Re: [JAWS-Users] Direct Download Links & What's New ForLatestRelease J17.0.1377

2016-01-27 Thread David Moore

Hi,
I always download the new JAWS executable file and save it on my computer
and external drive. Installing the new .exe file always works better and has
less problems later. Just updating it usually causes problems later for me.
Have a great one.

Hi Dacia,

Have you tried rebooting to see if that helps? If you reboot & your system
comes up running normally, try downloading J17 using the links I provided
earlier, & running that update installation file from your computer. Some
people have good luck updating with the Jaws updater, & others do not. Or,
even with your computer acting weird, if you can download the previously
mentioned installation executable & running it, that might clear up your
troubles.
Take care.

Hi, I asked this in a previous email, but thought I'd ask it again here. The
option to update just came on my computer, so I chose to do so. However, it
said that it couldn't update the patch. And I hit OK. Once I did that, my
computer has not let me navigate things. It talks, and will let me hit
letters, but it's not navigating to anything on my computer. Any
suggestions? Should I uninstall it completely and reinstall just the
original Joss 17 cd I got in not do the updates?

Enhancements in JAWS 17.0.1377 (January 2016)

The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 17 November
2015 release and the January 2016 update.

• The INSERT+X command, which temporarily toggles Smart Navigation, now
uses
the default selection configured in the Startup Wizard. For instance, if
the
default setting is Off, performing this command toggles between Controls

Tables and Off. If the default setting is Controls, performing this
command
toggles between Off and Controls.

particular field was completely empty.
• When JAWS is configured to display text in Unified English Braille
(UEB),
resolved an issue where the word "in" was being incorrectly contracted
when
followed by a punctuation mark or preceded by a quotation mark.
• Resolved a customer reported issue with UEB translation where the "ever"
contraction was being used incorrectly in some instances.
• Resolved an issue where the dollar sign (dot 4 followed by dots 2-3-4)
was
not being entered as expected when typing in Unified English Braille Grade

• On the Braille Settings page in the Startup Wizard, the Placement of
Status Cells and Dot Firmness options will now only be available when a
braille
display supporting these features is connected.
• Added new braille tables for Dutch.
• Resolved a customer reported issue where JAWS was unexpectedly speaking
the system time after pressing ENTER from the Search Box in the Windows 7
Start
menu.
• Added links in the JAWS Help to the web page where users can download
the
Freedom Scientific Developer Network (FSDN).
• A new option, Annotation Indication, has been added to the Reading
Options
group in Quick Settings for all applications. It determines whether or not
JAWS detects annotations such as comments, footnotes, and endnotes in rich
text documents.
• Resolved an issue with the Technology News from CNet Research It lookup
source where results containing an apostrophe were not being displayed
correctly.
• If JAWS is configured to start automatically at the logon screen or
after
you have logged into Windows, you can now press and hold both the ALT and
CTRL
keys as Windows boots to prevent JAWS from starting. This is useful if you
need to troubleshoot any startup related issues you may be experiencing.

Hi,
Chrome is great when you get used to it. I have a tutorial I did on Chrome
if you want it. To set chrome to open on a certain home page, press alt and
the Google menu will come up. Now, up arrow to settings and press enter. A
web page will open up with many settings you can adjust. Arrow down to start
up and make sure that the third radio button is checked to open with a
certain page. Now, there will be an edit field right below that to enter the
address you would like to have opened every time. I have Google in there,
but you can put any URL. Have a great one and let me know if you would like
the tutorial.

Just changing the subject line, since I forgot on the original message.

Before we get started with this discussion, anyone who wants to complain
because this service has a cost attached to it,
keep those comments off-list!
Complaining about how much things cost blind people has nothing to do with

Now, on with the info as I have it:
From what I understand, there is one called Rumola, and it is supposed to
work with IE , Firefox and Google.
You can find out more at:

I believe that there are extensions for Firefox and Chrome, but not for
IE,

although
someone has discovered a way for it to work with IE.
It is a pay-for service,
50 credits = $0.99
150 credits = $1.95
Credits are valid for one year from time of purchase.

