Mike posted a useful list of his pinned apps, and except for JAWS, mine is similar, if in a different order. Here's an example of how useful pinned applications can be. Suppose I start the day by opening my email. In my case, I press Windows key+4. Then I want to copy the text of a long, complex email into a Word document. However, I find that first copying complex texts into Notepad clears up a lot of mess. So I press windows key+3 to bring up Notepad, copy the text, then copy the result, close Notepad with alt-F4, then open Word with windows key+2. I paste the text into a document. Then suppose I'm ready to return to my email. All I need do is press windows key+4, and my focus is immediately back there. No need to rotate around with alt-tab, etc. Then something in an email makes me want to find out more online, so now I press Windows key+1 to bring up IE. There, I find information that I want to add to a document I've been working on. So I press windows-key+2 to return to word. That done, I'm ready to resume email, so I press windows key-4 and I'm back where I started. I hope this message is more useful than just convoluted. When I first started using windows 7, I was following directions from a textbook and tried this pinning method as an exercise. But once I worked with it, I realized just how easy it made moving from application to application. The numbers you assign to your applications soon become second-nature. In my case, I pretty much set them up as they occurred to me. There's no logical sequence. For the record, I don't pin JAWS to the taskbar. I rarely move from version to version. I have JAWS 18 on all the time, unless I mute it, and in that case, pinning can't help. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Kimsan Sent: Friday, December 16, 2016 3:18 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Starting Jaws and switching Jaws versions onyour W-10computer If jaws is on the taskbar for me to launch and I forgot which number it was on that does me no good. Re: [JAWS-Users] Another Excel question
Hi Adam, You can copy the formula and paste it in as many of the cells in that column. As long as the relationship between the cell with the formula and the cells the formula is using to perform the calculation stay the same you will be fine. So if you have a formula in f2 that adds the values of cells a2, b2, c2, d2 and e2, no matter where you move the cell with the formula, it will always add up the values from the 5 cells to the left of it. If you use the $ sign before any column or row reference in your formula, then they will not change when you paste the formula into another cell. Re: [JAWS-Users] Starting Jaws and switching Jaws versions on your W-10computer
Hi Reed, for example after shutting down say Jaws 17. Some times I would have to press the Jaws short cut keystroke control+ALT+j a few times to get Jaws 18 to come on. But when I do windows key +2, jaws 18 comes right on. I also pin all my most used program icons to the taskbar as well. I also make many short cuts on my desktop to many programs and internet short cuts and so on. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Reed Sent: Friday, December 16, 2016 2:34 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Starting Jaws and switching Jaws versions on your W-10computer Hey Jim, Why does your method work more consistently? Re: [JAWS-Users] Starting Jaws and switching Jaws versions on your W-10computer
I completely understand how useful the taskbar and pinning items are. I've been pinning and removing items from there since its birth. I have 10 items on my taskbar which I do not remember all the items, except for the internet and my email program which are windows 1 and 0 for ie and outlook respectively.. I only have one jaws version loaded as well. I have 18 but didn't find it well worth installing, so I just run with 17. For now, I still use the windows key r jaws then version number and press enter to launch jaws when necessary. I'm going to go eat my left over spaghetti now. Mommas hungry. Hi Jyandt, I'm not sure of what you're asking. Do you want to remove File Manager? Or, if you right arrow after pressing, Windows key + T, do you have other items pinned to the Taskbar to the right of File Manager? If you want to remove File Manager from the taskbar, with File Manager highlighted, press your applications key or shift + F10 to open the context menu, arrow down to, unpin this program from Taskbar, & press enter. Press escape to get off the Taskbar, & the next time you go to the Taskbar File Manager will be gone. If you had anything else pinned to the right of File Manager they will move to the left 1 spot. Let's say that you have File Manager pinned to the 1st spot, Notepad pinned to the 2nd spot, Word pinned to the 3rd spot, & Firefox pinned to the 4th spot, after unpinning File Manager the other programs will all move to the left 1 spot. So, after unpinning File Manager you would have Notepad at #1, Word at #2, & Firefox at #3. I hope I haven't confused you as much as I did myself trying to explain that! LOL Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Starting Jaws and switching Jawsversions onyour W-10computer
