brackets randomly in Outlook 2010 e-mail messages.

I truly hate to ask again, but can one person please post this message for
the final time, I promise.

This would be tremendously appreciated.

However, if you are using an earlier version of Word the steps will be
 quite
 different.

 1. Press Alt+F to enter the backstage view.
 2. Use down arrow key to the Open tab.
 3. Use Shift+Tab and if you find a Recover unsaved documents button use
spacebar. If that button isn't showing tab until you find the Recent tab
and use spacebar. Use Shift+Tab from that point and see if there is a
Recover unsaved documents button. If so then press spacebar.
 4. Use Shift+Tab until you are in a list of unsaved files.
 5. Use up or down arrow key to the file you want and press enter key.
 Each
file in the list should have a .ASP extension.
 6. If the unsaved file opens in the Reading Layout mode use CTRL+Alt+P to
 switch to print view.
 7. If you use F6 you should find a pane that tells you the file is a
recovered document and if you use right arrow key you should find a Save As
button. Use spacebar on that button to bring up the Save As dialog box.
 If
the pane doesn't show then use F12 in the document and save the file.

Again, the above is for Word 2013 so if you have an earlier version then
 please let us know.

 Take care.

Control+ shift +a opens thunderbird's attachment window. Then you'll
need to identify the file you want by tabbing several times (depending
on which version of windows you are using) until you find it. Then
click on the file name. The next step is a leap of faith. Shift tab
will bring up a selected/not selected dialog. Arrow down to selected and
then press control + enter to send the email with the attachment.
Anyone knowing an easier, faster way is welcome to comment.

[JAWS-Users] MSE Now Flagging My PC Status As At Risk

2014-04-08 Thread Gerald Levy

A few days ago, I posted that the Microsoft Security Essentials icon in the
System Tray of my XP PC was reporting its status as potentially unprotected.
This morning, after I booted up and checked the System Tray, the MSE icon is
now reporting my PC status as At Risk. Here is the message that is displayed
on the MSE Home tab:

PC status: At risk
Support for this operating system has ended, which means Microsoft Security
Essentials is no longer supported and your PC is at risk. To make
sure your PC stays
protected, click the link below to see our end-of-support guidance for
operating systems.

While it is true that support for XP itself has ended, the XP version of MSE
continues to function. I successfully updated the database definitions
manually and ran a quick scan to verify this. So if MSE is still working, then
my PC is not really At Risk, as the System Tray icon reports, and I can only
conclude that this is nothing less than shameless scare mongering on the part
of MS. Contrary to the message above, reliable sources claim that support for
MSE will continue through July, 2015. So what is really going on? Are any
other MSE users who are still running XP also getting the At Risk icon in
their System Tray?

on which version of windows you are using) until you find it. Then
click on the file name. The next step is a leap of faith. Shift tab
will bring up a selected/not selected dialog. Arrow down to selected
and then press control + enter to send the email with the attachment.
Anyone knowing an easier, faster way is welcome to comment.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to send an attachment in Thunderbird

2014-04-08 Thread Jim Pursley
I'm getting beyond my limited expertise here. Can you copy your desired
attachment from your external drive to your internal drive? then your
Windows filing system should be able to locate it for you. Going
farther in this question will be up to David or Rick, I think or someone
who uses both Thunderbird and external drives. It may be possible for
Maria or Angela, two knowledgeable Thunderbird users, to help also.

I hope you can find a way to get my external drive to open in an

Re: [JAWS-Users] MSE Now Flagging My PC Status As At Risk

2014-04-08 Thread Gerald Levy

The probelm with AVG and Avast is that there are questions about their
accessibility with JAWS, particularly the most recent versions. So as an
alternative to MSE, I am considering Qihoo 360 Internet Security, which is
free and JAWS accessible , according to a few list members who have tried
it. And it has received mostly favorable reviews for ease of use and malware
detection. Can I disable MSE real-time protection and keep it on my PC and
use it only as a scanner in conjunction with another real-time anti-virus
program like 360 Internet Security? This way, I can go back to using MSE by
re-enabling real-time protection in the event that the alternate anti-virus
program doesn't work out and has to be uninstalled. My understanding is
that the XP version of MSE can no longer be installed, so once I remove it,
I probably wouldn't be able to re-install it again, and for this reason, I
would prefer to keep it on my PC as a fallback. As long as MSE real-time
protection is disabled, it should not conflict with another real-time
anti-virus program. Does this make sense? Thanks for any advice.

Somebody on another list claims that the most recent version of Avast is not
very accessible with JAWS. The problem with installing Avast is that if it
doesn't work out, it might be necessary to boot into safe mode to remove it,
and of course, this cannot be done with JAWS because it does not provide
speech. So I would prefer to avoid Avast for these reasons.

