Hi,
Yes you do get the sound. That is another reason why it is great to uncheck
that quick start. Have a great one.

Marv,

Thanks, I'll try both ways. With it disabled, my guess is
you get the boot up sound same as if you select restart?

For my two machines there is about one second difference on
the SSD boot drive on the machine running 16 GB Ram and an
SSD boot drive. There is about a ten second difference on
the 8 GB machine with a 5400 RPM boot drive. The only time
quick start comes into play for me is when I am having
issues with Jaws or office or windows itself. Sometimes I
need to reboot and the reboot does not work as it should
because of the fast start being enabled. There are times
when you will find that you need to restart and having this
option enabled will complicate whatever you are
troubleshooting.
Sometimes you just need a clean reboot.
I actually have more issues with starting up while having a
pair of large external drives connected slowing down my
restart or cold startup than having this option enabled or
disabled. Because I have the option to scan external drives
enabled in my antivirus application, it will sometimes slow
down my startup or restart. If I unplug everything from the
machine before starting or restarting I can be up and
running in seconds no matter if the option is checked or not
checked. But if I need to troubleshoot or install something
I personally want that option to not be checked. Just my own
personal preference.

There is a tremendous advantage for some people to having
quick start turned off. This is a matter of opinion. Not a
matter of fact. It depends on your personal preference and
how your machine performs. Personally, I prefer to have
quick start turned off and recommend it for all of my
students. It works better when Win 10 and jaws 17 needs to
be rebooted according to my opinion. That is why it is a
check box and an option.

Hi Robin,
Again, there is no advantage to turning quick start off.
This is a benefit of using w-10.
For all practical purposes your computer is shut down, when
choosing shut down.
I have done this from the beginning every day when I am done
using the computer, I use shut down.
In the morning I just press the power button, in about 10
seconds or less, my computer comes on with Jaws talking.
I then press the 4 digit pin, in a few seconds I am on the
desktop.
So, I don't understand all the fuss about turning it off.
I am a big security minded person.
So, anything beyond my anti-virus, that helps protect my
computer is welcome.
Good luck, just my opinion.

Hi,
Forgive me for jumping in on this thread but Kevin's
instructions say you have to turn off requiring a password
to disable this. I didn't think you needed to do that. can
someone clarify as I wouldn't want to disseminate erroneous
information but I truly didn't remember having to have done
that as I'm still logging into windows with a pin and my
machines are still set to require one but I did disable fast
startup myself.
thanks bunches for clarifying.

[JAWS-Users] A Facebook access question

2015-12-30 Thread Andy Shields
Hello,

If this has already been covered, I apologize, but I booked back through
several days' worth of postings and saw no reference to it.

One of my work duties requires me to "publish" updated information in the Notes
section of our Facebook page. Until a few weeks ago, this was easy to do, by
engaging the "Write A Note" button within the Notes section and pasting
prepared content into that edit box. Now that button and, for the most part,
the whole Notes area, seem to be inaccessible. I say "seem" because a friend
in Tech Support says that there's a new tab, labeled "More tabs" which appears
to give access to the necessary Notes and button. However, she also said that
even though she could see them on the screen, neither of us could reach the
necessary screen section with any combination of PC and JAWS cursors, including
routing either one to the other.

Obviously this isn't just a JAWS issue; Facebook seems to have done some basic
re-configuration. But my inability to post anything current in the usual way,
even with sighted help, is really causing a problem. Has anyone else on the
list run into this, and can you suggest a way to reach the "Write A Note"
button? Or, is there a newer way to get to that area for "publishing" them? I'm
out of ideas, and so are the people I've asked for help, so I'd really
appreciate any feedback I get. Thanks.

Hi Kurt. This is Helga! How are you? I don't think function key works with the
f10 for the application key. I use to have an HP laptop before, and for the
application key I did shift F10, not function key F10. Have you tried doing
shift F10? Just wondering. If not, I recommend you try that! Hope this helps. I

You can do all of these things in TW Blue as well, with or without a window.