Yes it does if you press the Windows key + T to put you on the taskbar. you will be on the 1st item. Right arrow & count. You start on, 1, so right arrow , that'll be 2, right arrow that'll be 3Once when you get to Jaws, & let's number 5, press escape to get off the taskbar, now if you invoke, Windows key + 5, that will load whatever version of Jaws Windows key + 5, is assigned to. Example: My taskbar is layed out this way, 1. IE11. 2. Notepad. 3. Email Client. 4. Word. 5. J15. 6. J16. 7. J17. 8. Firefox. 9. Openbook 9. So pressing the Windows key + a number from above will open the program assigned to the number. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Starting Jaws and switching Jaws versions onyour W-10computer
Hi Reed, I'm not jim, but I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. With all the keystroke combinations that are available with JAWS & various programs like Word, Excel, Outlook, & whatever other programs assigning shortcut keystrokes can run into problems wile using other programs. For instance, I usually run at least 3 different versions of JAWS, so if using up other keystrokes like, Control, Alt, + J, for 1 version Control, Alt + other letters or numbers for the other versions of JAWS, these other keystrokes might be used in other programs, so let's say I wanted to unload J17, & load J16 with the keystroke, control, alt, + 6, while in Word, & this is also a shortcut keystroke in Word, well I'm losing the function of that keystroke for either Word or J16 while in that program. Also, I just find using the taskbar keystrokes more consistent & reliable. Take care. Press the applications key, go down to, more submenu, right arrow one time, press enter on pin to taskbar. You are now done. Now press windows key+m, go to desktop. Tab twice to the taskbar, or just press windows key+t, this lands you on the first item pinned to the taskbar. Press the right arrow key, and count the number of icons on your taskbar, until you come to Jaws 18. Again, Jaws 18 is the second item on my taskbar, to start Jaws 18 on my computer, just press windows key+2. This is a much smoother way, of starting Jaws on your W-10 computer. Now Jaws 16 is the eighth item on my taskbar, so I press windows key+8, to start Jaws 16. So this is a great and easy way of switching from one version of Jaws to another. I hope you all of enjoyed this tip about starting Jaws on your W-10 computer. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a happy new Year! P.S. My three month cancer check-up was free of any new bladder tumors. Praise the LORD! Thanks for praying! Time for more coffee! Smiles. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop
Louise, first decide whether you want to keep both versions of JAWS. If you do, and if you decide to use the control-alt-j shortcut for 18, you will first need to remove it from 17. Or else keep the j shortcut with 17 and create a new one for 18. To remove a shortcut, follow the same steps, except when you get to "j," just press the delete key. Escape to get out of the dialog and you should be fine. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Louise Johnson Sent: Friday, December 16, 2016 1:29 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop Hi thanks for the good information how to make the short cut key. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop
You might have to first go into the properties of the JAWS 117 icon and delete the existing shortcut key there, then add the shortcut key to the JAWS 18 icon. I don't know if Windows is smart enough to remove it for you when you add it to the JAWS 18 icon. Cheers! Alt-delete will give you the position in terms of inches. JAWS key+3 on the numpad will give you the position number in relation to the margin. Another way is to press the key combo control-e. This is the toggle for centering and un-centering text. Press Listen to what JAWS reports. If the first press of this combo has JAWS verbalize "align left," you'll know the text wasn't left-aligned. You'll simultaneously fix the problem. Adrian, thanks to you guys for the help and I will look into this again this afternoon. Over the years I have set up the control, Alt plus "j" keystroke many times and I have run into this problem before and lived without it but it is nice to have it when using narrator. I am just starting to look at narrator a little now. Right now when I unload jaws 18 and want to reload jaws I use the run dialogue. Thanks again to all of you guys. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Friday, December 16, 2016 7:21 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop Fred, This JAWS shortcut is notoriously fickle. Try this, which works on my system. Follow Ed's steps exactly up to and including where you confirm that your choice of shortcut has been accepted. Then, instead of going to the okay button and pressing enter, press escape to get out of the dialog. Ed is correct, but I've found that taking that extra step to the Okay button often undoes the shortcut. I have no idea why this is, but I recall others reporting a similar experience. A couple of points just to be sure. Note that Ed said just to type "j." Control and alt are assumed unless you type some other key. So adding the control and alt keys would risk sending the shortcut dialog into a tantrum. Also, Ed suggested using insert-tab to confirm the shortcut has been entered. I'm sure he's right, but that isn't the key combination I use. In my case, it's JAWS key+8 on the numpad. I automatically reboot after pressing escape. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Fred Adams Sent: Friday, December 16, 2016 6:08 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop Mr Ed, I have done all that you mentioned several times but to no avail. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop
