Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2016
My only problem with windows 10 was that, on my laptop, the driver on my main sound card was not comparable and, since I didn't really know how to fix that, I rolled back to windows 7. On my desktop machine, all is well with Windows 10. On 9/22/2015 10:45 PM, Mike wrote: I just upgraded my Office 365 subscription from 2013 to 2016. Everything seems to be working well. Re: [JAWS-Users] issue for portable jaws
Once you have the portable JAWS installed onto a USB flash drive, it can be used on any computer. One would have to read the instructions on the Freedom Scientific web site to be able to download, install and run the application. There are spedific steps involved. For JAWS 15 portable, it looks like the download files and the extracted files will need around 200 MEG. After you've downloaded both the 32 bit and the 64 bit files from FS, copy them to the thumb drive. Now press enter on one of the downloaded files. The first screen that appears asks where you want to extract the files to. The default is the high-level folder of the thumb drive. Assuming you chose the 32 bit version, tab once and you'll be on an edit box that specifies the high level folder of the thumb drive (Drive Letter colon backslash). Press the end key to move past the backslash and enter a folder name such as JAWS15-32. Then tab to the next button and press enter. Now all of the JAWS portable files for the version you chose will be placed in the folder you specified. Now repeat the steps above to extract the files for the other version and specify a folder name like JAWS15-64, assuming you are now installing the 64 bit version. Using Windows 7, I don't believe I've ever seen an auto run dialog popup automatically. So I create a startup file in the thumb drive high-level folder to start JAWS portable. In the high-level folder create a DOS batch file with a name like JAWS15.bat. The file extension must be .bat. Now position on the newly created file and press the applications key or shift+f10 to bring up the context menu. Arrow down one time to edit and press enter to open. Now copy the 6 lines that follow and paste them into the open batch file. Make sure the folder name in the batch file match what you named the folders. Then press control+s to save and alt+f4 to close. @echo off if "#%programFiles(x86)%#" neq "##" ( start JAWS15-64\jfw.exe goto :eof ) start JAWS15-32\jfw.exe This batch file will start the appropriate 32 or 64 bit version of JAWS portable. Now all you'll need to start JAWS portable is the drive letter where the thumb drive is installed. If the thumb drive opens when the thumb drive is inserted, move to the batch file and ;press enter, or press Windows key+r for the run dialog, type Drive letter colon backslash batch file name.bat. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Neil Towery Sent: Saturday, September 19, 2015 03:37 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] issue for portable jaws Hello George: I have read the instructions from the link you provided. Re: [JAWS-Users] when upgrading from win7 to win10
Very well written Jim. I've had windows 10 since it's inseption, now I will customize it lol. Actually, I did most of it from reading your previous posts, but one or two things at the bottom there I never touched on. Lol, I'm still trying to get Cortana to work. Do you have well written steps for that? I have added a few things. Customizing w-10 with Jaws. After reinstalling Jaws 16 or 17, I would check the following areas on the windows 10 computer. First of all, I would check my default programs. windows key+I, Open settings. You are in a horizontal list of 9 items, use your right and left arrow keys to move across the items. enter on system, arrow down to default apps and press enter. Tab across this window, look for the browser which by default is Microsoft edge. Press the spacebar on the edge, tab to IE, press the spacebar, this will set IE as your default browser. Do the same thing with the different defaults programs, for example email clients. Tab to email default, press the spacebar on it, tab to the email client you wish to use, and press spacebar, to set as default. Here is how you Turn off all of the background apps you will not be using, all are on by default. windows key+I, go to privacy and press enter. Go down to back ground apps and press enter. Tab across and uncheck most of these apps. Each time you uncheck one of them it will kick you back to the home button, just tab back to the next app in the list, make your choice to leave it on or turn it off. The next thing you want to do is go to the Windows update and change the following. Press Windows key+I, go to update and security and press enter. Tab to advanced options and press enter. Tab four times too, choose how your updates are delivered and press enter. Make sure when you tab that this sharing feature called, Let other computers send me updates is turned off, and let my computer send updates to other computers is also turned off. this will effect your computers speed and performance, especially in IE. Microsoft leaves all these back ground things on by default. Next area you want to check is your live tiles region. Press enter on the start button, down arrow to your apps, right and left, up and down arrow around in them. Press the application key on the highlighted app, you will have different choices. For example: Turn off live tile, if you are not using them I would turn them off. After turning the live tiles off, Press the application key again, Go down to Unpin from start, press enter, this will remove them from the start list region. You can also resize them, press the application key, go to the resize sub menu and choose, small, medium, and large which is wide. Next, if you want to uninstall an