Subject: [JAWS-Users] E-mail in Outlook 2010 is being read abnormally

When I am going through the List View of my In Box, using Outlook 2010,
Win.7 and JAWS 12, after I enter on a message to read, it usually says
Document something or other. It will announce randomly Document 1 through
Document 12 so far. After that I hear if I have any problems reading, then
I should use the web browser. What I would like to get rid of is the
Document announcement because after this is read, then I must manually go
through the fields again to get to the message, in order to start it to
read. All of these extra steps wastes so much time each day, considering
the volume of e-mail messages I read.

What can I do to eliminate all of this and just start the message reading
at the top normally, without additional confusion?

Thank you for any help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] the program has stopped working

2014-05-06 Thread Mike Boyd
Then, if you do not have an external drive, you can go to Recovery in
Control Panel and restore your PC to an earlier point in time when you know
that it was working correctly. Other than this, a repair drive can be
created on a USB drive, and the repair ran from that by choosing to boot
from USB instead of CD during boot up.

Hi Kevin,

I take it that since you have Windows Media Player 12, that you are running
windows 8. Is this correct? I believe that you need to run a repair on your
operating system. It sounds as if you have either or both some missing and
corrupt DLL files in your system. The easiest way would be to have a repair
disc, which computer manufacturers do not supply with their computers
anymore, but you can buy one for your OS Either through the manufacturer,
Microsoft, or some place like Ebay. You will need to insert the cd into the
disc drive on your computer, determine which key to press to boot to the
disc drive, and select repair Windows from the options shown. You can also
perform this operation with an installation disc.

Re: [JAWS-Users] wildcards in dictionary manager

2014-05-06 Thread Emanuel Boboiu

This is not enough, we want a letter to be spoken like another one, the
string mus be sent to the voice like it was written with the replaced one.
For instance, in Romanian we have a diacritic which is read like sh from
crash.

I would like to replace that diacritic with "sh" or only with a simple "s".
It is possible to make replacements, but at the point where a replacement
occurrs in JAWS, the voice reads like when a new word started there.

The changes in SBL file are good for special characters only.
I don't know why Freedom Scientific doesn't add this feature, to change
parts of string, or only letters. In NVDA it is possible to use even regular
expressions in Dictionary.

Unfortunatelly I don't like NVDA and I would like to use JAWS in future too.
Fortunatelly, Eloquence is ready for Android, it will be another possibility
to read books with Eloquence.

Does the following Help topic, taken from the JAWS Dictionary help,
Introduction, assist in the process?

Adding Speech for Special Symbols
While JAWS correctly represents the most frequently used symbols with
speech, you may need to add new ones. If you are reading a document and
find that JAWS misrepresents or does not announce a symbol, do the
following:

1.. Open Settings Center (INSERT+F2) and expand the Images and Symbols
group.
2.. Select the Speak Character Value in Hex check box.
3.. Choose OK to save changes and close Settings Center.
4.. Return to your document. Move the cursor to a lowercase letter "a"
(type one if none are present) and press NUM PAD 5 three times quickly.
JAWS should say, "Character U+61HEX". If you hear anything else, do not
proceed with these steps.
5.. Move the cursor to the character whose speech representation you
want to change and press NUM PAD 5 three times quickly to obtain the
hexadecimal unicode value of the character. Be sure to make a note of
this value, as you will need it in the next steps.
6.. Using a text editor like Notepad, open the .sbl file for the
active synthesizer. This file is located in your user settings folder
(C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\X (where X is the JAWS version number)\Settings\Enu). If
your user settings folder does not contain Eloq.sbl, then look for it in
the shared settings folder.
Note: Character definitions are specific to your synthesizer and
selected language. For example, if you are using Eloquence and American
English, you should open the file named Eloq.sbl and modify the section
named [American English].

8.. At the bottom of the appropriate section for your language, add a
new entry for the specific symbol you want JAWS to speak. The entry
should be in the following format:

 U+=SpokenRepresentation

(Where is the unicode hexadecimal value of the symbol, and
"SpokenRepresentation" is the desired pronunciation).
9.. Save your changes to the .sbl file, and then quit and restart
JAWS. Your speech changes should now take effect.

I think there are no possibilities to use wildcards in another way.
JAWS is the simplest screen reader speaking about dictionary.
Even Talks is better, at least we can replace a letter with another one,
this being a very good option for those who use diacritics unspeakable
by a
specific voice.
We wrote many messages to Freedom asking to improve the dictionary, we
don't
need it so advanced like that found in NVDA, but at least to replace a
string with another one.

Let's wait for version 16...

[JAWS-Users] Jaws misreads header information in Outlook 2010 and with Firefox open

2014-05-06 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

This has been something that I’ve noticed for the past couple of JFW
releases.

I’m running Outlook 2010 and when I have Firefox open instead f IE and do an
alt+tab to rotate to the list view of messages in Outlook from Firefox, Jaws
will sometimes misread the header information. Instead of speaking the
information such as sender’s name, message subject, etc., Jaws will just say
“table message” or even “from, to, subject, received” and so on. I have to
do another alt+tab and back again and this behavior will go away, but I find
it odd that this only happens while running Firefox. This has never occurred
with IE open.