Escape doesn't function as cancel, not in this case. If it did, this method wouldn't work for me. It simply takes you out of the dialog. Mike's direction get to the same place in a different way, except for adding the "apply" button. Usually, with other dialogs, I press spacebar on the apply button, but experience on two systems with this particular dialog has made it unnecessary. In fact, the fewer tabs and other keystrokes, the more likely I find the shortcut will stick. Still, if "apply" works, great. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Gene Warner Sent: Friday, December 16, 2016 8:37 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop Hi Fred! Re: [JAWS-Users] Another Excel question
Hi Adam! How exactly are you copying the cell with the formula? If you put your cursor on C1, then press control + C to copy it, then move your cursor to C2, then press control + V to paste it, when you look at the formula, you'll see that the cell references have been changed to A2 and B2. If you want to copy the cell to a range of contiguous cells, you can highlight all the cells you want to duplicate the formula into, then press control +V, the cell you copied will be replicated into all the highlighted cells with appropriate cell reference changes. If you are creating a table where each line or column has the same formulas with appropriate cell reference adjustments you can skip copying and pasting with this alternate method. Put your cursor on the cell you want to duplicate, then while holding down the shift key, select all the cells down or to the right that you want the formula copied to, then press control +D to copy down, or control + R to copy to the right. Using your example: put your cursor on C1, hold down the shift and arrow down to C10 or C20, then press control + D. You'll now find that cells C1 to C10 or C20 all have your formula in it with cell references adjusted. hth Cheers! On 12/16/2016 8:41 AM, Adam Ferguson wrote: thanks for your reply George. If you only want to copy the data in column B, you could select B2:b99. You could then copy to the clipboard and paste into your second spreadsheet. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop
I just tried it. I het alt enter, then alt k for shortcut. I hit the letter j, then alt a for apply. Here is what I got. Access denied. I have to provide administrative access before I can do that. I hit the continue button and this is what I got. "C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\16.0\jfw.exe" So, how do I get past administrative access; as far as I know, I'm the administrator. Re: [JAWS-Users] Another Excel question
Hi Adam! By default, Excel treats all cell references as relative, automatically adjusting them as you copy and paste cells with formulas in them. No need to do anything special at all. just copy the cell with the formula, then paste it where ever you want it. hth Cheers! On 12/16/2016 8:27 AM, Adam Ferguson wrote: Hello. Hi Adam, If I understand what you are saying, what you want to do is use Absolute references in your formula. For instance c1 * G10 will become c1 * $g$1. This means that it will always use g1 no matter where you copy the formula. You can use the $ for only the row or only the column or both. Hi Fred, Here's another approach. 1. Go to the Desktop with, Windows key + M. 2. Highlight the JAWS icon. 3. Press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS Properties. 4. Tab to the Shortcut key field, and type in the shortcut key combination of your choice, like Alt-Control-J or whatever other combination you prefer. 5. Tab to Apply button, hit Space, then tab around again to the Okay button and press Enter. I have always had the best luck by 1st, Applying then Okaying in making shortcut keys stick. Take care. I have to chime in on this. Sadly, the newest version of Moviemaker lacks the Video Capture feature, which allows one to use one's webcam etc. to capture video, and also to capture streaming video from other sources. No more. Re: [JAWS-Users] Navigating a created Invoice in Excel
Dale: Thanks. If I am correct, there should be some keyboard commands for Excel using the JAWS key and the F1 key combination, correct? -Original Message- From: Dale Alton Sent: Thursday, December 15, 2016 6:15 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Navigating a created Invoice in Excel Hi Jerry, I would say the best way to learn the invoice is to sit down with your wife and have her explain it to you. You are able to get from cell to cell by arrowing and groups of cells by adding a control to the arrow. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop
Fred, This JAWS shortcut is notoriously fickle. Then you tab to short cut and press the letter J. Then do the insert + tab key to hear that the shortcut key is ctrl + alt+ J. Then tab to ok. Then I am not sure on this but you might have to reboot your pc for this change to take place. I guess you can try it first then if it does not work reboot your pc.