[JAWS-Users] Appending selected files to Clip Board

2014-04-08 Thread Flor Lynch
there is a different method used in selecting non-contiguous files,
illustrated by the difference I made with the subject line hereto, and
therefore you do not use the JAWS+Windows+c for it. Rather, you first
unselect with a press of ctrl+space, then use ct rl+Up/DownArrow to
navigate up/down, all the while holding down the ctrl key, and then
press SPACEBAR on the files you want to select. You COPY your SLECTED
FILES to the CLIPBOARD for PASTING ... in the NORMAL way.

that is already on the clipboard, for later pasting. If you merely
copy to the clipboard, then you are replacing the content already on
the clipboard. Thus, copying to the clipboard is a once-off move.
Appending, on the other hand, can be done intermittently. And in
answer to another question asked, yes you can 'summarize' a page by
this means - by appending discrete passages to the clipboard, and

pasting the clipboard content(s) into another place or document.

I hope that that was quite clear.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MSE Now Flagging My PC Status As At Risk

2014-04-08 Thread Steve

Yes, Gerald,

I am getting the exact same thing.

You can choose to regard it as scare mongering. While the virus definitions
should keep you fairly protected from spyware, the exploits in the XP system
won't protect you from other security exploits; too many known holes in the
system that hackers are waiting to address. Use at your own peril. I will
probably continue to use my XP machine for some things, almost completely
off-line though.

I guess I regard it as better get off my butt and start transferring all my
stuff to the nice Windows 7 machine I have had waiting around for the last
year. I guess I'm an Xp hold-out although I am real comfortable running Win
7.

I just upgraded a Vista laptop to Win 8, so can't say as much for that
operating system and don't plan on upgrading the other Win 7 machine that I
dedicate to other activities.

The only difficulty I have is trying to network this stuff through my uVerse
router/gateway.

The probelm with AVG and Avast is that there are questions about
their accessibility with JAWS, particularly the most recent
versions. So as an alternative to MSE, I am considering Qihoo 360
Internet Security, which is free and JAWS accessible , according to
a few list members who have tried it. And it has received mostly
favorable reviews for ease of use and malware detection. Can I
disable MSE real-time protection and keep it on my PC and use it
only as a scanner in conjunction with another real-time anti-virus
program like 360 Internet Security? This way, I can go back to
using MSE by re-enabling real-time protection in the event that the
alternate anti-virus program doesn't work out and has to be
uninstalled. My understanding is that the XP version of MSE can no
longer be installed, so once I remove it, I probably wouldn't be
able to re-install it again, and for this reason, I would prefer to
keep it on my PC as a fallback. As long as MSE real-time protection
is disabled, it should not conflict with another real-time
anti-virus program. Does this make sense? Thanks for any advice.

They help visually impaired people get computers with a minimum

say alt control or control tab when I pressed the tab key it was almost
like the control key was stuck.
so I tried turning jaws off and then turned it back on again and still
the problem continued so I shut down the computer and then turned it
back on again and everything worked right again.
does anyone have any other suggestions what I can try the next time this
happens?

I am using windows 8.0 and jaws 15

Hi

I don't know if this would work for Braille displays. But on my Windows 7
machine now running JAWS 15, with no serial ports, I am using a Dectalk
Express sybthesizer which plugs into a serial port. I bought a serial to
USB converter and plugged the serial adaptor of the synthesizer into one end
and the other end into a USB port on the machine. I bought the adaptor on
Amazon. The one I got is made by TrendNet. But if JAWS has actually
blocked serial Braille displays, the block would most likely be somewhere
outside of the driver itself. You could ask FS if what you want to do is
possible and why they blocked them after JAWS 11.

Hey folks, I'm looking into grabbing an old TSI navigator
because its the cheapest way for me to get my hands on an 80 character
braille display. I've been doing some research and discovered that the
navigator uses the Power Braille communications protocol and should,
therefore work with jaws's powerbraille driver. I then discovered that FS
has disabled use of the powerbraille displays through a serial port as of
jaws version 11. The navigator doesn't have a parallel port and neither do
any of my computers. Anyone know if its possible to hack out the PB driver
from jaws 11 and put it to work with jaws 14?

My biggest problem with buying a new computer or even obtaining one from the
Texas organization is that I have nobody I can count on right now to help me
set it up. Indeed, my current Dell XP workstation is so heavy and bulky

it is now sitting. And I am reluctant to enlist the services of Geek Squad,
which I have heard nothing but horror stories about from blind computer
users on other lists, or any other tech service of dubious reliability.
Actually, I'm not so sure that it would be easy to obtain a refurbed Windows

experiencing overwhelming demand from other blind XP users who are looking
for an inexpensive way to upgrade to Windows 7.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to recover MS word document with the help of jaws?

