[JAWS-Users] a walk through in downloading and installing jaws scripts

2017-07-29 Thread Sue J. Ward
Hello. I did take notice on the jaws-users you have some demos in
installing jaws scripts and am a new jaws user would like to see a
tutorial in finding a jaws script online, then installing the jaws
scripts. I am using jaws 18 and an updated tutorial would be nice to
listen to since would like to make thunderbird work better with jaws. I
forget where I saw the thunderbird script, a walk through would be nice.
I would like to hear the demo of finding the thunderbird script along
with where to installing it and making it work with the current version
of jaws. I did see some stuff about scripts, but a lot of the stuff I
saw they want money, would love to get the training course from
hartgen.org but I have no idea where to start plus don't have the money
as of right now am still getting used to jaws since am coming from
Window Eyes and still using it so please if some one could post
something on the website think that would help us out in the long run.

2017-07-29 Thread Rick Ely
First, thanks to all of you who responded with ideas. Nearly there, as I
have my quick Nav keys back. I want to do a post about how they were stolen,
but I need help.

After six hours of reading manuals and poking about, I was once again in
some menu but which? That is the help I need. An option in Say All was set
to use Nav Keys for Say All only. Space bar brought up options that let me
choose Quick Nav everywhere not just for Say All. That was the fix. Well,
thinks me, I know where that must have been. It is in the Utilities menu,
Settings center in Say All. Nope, settings there are for items like speak
capitals or blank line, but not for Quick Nav. Anyone know where that other
Say All option might be? It is not good enough to solve the problem for me
alone. Someone else is going to experience the same challenge. For that
matter, it could be me!

Hi Again Rick,

Another thought is that Navigation Quick Keys is turned off in Jaws Quick
Settings. While in your browser of choice press, Insert / Jaws Key + V, to
open it, & arrow down through your options. Under the, General Options,
you'll find Navigation Quick Keys, press the spacebar to toggle this until
Jaws reports, On, tab to, Okay, press enter to save & close your change.

Hi Rick,
If you press the, Alt key, do you get the menues? If not, 1 thing you can
try is turning off Full Screen mode, if you might have turned it on by
accident. F11, is a toggle. that turns Full Screen on / off. I know the,
F11 key, will turn the menues on & off, but I don't know if it will keep the
quick keys from working.

Afternoon,
I am using Windows 10 all updates, JAWS 18 all updates and the most recent
Firefox. Something I did made all of the quick navigation keys vanish. I
have looked all through the JAWS options thinking that somewhere along the
way I must have turned them off.

I am a relatively new user having switched from WindowEyes, so I went to the
article on browsing for folks moving to JAWS from WE. So much is similar
between the two that switching was easy. Any ideas of how I went down this
path and how to find my way again would be appreciated.
Thank ahead,

Mike, Thanks! Not sure I need to post the whole process as most of it is
already in the thread. Hope that others read your post here as it was
ultimately the solution. No idea how it got switched to that setting. I was
a WE user and knew that JAWS had the same Quick Navigation options and most
were the same as in WE. That is why it drove me so crazy.

An old film professor reminded students that once you lose your Zen with a
device, walk away and stay away for a good while. Great advice and no idea
why I fail to follow it so often.

I had done that but I did not think of using the spacebar on the option. WE
did not make as frequent use of the spacebar for options as does JAWS. I
know I pressed Enter on the option, but of course, nothing happened. Glad
you pointed that out for browser use. It feels as though I have learned a
lot of the differences between We and JAWS in a short time. This has been
the only one that was a major stumper.

The list is great as it has so many longtime Jaws users who are experienced
and willing to share knowledge.

aware that one could turn them on and off. Since writing, I have turned them
on with no result other than JAWS says "on" and "off." . Unloaded and loaded
JAWS, no change. Shut down and restarted multiple times and still no luck.
Are there other configuration elements that I might have messed up while
learning about JAWS under the hood?
Thanks muchly
Rick

Rick,

Sorry to start with what may seem the obvious, but just in case:

You're aware, right, that JAWS key+z is the toggle for quick navigation
keys?

Have you unloaded and reloaded JAWS?

Have you rebooted?

Re: [JAWS-Users] To much info being read on web pages and email

2017-07-29 Thread David Crowell
Hi Fernando,

The biggest problem is on the web when I open a page it tells me how many
regions, how many columns, how many tables, headers and links.

Then when arrowing down through the page and I stop Jaws tells me the row,
column and page number.

When I find the link I want jaws is saying graphic rimage link and the nake of
the link. All I want said is link and the name of the link.

I don't know if that helps any but would appreciate any help.

Hi David,
I understand the headaches of switching to a new screen reader. I had to change
from Talks to Mobile Speak for Symbian in the past, and now I'll need to switch
to a touch screen device. Situation in Windows is similar, not only because
different keystrokes for special features you were used to, but for different
approaches for interacting with non-focusable objects, that is, those which
cannot be reached with Windows standard keyboard commands.

Regarding your specific questions, within Outlook you can press INSERT+V to
open Quick Settings. Tab to the tree view and you'll find options to specify
wetter to automatically read number of links, message headers (From, Subject
and others) and message itself. I recommend you to leave the virtual cursor in
messages option turned on, to have JAWS to present HTML e-mail messages in a
way similar to web pages.
Regarding graphics and other info on web page, I'd be useful to know
specifically what you would like to stop from reading and how do you want to be
read. This is because JAWS options are mixed in many different locations,
including the somewhat advanced Speech and Sounds Manager dialog.

Feel free to ask!

Hi Mike,
I know you are not trying to give me a hard time. I just usedWindow Eyes for
over 20 years and so I just didn't think of that information.

I am using windows 10 on a 64 byte all in one computer. I am using the most
current version of Office 365 I use Outlook email and both internet explorer
and mozilla firefox as browsers.
Hope that information is helpful. Thank you

Hi Dave,

Before the list can help you we need to know a few things. Whenever you post
always include what operating system, what browser or browsers, what email
client, , & what version or versionns of Jaws you're running. Also state the
program & version, i.e, Office 2010...

I'm not trying to give you a bad time, but trying to give you tips on how to
get the best answers to your questions.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi,
I just began using Jaws when I migrated from Window Eyes. I have figured how
to set most things up but could use a little help with an issue I can't figure
out how to correct.

When I open a webpage and move around the links I hear the word graphic before
the link or Jaws tells me column, row headers and all that stuff. In email
when the message opens it announces how many links, tables or headers are in
the message and then announces tables and headers as I read the message. This
is driving me crazy.

I hope someone can tell me how to go about so all the stuff mentioned above is
not spoken

Thank you,

Dave Crowell

To stop JAWS from reading graphics, go to the JAWS setting center with JAWS
key+6 (on the number row above the letters). Be sure to do so while in the
application where you want graphics turned off. Type the word graphics into the
edit box. Arrow down through the options. Tab once anytime you want an
explanation.
