Re: [JAWS-Users] Direct Download Links & What's New ForLatestRelease J17.0.1377
Hi, I always download the new JAWS executable file and save it on my computer and external drive. Installing the new .exe file always works better and has less problems later. Just updating it usually causes problems later for me. Have a great one. -Original Message- From: Mike B. JAWS list of 17 items • The INSERT+X command, which temporarily toggles Smart Navigation, now uses the default selection configured in the Startup Wizard. For instance, if the default setting is Off, performing this command toggles between Controls and Tables and Off. If the default setting is Controls, performing this command toggles between Off and Controls. • When typing in Contracted Braille using the keyboard on the Focus display, resolved an issue where text was not being entered into edit fields if the particular field was completely empty. • When JAWS is configured to display text in Unified English Braille (UEB), resolved an issue where the word "in" was being incorrectly contracted when followed by a punctuation mark or preceded by a quotation mark. • Resolved a customer reported issue with UEB translation where the "ever" contraction was being used incorrectly in some instances. • Resolved an issue where the dollar sign (dot 4 followed by dots 2-3-4) was not being entered as expected when typing in Unified English Braille Grade 2. • On the Braille Settings page in the Startup Wizard, the Placement of Status Cells and Dot Firmness options will now only be available when a braille display supporting these features is connected. • Added new braille tables for Dutch. • Resolved a customer reported issue where JAWS was unexpectedly speaking the system time after pressing ENTER from the Search Box in the Windows 7 Start menu. • Added links in the JAWS Help to the web page where users can download the Freedom Scientific Developer Network (FSDN). • A new option, Annotation Indication, has been added to the Reading Options group in Quick Settings for all applications. It determines whether or not JAWS detects annotations such as comments, footnotes, and endnotes in rich text documents. • Resolved an issue with the Technology News from CNet Research It lookup source where results containing an apostrophe were not being displayed correctly. • If JAWS is configured to start automatically at the logon screen or after you have logged into Windows, you can now press and hold both the ALT and CTRL keys as Windows boots to prevent JAWS from starting. This is useful if you need to troubleshoot any startup related issues you may be experiencing. • A new speech output type has been added which enables JAWS to automatically announce toast notifications. These are notifications apps can use to display time-sensitive or personally relevant notifications regardless of whether the user is in another app or on the Start screen, Lock screen, or Desktop. For example, a toast may be used to alert a user to an incoming VOIP call, instant message, or text message. The new Toasts output type is selected for all verbosity levels and can be configured u

I'm not sure if this happens to other outlook users and this is probably the wrong forum to voice this; however, when I have an outlook email open, whether if I'm reading one, or composing one, alt-tabbing and back to the body of the message, I always have to turn off quick keys with insert z. Just to make me feel better is anyone else experiencing this? For the record, I'm using jaws 17 and it even does this in jaws 16 and outlook 2013. [JAWS-Users] wrongly classed web controls
Hi there! I have never figured out a great way around sites with web controls that are wrongly classed. What I mean is that, for instance, a box to select language, country, or state, instead of being a combo box is said to be a read-only edit box. I've tried hitting space for forms mode, alt down arrow, but if I then arrow around, it pops out and basically does nothing. Of course, on a lot of them, English is way down the list, and in a huge list of countries, US is also. I must be missing something in all my years of using the web with screen readers, as this type of control is thankfully rare. I think I found it on an online store where the default is Visa, and I needed MasterCard once, but in a short list, one can get lucky once in awhile. Is there some command in JFW I don't know of to deal with this situation, so it would behave like a combo box? I've tried Firefox and Chrome, and both result in the same mess. Is there a way to reclass these read-only edit boxes into a combo b ox when they are on the web? For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] Direct Download Links & What's New For Latest Release J17.0.1377
Hi, I asked this in a previous email, but thought I'd ask it again here. The option to update just came on my computer, so I chose to do so. However, it said that it couldn't update the patch. And I hit OK. Once I did that, my computer has not let me navigate things. It talks, and will let me hit letters, but it's not navigating to anything on my computer. Any suggestions? Should I uninstall it completely and reinstall just the original Joss 17 cd I got in not do the updates? I tried to download the update, it look like it could work, but they gave me an error about the patch not downloading or something. Now my computer will talk, however, it won't let me navigate to things. It just says the letters I'm pressing that doesn't tell me anything. Any suggestions? Should I uninstall jaws and reinstall 17? And not update? Nope. With the pop-up blocker off, and with a blank page on IE, I hear nothing when I press the Rumola favorite. Then when I press the Rumola favorite again, it tells me that "Rumola light is already running on this page", with an OK button. I paid for a subscription, and as noted to this list, never received an email confirmation with an account or password. Is Rumola light a non-paid version? What's going