2014-04-08 Thread Brian Lee
Hello,

I notice in the steps I sent yesterday that in step 5 I said that the extension
for auto saved documents is .ASP. The extension is ASD for auto saved
documents.

Below are the steps that should work in Word 2013 and Word 2010, followed by
steps that should work for Word 2007, followed by steps that should work for
Word 2003.

Word 2013 and Word 2010:

1. Press Alt+F to enter the backstage view.

2. Use down arrow key to the Open tab.

3. Use Shift+Tab and if you find a Recover unsaved documents button use
spacebar. If that button isn't showing tab until you find the Recent tab and
use spacebar. Use Shift+Tab from that point and see if there is a Recover
unsaved documents button. If so then press spacebar.

4. Use Shift+Tab until you are in a list of unsaved files.

5. Use up or down arrow key to the file you want and press enter key.
Each file in the list should have a .ASD extension.

In Word 2007:

1. Activate the office button by using Alt+F.

2. use up or down arrow key to find Word Options and press enter key.

3. Find the Save category in the list.

4. Tab until you find the AutoRecover file location box.

5. Select the path in the auto recover file location box and copy it to
the clipboard.

6. Use escape key until back in the document.

7. Close Word.

8. Use Windows key R to bring up the Run dialog box.

9. Paste the path on the clipboard into the edit box and press enter key.

10. Check for any files with a .ASD extension and press enter key to open the
one you want.

11. Use Save As to save the document in a Word format. .

Steps for Word 2003:

1. Press Alt+T to go into the tools menu and then use up or down arrow
keys to find the Options menu choice. Press enter on that choice.

2. use CTRL+Tab to find the Files Location tab.

3. Find the auto recover files choice and press enter.

4. Select the path and copy it to the clipboard. Be sure to copy the
entire path because it might extend on to more than one line.

5. Press escape key until back in the document and close Word.

6. Press Windows key R to bring up the Run dialog box.

7. Paste the path into the edit box and press enter key.

8. Use up or down arrow keys and check for files with the ASD extension.
Press enter key on the one you want to open so you can save it.

9. Save the file with a Word extension such as.DOC using the Save As
dialog box.

Take care.

I believe that the Computer for the blind folks preinstall NVDA and a Jaws

I can appreciate your difficulty, but replacing xp is going to be more and
more an inevitability sooner than later.
You could also maybe look on Craigslist or Yelp or other sites like that for
low cost tech support. Maybe even reach out to some sort of state
agency/community resource center or even a tech school and explain your
situation and see if a student could help you out with the actual physical
set up or just as a pair of eyes in case you run into problems while doing
whatever it is you need to do if you really don’t' know of anyone who may
know someone who can lend you a hand for an hour or two.

My biggest problem with buying a new computer or even obtaining one from the
Texas organization is that I have nobody I can count on right now to help me
set it up. Indeed, my current Dell XP workstation is so heavy and bulky
that it would require two strong bodies just to lift it off the desk where
it is now sitting. And I am reluctant to enlist the services of Geek Squad,
which I have heard nothing but horror stories about from blind computer
users on other lists, or any other tech service of dubious reliability.
Actually, I'm not so sure that it would be easy to obtain a refurbed Windows
7 computer from Computers for the Blind now anyway because they may be
experiencing overwhelming demand from other blind XP users who are looking
for an inexpensive way to upgrade to Windows 7.

Gerald, have you thought about reaching out to Computers for the Blind in
Texas to see about possibly upgrading to a Windows 7 machine? I know
everyone's financial circumstances are different and it isn't the easiest
thing for some folks to just go out and get a new system.
They help visually impaired people get computers with a minimum
configuration of Windows 7 for a donation of $100.00 for a desktop or
$150.00 for a laptop. I recently helped a friend who didn't have a lot of
money obtain a pc from them.
Instead of patching holes left and right and trying to come up with
 creative
solutions, perhaps this could be an option?
I guess too it would depend on what version of Jaws you're on, but even
 then, NVDA is free.

Somebody on another list claims that the most recent version of Avast is
 not
very accessible with JAWS. The problem with installing Avast is that if
 it
doesn't work out, it might be necessary to boot into safe mode to remove
 it,
and of course, this cannot be done with JAWS because it does not provide

The probelm with AVG and Avast is that there are questions about their

Hi,

I understand (having asked someone who's technically fairly
knowledgeable, a similar question) that it's very iffy. It might, or
might not, work in the case of older braille displays. Another thing is
that, they were at most 16-bit, which would work on 32-bit OS's but
certainly not on 64-bit (according to my understanding).