Only thing is that I wish someone comes up with a 2016 solution to
those pesky security images. Yes the more well known sites do allow
you to hear an audio version, but even those sometimes are not clear
to the human ear LOL!

Webvisum for the versions of FireFox 4.1 and earlier still works, but
I'm stuck with using an older browser (Which is never good security
wise) so I can have a way of dealing with those capture images. Do
you know of an app or something for Google Chrome that tackles this issue?

Still have no idea why FS hasn't developed some feature in JAWS to do
this. Guess it's much more difficult then I thought.

[JAWS-Users] wrongly classed web controls

2016-01-27 Thread Brent Harding
Hi there! I have never figured out a great way around sites with web controls
that are wrongly classed. What I mean is that, for instance, a box to select
language, country, or state, instead of being a combo box is said to be a
read-only edit box. I've tried hitting space for forms mode, alt down arrow,
but if I then arrow around, it pops out and basically does nothing. Of course,
on a lot of them, English is way down the list, and in a huge list of
countries, US is also. I must be missing something in all my years of using the
web with screen readers, as this type of control is thankfully rare. I think I
found it on an online store where the default is Visa, and I needed MasterCard
once, but in a short list, one can get lucky once in awhile. Is there some
command in JFW I don't know of to deal with this situation, so it would behave
like a combo box? I've tried Firefox and Chrome, and both result in the same
mess. Is there a way to reclass these read-only edit boxes into a combo b
ox when they are on the web?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Direct Download Links & What's New For LatestRelease J17.0.1377

2016-01-27 Thread Mike B.

JAWS
list of 17 items
• The INSERT+X command, which temporarily toggles Smart Navigation, now uses
the default selection configured in the Startup Wizard. For instance, if the
default setting is Off, performing this command toggles between Controls and
Tables and Off. If the default setting is Controls, performing this command
toggles between Off and Controls.
• When typing in Contracted Braille using the keyboard on the Focus display,
resolved an issue where text was not being entered into edit fields if the
particular field was completely empty.
• When JAWS is configured to display text in Unified English Braille (UEB),
resolved an issue where the word "in" was being incorrectly contracted when
followed by a punctuation mark or preceded by a quotation mark.
• Resolved a customer reported issue with UEB translation where the "ever"
contraction was being used incorrectly in some instances.
• Resolved an issue where the dollar sign (dot 4 followed by dots 2-3-4) was
not being entered as expected when typing in Unified English Braille Grade
2.
Start
menu.
• Added links in the JAWS Help to the web page where users can download the
Freedom Scientific Developer Network (FSDN).
• A new option, Annotation Indication, has been added to the Reading Options
group in Quick Settings for all applications. It determines whether or not
JAWS detects annotations such as comments, footnotes, and endnotes in rich
text documents.
• Resolved an issue with the Technology News from CNet Research It lookup
source where results containing an apostrophe were not being displayed
correctly.
• If JAWS is configured to start automatically at the logon screen or after
you have logged into Windows, you can now press and hold both the ALT and
CTRL
keys as Windows boots to prevent JAWS from starting. This is useful if you
need to troubleshoot any startup related issues you may be experiencing.
• A new speech output type has been added which enables JAWS to
automatically announce toast notifications. These are notifications apps can
use to display
time-sensitive or personally relevant notifications regardless of whether
the user is in another app or on the Start screen, Lock screen, or Desktop.
For
example, a toast may be used to alert a user to an incoming VOIP call,
instant message, or text message. The new Toasts output type is selected for
all
verbosity levels and can be configured using the Configure Verbosity Levels
group in Settings Center.
• Resolved reported issues using JAWS with the Miranda NG instant messaging
client.
• Resolved a customer reported issue where pressing INSERT+PAGE UP in a
command prompt window was reading the next line instead of reading from the
cursor
to the end of the current line as expected.
• Addressed a reported issue with dialog boxes that are generated using JAWS
scripts not being spoken as expected.
• Worked with Pitney Bowes to resolve several reported issues that impacted
their company employees using JAWS.
list end