Has anyone else had to deal with this peculiar JFW behavior and if so, is
there any way to fix it?

Thanks,

I believe the Jaws related Microsoft Outlook information below is correct,
but I'm 99% sure it no longer applies as of J14 or Jaws15. Newer versions of

Jaws made many changes as to how HTML mail is presented to the user.

For those having problems with Jaws reading your email presented in HTML,
you should consider changing how your email messages are presented to you.
If you change email to be shown as plain text you will be able to read your
mail just like it is shown in Outlook Express or WLM. Best of all, you will
still be able to press enter on links to have their respective webpages
open. Please let me know if you are serious about making this change, and
I'll elaborate. :)

Hi,
I have used the info below, which I saved from Freedom:
In Outlook 2007 and 2010, the way HTML e-mails are read has been changed by
Microsoft.
In outlook 2010 with JAWS 12 and 13, use the keystroke Insert+shift+w to
read messages in the internet Browser. Again this change was made by
Microsoft.
The keystroke: alt + H +X +V
reads in Outlook 2007. It causes the message to be read from the internet
browser.

Jorge

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opening folders in the treeview list

2014-05-06 Thread david
hello;
well;
this isn't exactly true;
Moving between the treeview list is easy as Apple pie.

But from the inbox, that's where you run into those close folders that you
have to press the right arrow to get further down the list.

I think, that is just the way it is and you have to live with it.
well, as I said?

it really depends on which level the folders are created.
if for example, the folders are created inside the inbox, yes, indeed it's
more difficult to access the folders, because, yes, you first need to open
the inbox, then we need to access the folder.
however, if the folders are created at the level 0,
then no, the folders are very easy to find and open.

Hello David,
Thank you very much for your reply,
But everything you explain I know well.

I knew this was going to be a hard question to explain...
Once the command is pressed to move the email, you end up in level one of
the treeview folder list.
But, let say, the inbox is closed, you press the right arrow to open, then
you can continue moving down through the folders or to when the next folder
is close.
Then, again you press the right arrow to open to continue on.
When, you locate the folder you want, now you press enter to place the email
into that folder.

David, there is folders in between folders that , if you don't press the
right arrow to open the path to the next folder, you'll are not going to get
there easily.
Even, if you quick nav, if the folder is in between a closed folder, you are
not going to hit bullseye either.

I been using Outlook, since 2008 and that has been the one thing I always
hated about Outlook; the moving through the treeview with closed folder
headings.

I was looking for a key command that would open all the folders paths in the
treeview all at once to avoid thissituation?

Thanks,
Jorge

To those reading this information below, remember that there is a difference
between installing an application and it's accessibility. The person below
successfully installed Office 2013, but I don't think Jaws is fully up to
the challenge of Office 2013 features. The items on the ribbon might be
successfully read by Jaws, but when it comes to some of the newer features
I'm sure it will get a bit frustrating when one can't seem to execute the
instructions when wanting to use some of the more obscure features of Office
2013. I guess I'm simply suggesting one consider the pros and cons of such
decisions as they may not be easily undone as might be the case if someone
installs Office 2013 over their previously good working version of Office.

In this laptop I migrated from Office 2007 to Office 2013 with the same set

I called Microsoft Accessibility and they help me install Office 2013.
They also saved my PST file and merge all my contacts, email folders and

They configured my computer and looked it over and ran their antivirus as

When, we logged off I got a perfect running PC and my new Office.

you just need to either arrow to the folder, or simply letter navigate and
then press enter.
your not saying that all of the folders are saying closed, are you?

Thanks,
Jorge

if your wanting to move a message from folder to folder, you can;

1, navigate to the message you wish to move,

2, now press the keystroke,

ctrl+shift+v=move,

3, now you will land into a list of the outlook folders, including any
folders you have created, just letter navigate, example, "j" for jaws, "i"

enter.
no need to have all folders opened.

Hi,

When, you want to move a message to the treeview folder list,

They seem to be all closed and you have to press the right arrow to open, to
be able to move on down the folder list.

My question is:

Is there a key command in Outlook to open up all the folders at one time to
save steps of opening them?

Thanks,

Jorge

Re: [JAWS-Users] Query Around JAWS Working With New WINDOWS 8.1 Release1

2014-05-06 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi Charles,

I recently helped update some Windows 8.1 computers from friends on these
lists. The update installs just like any other Windows Update. You will have
to be fully updated before you are presented with the option of installing
the windows 8.1 update.

The latest update will not do anything to remove the Start screen for the
older Windows7 start menu. Regarding booting to the desktop, this was
possible in Windows 8.1 though one had to configure this feature manually
while I believe the new update will do it automatically.

Again, it is perfectly safe to install the update, and Jaws will speak all
the way through. I believe the update is some 300 megs in size, and when it
installs you will be asked to reboot. After restarting your computer please
give it about 5 minutes for it to install the update. In other words, if you
don't immediately hear Jaws talking, please give the update time to install
itself and jaws will eventually begin speaking. You will also want to
complete this download as soon as possible as I believe Microsoft is
requesting Windows 8.1 users complete the update before the end of May 2013.