on? Gerald, Not sure I understand. Are you saying that using Rumola with IE does not require a paid account? Dave Carlson Oregonian, woodworker, Engineer, Musician, and Pioneer - Original Message - From: "Gerald Levy " To: Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 2016 05:33 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] chrome Yes, indeed, Rumola works with IE as long as you save the bookmarklet version in the favorites bar. And once you have created an account and saved the bookmarklet version in the IE favorites bar, you can copy and paste it into the Firefox bookmarks tool bar so that you can use the same account to solve image captchas with either IE or Firefox. There is no need to create an account using the Rumola add-on for Firefox unless you use Firefox as your primary browser and are not interested in using it with IE. I have already used Rumola with IE 11 to successfully solve a couple of image captchas. Re: [JAWS-Users] chrome
Yes, indeed, Rumola works with IE as long as you save the bookmarklet version in the favorites bar. Once again thank you for sharing. I have no problem supporting any developer who has taken the time to make an app or plug-in that addresses a serious problem. As long as it works well with JAWS v16 and v17 I'm in! At 08:10 AM 1/27/2016, you wrote: Just changing the subject line, since I forgot on the original message. Before we get started with this discussion, anyone who wants to complain because this service has a cost attached to it, keep those comments off-list! Complaining about how much things cost blind people has nothing to do with the use of Jaws, and is certainly not constructive! Now, on with the info as I have it: From what I understand, there is one called Rumola, and it is supposed to work with IE , Firefox and Google. You can find out more at: http://skipinput.com/ I believe that there are extensions for Firefox and Chrome, but not for IE, although someone has discovered a way for it to work with IE. It is a pay-for service, 50 credits = $0.99 150 credits = $1.95 Credits are valid for one year from time of purchase. My experience with the website, and getting the service to work using Jaws was a good one. HTH, Richard Q. Thanks for this info. Looks like it is time for me to learn more about using Google Chrome with JAWS 17. Do you know of an app or something for Google Chrome that tackles this issue? Still have no idea why FS hasn't developed some feature in JAWS to do this. I have been experimenting with Google Chrome Browser, and I have found that it is very accessible and easy to use. More than that, I can open the same web site in half the time as with IE or Firefox. It never crashes, and it is more stable than any other browser. It is the best browser when it comes to streaming videos and other media by far. The video never pauses for example. In IE, the same video pauses a few times for a few seconds. Also, Google Chrome is the easiest browser to use. Yes, I am not kidding. Simply press enter on the browser, and the home page opens. I have mine set to Google of course. Now, just press alt and the screen reader will say chrome button. If you press down arrow, every setting and menu you will ever need is in that one vertical column. The history, delete history, book marks, are all in that one vertical menu just by pressing the alt key on the home page. All navigation JAWS short cut keys work in Google Chrome. I have not found anything yet that is not accessible. Also, every JAWS key command works in Chrome just like in IE. You can just press alt + D for the address bar for example. I will continue to play around with Google Chrome a little more, and I will be ready to do an Audio tutorial for you guys. You will not believe just how much better Google Chrome is over any other browser. You will hear it with your own ears when I send you the tutorial probably by Friday. I know some of you will use Chrome as your default browser. God bless and have a great night. Talk to all of you soon. On book marks and other options, you have to press the right arrow just like it is a sub menu to get access to your book marks, for example. Also, you do not have to sign on the settings page. There is no important reason why you have to. You can still change the settings and do what you want to do without ever signing in. Take care and have a great one. From: Tim Ford Hi Gerald, In Chrome, use the alt key to bring up the menus, cursor down to "bookmarks" and press enter. Arrow down and one of the items is "bookmarks from IE". If you do not find those bookmarks, repeat the steps above, and press enter on the import bookmarks line, then after that finishes, you should then see the bookmarks from IE in its own list. By the way, the Chrome menus allow first letter navigation, so after first hitting the alt key, pressing b pops you right to the bookmarks line. Tim Ford From: Tim Ford Here is the download page. The web page will automatically detect your operating system and give you the correct version to install. https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/ I cannot remember how to turn that into a link, so you will need to manually copy the above string into an "open web page" box. Hi, Chrome is great when you get used to it. I have a tutorial I did on Chrome if you want it. To set chrome to open on a certain home page, press alt and the Google menu will come up. Now, up arrow to settings and press enter. A web page will open up with many settings you can adjust. Arrow down to start up and make sure that the third radio button is checked to open with a certain page. Now, there will be an edit field right below that to enter the address you would like to have opened every time. I have Google in there, but you can put any URL. Have a great one and let me know if you would like the tutorial. -Original Message- From: Kimsan Sent: Tuesday, January 26, 2016 4:46 PM To: 'jaws-users' Subject: [JAWS-Users] chrome I just installed chrome version 48.