IBM Notes (formerly Lotus Notes)
list of 1 items
• Due to limitations with JAWS support for IBM Notes, Smart Navigation does
not work as well as it does in other applications that use the Virtual
Cursor.
At this time, we have disabled this feature in IBM Notes until we can get it
working properly.
list end

Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox
list of 9 items
• When navigating the contents of some edit fields, resolved an issue where
the last and first words of consecutive lines were being read as a single
word.
• Improvements continue to be made to JAWS performance with Google Docs and
Google Sheets. These include the paragraph navigation commands (CTRL+UP
ARROW
and CTRL+DOWN ARROW) as well as the commands for reading the current line
and current paragraph (INSERT+UP ARROW and INSERT+NUM PAD 5) now working as
expected,
the document content edit field now being properly recognized as a multiline
edit, and JAWS now speaking the correct label for the document content edit
field and no longer displaying it on every line in Braille.
• You can now use the JAWS cursor to navigate web page content in Firefox.
• Resolved an issue where spaces in the content o

I tried to download the update, it look like it could work, but they gave me an
error about the patch not downloading or something. Now my computer will talk,
however, it won't let me navigate to things. It just says the letters I'm
pressing that doesn't tell me anything. Any suggestions? Should I uninstall
jaws and reinstall 17? And not update?

Nope. With the pop-up blocker off, and with a blank page on IE, I hear
nothing when I press the Rumola favorite. Then when I press the Rumola
favorite again, it tells me that "Rumola light is already running on this
page", with an OK button.

I paid for a subscription, and as noted to this list, never received an
email confirmation with an account or password. Is Rumola light a non-paid
version?

What's going on?

Hi All,

If you have put the Rumola link into the Favorites Bar of IE, & you haven't
purchased any credits yet, when you press enter on the Rumola link on the
Favorites Bar you will get a message stating you don't have any credits & to
please buy some. Well, when you press the spacebar on the Okay button you
need to have the, Turn on Pop-up Blocker, option unchecked in the Privacy
tab of IE / Tools / Options or the Rumola webpage won't come up for you to
buy credits. It took me awhile to get this figured out, so I thought I
would share & save someone some aggravation!
Take care.

Just changing the subject line, since I forgot on the original message.

Before we get started with this discussion, anyone who wants to complain
because this service has a cost attached to it,
keep those comments off-list!
Complaining about how much things cost blind people has nothing to do with
the use of Jaws, and is certainly not constructive!
Now, on with the info as I have it:
>From what I understand, there is one called Rumola, and it is supposed to
work with IE , Firefox and Google.
You can find out more at:

http://skipinput.com/

I believe that there are extensions for Firefox and Chrome, but not for IE,
although
someone has discovered a way for it to work with IE.
It is a pay-for service,
50 credits = $0.99
150 credits = $1.95
Credits are valid for one year from time of purchase.

My experience with the website, and getting the service to work using Jaws
was a good one.

purchased any credits yet, when you press enter on the Rumola link on the
Favorites Bar you will get a message stating you don't have any credits & to
please buy some.

I believe that there are extensions for Firefox and Chrome, but not for IE,
although
someone has discovered a way for it to work with IE.
It is a pay-for service,
50 credits = $0.99
150 credits = $1.95
Credits are valid for one year from time of purchase.

My experience with the website, and getting the service to work using Jaws

Yes, indeed, Rumola works with IE as long as you save the bookmarklet
version in the favorites bar. And once you have created an account and
saved the bookmarklet version in the IE favorites bar, you can copy and
paste it into the Firefox bookmarks tool bar so that you can use the same
account to solve image captchas with either IE or Firefox. There is no need
to create an account using the Rumola add-on for Firefox unless you use
Firefox as your primary browser and are not interested in using it with IE.
I have already used Rumola with IE 11 to successfully solve a couple of
image captchas.

