Lenny, this sounds like a mouseover verbalization. Maybe try control-JAWS
key-enter to invoke the mouseover command.

I just noticed that our local news paper has some adds from local

activate it or am I having the same problem trying to open some links.

As noted in my most recent post, the problem apparently is not new in Jaws
17, since I find it in Jaws 16 as well.

Once again, I'm using Word 2016 and Outlook 2016 in Office 365 here.

Most of the time we complain about JAWS not speaking enough. This may be a
case of JAWS seeing and talking too much, new in 17.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How To Stop Jaws From Saying Vertical Tab

2016-06-01 Thread Adrian Spratt
Tom,

I'm afraid I was rushing when I posted earlier.

Now that I've figured out how to create a vertical tab and tried to copy it
into the JAWS dictionary, I believe the method Vickie set forth doesn't work.
The dictionary doesn't seem to recognize the vertical tab character with this
method. At least, I can't get it to.

Fortunately, Brian has explained another method that looks as though it works.
How he got there is beyond me!

For the record, to create the ASCII symbol vertical tab, press num lock to
"on." then press and hold the alt key while quickly pressing 011 on the numpad.
Release the alt key and press the numpad key to "off" in order to restore full
JAWS functioning.

However, when I pressed alt 11, I got the so-called male symbol.

I think Vickie has the right answer for suppressing the verbalization. Copy
the symbol from the document, then paste it into the first field of the JAWS

The vertical tab is not punctuation. It is more like a formatting notation.
I'm yet to figure out the difference between a vertical tab and a hard
return, and why is the vertical tab sometimes announced by JAWS17 and other
times it is not. I cannot confirm if this is a feature of JAWS17, or some
change in Microsoft.

The only place where the announcement of the vertical tab behavior has been
consistent has been in PowerPoint 2010. When tabbing from object to object
on a slide in design mode, if there is a hard return at the end of text,
JAWS will only announce the vertical tab when you first tab to that object.
Once you press Enter to edit the contents of that object, the vertical tab
is no longer announced.

2016-06-01 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Tom,

The following steps should work:

1. Press JAWS key with D to bring up the dictionary manager.

2. Use CTRL with Shift and D to load the default dictionary manager.

3. Tab to the tree view and press E for English.

4. Expand the English option by using right arrow key.

5. Use down arrow key and find the appropriate synthesizer. You can
also press E for Eloquence, V for ?Vocalizer, V until you find Vocalizer
Expressive, etc.

6. Use right arrow to open the appropriate synthesizer item.

7. Press a backslash key until you find a backslash followed by 011.
JAWS should tell you that this equals Vertical Tab.

8. Tab to the Change button and press spacebar.

9. In the Actual Word field should be the \011. Tab to the
Replacement Word field and press spacebar one time.

10. Tab to OK and use spacebar.

11. Use CTRL with S to save changes.

12. Close the window using Alt with F4.

13. You might or might not need to restart JAWS.

The above worked for me using a Vocalizer Expressive profile.

Take care.

Interesting, Jim.

I am using Windows 7 with Jaws 17 here.

I have noticed that the vertical tabs do not seem to be announced in older
Word files that have been prepared in Word 2003, 2007, or 2010. Same goes

Hi, I think if you find one of these Vertical Tabs, Copy it to Clip Board,
Go to the Jaws window, Go under Utilities and then under dictionaries and
press the space bar on Add and then paste it in with Control V, then press
Tab, to the Replace With, and just either leave it empty or press the space
bar there.
Don't forget to save this addition with Control S.

The vertical tab creates a new line without creating a new paragraph. According
to something I found via google, it is ASCII character alt 11. However, when I
pressed alt 11, I got the so-called male symbol.

I think Vickie has the right answer for suppressing the verbalization. Copy the
symbol from the document, then paste it into the first field of the JAWS
dictionary, etc.

Yes Tom, my Jaws is set to read some, punctuation as well. I am not sure why
you are hearing the vertical tab from Jaws while in outlook or word 2016, I
am not hearing that from Jaws 17.

Hi Tom, using office 365 with Jaws 17 on a W-10 computer, I am not hearing
the vertical tabs with jaws.

As noted in my most recent post, the problem apparently is not new in Jaws
17, since I find it in Jaws 16 as well.

