Hi Joanne, the following is a link to a guide to file explorer in Windows 8.1. It contains a section describing the ribbon in that program, and I don't think there are any changes in the ribbon in File explorer in Windows 10. http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/File-Explorer-8p1-Guide.html David. original message: I hope I won't get in trouble for possibly making this more of a thank you message, and yes those can clutter an in box. But I do want to say that, for example, in the case of ribbons, I appreciated David Bales' suggestions and they worked beautifully. I like that this group presents many approaches to the handling of apps and various work-arounds using Jaws. We're all learning, and for those of us who don't always understand new apps or layouts I appreciate help from those who can present an easier or, to me, familiar way of reaching my goals. I wouldn't mind learning more about ribbons and maybe there's a tutorial to explain them. But they don't make sense to me and I can't picture their layout or how to find their menus. Someone suggested turning the virtual ribbon feature off in Jaws and I know many others use it. I'd be glad to hear an explanation of what exactly they are and how to find the menus you need. I am using older email programs for this very reason--ribbons don't make sense. So if there's a tutorial that explains them thoroughly I would check one out if anyone knows of one. But in the meantime I'm so relieved there are still other ways to avoid them till I learn more. Interesting, I never noticed but obviously I will pay more attention in the future. I am using a Logitech wireless right now on this lap top but I'm not sure if this combination has crossed my mind as of late. The fact is no matter how careful you are once the amount of wires passes into the unbelievable range tangles are not avoidable at all. -Original Message- From: john_Justice Sent: Thursday, December 3, 2015 8:11 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] WARNING! some key combinations do not work withwireless keyboards I'm using a laptop and an older HP wireless keyboard. The Jaws Find command CONTROL+INSERT+F doesn't work at all on this particular wireless keyboard. My HP 4140 has a full keyboard with a keypad. I tried the same key combination on that board and it worked. There's no way to check for sure but that does concern me. You buy a board expecting it to work just like a hard wired version and it doesn't. Re: [JAWS-Users] If you're not ready for Win10, beware of Windows Update
The problem with Windows 10 is MS has packed it with a bunch of hidden services that violate your privacy. Everything you do on Windows 10 is being monitored in some way. MS is obviously looking for a easy way to market to it's users that's why they're offering Windows 10 as a free upgrade for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users. Also the reason why they're now force feeding the upgrade too. I'm sticking with Windows 7 as long as I can for I don't need another dad or mom looking over my shoulders monitoring every single thing I do on my PC. There is a very good free tool available that allows you to turn off many of these privacy issues called Spybot Anti-Beacon: "Spybot Anti-Beacon is a standalone tool which was designed to block and stop the various tracking (telemetry) issues present in Windows 10. It has since been modified to block similar tracking functionality in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems." Visit this page to read up on it: https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/ Yes, the program is completely accessible to JAWS. [JAWS-Users] jaws is saying running applications while alt-tabbing can this be stopped
I've never seen this before and it's happening on a windows 10 machine I'm experimenting with. Since Jaws 16 is more responsive than 17, I am using it mostly but I don't like alt-tabbing in Jaws 16. It says running applications and then the name of the window I'm alt-tabbing to, and then its position, like 3 of 4 or something like that. Can the running applications announcement be stopped? Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
Updates are divided (in Win7 at least) between important and recommended. I never download recommended because I chinstruct Windows to check for updates and let me decide whether to download and install. If the Win 10 install is an important upgrade, then you'd have to go into the details of each upgrade that is connected to the operating system, not to your other apps like Word, Defender, etc. There is a link to more information. The process can be enlightening if you care for that kind of detail. This said, the Win 10 income in the systems tray came as an important update..I did not scrutinize the important updates. And so I warily proceed. Re: [JAWS-Users] if your not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
To prevent Windows 10 from being installed surreptitiously on your PC without your knowledge, go to Change Settings in the Windows Update dialog, and in the combo box choose the option labeled "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." Also, uncheck the box labeled "get recommended updates the same way I receive important updates." [JAWS-Users] Finding wireless networks in w-10
Hi Jaws Users group, If you want to look for your wireless Network or search for another. Press windows key+I, settings. Right arrow to, Network and internet, press enter. If you have a wireless connection: The first choice wi-Fi, is already highlighted for you. Tab one time to the list of available networks. Your network will say, secure, connected, bla, bla, and bla. Use the up and down arrows to see the different Networks, they will say for example, ATT.secure. If you have an Ethernet connection: Windows key+I, settings. Right arrow to, Network and internet, press enter. Down arrow to, Ethernet, press enter. Tab one time to hear your Ethernet connection, should say, something like secure, connected your PC Ethernet connection. I hope this helps... Love God! with your heart, mind, and soul, that you might be blessed reaching His goal. Love your Neighbor as you would yourself, God will truly reward you with good health. Love God, your neighbor, as you love yourself, you will then be spiritually balanced with wealth. Love His Word that proceeds from His lips, then reflect on the heavens where God sits. Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
Anna, I'm no expert, but your question made me rethink my response I was going to offer. kb3035583 does not provide any security patch to a vulnerability, it is merely an update that reminds and facilitates users of 7 or 8.1 to reserve the free offer of upgrading to 10. so, I think not having kb3035583 won't necessarily prevent the computer from being upgraded to windows 10. as for the upgrade being done automatically, I'm not sure. but heed Gerald's post about changing the settings from automatic to manual, and uncheck to get recommended updates. after 7/29/16, all worries of automatically being upgraded to windows 10 should be over, and if you're still on 7 or 8.1, it should be safe to return windows updates to automatic. Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
Hi. You have to goto the Windows Update, Installed updates, and remove the kb2952664, kb3035583, and kb3112343. Don't restart the computer between each removal, but remove all 3 updates before restart. When the computer is Restarted, goto the Windows Update, and search for updates, but don't install the updates, but goto the Recommended updates link, and see, that the just removed updates again is ready for install. Uncheck the checkbox by each of these updates, and use the contextmenu button to get acces to the "Hide update". When these 3 updates are unchecked and hided, Win10 should no longer be able to install automatically. I Can't garanty, that Microsoft not later comes with a new update, that will try to get all Windows Users to upgrade to Win10, but let's see. Merry Christmas to all! Re: [JAWS-Users] Activating windows defender
Dear friend, the matter of fact is that under windows 10, windows defender is on by default. If you want to scan your drive, you can do it by the fololowing manner. Press windows+x go to control panel press enter there then press shift tab several times you will find windows defender link press space bar & that's it. Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
The pop-up window which appeared after the windows update fooled me into thinking that either Win10 had not really been correctly downloaded or that this download was for the updated Win10, so therefore I needed it. I went into the systray Win10 icon, but could not see the message that Win10 was downloaded- which I found when Win10 was automatically downloaded by Microsoft. The bad thing was that apparently no matter which option you choose, if you agree to download, Win10 will start installing immediately when the download completes. Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update Anna, In the past, I've suggested to uninstall KB3035583, and then hide it upon checking for updates, but I think what Gerald is implying is that if you leave the settings on windows updates to be performed automatically, you won't have any control as to what gets updated. [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
Thanks Donny I think I know which one it is but I am not quite sure. since I am using windows 8.1 I think it is 3,112,336 but I can not be quite sure because it has not put a message in my system tray like yours did. as of yet. but I have a feeling that it will not do anything because I got rid of the update that started this whole mess in the first place which was KB3,035,583 I will keep an eye on it anyway Thanks again Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] if you're not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update Anna- this one came down this week on either Dec. 1 or 2.