Nice try, Mike. I just tested your hypothesis. I added the bookmarklet
version of Rumola to my IE favorites bar (I already have an account, so I
renamed this version of Rumola so that it would not conflict with the one I
already have in the favorites bar), and when I hit space on the OKay
button, I got the page for purchasing credits, even though I have the box on
the Privacy tab for turning on the pop-up blocker checked. So checking or
unchecking this box may not make any difference.

Yo Kimsan,

Here are some notes I've saved that might help:

From: David Moore
Hi all.
I have been experimenting with Google Chrome Browser, and I have found that
it is very accessible and easy to use. More than that, I can open the same
web site in half the time as with IE or Firefox. It never crashes, and it is
more stable than any other browser. It is the best browser when it comes to
streaming videos and other media by far. The video never pauses for example.

In IE, the same video pauses a few times for a few seconds. Also, Google
Chrome is the easiest browser to use. Yes, I am not kidding. Simply press
enter on the browser, and the home page opens. I have mine set to Google of
course. Now, just press alt and the screen reader will say chrome button. If
you press down arrow, every setting and menu you will ever need is in that
one vertical column. The history, delete history, book marks, are all in
that one vertical menu just by pressing the alt key on the home page. All
navigation JAWS short cut keys work in Google Chrome. I have not found
anything yet that is not accessible. Also, every JAWS key command works in
Chrome just like in IE. You can just press alt + D for the address bar for
example. I will continue to play around with Google Chrome a little more,
and I will be ready to do an Audio tutorial for you guys. You will not
believe just how much better Google Chrome is over any other browser. You
will hear it with your own ears when I send you the tutorial probably by
Friday. I know some of you will use Chrome as your default browser. God
bless and have a great night. Talk to all of you soon.

From: David Moore
Hi all,
The fact that there is only one vertical menu is what I really like. On book
marks and other options, you have to press the right arrow just like it is a
sub menu to get access to your book marks, for example. Also, you do not
have to sign on the settings page. There is no important reason why you have
to. You can still change the settings and do what you want to do without
ever signing in. Take care and have a great one.

From: Tim Ford
Hi Gerald,
In Chrome, use the alt key to bring up the menus, cursor down to "bookmarks"
and press enter. Arrow down and one of the items is "bookmarks from IE".
If you do not find those bookmarks, repeat the steps above, and press enter
on the import bookmarks line, then after that finishes, you should then see
the bookmarks from IE in its own list.
By the way, the Chrome menus allow first letter navigation, so after first
hitting the alt key, pressing b pops you right to the bookmarks line.

Tim Ford

From: Tim Ford
Here is the download page. The web page will automatically detect your
operating system and give you the correct version to install.
https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/

I cannot remember how to turn that into a link, so you will need to manually
copy the above string into an "open web page" box.
Tim

From: Gerald Levy
But what about that nasty Google Tool Bar? Doesn't that also install along
with Google Chrome? Is there any way to prevent this tool bar from
installing along with Chrome?
Gerald

From: David Moore
Hi there,
Yes there is. You do not need the Google tool bar at all and it is easy to
use and all key commands work with it. Take care.
David

From: Adrian Spratt via Jfw
I'm using the same version. When Chrome and JAWS work together, moving from
page to page is much, much faster than with either IE or FF, but I keep
encountering websites where data can't be entered. The latest is Yahoo
Finance, where stock symbols can't be entered.

Two tips:

I kept getting a warning about Chrome not being the default. I finally heard
that JAWS was telling me to press alt-shift-a. When I did so, I tabbed
through to "Don't ask again" and checked it.