Release1

Hi,

I have been reading that Microsoft have already released- or are about to
release- WINDOWS 8.1 Release 1, reputedly, permitting desktop users to
boot directly to the Desktop, as well as restoring a version of the Start
Menu- instead of the Start Screen tiles.

I'm just wondering if this has been released yet, has anyone here
installed it and how is it working with JAWS? I appreciate that JAWS has
functionality to work with WINDOWS 8, however, I do not have a touch
screen and use my laptop in pretty much the same way as a desktop user,
with predominantly desktop style applications.

If anyone has tried the new WINDOWS release and it works with JAWS, how
did you install it and did you have to configure anything to get it to
work properly?

Many Thanks, With Kind Regards,

Charles Nicol

Re: [JAWS-Users] E-mail in Outlook 2010 is being read abnormally

2014-05-06 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi,

Unless you're running some sort of customized hybrid, Microsoft did not sell
an Office Outlook 2006. Read this for details.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Outlook

You can determine the version of Outlook on your computer by determining the
version of Office on your computer.
1. Please press the Windows key to open the Start menu search box then type
the following:
Office
2. After having typed the word "office" do not press enter simply press the
down arrow to review the results.
3. Please convey if you come across items such as Microsoft Office Excel
2007, Microsoft Office Word 2007, Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, etc.
4. You can press Escape key to close the Start menu search box.

To answer some of your other questions, to upgrade from Office 2007 to
Office 2010 you will have to pay as well as upgrading to Office 2013. I will
also add that at this point Freedom Scientific suggests Jaws users consider
sticking to Office 2010--you can always call and ask for their suggestions
as they might be working on Jaws features which will help bridge the gap
between what is not currently accessible.

As for the upgrade to Office 2010 being "necessary," I am happily using
Office 2007 as it is very screenreader friendly as well as very keyboard
friendly; I've not found the justification to upgrade to Office 2010 or
Office 2013.

Hi, I finally found the information on the version of Outlook I'm using, and
it looks like it's Outlook 2006.  If I update to the latest version;
1. Will it cost me anything? (I don't think so, but I'd like to be sure)
2. Will I have to reconfigure everything, like set up new folders, rules,
and stuff?
3. Will I be able to retain all the emails I've saved in folders on my

4. Does 2010 have changes that will make it worth the trouble?

I can live happily with what I have, but one is always curious. I'm using

Hi,
I have used the info below, which I saved from Freedom:
In Outlook 2007 and 2010, the way HTML e-mails are read has been changed by
Microsoft.
In outlook 2010 with JAWS 12 and 13, use the keystroke Insert+shift+w to
read messages in the internet Browser. Again this change was made by
Microsoft.
The keystroke: alt + H +X +V
reads in Outlook 2007. It causes the message to be read from the internet
browser.

you don't need to right arrow to open unless the folder your seeking, is on
that level.

when you press the move command,
just press the letter, for example,
t=tech,
now just pres enter.
sorry if I don't understand.

if I use the move command, and I hear;
inbox closed,
simply press enter, no need to right arrow, again unless the sub folders are
on that level.

Thanks,
Jorge

[JAWS-Users] Query Around JAWS Working With New WINDOWS 8.1 Release 1

2014-05-06 Thread Charles Nicol

Hi, I finally found the information on the version of Outlook I'm using, and
it looks like it's Outlook 2006.  If I update to the latest version;
1. Will it cost me anything? (I don't think so, but I'd like to be sure)
2. Will I have to reconfigure everything, like set up new folders, rules,
and stuff?
3. Will I be able to retain all the emails I've saved in folders on my
current version?
4. Does 2010 have changes that will make it worth the trouble?

I can live happily with what I have, but one is always curious. I'm using
Windows 7 ultima and JAWS 14 (still).

Re: [JAWS-Users] wildcards in dictionary manager

2014-05-06 Thread Flor Lynch

[JAWS-Users] thinkpat laptops

2014-05-06 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi all,

Not only is Flor's suggestion a good one, when using a laptop, the laptop
keyboard interface is probably best when using alongside jaws. .

When using the laptop keyboard the Capslock key is substituted for the
JawsKey which is also known as the Insert key. The FN key should not be
relied on to substitute for Jaws commands as the FN key is often used for
many other features of the laptop and can make unexpected changes to the
computer when used in a manner other than the manufacturer intended.

To familiarize yourself with the use of the Capslock key on your laptop,
simply turn on Jaws help with Insert+1. You can now press any
Capslock+keyboard command to determine how it behaves on a laptop. Don't
forget the Jaws help topics has an entry for all laptop commands. :)

Joseph the free tech guy!

You can set or change this, in JAWS Options submenu -> Basic Settings

the group of radiobuttons that control the JAWS Keyboard layout.
Highlight the one you want by up- or down-arrowing to it. OK change(s).