You've a choice of keymaps, Qwitter (the old Qube) being one. Very accessible

Hi,
I use The Qube.
I like it better than TW Blue, because you drive it with key board commands and
there is no window to mess with on your computer. It runs totally in the back
ground, and you can use it no matter what other window you are in. It has
buffers for followers, friends, and you can create a buffer for each person's
timeline you are following or is following you. Holding down windows and ctrl
and pressing a letter or symbol controls the Qube. Take care and have a great
Christmas.

2015-12-30 Thread Steve
Curt,

HP has re-mapped the function keys.
Usually, just to the right of the lefthand control-key is a Func key. You need
to press that in conjunction woith one of the functionkeys f1-f12 to get it to
do the traditional function. Otherwise, you are in what HP calls ActionKey
mode.

Generally, you can return the HP to function like normal:

This "amazing" technology is called "Action Keys Mode", and the good news is
that it is very easily turned off to get your laptop back to working the
standard way of having to press the fn key.

Steps to fix:
- Shut Down your computer completely. Don't put in Sleep or Hibernate
- Press Power button to start
- Immediately press F10 key a few times
- This will start the BIOS
- Go to 3rd page (System Configuration). Press right arrow key to go to next
page
- Select the "Action Keys Mode". Press ENTER. Select DISABLE
- Save and Exit

Curt,

HP has re-mapped the function keys.
Usually, just to the right of the lefthand control-key is a Func key. You
need
to press that in conjunction woith one of the functionkeys f1-f12 to get it
to
do the traditional function.

Hi Al,
One reason is because if you are running a program in demo
version, the quick start will not set the timer back so you
can use for another 40 minutes. Another reason, is the quick
start is why people are not hearing a sound when they shut
their computer off or turn it back on. Also, the quick start
does not shut the computer totally down, so it is not the
same as a complete shut down. I do not like the quick start
for all of these reasons.
Have a great one, Al.

Hi.

It shouldn't have much trouble with that, it does after all have typical
tablet-like specs. Someone I know has one just a bit bigger than a USB
flash drive that goes directly into the HDMI port, which he hasn't since
he can't see the TV. The Cangaroo if I recall rightly is a pretty nice
outfit that only just recently released. It has a dock I believe, does
it deal fine with being removed from the dock while running and placed
back on it again? Since if memory serves it has an internal battery,
it'll keep on going while off the dock until you put it back again. I
read that the out of box experience setup process for this device had
been modified to work more like setting up a smart tv box would and thus
is not typical windows setup. Is this so and if so, were you able to do
it with Narrator even though?

I have a new HP laptop and I use either the right mouse button on the numb
pad or there is a double bar at the bottom of the keyboard under the
spacebar and the right side of that opens the context menu. I don't know if
you have the same extra bars on the keyboard you have. I still haven't
figured out how to make the FN key work with the row of F keys. I had 2
Asus machines and they were easier.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Getting the applications key working on new HP laptop

Hi all,

Just purchased a new HP laptop with no applications key. I tried the
function key and the f10 for the applications but still nothing happened, in
fact nothing is happening. I want to change the way the function key works
anyway because it is easier to use JAWS when the function key is for the
volume and tracks and the f keys are for what they normally should be. Can
anyone give pointers as to why I can't get anything to happen with the f
keys?

Thanks for any help.

Kurt

Re: [JAWS-Users] Kangaroo computer and JAWS 17

2015-12-30 Thread East, Robin
Hi, I had to to have sighted help as it took four hours for windows to update
completely. Once done it was easy as as soon as you plugged it into the HDMI
video you not only received video you had immediate sound. So to then run JAWS
exe was easily done as once the exe was started the setup took over.

Hopeing to give this little unit a good testing this week and weekend.

Shift f10 should get you into the context menu.

hello;
I've never had or used hp notebook,
however, you may want to check in the windows mobility center to se if
it's possible to change the function key behavior.

I no for example this is possible with the dell computers.

2015-12-30 Thread Pauline Dalton

Try holding down the function key as you use the f1 or 2 keys.
See if that helps.
It is not convenient, but at least you can use the function keys as you
normally would.

You may have to use the shift f10 as the applications key.