Control-d works to create a favorite, but initially I couldn't edit the name
that popped up. However, you can tab to an edit field and create your own
name.
Adrian

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] chrome

2016-01-27 Thread Gerald Levy

Yes, indeed, Rumola works with IE as long as you save the bookmarklet
version in the favorites bar. And once you have created an account and
saved the bookmarklet version in the IE favorites bar, you can copy and
paste it into the Firefox bookmarks tool bar so that you can use the same
account to solve image captchas with either IE or Firefox. There is no need
to create an account using the Rumola add-on for Firefox unless you use
Firefox as your primary browser and are not interested in using it with IE.
I have already used Rumola with IE 11 to successfully solve a couple of
image captchas.

Still have no idea why FS hasn't developed some feature in JAWS to do
this. Guess it's much more difficult then I thought.

wise) so I can have a way of dealing with those capture images. Do you
know of an app or something for Google Chrome that tackles this issue?

Still have no idea why FS hasn't developed some feature in JAWS to do
this. Guess it's much more difficult then I thought.

Yo Kimsan,

Here are some notes I've saved that might help:

Hi all.
I have been experimenting with Google Chrome Browser, and I have
found that
it is very accessible and easy to use. More than that, I can open the
same
web site in half the time as with IE or Firefox. It never crashes,
and it is
more stable than any other browser. It is the best browser when it
comes to
streaming videos and other media by far. The video never pauses for
example.

In IE, the same video pauses a few times for a few seconds. Also, Google
Chrome is the easiest browser to use. Yes, I am not kidding. Simply
press
enter on the browser, and the home page opens. I have mine set to
Google of
course. Now, just press alt and the screen reader will say chrome
button. If
you press down arrow, every setting and menu you will ever need is in
that

one vertical column. The history, delete history, book marks, are all in
that one vertical menu just by pressing the alt key on the home page.
All

navigation JAWS short cut keys work in Google Chrome. I have not found
anything yet that is not accessible. Also, every JAWS key command
works in
Chrome just like in IE. You can just press alt + D for the address
bar for
example. I will continue to play around with Google Chrome a little
more,

and I will be ready to do an Audio tutorial for you guys. You will not
believe just how much better Google Chrome is over any other browser.
You

will hear it with your own ears when I send you the tutorial probably by
Friday. I know some of you will use Chrome as your default browser. God
bless and have a great night. Talk to all of you soon.

Hi all,
The fact that there is only one vertical menu is what I really like.
On book
marks and other options, you have to press the right arrow just like
it is a

sub menu to get access to your book marks, for example. Also, you do not
have to sign on the settings page. There is no important reason why
you have

to. You can still change the settings and do what you want to do without
ever signing in. Take care and have a great one.

Hi Gerald,
In Chrome, use the alt key to bring up the menus, cursor down to
"bookmarks"
and press enter. Arrow down and one of the items is "bookmarks from
IE".
If you do not find those bookmarks, repeat the steps above, and press
enter
on the import bookmarks line, then after that finishes, you should
then see

the bookmarks from IE in its own list.
By the way, the Chrome menus allow first letter navigation, so after
first

hitting the alt key, pressing b pops you right to the bookmarks line.

Here is the download page. The web page will automatically detect your
operating system and give you the correct version to install.
https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/

I cannot remember how to turn that into a link, so you will need to
manually

copy the above string into an "open web page" box.

But what about that nasty Google Tool Bar? Doesn't that also install
along

with Google Chrome? Is there any way to prevent this tool bar from
installing along with Chrome?

Hi there,
Yes there is. You do not need the Google tool bar at all and it is
easy to

use and all key commands work with it. Take care.

I'm using the same version. When Chrome and JAWS work together,
moving from

page to page is much, much faster than with either IE or FF, but I keep
encountering websites where data can't be entered. The latest is Yahoo
Finance, where stock symbols can't be entered.

Two tips:

I kept getting a warning about Chrome not being the default. I
finally heard

Hi,
Chrome is great when you get used to it.

I just installed chrome version 48. I felt pressured to do so as everyone
has it lol. How do I set my homepage for chrome. So far I hate chrome but I
have only had it for less than half hour now.