Once again, I'm using Word 2016 and Outlook 2016 in Office 365 here.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How To Stop Jaws From Saying Vertical Tab

2016-06-01 Thread Vicky Vaughan

Hi, I think if you find one of these Vertical Tabs,
Copy it to Clip Board,
Go to the Jaws window,
Go under Utilities and then under dictionaries
and press the space bar on Add and then paste it in with Control V,
then press Tab, to the Replace With, and just either leave it empty or press
the space bar there.

Don't forget to save this addition with Control S.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How To Stop Jaws From Saying Vertical Tab

2016-06-01 Thread Annette Carr

As an additional note, I tried Jaws 16, and still got the repeated vertical

Re: [JAWS-Users] A navigation question

2016-06-01 Thread David Moore

Hi Andy,
Your question is a good one and one that is hard to answer. First of all,
The JAWS cursor over the years has not let me interact much with the tool
bar buttons below the menu bar. I think this is what you are talking about.
For example, In most programs, you have buttons at the top of the screen for
Settings, Zoom in and out, Print, and so on. The JAWS cursor does not access
these buttons very well in most programs. Here is the answer that would work
for you great! If you download a free copy of NVDA screen reader, you can
use that screen reader to access all that is on the screen very easily. You
can use what is called object navigation, which allows you to navigate
everywhere on the screen where the PC cursor cannot go. Then, there is a
command to route the mouse to the button or where ever you want to click on.
Then, you can use the left mouse click to interact with that button. This is
why I am telling everyone lately, to have a copy of NVDA on their computer,
because it can access things on the screen that JAWS just will not. JAWS is
much better for most things, but NVDA is great for exactly what you are
talking about. You can download NVDA at:

www.nvaccess.org
It is totally free and open source and the community keeps it going. Take
care.

Hello,

I'm sure there's a basic command for this, but I can't seem to find it. How
do I get to the series of headings at the top of many windows, apparently
running from left to right just below the title bar? There are actions I
need to perform on areas below these headings, but neither cursor (or a
combination of them) will display them. (This is actually an ongoing issue
for me, in which the JAWS cursor frequently doesn't access, or display, not
sure which, much of what I think it should, for areas of the window or
screen that the PC cursor won't show.) So maybe the question is more
general: how do I use some combination of cursors and routing to read and
act upon these other areas of the screen or window? I'm supposed to know
this stuff as part of my job, and I know it's not this hard.

Re: [JAWS-Users] OOTunes contact page

2016-06-01 Thread John Fitzgerald
I was able to fill out all of the form, except user name because I don't
have one. Wwhen I pressed the submit button the screen would change, but
the form was still there, which leads me to believe that it was never
submitted. I did manage to search the page using magic, and found a line
that was not spoken "please fill in the boxes marked in red" so I tabbed
through all of the form to double check. All boxes were filled except user
name, so I resubmitted. Again the screen changed but ledt me on the forms
page. So I tried putting none in the user name box, and resubmitted, again
the screen changed, but left me on the forms page. At this point I decided
to see if some one had a direct email address that they were willing to
share.

Hello John,
I just tried the Ootunes page that was linked in your email using
JAWS17 and Windows10 using Internet Explorer 11. I was able to navigate this
page and the form fields on it without any issue. I would imagine that it
would work fine also with JAWS16. What difficulty are you experiencing?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows list

2016-06-01 Thread Jim Flusche
Yes, you need to turn off the store live tile app. Press the windows key,
down arrow to your account, right arrow to the live tile region, use your up
and down arrows and highlight the store tile. Press the application key, go
down to, More sub menu, right arrow one time. Down arrow to turn off live
tile and press enter. If you wish to remove it from the start area all
together, after turning it off. Just highlight it again, press the
application key, go to remove from start, press enter. Also, under the
background apps in the settings area, make sure the store app is turned off.

Does anyone know why the store app is always showing on my Windows list of
running apps invoked with the insert f10 key? Does anyone know how I can
stop this?

I even had Candy Crush showing as an app today. This is most annoying.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Some questions and concerns about updating to Windows 10.

2016-06-01 Thread Jim Flusche
Hi LeDon, Windows 10 works great with Jaws 17. You can make it look like W-7,
you still have the convenience of the start button, very easy to learn what the
All Apps region looks like. The live tile region is easy to learn and to
customize to your personal preferences. The settings area is strait forward and
easy to learn. You can upgrade to the latest windows operating system for free.
The system works and preforms much faster than W-7. This is the operating
system of the present and of the future.

ten when I know how to get around in windows seven quite well. I don’t know
what to tell him about why I should update. Can someone tell me why, a totally

updating do I have to delete jaws from my computer and reinstall my Jaws
seventeen to the computer? Thank you for your thoughts.