unwanted app on your computer. Press enter on the start button. Up arrow to , All Apps, press enter. Down arrow through the list of apps, if you find one you wish to uninstall. Press the applications key, down arrow to uninstall and press enter, press the spacebar to confirm. Many of these apps are built into the w-10 system, you will not be able to uninstall them. Next, You want to turn this setting off, unless you want your computer sending a lot of information to Microsoft. Press Windows key+I, open settings. Go to Privacy, press enter. go down to Speech, inking, and typing, press enter. Make sure that it says, getting to know me, and not stop getting to know me. If it says, stop getting to know me, just press the spacebar to change it back to getting to know me. all these things combined will slow down your computer. I hope this helps... -Original Message- From: hwolcott Sent: Monday, September 21, 2015 2:57 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] when upgrading from win7 to win10 hi jim: well, I got her done. Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Jaws on the Vanguard.com site
Hi Jim, I am having the same experience as you on the Vanguard site. Their site used to be very accessible, but since their last major site upgrade, accessibility has gone down the tubes. I have contacted their web support team, who tried to convince me that the accessibility, or lack thereof, is my problem and not theirs. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't me. I don't think that I should have to contact a customer advisor every time I want to perform a transaction. I don't have to do that with my bank and I did not have to do that with Scottrade, when I was managing my daughters brokerage account. AS the largest mutual fund company in the world, I think that they have an obligation to provide an accessible portal for their customers who rely on assistive technology. I will let you know if I get anywhere with them. [JAWS-Users] Problem With Page sequencing in Word 2010 documents
Hello, everyone. I have been noticing a strange problem lately with page sequencing in Word 2010 documents. Many times, but not always: When I open a document, the pages seem to be displayed next to each other in two-page groupings, as they would be if they were in a printed book. In other words, I will see pages 1 and 2, followed by 3 and 4, etc. Once again, this does not always happen, but is happening more and more often for me. I can temporarily solve the problem by switching the document view to draft mode, but this is a bit of a pain to have to do every time I experience this issue. How can I permanently configure Word 2010 to display document pages in the usual vertical sequential manner again? Am using Jaws 16 with Windows 7 here. Thank you! Re: [JAWS-Users] upgrading windows 10 questions
Hi Scorpio, We are not talking about weather Jaws 16 or 17, will work on a w-8.1 computer, which was upgraded to w-10, of course it will. I am simply stating,If you want Jaws 16 or 17, to run at a maximum efficiency,You should follow Microsoft advice, to reinstall Jaws or whatever, screen reader you use. I am aware of what Freedom Scientific says about not having to reinstall Jaws on a w-10 computer upgraded from 8.1, I happen to disagree with them on this issue. The main area's that it helps with a fresh install of Jaws 16 or 17, in w-10, are. The Start button edit region. The live tile region. The All apps region. Using different apps. Some places in Settings. A general, increase and response, of the snappyness of jaws in all area's of w-10. So, no pissing contest, just a general disagreement about reinstalling Jaws on a w-10 computer, for maximum efficiency., I say for a smoother running and more responsive computer, that you should reinstall Jaws after upgrading to w-10, like Microsoft recommends. You, say, leave it alone, because Freedom Scientific told you too. You say, you have upgraded 46, Windows 8.1 computers, Do you work at a computer store or what? If so, you have some sluggish computers running w-10 and Jaws! Seriously, How long does it take to reinstall Jaws? Re: [JAWS-Users] Small problem with the jaws 17 beta release in reading emails
Hello, I have this issue as well. I think it is a bug in video accessibility, the video drivers which replace windows vista and 7's mirror drivers, in windows 8 and 10. If this is the case, it us a Microsoft issue, not one concerning Freedomscientific. I also have issues when JAWS 17 does not consistently read the concurrent errors in the outlook 2013 spell checker dialog. I have to press tab, to regain focus, and then, works as expected. Hope this helps, Daniel p.s. Microsoft Office 2016 for windows is coming out, later today, both for Microsoft Office 365 subscribers, and non-subscribers respectably. Hope it's better than office 2013. the standalone version of Microsoft Office for mac 2016, is also being released as well as its windows counterpart. . Previously, it was only available to Office 365 subscribers. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Rose Combs Sent: Monday, September 21, 2015 4:45 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Small problem with the jaws 17 beta release in reading emails I am using outlook 2010 and not having this problem. It's not that big of an issue, but I'm sure they will fix this in the next beta release. Anyone else have this issue? Maheen. Re: [JAWS-Users] when upgrading from win7 to win10
hi jim: thanks. another keeper. will save this for future reference for when I update my laptop to win10. thanks again. howard wolcott -- From: "jim" Sent: Monday, September 21, 2015 5:05 PM To: Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] when upgrading from win7 to win10 Hi howard, Great job. here are some tips on customizing w-10, now that you have installed it.