Hi

I don't know if this would work for Braille displays. But on my
Windows 7
machine now running JAWS 15, with no serial ports, I am using a
Dectalk
Express sybthesizer which plugs into a serial port. I bought a serial
to
USB converter and plugged the serial adaptor of the synthesizer into
one end
and the other end into a USB port on the machine. I bought the
adaptor on

Amazon. The one I got is made by TrendNet. But if JAWS has actually
blocked serial Braille displays, the block would most likely be
somewhere
outside of the driver itself. You could ask FS if what you want to do
is

possible and why they blocked them after JAWS 11.

I then discovered that
FS
has disabled use of the powerbraille displays through a serial port as
of
jaws version 11. The navigator doesn't have a parallel port and
neither do
any of my computers. Anyone know if its possible to hack out the PB
driver

from jaws 11 and put it to work with jaws 14?

just another note when you send your photos using this link, Face Book will
right the photos for you, so you have to do nothing but send them.
I would suggest, that you either give them a name or rename the photo, so
when it's posted you will know what it is. Otherwise, you just get a series
of numbers, and you have the date, but unless your mmemory is sharper than
mine to know what the pic is based on the date, then do nothing.

This isn't a JAWS problem. It's caused by holding down a key for too
long or by pressing one too many times in quick succession. I think you
can change this behaviour in Settings, Keyboard, Layout tab. One way is
to Change the key(s) to something else or None. .

Re: [JAWS-Users] MSE Now Flagging My PC Status As At Risk

2014-04-08 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Link at end of copied from CNet.
I will migrate off XP but not yet. I'll be more careful.

Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP, an OS still used by approximately
20-25% of Windows customers. That means one in four PC users must upgrade to
a more secure, supported version of Windows or risk their un-updated,
un-patched version of Windows XP catching a virus or other Internet bug. As
a rule of thumb, we always recommend upgrading your OS and then updating it
as often as possible to protect your system. If you're switching to a new
OS, read how to migrate easily from Windows XP. However, if you're a
die-hard who wants to keep a Windows XP machine, here are five tips for
keeping it running as safely and smoothly as possible until you upgrade.

1. Use updated browsers -- no more Internet Explorer

The latest version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP is IE 8, an
incredibly outdated browser. For security, it's better to use third-party
browsers like Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. All have promised to continue
Windows XP support for at least another year.

While you're installing a better browser, turn up your browser security.
Add-ons and extensions that disable JavaScript can prevent websites from
running malicious scripts. NoScript and Ghostery for Firefox or NotScripts
and ScriptSafe for Chrome can close the doors on many exploits.

2. Get rid of Flash, Java, and Adobe Reader

Although Flash, Java, and Adobe Reader were the mainstays of yesteryear's
Internet, with an unsupported OS they are gaping doors for hackers. Most
video sites like YouTube and Netflix uses HTML5, so there should be no need
for Flash. Java is still required for certain applications, but unless you
use those on a daily basis, there's no need for it to be installed. Lastly,
there are safer alternatives for Adobe Reader, such as Sumatra PDF, Nitro
PDF, and Foxit Reader.

3. Buy a full antivirus suite

Getting the protection of a full antivirus suite isn't a bad idea,
especially when it costs much less than upgrading to a new system.
Kaspersky, Trend Micro, F-Secure, and Norton are all good calls. You want
something heavy duty with its own firewall for the best protection. Then get
a second opinion from other scanners just to be on the safe side. The new
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is good utility to run as a second line of
defense. (The premium version is going for $20 this week)

4. Go offline or limit your account access

The surest way to stay safe is to stay off the Internet. If your Windows XP
machine's uses don't require an Internet connection (such as home theater,
playing music, or games), then disconnect. Otherwise use the limited account
privilege setting in the User Control Panel. Stay off the admin account
unless you need to update, patch, or install something. Account limitation
can be a roadblock for attackers.

5. Remove unnecessary clutter

Any programs you're not using can be a risk now that you're on an outdated
OS. Keep baggage to the bare minimum by uninstalling apps you don't need.
IObit, Revo, and Advanced Uninstaller can help. Then update whatever
applications remain. Just because Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP
doesn't mean that software developers are dropping it, too. A majority of
publishers still offer updates to their software at least for another year.

End of an era

Even though Windows XP gets no more Microsoft love, your functioning PC did
not suddenly became useless. If you practice good security and know the
limitation of the legacy OS, you can stretch out your system's life for a
little while longer. However, we do recommend that you not keep sensitive
data or perform essential tasks on your XP machine. While unsupported
doesn't mean automatic hacking, there will be fewer people reporting
exploits.