2016-06-01 Thread Adrian Spratt
Andy,

Could you explain if these Windows are displaying webpages, word processor
pages (in which case, which one?), screens for a specific application, or what?

Even then, I'm not quite sure what you're experiencing and what you're trying
to accomplish. In case it helps, you can force the PC cursor to the JAWS cursor
by pressing the JAWS key with the PC/+ sign on the numpad. Also, while in the
JAWS cursor, you can expand or reduce its range by pressing the JAWS key+r
repeatedly through a cycle of options. But I suspect you need something else.

Hello,

I'm sure there's a basic command for this, but I can't seem to find it. How do
I get to the series of headings at the top of many windows, apparently running
from left to right just below the title bar? There are actions I need to
perform on areas below these headings, but neither cursor (or a combination of
them) will display them. (This is actually an ongoing issue for me, in which
the JAWS cursor frequently doesn't access, or display, not sure which, much of
what I think it should, for areas of the window or screen that the PC cursor
won't show.) So maybe the question is more general: how do I use some
combination of cursors and routing to read and act upon these other areas of
the screen or window? I'm supposed to know this stuff as part of my job, and I
know it's not this hard.

I just reviewed the documentation for installing them and it occurs to
me that since they are so old some additions might need to be added. For
example they were written for 4.51 and I doubt anybody on here today is
still using that version they would need to be compiled for a more
recent offering of JAWS, 15 at least if not 17.

I could do an audio recording of me installing them for myself if there
is any interest out there in listening.

I mention updating them since version 13 we have had the my extensions
feature which personally works for me very well. There will still be a
need to modify the default key map file, but since it is only a text
file with a JKM extension notepad handles that job quite simply.

Feedback would be appreciated including thoughts on a demo good or bad.

Well, I have to admit that I am stumped. When I go to the Adjust Voice
settings and tab to Voice adjust all contacts, the next tab takes me to
Voice person. I do use the computer with an Administrator account.
Perhaps, if you use the computer with a user account, that option does not
appear. You could call FS support.

Michael, as you directed, when I focus on the vocalize expressive profile,

Voice Adjust: Combo box, All Contexts, 1 of 5

Hi

In order to use a different JAWS voice, you must switch to it. Press
JAWSkey+control+s to open the Select a Voice Profile dialog. Then arrow
down to Vocalizer Expressive and press enter. There used to be an option to
have a SayAll use a different voice than the default voice. But that option
has disappeared somewhere in the last few releases of JAWS. To switch
between the different Vocalizer Expressive voices, you need to open the JAWS
Options menu and then choose Voices and then choose Voice adjustment. Make
sure you're on the Vocalizer Expressive profile. Then tab to Voice Person
and select the voice you want.

[JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder

2016-06-01 Thread Moderator
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The
purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader
Program.

So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better
with scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be
requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we
all know works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain
task or want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently.

Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal
place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no
matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the
confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the
list will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that
help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last
than first. So try it yourself first whatever it is. If you get stuck then
let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma.
Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if
there is a software package that does a specific task and works well with
JAWS is perfectly fine.

The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of
Freedom Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then take
it up with Freedom Scientific directly.

Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible.

Signatures and tag lines should not be more than a couple of sentences,
three or four at the most. If you wish to include a tag line, don't make
another message of it. Placing anything else in there simply increases the
bandwidth required to handle the posted message and make it more work for a
person who wishes to follow the given thread back to review previous
messages, as they have to plow down past an overly long signature. Also
please place your message above your signature line so as not to force
people to read it before they get to your message.

Also any newsletters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not
be posted to the list prior to receiving moderator approval.

Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done
for your protection. The message list might state that there is an
attachment but in fact Mailman does remove them.

When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive
in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply
delete messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are
over 650 subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on
here.

Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines,
then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions
that are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not
receive an answer for a number of reasons.

Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list.

Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you
may receive an email from the server asking you to reactivate your account.
Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the
directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a
number of such messages then the server will remove your email address
automatically.

The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. This is not a high tech
swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or
services will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given
subject is off topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the
subject line does not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and
members should only post in the following manner:

Using the TO: field with only one list address. The reason for this is that
in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the to: field often
times such rules get fouled up and in effect do not work properly. Also
cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the
fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This
practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with
unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators.

The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any
member names.

Please do not reply to a posted question simply to say you don't know
